  • Did you know Abraham Lincoln fought a duel before he became president of the United States?
I didn’t - it’s something I learned about while researching my last video:
    • An Astonishing Amount ...
and I thought it was so interesting. It seems like one of those facts about a president everyone would know - so, at least for me, why was it such an obscure fact?
This View Master Travels BONUS video explores this topic in more depth than I had time to cover in the last video.
Full credit goes to a book I bought while researching the last video “The Astonishing Saber Duel of Abraham Lincoln”, written by James E. Myers in 1968. Most of the details come from this book with some confirmation of other topics from the internet.
The original hand-written letter from Abraham Lincoln and the images of the letters in the newspaper comes from “The Papers of Abraham Lincoln” papersofabrahamlincoln.org/do...
Maps and other documents or images are from the Library of Congress or WikiCommons. Not every picture used is actually of the person, I couldn’t find images of Whitehouse, Merryman, or Francis.
Pictures at the end are from the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum.
Like most things - there’s a lot more detail to this story than I can really summarize in a short video. Plus, many different people had different interpretations of what happened that day - and most of their stories conflict to one degree or another.
So, maybe this is more a little fictional than solid fact.

An "Audie Murphy" braveheart type person could have chopped down that tall cherry tree, oh wait, cherry tree, chop chop, that's a different president. Well, anyways. Be kinda funny if while Lincoln was showing how he could reach up and lop off a high branch, he suddenly got chopped down at the knees and was then smaller than his opponent was, and had to throw in the saber himself. Glad Lincoln won or we probably wouldn't be born, even! Glad time marched on the exact way it did do. Think about that aspect before you grumble or groan about 'past' things happening, good OR bad things.
