  • It’s easy to forget that Acura’s MDX was the first crossover to sport three rows of seating. 20 years later, the market is thick with competitors. So Honda’s premium division gave the 4th generation a double-wishbone front suspension, a new architecture with body rigidity improved by an impressive 32% and a lot more luxury in the cabin. The result is a much better MDX. Tom Voelk looks at an Advance model that comes standard with true torque vectoring Super Handling All-Wheel Drive and finds a family hauler that appeals to the entire clan. Well, there is the user interface…

We purchased a 2022 Acura MDX Advanced with SH-AWD. About 1k miles now. Your review is spot on. Smooth power, quiet, great stereo. Easily accelerates to super legal speeds while passing. Handles well. Very pleased with the vehicle.

I’m not seeing this I’m approaching 4000 miles on my Advanced and it’s FAR noisier than an X5. It’s not even remotely comparable. The biggest issue aside from the poor implementations of the vehicles AI systems and head unit is the MPG is abysmal. It’s shocking how bad it is especially comparing to the outgoing model.

The new mdx is very very smooth (unlike the bmw i just had) and rivals the smoothness of the 2 mercedes that i had prior to the bmw. The mpg for the acura is anything but "abysmal" it's in line with the others maybe minus 1 or 2 mpg but seriously big deal. I am extremely happy with my mdx

Good review Tom. Just paid cash for my Pearl Red and I was most concerned about my wife of 53 years, as you know being married and buying a luxury SUV the wife should be involved. Well, I test drove every luxury SUV and the 2022 MDX is by far the best for overall price to value comparison, safety, long standing quality of service and engine design, (Honda makes great engines), looks inside and out with new design is off the charts nice! Having a naturally aspirated Big 6, (not concerns about turbos from 4's) just fine! A more powerful set-up is coming maybe by late fall, but this engine is terrific for the weight ratio. Great 10 speed transmission with wonderful fast responsive shifts working with the engine at correct times. So many plusses with this MDX you must just drive it with the European models and even the Genesis, which may not have the tried and true long term quality control that Acura has. Tiger Woods sure did not come out in one piece, but I give him 10 for that flying move and fast stop!
Many of the brands are just trying to push the buttons and the "snob appeal" gets many who do not do their homework by driving everything and looking at everything. They buy on emotion and want to impress their neighbors, but wait until that three year warranty runs out and you have to order parts on a BMW, Mercedes, Audi or Volvo, etc. Also, have you looked at the cost of just oil changes, five times more money on them. WHY? Scotty Kilmer will tell you why they cost so much and avoid them at all cost. The MDX is the best of all world's and I even noticed on the gas gap it says regular, or premium either is just fine! Very interesting when you see the difference from price over time using regular, etc. It adds up, but then why worry if you can afford a MDX or the others. Life is short. Also, life is a bitch and then you die, and also don't worry, be happy. For the next ten years just trade up every three years of so!

Holy Mackerel Jon, my exact Feelings. Just got my new MDX Advance in Fathom Blue Pearl / Graystone interior ( I looked at the Red, but none would be availbale in the immediate future with shortages with all cars). It us an Outstanding vehicle. Your dissertation is complete!!! I haven't been this excited over a new car in a long time. I leased mine, for 3 years, and now being retired since May 2021, after working 48 Years ( with Years worth of time Commuting in the NY Metro area), mine will have very low miles in 3 years. Based on health, and car market factors, although it usually isn't the finacially correct thing to do, I may Buy it at the residual value of $38K. That's why I will Baby this car !! Be well, and Good !uck with your new Luxury SUV . BTW, I am married 47 years this November, but I didn't bring the wifey along. She can be a PIA with these things. Cars are not her thing... she has her 2016 CRV and is very happy with that. I have the patience for negotiating , she doesn't. So I figured why bring a potential Dissuator along....haha. Pertaining to the fuel choice for the new MDX, the manual says 91 Octane or higher is preferable. It was the same on my 2019 MDX. I found that if I used Premium ( BP, Shell, Mobil Exxon, mostly), which was 90% or more of the time, i would achieve about 1 more MPG, in similar driving patterns. I see a few reviews mentions it is OK to use Regular gas. Regular gas is 87 Octane , at least here in the NY Metro area. I know that Uncle Joey has helped to increase gas prices by over $1 in a matter of a few months. But after a slight break in of use, I will try doing the same comparison. There is plethora of information, right or wrong, that using premium gas is a waste of money. However, I'm a firm believer of top of the line products. Premuim gas is a top of the line product. IMHO, many , if not all manufacturers, put all their technologies into the top of the line product ( cars, appliances, stereos, you name it), and then Dumb it down to the base products. It may be the same with gasoline and the additives used. My 2 cents.

CX-9 is not bothered by mid corner bumps and the steering communicates more. I feel I have more fun in the CX-9, have more confidence pushing it, and can push it more smoothly. I’m sorry, if someone can’t learn this system in ten minutes, they should buy a Hyundai Excel! I’m serious! I get SO annoyed by every reviewer just copying others and saying ‘the infotainment system; hard to understand’ PLEEEEEEASE! C’mon, really?
I taught myself this system driving down the freeway going ‘65’ mph. Nothing to find, nothing to search for. AAAAUUUUGGGHH! It is the easiest system on the planet!!!
Other than the ‘copy of others on some elements’ this review is EXCELLENT! I mean really well done!

Glad you figured it out so quickly Matthew. I'll stand by my observation. And as a media guy, you understand that I can't just say, "It's easy, you'll figure it out", I need to consider the audience as a whole and be responsible. I think I gave the system a very fair shake considering some of the luddites that have slammed it. It's good, not great. And honestly, why the hell isn't LA Times of all publications doing car review videos? NYT, doesn't do reviews any more, that's their reasoning.

@@DrivenCarReviews Sad to say the LA TIMES is a shell of what it used to be. Extremely poor upper top level management over the past 20 years has pretty much destroyed any element of usefulness the paper/news outlet had. I totally understand your review and thank you for acknowledging. You are right, some of the ‘reviewers’ are still figuring out how to use pagers. I’m serious! It’s to take on technology people, it’s not going away. The LAT had award winners in every review category; food, cars, movies, etc. Now, forget it...
But your review was still top notch above all the others. ACURA is NOT it’s sister brand just wrapped in leather (Infiniti, Lexus) it’s a performance class of cars.

I was cross shopping an X5, a GV80 and the new MDX..........Actually I have been eyeing X5’s for years but never pulled the trigger on purchasing one because of the reliability, versatility, price and option packaging. This time around it came down to a choice between the GV80 Platinum and the MDX Advance from my 2016 MDX Advance. My selection boiled down to a few factors:
    1. I like the exterior styling of the MDX over the GV80. Just a little too much chrome and the grill is a little too large for my taste.
    2. The interior of the GV80 might be a little better than the MDX but not by much. They basically use the same materials but differently. I did not like the GV80 infortainment system. The touch screen is just too far to reach comfortably and the circle pad was cumbersome. The MDX touchpad really is a better option contrary to popular opinion.
    3. The 290 V6 in the MDX is a better option than the 2.5 liter turbo 4. It is quieter and more refined. It will be interesting to see how the Type S 3.0 V6 Turbo will stack up against the 3.5 V6 Turbo of the GV80. I think for most people the reliable naturally aspirated 290 horsepower V6 has more than enough power.
    4. You probably can guess I went with the MDX advance. The versatility of the MDX was the deciding factor. That said I was very close to pulling the trigger on a white GV80 premium with the saddle and blue interior. I didn’t know how rare that combination was since you really can’t find them anywhere right now. The dealer was asking for sticker at $72000 which again is rare since I hear people paying above sticker now. I’m happy with my MDX purchase it runs great and has the most comfortable seats in the segment IMO.

DM 300, you and i and Jon , another poster here, are on the exact Same Page. I tested the new Pathfinder ( the Infiniti QX60 is still delayed, albeit it will e costing more than the MDX Advance), Telluride, had a 2020 BMW X5 as a loaner in late 2019 before COVID HIBERNATION. IMHO, tge MDX Advance wins hands down. Muscular exterior design enhancements, improved handling manners, a responsive 10 AT, Safety features Galore, a wonderfully engineered digital instrumentation including the HUD, good rendunancy of the commonly used controls with steering wheel controls ( and or voice commands) to control Navi, Phone, Stereo. Which BTW, the ELS stereo with 16 speakers is absolutely off the charts. My only MISSED feature, which I has in the 2019 MDX, was the included internal Hard Disk Drive / CD player. You could record hundreds of CDs onto the HDD and has easy access to your music And still had a USB port to connect Flash Drives. Now, I will need to load all my CDs o to flash drives. That will require time "burning" the cds via my PC, and copying to Flash Drive(s). In doing so, since I am a music affectionado, need to avoid MP3 compression which changes the CD audio quality. Of course, i could just use the premuim streaming services of TIDAL and Spotify ( i subscribe to both), to play music, but that HDD was great , easy accessible feature. I guess Acura and others have eliminated CD players. Oh well..... I'm enjoying this car than I have in long time. All Novelties wear off.....mine is only 2 weeks so far, but i really like looking at this car in my driveway, and of course, at a 69 yo retiree, look forward to go out to buy the newspapers!!!!!

4:23 Tire cavity noise? That's a new one to me. What's next? A hush kit for the washers/wipers?

Mercedes, Audi, BMW, Etc., cost at least $10K more than a car equipped like an advanced model. They also depreciate at least 30% in 3 years. MDX is not a parade (look at me) car!

Tom, WOW, 20% don't Test Drive the vehicles they are buying ????? I guess COVID may have something to do with that stat. Well, if those potential buyers don't test drive THIS SUV, they are making a big mistake. Without being prejudiced, i just a new 2022 MDX Advance in Fathom Blue Pearl with Graystone leather interior!!!!! This is a spectacular SUV, a if you compare it to the "luxury" competition, for what you get, SH-AWD ( one of the best in the business), fantastic ELS Sound system, road gripping manners and a responsive 10 sp AT, room and extremely comfortable front seats, a great Heads Up Display, Remote Start that ties into climate controls including the front windshield deicer, heated sterring wheel, and much more, It is the best Value by far. I'm a Shopper, always was.... Appliances, stereos, garage door openers, you name it, and certainly cars. I looked at all the Acura MDX reviews ( yours is a very good one), test drove tge RDX and the MDX, Telluride ( too Floaty IMO, and didn't like the silver climate control buttons, but really liked the huge Touch Screen InfoT. ), the new Pathfinder, a 2020 BMW X5, but after driving the 2022 MDX , I took advantage of an early lease termination come on from Acura plus the $1K Loyalty money to Acura customers, and traded my 2019 MDX. Even with the Equity in my current lease of $2500 and the Loyalty $$$$, paying the taxes & fees up front, and still resulting in a slightly higher lease payment per month, i went for it. Hey, after working in business for 48 Years, now retired at 69, Why Wait to enjoy the fruits of your Labor. FYI, the primary reason that I took the plunge, after receiving the enticing early termination offers via Acura, was tge fact that the SUV was Soooo much better than the predecessor. If it was a medicore upgrade, i would have passed and waited until June 2022. I don't use the term LOVE for a car ( Love is for Family), so I'll say that I really LIKE this car!!!!!
