- Mr. Beat explains why there are so many Springfields. It is, after all, such a random name for a city. And Loren from Lorenmakesart helps him tell the story. Speaking of which...

If you are watching this video right now, and you are an American, there is a very good chance that you live in Springfield. Congratulations! You live in the same city as The Simpsons! Or do you?
If you Google “Most Common American City Name,” “Springfield” is what pops up. But guess what? GOOGLE IS WRONG. What is wrong with you, Google?
The most common American city name is actually “Riverside.” Only four states- Alaska, Hawaii, Louisiana, and Oklahoma don’t have a city named Riverside. There’s plenty of
other places named “Riverside” in those states, but not cities. There are 186 cities named “Riverside” in the United States. Worldwide, Riverside ain’t got nothing on San Jose. There are 1,716 cities named “San Jose” around the world. Yes way, Jose.
But this video was about Springfield. Wasn’t it? I honestly forgot. Ok, I think it was. Yes. Springfield. Springfield is still a popular name for cities and towns. There are 41 of them in 36 states. “Washington”, named after that George Washington dude, is the only other name of a city or town other than “Riverside” that outnumbers “Springfield.” (chants) We’re number 3! We’re number 3!
There are three Springfields with more than 100,000 people. One of them is a state capital. Wisconsin has four of them. The awesome person animating this video currently lives in one of them.
It makes sense that there’s a bunch of Riversides because there are a bunch of cities and towns beSIDE RIVERS (and people are generally not that creative with names). It also makes sense that there are a lot of Washingtons because Washington is probably the most popular American that has ever existed.
But Springfield? It’s a bit more random. Why are there so many Springfields?
Let’s go back to the beginning. The oldest Springfield I could find existed at least as far back as the 1500s in Essex County, England. In 1590, a dude named William Pynchon (PIN chun) was born there, and he was mighty proud of that little village. So proud of it that later on he founded a town in the Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1636 and named it, you guessed it...Springfield. This town would end up becoming one of the most important and influential cities in early American history. It played an early role in the Industrial Revolution, and was known as a center for technological innovation. Kind of like the Silicone Valley of the early 1800s. It was known as “The City of Progress,” as lots of stuff was invented there that still exists today. Today Springfield, Massachusetts is known as The City of Firsts. Basketball, postcards, dog shows, and the Republican Party all originated in the city.
Update: Yes, I know I mispronounced "Essex." Go ahead and comment to remind me about that, though. I always appreciate it when the internet keeps me in my place.
Thanks again to Loren for animating this video. Don't forget to subscribe to Lorenmakesart! ua-cam.com/users/ExpoMarker1231
Also, do you live in a Springfield? Where are my Springfield peeps at? I want to hear from you. Don't forget to tell me the state!
Oh ok. Thanks
And it’s Silicon Valley, not Silicone Valley :)
Springfield, Orgeon!
tharockus I noticed this too.Sounds like "Springfulled".
And you spelled "Philadelphia" wrong, too. Speaking of Philadelphia (never referred to as the homonym for a female racehorse when I'm doing the speaking or writing), there are two townships called Springfield in the close-in suburbs and a third one further out. Because only one Springfield in Pennsylvania can actually have that mailing address, only the close-in one south of the city in Delaware County is actually Springfield, PA. The close-in one in Montgomery County and the outlying one in Bucks County are served by post offices with other names.
There's a Riverside in California that's in the middle of the desert
Well that’s logic
Named for being along the Santa Ana River... though, it usually only really becomes a river when it rains hard enough
@@penelopeboivin3191 About as much logic as you’d expect for california
i live near one 💪
@@isaac_ibanez00 California bad
I grew up in Springfield, MA.
Diarra Dunlap samme I'm currently living in Westfield
Same, im just over the river in west side
Live in Springfield VA
186 riversides in the us good lord the mail must be crazy mixed up. trying to mail something to riverside CA and it ends up in the other riverside CA
Zip Codes
That’s why Zip codes exist.
Viko I mean what if you live in Florida before the internet, how would you know which one to send it to
There’s about 6 Washingtons in New Jersey, there’s a Washington 10 miles away from Washington that completely surrounded a Washington
@Felipe Santiago no
"The Simpson's" Springfield may have been named to give everyone a feeling it's their Springfield. However, just about every character is named after locations in Portland, Oregon, Matt Groening's hometown.
I'm proud to live in one of those 1,716 San Jose's. Great video!
Thanks! I knew you were in Cali but didn't know the city. Nice! Silicone Valley represent!
woo! 👌
@C caymer ok then dont use modern technology
Happy to help!
Well you helped A FREAKING LOT.
Springfield MO gang
I’m from Springfield MO too
im from Springfield mo too
sgf mo club!
"Do you know the way to San Jose?"
"You'll have to be WAY more specific."
Matt Groenig used to watch "Father knows best" as a kid. Which was set in the city of Springfield. There was a city close to his by that name , so he thought that was where that family lived.
There are only two places named Townsville on the entire planet:
Townsville, Queensland, Australia
Townsville, North Carolina, United States
...and there are two places named Townville (without the 's') on the entire planet:
Townville, Pennsylvania, United States
Townville, South Carolina, United States
Not many communities can lay claim to sharing their name with the fictional American city in which The Powerpuff Girls are from.
There is only ONE Canandaigua on Earth, that being in western New York!
THE CITY OF TOWNSVILLE IS ON FIRE!
Thats basically just calling a town "Townstown" and "Towntown"
@@xerango_8659 "Towns Village" and "Town Village."
Of course Riverside gets it. Duh what do we call this place? It's by a river, so I've got the coolest name possible! I love places that get that treatment twice; Cuesta Grade, Laguna Lake, Tabletop Mesa, and best of all Cerro Obispo being called Bishop's Peak as if it's a different name (all in San Luis Obispo).
BTW, the animation made this awesome!
+The Cynical Historian So you're implying it would suck without the animation? ;)
Mr. Beat drr no, I'd never (nervously tapping fingers together) LOL
The Cynical Historian wow small world I live in SLO too!
If you're curious. Springfield was founded as Agawam in 1636, it wasn't renamed Springfield until 1641 when splitting from Connecticut because Pynchon was reasonable with the Indians with fair trade over the Connecticunts who sent a guy with one hand with money and the other a sword. So it was renamed in his honor...after his hometown.
Plus the author Thomas Pynchon is a distant great grandson if you're interested.
From Springfield, Illinois here: I sincerely believe Springfield, Illinois has the supreme claim
to being the Springfield of the Simpsons. I mean hey, we got a dirty (practically radioactive) lake and next to that lake we have a massive power plant! And don’t forget the numerous corrupt politicians that exist in our capitol building!
Hello fellow Springfieldian from 2 years in the past!
@@trevorgayworth Always good to meet another Springfieldian! 👋😎
Great video. Loren's animations are fantastic.
I'm thinking you and I should hire her full-time. What do you say?
Mr. Beat Id say have her animate part time because I understand animating is a lengthy task, and plus I love your traditional format of your video
yeah they made me feel quite cheerful LOL
I am from Essex and I absolutely love the way you pronounced totally wrong but very funny and the first time I have ever heard it pronounced that way!
I am guessing that he probably also pronounces "solder" as "sodder"
Same, I thought he said Texas, england @ first haha
Yeah I live in Essex too and I wondered what he said until I read it 😂
I think he also mispronounced that Simpsons guys name, Groening
Omg your views and subscribers would skyrocket if Lauren did all of you animation. The quality of you content + her animations would basically make you the next CGP Grey
As me being a person who lives in Springfield, ma I can confirm we are a very historical city but we were better then than now...
I used to live in Joplin, MO. I always enjoyed going to Springfield. If you travel south of Springfield, you'll get to Ozark. There you'll find Lambert's. Home if the thrown rolls 😊
How can one state have 4 Springfields? Isn't that kinda confusing? BTW, LOVE your videos.
Wisconsin surely has five Springfields.
New Jersey has 6 Washingtons
All 4 are civil townships, whose names only had to be unique within their county. None are incorporated as villages or cities. And I imagine their mailing addresses all use community names that _are_ unique within the state.
Ey finally a Missourian around here!
Missourians represent!
Fuck yeah boysss
I live in Springfield Mo. too😃👌👌 was also born there too.
Aye. I live in Springfield, IL the state capital. Fun fact: the city's original name was Calhoun after former Vice President John C. Calhoun. It was later renamed Springfield in the 1830's. Local history says it was renamed because of Spring Creek (in nearby Macon County) and founder John "Kelly's Field" other sources say it was renamed because of the famous armory of Springfield, MA. Also fun fact, Springfield Armory, Inc. taking its name from same armory is a guns manufacture in Illinois, just not Springfield but rather in Geneseo to the northwest.
I actually used to live like 20 minutes away from Springfield MA
My grandma is from and still lives in springfield Massachusetts!
i live in springfield Massachusetts
Springfield MA, represent
Northampton
Same here.
Mo. for me👌
Mr. Beats there is no town or city in Massachusetts (Where I grew up) or New Hampshire (Where I now reside) named Riverside. In Massachusetts there is a section within the town of Billerica called Riverside and in New Hampshire the town of Seabrook has a section known as Riverside, but in neither case is it a independent municipality.
I live in Springfield Illinois and mr.beat thank for putting Illinois in this video
I live pretty close to Springfield Oregon.
Springfield, MA. . . Thank you for the great video. I've also ATTEMPTED to visit the original Springfield in England but it was gobbled up by Essex/Chelmsford. BUT I did find the street leading into the old Springfield and grabbed a pic of that.
I'm a lifetime resident of Massachusetts North Shore, but I attended College in Springfield, MA. Still keep in touch with a few friends there.
I’m from Springfield,Ma. We are also home to the first armory in the US. Shay’s rebellion was important in winning the Revolutionary war. You forgot to mention its home to Smith and Wesson. We have so much history.
My wife is from Springfield. Springfield, Idaho, that is. Though small, it is frequently visited by those engaged in visiting all Springfields.
I'm from NJ which has a Springfield and several Washingons (one of which I lived in), and now live in TN which has both a Springfield and Shelbyville.
Springfield mass native here, very excited about this representation.
LOL I actually live in Springfield (MA)
I think the Simpsons' Springfield is in a state without a Springfield in real life: Kansas.
I think you're on to something there
No it's in oregon.
It's Oregon. Groening said he based the show on his own family from Springfield, Oregon, and hadn't noticed there were so many Springfields until everyone thought it was their own Springfield. Eventually he started taking advantage of the mystery by putting the characters in deserts, flields, or other settings whenever it fit the story.
Me Beat I want say your lessons are something to look forward too :) my high school teachers were boring ! Thanks 🙏!
Aww, thank you. That means so much. Glad you dig my style! :D
Most bet that The Simpsons Springfield is in Oregon due to Matt Groening's home state and names such as Ned Flanders were inspired by Springfield and Portland. The Film Theorists theorized it's Oregon narrowing down the geography from seasons 1-9.
In my state (NJ) there are 3 Springfields....and I think 3 Washington’s and Unions as well
I am watching this while drinking Springfield Cola.
I was born in Springfield, Tennessee I have been living here, around The Nashville, Tennessee Area my entire life.🙂👍👌
o-url
I had to click on this video because, I too, am from Springfield, MO. ....well I went to MSU and half my family lives there so close enough. I'm actually from Butler, MO which is south of KCMO which is the last video I watched of yours and lead me here. Because there is a HUGE difference between KCK and KCMO.
Awesome. Thanks for watching both videos :) I live in Lawrence on the Kansas side. I plan on visiting Springfield soon actually!
Speaking of non creativity in place names...I am a native of the Kansas City area..Kansas City, MO..not KS, but even after you've figured that out, I am from Kansas City, North, which totally surrounds a small city called North Kansas City...
Riverside's tally is kind of a cheat as the name often refers to neighborhoods within towns of another name. They get postmarked, too, adding to the confusion.
Yeah, but that does apply to "West Riverside" in New Orleans, LA, right? If so why does LA have no "Riverside"s?
not to mention the first National Armory responsible for the development of the Springfield Trapdoor rifle, the Springfield 1903, the M1 Garand and the M14
I'm still sad it closed in the late 1970s
I grew up near Springfield SD. It's probably one of the smallest Springfields, but it's a very nice river town.
fun and informative :) Loren did a great job on the animation
Thanks! I hadn't heard from you in awhile. Alaska! One of those few states that doesn't have a Springfield. 🙂
I'm from Joplin (about 60 or so miles west of Springfield, Mo), I think Joplin might be of the least popular names for a city in the US. when I googled it I could only find like 6 places in the US named Joplin and only one of them is an actual city and not just uninhabited locations or census designated locations. Obviously I live in the one that's actually a city that has people inside of it.
I think a video on some of the least popular names of cities in the US. id love to know what names are actually the least popular. I'd assume there's a lot of ties tho. I think it would be interesting.
I live near Springfield, MA but didn't know it was so important to the history of the world and that it was the first Springfield in America! Neat!
I'm a white anglo-saxon protestant who grew up in Springfield, Massachusetts.
There is no Riverside Massachusetts. There is a T stop that is part of Newton, MA but not a separate town.
i live in Springfield mo
I'm hoping to come down there in a few weeks
Commenting from the largest Springfield in the U.S.! (The Missouri one).

Me too bro😋👌👌
I lived in Gainesville and Springfield
Both in Virginia
From Springfield, Mass- also home of Smith & Wesson, the Springfield Rifle (see Gary Cooper movie), Duryea Motors (1st Amer. Car company), and Indian Motorcycles! We are genuine Mass-holes.
Hey Mr Beat! I love your videos!
But it's Silicon Valley (after the semiconductor element) not Silicone Valley (after the plastic)..
My parents are from a small town in Mexico named SAN JOSE de la Paz. And I live in Illinois. Our capital? SPRINGFIELD.
I've been to Springfield Missouri
There are a lot of Oaklands and Riversides, too. But only eight cities called Portland and five called Pittsburg(h) in the US, though.
Ive been to Springfield in Essex quite often, I lived in Chelmsford for a while and always had to pass through Springfield. Never realised it was such a common place name in Americaland
Tell your students I'm young and hip and I love your shows , your always on point .. cause i know young kids find their teachers boring. So yu can use me as an example
Springfield, Missouri is home to the ever great Bass Pro Shop
I got curious when my Dad took me to Springfield MA for a weekend.
I am not from Springfield, but they host the Ozark bowling tournament every single year and we have been there every single year since I was a kid!
I'VE HAD THIS QUESTION FOR SO LONG OH MY GOD
Springfield Mass rules.
Springfield MO: "Hold my beer!" :)
Live just outside Springfield Mass, nice area, as long as you stay out of the city.
paladin252 same here, and I can definitely agree with ya there
It’s getting better in ways
I grew up in Agawam
go Westfield
As a kid I only thought the Simpsons Springfield was in my state of Kentucky because there’s a Shelbyville close by to it about an hour.
I'm in Chicopee Massachusetts so Springfields right next door. I was just wondering why there's so many Springfields in different states and thank you for answering it. Got a little early American history
it is believed the Simpson's Springfield is in Oregon as it is close to the ocean, has mountains over 8,000 ft and Groening grew up in Portland; naming characters after streets in the city (Flanders, Lovejoy, Quimby)
Greetings from Stafford, VA which is 45 minutes south of Springfield, Virginia which is in the Washington, DC metropolitan area.
Matt groening is from Portland Oregon my current city and there is a Springfield with 60,000 plus people just over 100 miles south
I'm from Decatur, IL which is 45 mins from... you guessed it, Springfield, IL!! :D
Guiding Light took place in Springfield.
But they never mentioned a state
You just got a sub good work
Fun fact: Riverside, MA is actually a part of Cambridge, and not considered a separate city/town. (and, yes, it is alongside a river, the Charles River!)
We don't have many towns/cities that share the same names in New Zealand, but we do have Palmerston North & Palmerston. We also have a Springfield that I have been through twice. It has a The Simpsons Donut monument near the entrance to the town.
Basketball was Invented by a Canadian man from my hometown of Almonte, his name is James Nasmith, he based it on a game he saw kids playing in the fields with rocks and baskets.
I used to live right over the border of Springfield MA. in Chicopee. I'm surprised you didn't mention it was the location of the battles of Shay's Rebellion, which helped inspire the need for a new Constitution. Also, home town of Theodor Geisel, AKA Doctor Seuss.
I live in Massachusetts, and sometimes we drive by a Springfield.
Actually, we don’t drive by it, but I’ve heard of it a lot, and I’m glad that I live in the state with the best Springfield.
not the best but getting better
There’s actually only one Springfield which exists in a dimension separate from our own, and every state that has a city named Springfield actually just has a portal leading to *the* Springfield
Riverside isn't the most common city or town name in the U.S. There's no city or town called Riverside in Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, and I could probably keep going. Some of these states have neighborhoods called Riverside in some town or city, but no town or city named Riverside.
I live 42 miles from Springfield, MO and I’ve also been to Springfield, Illinois. Dang there’s so many Springfields
They're everywhere!
Hello from Warrenton Mo.
Springfield Missouri!!!!!!!!
I grew up in the Springfield Massachusetts area.
Springfield borders my town. It’s called the Eugene Springfield Area. Eugene with a much bigger population! About 110,000 more.
Because people would walk out into a field. And there would be a spring.
Thus...
I love those little characters
Matt came from Springfield Oregon as well
aaaaaaa Loren’s art fits perfectly
I live just south of Springfield Mo in Branson
As part of Springfield’s industrial heritage it had the Springfield Armory. Which was the first place the United States Army manufactured rifles with interchangeable parts. Which was a big deal
1716 San José literally? Or does that include all towns named for Saint Joseph in other languages?
Montreal = Mount Royal = Monterrey = Königsberg.
First, allow me to make one correction: The Republican Party was actually founded in Ripon, Wisconsin.
I like to think that the Springfield of Simpsons fame would be in Kentucky. There's a city near there named Shelbyville, which sits on the Ohio River at the tri point of Kentucky, Indiana, and Ohio. Seeing multiple states from one point was featured in a couple of episodes.
I see people saying that having multiple Springfields in a same state'd be confusing but I think you can still differentiate them using the counties, tho I hope there's none in a same county because then he'd be really, really confusing!
SPRINGFIELD PENNSYLVANIA BABY! Right outside of Philly !

Similiar thing happened Preston Idaho in Napolean dynamite has the same name as the town i'm in Preston Lancs.
