"It doesn't work for me to be myself." Holy shit, Finn, you just cut straight to the core of my biggest struggle in life. ❤

So many people need to hear this and really consider it. I was one of them once upon a time. Kids today are sold a lie that they can be/behave any way they want and that it’s society’s responsibility to accept it. It’s setting them up for failure.

I think the injustice is that people often think of Autism and neurodivergent thinking as bad. I have autism, and to me the struggle was having to adapt to the way other people think, not autism in and of it’s self. It gives so many advantages in our modern world, such as hyper focused thinking (which is great for accomplishing goals), obsession with different subjects (great for learning and information gathering), and even deep analytical thinking that most people don’t try and use. In the metal scene, the hyper fixation and obsession is especially important for musical purposes. As someone who’s on the autism spectrum I really hope that we can live in a world where more people in the metal scene are open about neurodiversity that celebrates it. I’m glad this was brought up in this video.

Right. Exactly. I heard somebody on a podcast early on after my adult diagnosis of PPD-NOS, that their autism/anxiety isn't a setback as much as it can be a superpower if you understand it and harness it. I also think it's important that people learn about the condition I have which I wasn't even aware of that but is basically what I suspect Finn has, like a diet autism that doesn't generally negatively impact your life but it doesn't make it easy... And you've always felt slightly...uhh..."unfit", different, "off", "inappropriate", or like unacceptable... It gave me a lot of relief more than it made me feel like I was less than or handicapped or anything like that which is cool I think and it's probably one of the only positive aspects of this tolerance culture we are forced to live in

Also obviously we think outside of the box or counter to what is popular in a way that many companies can benefit greatly from people like us if they let us do our thing instead of worrying about the way it looks or the process and just let us think. I wish society kept that same energy like they had when I was in elementary school and I was told I could be anything to use my creativity. But they switched that energy up and just restrict you more and more and more under the ruse of what is and what is not realistic

Very interesting discussion. My autistic hyperfocus is frequently directed at heavy music. I used to be far more rigid about what music was supposed to sounds like, but as I've gotten older that's changed. We (autistic people) are frequently seen as only being comfortable with routine because it helps stay calm in an overwhelming world, but at the same time, we endlessly search and analyze for new information about our special interests. Now, I absolutely love novelty in music. When a band does something new (and pulls it off) I get obsessed with breaking it down, pulling out influences, and thinking about the structure of the music. Antimatter by Silent Planet, ABC by Polyphia, Manic by Wage War, and nearly everything by Bilmuri are good examples.

Huh. As someone with ASD-1/Aspergers, I never considered these things. The same chaos of metal is the same chaos of the basement punk shows, and definitely the same chaos I felt becoming a professional cook.

To be honest if you look at the primary fans of “Djent” and the music that came out during its blow up, everyone seemed to be really nerdy (nothing negative about that). I was part of it as well and got so obsessed with the patterns and understanding them. Maybe I’ve been stimming all along since 2010! Lol

As an ASD old-schooler (I just say "aspie," though that might offend some), metal has been my lifeline since the late 80s. Interestingly, I'm not super into the proggy end of things, outside of dipping into some old Death or Necrophagist. But yeah, metal has served both as a method for stimming (diverting mental energy), and masking (putting up a public face as the metal kid now grown into cool musician guy). Yup, you got it!

Think about it....metal is so far from neurotypical that at this point it should be evident that art outside the norm goes hand in hand with being neurodivergent.
You bring in a buncha neurotypicals ya get shit like five finger donkey punch.
To be a true to self artist is a path solely for neurodivergent ppl ( which a lot more of us are, even if we don't know it. Yet)
Neurotypical ppl don't challenge the norm. Hence their art Is well......lame and not genuine

I guess I’d say that I hyper focus on intricate elements/details/layers/textures/poly meter/polyrhythmic grooves in Prog-Metal/Art Rock for example. Even beyond that. Surgeon, 99999999, SNTs, Headless Horseman, and Blawan are, imo, equivalent to Prog groups/projects/artists. 8 minute industrially tinged modular/hardware Techno opuses utilizing the Hexinverter Mutant Bassdrum, Soma Laboratory LYRA-8, and Elektron Digitakt. However, I disagree with your comment regarding bands that are neurotypical are mediocre, and shit, as you put it. TOOL, is a neurotypical band, and they’re geniuses that create Progressive Metal/ Progressive Rock, Art Rock, and Post-Metal magnum opuses with elements of Indian Classical. TOOL changed the game in some sort of way. So I completely disagree with you. What about the outfit Swans? I don’t believe that Michael Gira or Thor Harris are autistic, and Swans is an incredible neurotypical group. Or what about Canadian Born Berlin Based Classical Pianist and Composer Chilly Gonzales? Born Jason Charles Beck in Montreal, Canada. He’s not autistic, but he’s a true musical genius. Pushing the envelope, showing true virtuosity, but doesn’t lack emotion. It honestly doesn’t matter. I think that you’re full of shit. No one is going to disagree with you, so I’ll do it. strongly disagree with you. Neurotypical artists, projects, and groups are awesome. I’m just defending people who are neurotypical because it sounds like you’re shitting on them. Hell even take Ben Frost, an Australian-Icelandic Composer, born in Melbourne, 1980, Age 44, whom in 2016, created one of my favorite contemporary Operas dubbed, “ The Wasp Factory”. It’s an incredible Opera. Yet, Ben is neurotypical. If the compositions are good, which is obviously subjective, then it doesn’t matter if they’re neurodivergent or not. What matters is the quality of the work. If artists keep pushing the envelope of creativity, then I think that’s excellent. So ask yourself, does it matter? You said that Five Finger Death Punch is shit. Listen, I don’t like them either. I think that they’re an okay Groove Metal and Alt-Metal group, but be realistic. Being neurotypical doesn’t make an artist incredible or crap. And no, you did not make a “ legendary comment”. You made a very ignorant comment. Neurotypicals can challenge the norm. I’m not neurotypical, but I’m defending people who ARE, because your comment is really idiotic, and I’m calling you out on it. I can defend people. Right? Even if I’m not apart of their group. So look in the mirror and ask yourself, was the comment I made, created to deliberately shit on people? Ask yourself that. After reading the comment, how do you feel? Do you feel like an asshole?
