Tested both. GV80 destroys MDX inside out, except for trunk space with 3rd row up and sunroof. I went with the GV80 one month ago and it impresses me since the first time I see it in the showroom. Love at first sight. Lol
I own a 2011 MDX with 100k. Miles and all i have done is synthetic oil changes, tires, brakes and fluids.. can we day that about the GV 80, not yet. In terms of a car that holds or retains its value after 11+ yrs, i doubt Genesis will do the same but only time will tell. The steering wheel in the gv80 is ugly!
Well you can’t really say regardless of price because that’s the reason they are different prices. I can’t say regardless of price this Rolls Royce is nicer than that Porsche. Duh that’s why you’re paying more haha. Their top trims have a 20k difference in price.
@@tuolumne9 I’m sorry but the Q7 is not luxurious, I find the MDX and GV80 more luxurious. I think the GV80 rivals Mercedes on plush luxury and Acura takes the sporty route like BMW or Audi. The issue is the GV80 isn’t much cheaper so why not just buy German and get the real thing if it’s the same price.
personally, i do think that the MDX and the GV80 compete. If I had the money, I would go for the genesis because it just looks super luxourious inside, but i love acura, so i would really have to go try them out before I made a desicion.
Nice vehicles, but the GV80 really competes with the X5 and GLE. I never see the GV80 as a 3 row competitor, but more as a 5 + 2 seater. If you want a Genesis crossover to utilize all 3 rows on a daily bases, wait for the GV90. We might get a V8 engine standard for that model.
Nobody cross shops a GV80 with an X5. It competes with near luxury Asian + American cars , which as this video demonstrates, are way less money. GV80 will not be a sales success. Bad product planning
@@tuolumne9 you already mistake. X5 and GLE after presentation GV80 sales decreased by 2 times in Korea. In Russia very high demand.. if you want order for Gv80 must wait >8month. Good demand GV80 it’s fact!
@@tuolumne9 Not from what I've seen from people who have bought it. Most people who have bought the GV80 have mentioned shopping for European rivals and have chosen GV80 based on comparable amount or more features w/ same upper level luxury fit/finish. Hence why it has more of a luxury overall package vs tech centric functional package like Japanese rivals. But most of the people who go for GV80 have gone for the Prestige package...so that's a factor.
I think Zac got it right at the end when he said one is a premium vehicle and the other luxury. If you just want a super nice family hauler; something better than a Pilot, yes the MDX is awesome! But if you want something nicer and better value than an X5, you look at the GV80. Both nice! But not the same thing at all.
This is the first review that has gone into the handling difference between the two vehicles. The two are not at all comparable: the MDX handles like the BMW X5M / X6M with their Torque-Vectoring AWD systems that make the car corners flat (while offering smooth ride instead of massively powerful engine) . . . whereas the GV80 handles like a lumbering (older generation) Audi Q7. Hyundai is trying to build a luxury brand by copying the European manufacturers: copying Bentley for the exterior, Mercedes-Benz for seat texture, BMW i-drive for the control dial (but recessed instead of raised in order to avoid lawsuit, at the cost of sub-par user experience). Offering 2.5L turbo instead of 2.0L turbo, and 3.5L turbo instead of 3.0L turbo, that Europeans offer, are good benefits for consumers (if they prove to be smooth and reliable in the long run; and if gas stays cheap, a big if). OTOH, some of the copying choices are questionable: besides the bastardized copy of i-drive, copying Audi on being overweight (i.e. using low grade steel instead of high tensil steel and aluminum for structure components under the skin/paint; GV80 is nearly 500lb heavier than the larger MDX!), and choosing electronic LSD instead of active torque-vectoring for lower cost in such a heavy vehicle . . . those are very dubious choices (and Tiger Woods paid for it with his legs!). GV80's most important competitors are likely to be used European SUV's like the base model Q7 (+Q5), X5, GLE, if reliability proves well and if Hyundai warranty is better than the CPO warranties from the Europeans.
@@jims8828 The MDX most certainly does not handle like the rwd competition. True, the swawd will send more power to the rear in on power situations. But in neutral situations, it will feel just like any other fwd rig. Not so of the GV80. And I guess you're uniformed, because you don't seem to know that Hyundai is the only car company in the world that uses steel from its own factory. They do use super high strength steel. And if the designs have cues from other brands, it's because they hired all the best designers from Europe. Far better than what those brands do these days. It takes time for a new brand to make its mark. Genesis will certainly do so. They've already won multiple car of the year awards. They also have great safety, great reliability and high initial quality. Check one out. You'll be surprised.
@@jims8828 Absolutely disgusting to blame the vehicle on Tiger Woods injuries when all the actual experts and investigators have said the GV80 likely saved his life. The GV80 uses both high-strength steel and aluminum in its manufacture. What a completely inaccurate and disgusting comment.
@@canadabear72 I'm quite aware that Hyundai is a vertically integrated company, with attendant nepotism and intrinsic inefficiency. Henry Ford built a vertically integrated empire too in the late 1920's, shortly before near-bankruptcy in the 1930's. Various grades of steel and aluminum alloy are standardized commodities; it makes little sense for a carmaker to make those commodities, except for nepotism and cooking books, and in a market that doesn't yet outlaw anti-competitive practices could potentially pinching off supply to competitors like Kia and Ssangyang Motors before they went bankrupt and were bought out by Hyundai in a double-whammy to Korean consumers: reducing competition and then subsequent bail-out by tax-payers due to too-big-to-fail. Instead of arguing any of the technical points of the two drive systems, your bringing up Hyundai corporate propaganda, which is in reality diametrically opposite to economic reality, goes to show that you are little more than a Hyundai propagandist (like quite a few of the other silly comments). As for driving dynamics, I don't think you have driven an MDX with SH-AWD. In a truly neutral driving condition (i.e. not turning and not accelerating), FWD and RWD drive the same. It is only in making turns and heavy acceleration that RWD handle differently from FWD. MDX shifts up to 70% drive force to the rear wheels when under heavy acceleration (i.e. rear-dominant AWD); in rapid turns, MDX torque-vectoring system can shift 100% of rear axle torque to either left or right outside rear wheel. In terms of handling near the limit, MDX is better than most RWD and on par with the active torque-vectoring systems of BMW X5M / X6M. One can argue that MDX front-rear weight distribution is less optimal than that of the X5, but we have no idea what the GV80 V6 front-rear weight distribution is like. The company is reluctant to even disclose the vehicle's curb weight! It took me a lot of digging to find out it is nearly 500lbs heavier than MDX while being a smaller vehicle. In terms of automotive engineering, GV80 is along the lines of (older generation) Q7 and Benteyga: heavy vehicle chock full of medium-grade conventional steel. People are willing to pay up real money for a Bentley (and to a lesser degree a Q7, which doesn't sell well) even if it were made entirely of decades-old technology simply because of its brand; it's doubtful many people would be willing to pay half as much for an identical vehicle if the Bentley logo is replaced by a Hyundai one, outside Korea anyway. Acura MDX competes in an entirely different way: being light and nimble despite being capacious at the same time. MDX is an engineering tour-de-force, not slathering a thick layer of lipsticks on a heavy pig!
How about waiting for the GV70? Smaller SUV (compact size segment, I believe)? But it looks just as nice, if not nicer than the GV80. I'm waiting to compare. I liked the GV70 sports package I've been seeing. :D
Hilarious, the MDX is very much in the same tier now with this new model. It's amazing how people on the internet underestimate Acuras but these new cars are right on the money. Better priced as well
@@omairsh8 Lol! A cheap American Built Honda front-drive platform is in the same tier!? Gimme a break! Acura had all the time and money in the world to come up with a product as good, if not better than the GV80, yet, as expected, they took the easy route out. Is the MDX a superior product to all its prior iterations, YES, is it better than the GV80, NO! The MDX Type S, however, does look promising, with lighter weight and 355hp on tap, it could potentially be faster than the GV80. That said, it will not be in the same category. Modify the MDX with a proper rear-drive platform and a longitudinal (NOT TRANSVERSAL) mounted engine, and then maybe, just maybe, it can be compared to the GV80 and the Germans. Case closed.
@@philhenderson3516 you definitely haven’t driven the MDX, it may be a front engine vehicle but it drives very much like a rear wheel drive set up, I have driven the MDX and I was shocked how good it felt, I have a BMW X5 although its not X5 territory in terms of power and handling, it was preety darn close in terms of handling and the type S will bridge the gap in power, and not to mention the Super handling AWD system is no gimmick, I was really imoeessed at how they made that it feel so RWD based being a front wheel drive car, that shows me great deal of engineering went into building this thing!!
@@tazwarhossain5283 Different strokes for different folks. The MDX is a very good product, and as I said before, a MUCH better iteration to any of its prior forms, but Honda can do much MUCH much better than this. It's kind of embarrassing to see a bullied and beaten up brand like Hyundai pulling out what Toyota and Honda were/are reluctant to do for no other reason than corporate GREED. Even Mazda is slapping these brands left and right. If Honda and Toyota don't get their act together, they might find themselves in the same lane as Nissan in a not too distant future.
We test drove both and Genesis is really impressive and much better! Genesis is luxurious, sooo quite, drive is smooth and high tech! Also Genesis has better safety features.
Great review! I think this comparison is a good one, I was wondering about these two vehicles. Although one has more power, the Type S is coming for Acura. I think there's great value with the MDX. You guys bring up such a good point with the Genesis' US pricing. Andrea saying the GV80 floats between premium and luxury is so true with that pricing and good marketing. 👌 Love your channel, love Andrea being on.
I love that the MDX is confident in what it is, simply a well built SUV. Genesis marketing tries too hard to market their new car against the Germans for some sort of validation. Love the looks of the MDX way more but that’s personal preference.
Genesis is trying too hard to get into that snobby uppity image. They need to pull back a bit, earn their own spot, and they can start by calming down the designs and oversized grills that seem to compensating for something
MDX all day!! And Honestly the Genesis brand has no identity at all. Even it's logo is like Bently and Astor Martin's. Trying to get be noticed as one of those exotic/expensive brands.
GV80 looks pretty gaudy and I'm just not digging the wheels. Even the Mercedes S Class looks more reserved. MDX looks amazing and it has wireless Carplay. My new favorite feature in a car. Only downside to the MDX is the price.
I test drove both of them last week. I have owned Acura's for years but that GV80 is fantastic! They MDX Type S coming out will be what's missing in this one which is the fun factor. This one pushing all that weight with the same V6 i have in my current TLX is a let down. They should have released both together and let you choose. Now you will have to wait a year while the sticker price wears off the Type S when its finally out and thats too long for me. I believe they are both overpriced. The MDX is over 10 grand more for this model than the outgoing 2020, it isn't 10G better considering your gonna be the test dummy for the full re-design while the bugs get worked out. They should actually discount 1st year re-design.Also the trac pad sucks in the MDX, the Genesis touch screen is wayyyyy better!!
@@ebonix33 You’re still a numb nut. Then Acura is still a Honda. Lexus is still a Toyota. But the Genesis rear drive platform doesn’t share with any Hyundai.
I believe the Hyundai Palasade is closer in competition to the Acura MDX. Nearly the same size, and just about every feature they highlighted for the MDX is on the Palasade.
Great video! GV80 is great if you have a tons of money but I never like rear wheel drive. I rather stick with MDX is for reasonable price. Thanks for sharing guys! 👍🏻👍🏻
Sooooo if they say the MDX is comparable to the GV80...... Then why not compare The G80 to the TLX The G90 to the RLX The upcoming GV70 to the RDX The refreshed G70 to the ILX Go through all those and you will recognize that Genesis isn't preparing to go after Acura, let alone any of the Japanese. They are dead set on preparing new vehicles that can go head to head with the Germans.
I have seen a lot of videos of the G70 vs the TLX. The RLX isn’t a car anymore and the GV70 isn’t out yet to compare to an RDX. I agree Genesis is more luxurious but they are still competing against Acura and Lexus.
@@AFCompany They do compete in terms of market share. In terms of engineering, however, they surpassed the Japanese and are gunning straight at the Germans! There's nothing in Acura's portfolio that could remotely challenge any Genesis. Are the new MDX and TLX good products, YES / better than prior iterations, DEF. YES / on the same level as Genesis, NO. Can Honda change this? YES. Start assembling all of your products IN JAPAN, and give them A PROPER RWD ARCHITECTURE with A LONGITUDINALLY-MOUNTED Engine. Then, and just only then, will they be on par with Genesis.
@@philhenderson3516 Acura will most likely never go RWD which is why their SH-AWD system is one of the best in the industry. They are trying to make up for it. You also have to realize Acura is also cheaper than those cars. If Acura had all those things they’d be another 15k dollars and that’s not Acura thing. Their focus is on luxury performance.
@@AFCompany Well, that's a shame if you ask me! For a company that brags about how great they are (and yes, they were pretty great back in the late 80's / early 90s) it's clear they've missed the mark these last two decades. I find it inconceivable that the very two brands that most people used to kick, bash, and despise (Hyu/Kia) are producing the very products that the Japanese should've had by now. Goes to show what the priorities are! Honda executives only care about producing anything mediocre and profit from it as much as possible. This is NOT the same company I grew up admiring and yearning!
@@philhenderson3516 Hyundai and Kia are not producing better cars than Honda. Genesis is more luxurious than Acura I’ll give you that but you are also paying for that, we will see how well Genesis holds up in maintenance and resale value. Acura is not missing the mark they are right where they are supposed to be. Do you want an Acura to be like a Mercedes? If it was would you pay 70k for an Acura or just get a Mercedes? Acura isn’t stupid they know their market which is why they are priced differently. That will be a struggle for Genesis as well. Why would I pay for a unknown brand when I can get a BMW for the same price with more prestige. Check sales because you may think Acura is missing the mark but the MDX is leading the entire segment at the moment. There is a 3 month waiting list and they have sold almost 20k units in just 2 months.
Agree with everything you both said. I live in the US and I think the base model GV80 is too expensive for what it offers but the top trims are priced perfectly here. I like both cars hard to pick. I like the luxurious feel of the GV80 but the sporty looks and handling of the MDX. Waiting on the Type-S to see how it matches up.
@Andres Perez if I was an Acura salesman I would say I hate the GV80 and tell people not to buy one. You just seem to have an issue with people liking the MDX. Oh well. Just go buy your GV80 and be happy I don’t get it.
Looking to buy by the end of the month and I've test driven almost every SUV in this class. I'm leaning towards the MDX because of the value, dealer experience, and sport ride. I was completely turned off by my Hyundai dealership experience. I'm sorry for 70K I shouldn't have a SUV I need put gas in during a test drive, no explanation of even the minimum features, and the SUV in ship mode with over inflated tires leading to the bumpiest ride ever. I even tried a 2nd dealership...same problem. I'll take a 2nd look at Genesis when they have stand alone dealerships in my area.
I understand why you'd dislike hyundai its a valid reason but genesis is a different brand one fully focused on refinement and luxury just like lexus is different from toyota but unlike lexus that shares many parts with toyota, genesis is mostly independent maybe even will be completely further up in its existence so they wouldn't have such sh*tty customer service because it would ruin the brand image that they r trying to elevate
If Acura would get rid of that Trac pad, I'd consider it. I had a loner vehicle ,RDX, and the service advisor gave me the key fob and said bye.....15 min later with videos on my phone trying to figure out that Trac pad.. don't like it. I still don't like the gear buttons. Old school, like the fear shifter. I find myself pushing the wrong one in my 2016 MDX....GREAT VIDEO. Like both looks but Acura wins!!!
I have to agree with Zack. The value is with the MDX, plus I think it just looks nicer. Not a fan of the large GV80 front grill. Also, no one has mentioned what these vehicles might be worth in 5 years when it comes time to sell or trade in. I can tell you the GV80 isn't going to win that contest!!!
Agreed. Plus the styling of the Genesis might intrigue some people now, but it will look tired and played out in years to come being so 1:1 with Bentley.
you guys are right about 'value'. It's not possible to beat MDX in that department. Does it mean Q7, GLE, and X5 are better than MDX? With the given spec sheet numbers (and looks) I think GV80 falls under the German category. I think Genesis is also trying to make the brand upmarket by attaching that price tag. If you look at the price ratio of GV80 and X5 in the US and Canada, they are the same. Actually, it is cheaper here in Canada (if you make the conversion).
Haha! Good luck with that cheaply built AMERICAN product. ACURA IS NOT JAPANESE, NOWHERE NEAR THE RELIABILITY OF A PROPERLY BUILT JAPANESE PRODUCT, LIKE A LEXUS. Genesis reliability is much better vs. Acura.
I like this review, very honest, realistic, and fair To answer your question regarding the super customer service of GV80 Personally it means zero, most of people looking to buy something like GV8 have 2nd car for their spouse or something, its nice to have this courtesy treatment, but value not too much in decision making..
Great review! I’d choose Acura for greater resale price, Honda’s superior reliability, more space, better affordability, and most amenities that come as standard.
These two are somewhat in the same class, but they both target totally different audiences. The MDX have a more aggressive sporty looks where as the GV80 have a more classy elegant look.
Nice comparison, would like to hear which is the most fun to drive and travel car. Retired and I'm in the market for a new SUV for traveling and shopping both of these in the US. I'm comparing the MDX Advanced to the GV80 Advanced V6, price on those 2 in the US is close but the Genesis is a $3600 bump. Not a great difference in cost but the struggle is which to pick.... Both have their pros and cons. MDX tried and true but that GV80 is just so darn good looking it's hard to beat. Anyone out there with a GV80 that has had any issues?
@@halderavik I have joined the forums. and driven both, waiting to see Acura's new engine 3.0 turbo out in the TLX in the Spring to see if it's worth waiting for in the MDX before making a final decision. thanks.
I don't see them as direct competitors. The MDX seems lower rent (not in a bad way) just less expensive market. You guys nailed the MDX interior = the push button PRNDL and GIGANTIC drive mode button are a total waste of space and nonsensical. That alone puts me off quite a bit. It doesn't have the sophistication of design the Genesis has. The exterior and interior design of the MDX feels like one step up from Honda but lower than Genesis. Acura is still a bit...anonymous looking. MDX is the more practical choice for sure. The Genesis is a RWD luxury suv, aimed a bit more upscale. I honestly don't see them as direct competitors at all. I can understand people cross shopping them but people looking for the Genesis features just will not consider the MDX. Both excellent, and interesting comparison.
Good comparison! 👍 I like both SUVs but I like the MDX price wise compared to the Genesis. I like the styling of the GV 80 a bit more than the Acura and the interior looks a tad more luxurious too. I would not want to pay $85,000 however to get the top trim. It's a tough choice here, I would seriously have to drive both vehicles to make a decision. If the Type S MDX was available, I would have a better idea which one to choose.
MDX has always been representing great value for money when it comes to premium SUV. It has proven heritage through 4 generations and solid resale value. GV80 is the big surprise mainly because its an upstart luxury brand. Without the brand cachet of German trio, GV80's pricing strategy is rather foolish to begin with. 2.5T 7-seater should be their biggest seller but they have tried to push the consumers to the 3.3T.
You should compare the GV80 to the GLE now! I think it's its most comparable German competitor and both of them have that "luxury feel" while BMW and Audi tend to lean more towards the sporty side. A similarly (to the GV80 Prestige) equipped GLE450 is around 110k, so a whopping 25 000$ more than the Genesis!! So when you think about it, while still expensive, the GV80 still fits somewhere between the premium brands like Acura and the luxury ones like MB in Canada
@@dennisvisser6286 I don't know where are you getting your numbers. If you add Nappa leather, premium package, intelligent drive and maintenance plan, it goes north of 95k. I know it is difficult to accept reality. Cars are way more expensive than you think. I do
Very good report indeed even if the huge difference of power does not make them as direct competitors ( I think). At least in.Europe, power, equipment and category are the main elements for compare cars. Ciao depuis Paris.
Genesis, easily. Better than the Lexus for sure, the MDX is about as good as it's been but the Genesis will be a much better drive, be much more exclusive, the tech is better (think old iDrive but better), and the it will be less to own with the free maintenance from Genesis. It's a no brainer.
I am amused by all the reviews that claim the rotary dial is difficult to use. It’s essentially the same concept as the original iPod! I mastered mine in about the same time that it took my GV80 to drive 40 miles more or less autonomously - the HDA mode is unparalleled.
MDX has always been a value leader for what you get. The GV80 Can boast on Warranty. In my opinion The GV80 Loses me in the trim $$$ Additions. As for dealer convenience. I’ve bought several Acura’s from a specific dealership. We are over 50 miles away. Since 2002 they would pick our auto up, leave us an auto. Service, wash and return ours to us. Great To Work With. We were strongly considering a GV80. Now, We are leaning back towards only spending $60,000 Over $73,000
I love the GV80 controls AND it’s throwback style steering wheel. The most complicated Infotainment controls and software is awarded to the BMW X5. Is the GV80 popular? Well, try to find one now. Most dealerships are sold out.
I wish they had the concierge service for Genesis in the US because the dealer experience and network here if horrible. It would definitely make it worth the money here if it came with that service also.
in Canada, it's all online and everyone pays the exact same price. No need to haggle for the price. Volvo will do the same for all EVs from 2022 (e.g. C40 recharge) onwards here in Canada.
I would put the GV80 in the luxury/performance category alongside the GLE and X5. If you want to feel special every time you get behind the wheel, with performance on demand, choose the GV80 or GLE. But if you want a driving experience every time you get behind the wheel, with nice luxury touches, get the MDX (for less) or the X5.
On another note to both brands. I WANT a REAL shifter, touch screen and a proper dial for infotainment. Something Cadillac does right. Brings those screens closer to so we can reach them, and if it's close enough, no dial is needed. But rotary shifters and push button shifters are awful. I had Acura for 4 years, hated the shifter. Don't get me started on Acura's touchpad
All logic suggests that the MDX will easily outpace the Genesis. It offers incredible value, predictable depreciation and comes from a reputable and proven manufacturer. I would suggest the MDX with little hesitation. But there in lies the problem. The top tier GV80 is absolutely gorgeous. But Zack is right about the pricing. So you have to ask yourself... the next time that you go to Costco/Rona/Wal-Mart, 8 months after purchased... are you really going to be at all excited about getting into a silver grey Acura in a parking lot of generic SUV’s? Or do you want something with style, luxury and scarcity? Easiest decision ever... if ...it weren’t my money. Thanks for the video.
The hurdle Genesis has is badge identity. Back in the early 1990s, people flocked to the new Lexus brand because it was known it had the backing of (dependable) Toyota. The jury is out whether Genesis (and I like what they've put out the past couple of years), has that 'something' Lexus had 30 years ago. IMO, based strictly on observation, here in Los Angeles, I see very few cars from Genesis. Those in snobby L.A. are not yet accepting Genesis as an alternative to Lexus, MB or BMW (but there are plenty of cars from Kia and Hyundai that would have otherwise been Toyotas, Hondas and Nissans)..
If price were no option, which is the better ride (apples to apples)? Agreed that consumers will ultimately vote with their pocketbooks, but what I didn't get a clear sense on your thoughts on how they drove, their durability .. etc.
what about 360 degree view in each of these. have it on my lexus es, and wouldn't want to do without it. acura v6 turbo coming.... any hints about what will also come with that, besides higher price tag ?
Genesis/Hyundai/Kia have engines that catch fire while parked in your driveway. Today Kia recalled 300,000 vehicles for that reason. Lot of people are blinded by the aesthetics and don't realize that it takes lot more than looks to compete with the established players.
If the GV80 didn't have that one trim with a 3rd row, would you be making this comparison? as for vehicle for value, just get a top trim of palisade or telluride and save 10+k off either and have more space
I do think they compete in the premium category, and the smaller screen could be a let down at this day and age. The highest trim GV80 does have the Luxury appeal though, which the MDX lacks. If money is not a problem, I’d take the GV80. Otherwise, the MDX.
The MDX is what Acura excels at........Giving a vehicle with a little bit of everything at a reasonable price. The GV80 has power fold down rear seats which are totally unnecessary where as the MDX has traditional fold down flat rear seats. The MDX may not be quite as plush interior wise as the GV80 but it is close enough and offers a more of a sporty feel. The MDX offers enough luxury and versatility that it is the winner even when comparing it to the 3.5 liter turbo. I think that the MDX really separates itself when they introduce the Type S. It is supposed to come with quilted seats similar to those in the GV80 along with matte paint finishes and a rumored air suspension and of course the 3.0 liter V6 with slightly less horsepower but with the SH-AWD and the 10 speed transmission (the GV80 has an 8 speed) I think the MDX Type S easily outperforms the GV80. Even with these additions it will undoubtedly still be thousands less than the top of the line GV80. The ambitious pricing of the GV80 will not go well with buyers. Now what is going to be interesting is how Genesis prices the GV70 which is probably going to be the volume leader and the more sporty SUV. Even still I think the MDX will easily out sell the GV80 and the GV70 because of its versatility wether it’s the standard MDX or the Type S. Bottom line Genesis shot for the moon price wise and I just don’t see buyers flocking to buy the GV80 en mass when they can pay $72000 and get a fairly well equipped X5 or A6 for about the same or even less.
MDX = run-of-the-mill style inside/out, basic materials/finish, functional, safe, no-fuss value. GV80 = high-end style inside/out, premium materials/finish, semi-functional, safe, no-fuss value (but higher due to luxury). Mind you I would only look at the GV80 if it's in the Prestige trim. So that might change if you looked at non-Prestige.
Zac is on the money with this one. Acura and Genesis suffer from the same problem. They think they are competing with the Germans, and in reality they compete more with each other. Genesis has made a huge mistake with it's pricing on it's newer cars. Right out of the gate they think they can ask German prices. I know they are technically a little cheaper, but residuals and lease incentives even out lease payments pretty quickly. They should have kept pricing the same as it was, gathered a following, then adjusted. The G80 used to be a car someone could step up to without heading into German prices. Now, you may as well get the German. Acura has creeped up there too, and again, these two brands really are competing with each other. The TLX is quite overpriced and their Trim levels make no sense across the entire brand, MDX no different. While both try to make a case of value, their top trims are really the only ones worth getting, and by that point, may as well get German or Lexus. One thing not discussed here, Service and sales quality. I had Acura. Honda guy all my life. But, Acura service is not very good, and I'm talking Acura CANADA. Of all my Honda's, they were awful. I tried very hard to get a Genesis in 2019, and it turned into a really bad experience. They had 2 months notice I was driving from another province. I kept in touch the entire time. I get there, nobody offered to show up at my hotel, in fact the salesman was nowhere to be found on the day of, and I had to meet him at a Hyundai dealership where the car I wanted to look at was taken out by the owner that weekend on a LONG trip, and it was infested with flies and dirt, 1200kms on it, and inside was a trash can. It was a G80 3.3T. The sales guy was nice, but the entire thing screamed RUN AWAY. Plus, even after me saying I still wanted the car, we went for dinner, came back, they sold it to someone else?!?!? They brag about concierge service, but what that really means is some guy from a Hyundai dealership picks up your car, brings it to Hyundai and attempts to service it. Yet, if you don't live in a Genesis area, you can't get warranty work done at a Hyundai, so when it breaks down on that road trip, you better be near a Genesis area. Genesis also didn't bring all the tech over from the Korean models.
True MDX is comparable to Genesis only when you put it against GV80s cheapest trim model. Genesis Prestige is so good it pulled this BMW owner away from BMW and into a Genesis. The fit/finish of Genesis is superior to Acura.
Idk...2 totally different overall themes to me. GV80 imo is more plush luxury in terms of design, materials, fit/finish (auto soft-closed doors, active dampening suspension, active noise-cancelling, double-laminated windows, 3D LCD gauges, cooled/heated/power shade rear seats, nappa leather on all surfaces, various wood/aluminum all throughout and suede headliner). MDX being more functional in design, simple materials and normal fit/finish (basic exterior design, basic plastic pieces all throughout, regular wood, regular leather, less sound deadening, less tech - but wireless android/iphone, etc). Basically, the MDX doesn't have the same upper scale luxury features/materials/fit and finish as the GV80. I would get the GV80, but I'm waiting on the GV70 to compare first. :)
Just came back with my wife after test driving both these SUV's and although the Acura MDX is very nice the GV80 is a far superior vehicle in every way. The ride quality, handling, power and braking on the MDX was quite frankly awful. The 360 camera system nowhere near as good as the GV80. The auto hold on the MDX would jerk before accelerating. As far as accelerating, forget about it..lol The braking had far too much travel before actual braking. The ride quality felt rough compared to her 2018 G80 Sport that we currently own. Pluses that stood out for me with the MDX are the seats, sound system, digital dash and the blind spot monitor placed in the interior instead of the side mirrors. Honestly the MDX is not in league of the GV80. You will need a Benz to compare with the GV80. I don't even think a comparable BMW can touch the GV80 imo. I feel pricing is on par for what you get out of the GV80. The hype is real, it's just that damn good.
Come on. GV80 is in another level competing with Germans. MDX hardly can competes with Telluride. Palisade. In reality, Koreans win even in this segment hands down.
Gv80 has better aristocratic style good design exterior and interior, much quality materials and has good guaranties. MDX design and materials cheaper but it has more fan and good reliable history brand.
GV80 pricing is out of whack. The only model worth getting is the top end trim for the 7 seats but you’re entering Mercedes/BMW pricing territory so what’s the value proposition as a new brand?
The MDX looks like it competes with a Hyundai Santa Fe Limited than a luxury looking car like the GV80. When it comes to getting a Luxury SUV I'm not trying to race anyone on my day to day in a luxury SUV. So the GV80 3.5t has more than enough power if people can honestly see past the badge snobbery. In a way I'm glad there is a bit of snobbery so I can be one of the first for awhile riding around in a GV80 with its road presence looking better and different than anything currently riding around out there.
I think I would not even compare the MDX and the GV80. Rear Drive vs Front Drive architecture (not the same engineering/manufacturing price). I would compare the MDX with the Kia Telluride or the Mazda CX-9 (both top trim). Great looking car but I don't consider Acura as a Luxury Brand at this point. It more like a posher Honda. At that point why not compare the GV80 to the Ford Explorer. Similar price to the MDX, rear wheel drive bias and that crazy V6 engine from the ST and Platinum. I mean it is a better car then the MDX. The performance model, coming soon to the MDX, would be considered as a comparison to the Twin-turbo v6 of the GV80 (I am guessing the price will be similar to it also).
Mazda, Kia, and Hyundai aren’t luxury brands, they compete in a different market and at a different price point. Acura is most cross shopped with Lexus, BMW, and Audi. The base MDX price starts higher than the fully loaded Telluride. It doesn’t make sense. Telluride competes with the Pilot, CX-9, and Highlander.
@@canadabear72 Acura is most cross shopped with Lexus, Audi, and BMW. Always has been. Don’t know where you have been. I know 4 people personally who were between an X3 and RDX. 2 got the RDX 2 got the X3.
I can’t understand wanting third row tight seating in an SUV when families that need that space can buy a Van with ample space and modern amenities and even AWD not to mention Hybrid drive as well?
The MDX is a proven car with a solid engine and a better ten speed transmission.just saying. Another thing SUV’s are a family vehicle for kids and so on , it’s not a vehicle to sit in and just look at.
Tested both. The Acura super handling all-wheel drive killed the Genius. You can't go wrong with either vehicle. But Acura drive mode is really good 👍🏽. I bought the MDX because I chose ride over luxury
Ehhhh not so much. Genesis is gearing up to go after the Germans, and not so much the Japanese. Everything that Genesis will make from here forward will be best suited to tackle and trade blows with the German rivals, especially the Upcoming GV70, Electric GV60, and Fully Redesigned G90 all due this year. Its easy to compare them because they are upper mid sized luxury and premium SUVs, but ultimately go after different rivals. The MDX is likely best suited for the RX and QX60, given that they are FWD based, around the same power figures, fuel economy, features, and pricing. The GV80 is RWD based, offers more power than any of the Japanese rivals, immaculate build and material quality, unique features, and just an overall look and presence that is unmatched by any Acura, Lexus or Infiniti SUV. So I wouldn't say its a fair comparison to Genesis or the Japanese.
That GV80 is hands down superior - stunning, more comfort, and more fun to drive
Tested both. GV80 destroys MDX inside out, except for trunk space with 3rd row up and sunroof.
I went with the GV80 one month ago and it impresses me since the first time I see it in the showroom. Love at first sight. Lol
Gv80, does not have reliability or long term term development of sH-AWD systems.
The MDX is near luxury car the gv80 is a premium lux car my opinion cause loaded up both top trims regardless of price the difference is there
Well you can’t really say regardless of price because that’s the reason they are different prices. I can’t say regardless of price this Rolls Royce is nicer than that Porsche. Duh that’s why you’re paying more haha. Their top trims have a 20k difference in price.
The whole point is that the GV80 isn’t more luxurious than an MDX, and not as luxurious as an Audi Q7. It’s overpriced
@@AFCompany because German has bad reliability and much expensive price in same equipment
personally, i do think that the MDX and the GV80 compete.
@@tuolumne9 a gv80 has the same features and luxury as an x5 and gle for way less money, more expensive doesn’t mean better all the time
@@tuolumne9 Not from what I've seen from people who have bought it.
The GV80 does not compete with the X5 or GLE. It’s not quite as nice as those although it is very nice. It’s more like an Acura or an Infiniti.
great review by two people who are pleasant to watch, keep up the good job!!
Well_said!
My wallet says mdx, but my heart says gv80 😫
Gv80 is a head turner
@@ebonix33 agreed... but reality says otherwise. Not saying the mdx is a poor substitute though.

Your heart will say MDX once you buy it. Amazing car and beautiful
Very thorough comparison! The GV80 is a serious contender to the Germans. The MDX is a huge improvement and great value, but not in the same tier.

Thank you, glad you enjoyed the video. :)
Appreciate you guys doing this!!!
Thanks for watching!
It will be interesting to see how the new Infiniti QX60 and MDX compete
They will compete but we have to face that unfortunately infinity is not the Infinity of yesteryear. I’m referring to long term quality
Infiniti is trash...
I’d prefer the 2022 pathfinder w/ zf 9spd than infinity with cvt,,

The G90 to the RLX
The upcoming GV70 to the RDX
The refreshed G70 to the ILX
Go through all those and you will recognize that Genesis isn't preparing to go after Acura, let alone any of the Japanese.

Absolutely. The MDX will probably be worth more in 4/5 years. Despite the Genesis’s higher original price.
Buying something next year and checking out what's out there. I'm between these two. Need to get behind the wheel and see which I prefer. 😎

I agree the GV80 is fancy but the Acura is more value AND that magic word, Reliable! 🎉🥳
GV80 is also reliable, lol, you might wanna look up Genesis ratings
Who told u Genesis was unreliable?
Haha! Good luck with that cheaply built AMERICAN product. ACURA IS NOT JAPANESE, NOWHERE NEAR THE RELIABILITY OF A PROPERLY BUILT JAPANESE PRODUCT, LIKE A LEXUS. Genesis reliability is much better vs. Acura.
I like this review, very honest, realistic, and fair
To answer your question regarding the super customer service of GV80
Personally it means zero, most of people looking to buy something like GV8 have 2nd car for their spouse or something, its nice to have this courtesy treatment, but value not too much in decision making..
We were all set to get the new GV80 but now MDX is the clear winner based on value and the lovely third seat in the middle.. love it
Yes, excellent value and you can remove that middle seat plus the 3rd row is fairly roomy. If you need a 7-seater, the MDX is a great choice.
how does the previous generation of GV80 compares to MDX? that should tell a lot how these two will weigh against each other by the consumers
There is no previous generation of GV80. This is Genesis’s first suv effort.
Great job on your reviews! Are you going to do a Top 5 that includes the MDX?
The MDX made out top ten list of 2021, check it out.
Why don't you join the gv80 forum? Test drive both. I am sure you will see GV80 is not only good-looking.
The Center Console of MDX looks like plastic fantastic
Good comparison! 👍
I like both SUVs but I like the MDX price wise compared to the Genesis.
Very helpful. Thanks!
If you don’t need the “floaty-boaty” suspension or the $6900 stereo upgrade the GLE 450 is in the ballpark of the GV80. I would take the Mercedes.
@@dennisvisser6286 I don't know where are you getting your numbers. If you add Nappa leather, premium package, intelligent drive and maintenance plan, it goes north of 95k. I know it is difficult to accept reality. Cars are way more expensive than you think.

Very good report indeed even if the huge difference of power does not make them as direct competitors ( I think). At least in.Europe, power, equipment and category are the main elements for compare cars. Ciao depuis Paris.
Thanks for watching!
I think he’s technically challenged. He’s the only reviewer who couldn’t get it to work.
Thr bigger Buick Enclave leads the 3-row luxury segment in Consumer Reports rankings.
Only price? What about the drive and feels?
MDX has always been a value leader for what you get.

Let the debate begin, I am ready 🍿
They’re looking to save more money so its over before the comparison even started..
Not really. GV 80 has nothing but looks.

I personally would not own a GV80 because of its ostentatious grille. I like the see-thru model at 1:41, and would like to purchase it.
MDX A Spec in red please 🙋🏻♂️😍
Need a new comparison. Mdx Type s vs Gv80 3.5t
All great points, thanks for this!
Tesla really took over California people don’t even buy the other premium brands they just go straight to Tesla
GV80 in pearl white is probably the best looking SUV under 100k on the market now.
MDX is close to compete in telluride, not GV80.
If price were no option, which is the better ride (apples to apples)? Agreed that consumers will ultimately vote with their pocketbooks, but what I didn't get a clear sense on your thoughts on how they drove, their durability .. etc.
what about 360 degree view in each of these. have it on my lexus es, and wouldn't want to do without it. acura v6 turbo coming.... any hints about what will also come with that, besides
higher price tag ?
I know genesis gets 360
at 13:43 did Andrea said, with Acura MDX you get 4 years or 80K of free concierge service or just a Warranty? That part is not clear to me.
Acura MDX gets a 4 year warranty or 80,000 km, no concierge service, just warranty.
Genesis/Hyundai/Kia have engines that catch fire while parked in your driveway. Today Kia recalled 300,000 vehicles for that reason. Lot of people are blinded by the aesthetics and don't realize that it takes lot more than looks to compete with the established players.
Which one would you pick? Acura Mdx Tech or the GV80 2.5 litre in terms of power?
Confused between the Genesis GV80 VS Acura MDX VS Lincoln Aviator. Any thoughts guys?
1:02 190 torque?
MDX = run-of-the-mill style inside/out, basic materials/finish, functional, safe, no-fuss value.
GV80 = high-end style inside/out, premium materials/finish, semi-functional, safe, no-fuss value (but higher due to luxury).
My heart belong to Acura but GV80 is winner here. No comparison!! Acura need to step up the game
i sick of jep's messy car design it's too much... GV is simple and classy!
GV80 2021 Car of the Year by AJAC.... So...what MDX?
Well MDX doesn't catch fire while parked in your driveway. I'd say that is a good start.
GV80 all the way!
I dislike the front, resembles a Mazda CX-9, the GV80 has a very unique exterior design, Acura does have reliability for its engine and SH-AWD
I think they're close. Type-S will probably price close to the top trim 3.5T

Because vans are ugly.
For my money it’s the MDX 👍
The MDX is a proven car with a solid engine and a better ten speed transmission.just saying. Another thing SUV’s are a family vehicle for kids and so on , it’s not a vehicle to sit in and just look at.
Genesis is nicer, quicker, more luxurious, but $15k more is not worth it.

GV80 is an easy choice when it comes to Luxury.
191 lb/ft of torque? Must take forever in 0-60! I think you meant to say 391 lb/ft.
The Genesis gives me Bentley Bentayga vibes😭
