I've always been a "gun guy." The other week, I decided I'd also become at least sort of a "knife guy." Well, guess what I learned after my sharpies came in the mail (SOG, Ka-Bar, Eese, Spyderco)? I learned that you can unload and make safe a gun in about three seconds, tops,...but a knife is ALWAYS "loaded." Just a moments lapse with a sharp blade can really alter your life. I didn't have the horrific experience you had but I got my attention twice in three days, let's say that. Wow. If I had a kid, I'd let him near guns before I'd let him near a super sharp blade; too unforgiving. I bet that's another, less obvious, reason Civil War cavalry got rid of those giant razors they used to carry in scabbards in exchange for single shot carbine or just extra pistolas!
Also, not until considering carrying one did I ask myself the question if I would be able to defend myself with one of these tools if I had to? The answer is easy with a gun (and I carried one for 23 yrs) but considering the dreaded "knife fight in a phone booth" scenarios makes one really take stock of what would happen if you ever had to depend on one of these things and your gun wasn't available or jammed...and the other guy had a knife, too. Yikes.

Not that long. Safes are only useful because a thief can't just drag a cart full of equipment into the room with the safe and then proceed to connect it all and make a ton of noise. When someone manages to steal a safe, it's basically useless. There is nothing that can stand an hour against power tools like the plasma cutter and/or a jackhammer.

You can cut anything if it is under a layer of metal. eg. a layer of sheet metal over glass. The only problem is with a material such as glass you would have thermal difeerences that would result in shattering, but other materials can be possible.

Drilling a hole in the safe and filling it with water before cutting the lock out is really the best way to not send the contents to Murdercropolis! All you need is a hole big enough to fit a fiber optic camera filament into and look around. From there all you need is a hand size hole.

EXPLOSIVES ARE STORED IN SAFES!!!! NEVER CUT INTO A SAFE WITHOUT KNOWING EXACTLY WHAT IS INSIDE OF IT. There are many cases of people vaporizing themselves doing exactly that. My brother is an eye witness to a guy using an oxy torch to burn through a safe he got in a storage auction, best as the authorities could tell, it housed professional demolition charges.
