there’s a way to completely get rid of UA-cam shorts. If you click on the little three dots in the top right corner of a UA-cam short and click not interested, it goes away. Do this for every single UA-cam short you see. No exceptions. Eventually UA-cam will stop recommending them. I haven’t watched a UA-cam short in months now and I’m never going back. Honestly I forgot they existed until this video brought them up again
the biggest thing i hate, is that youtube is retroactively turning older short videos into shorts automatically, or hiding the originals to push reuploaded shorts from different people. it's awful

If you're watching UA-cam Shorts in a browser, in the url, you can replace "shorts" with "watch" and then you have a normal video.

What I hate is how all short form videos seem to have automatically been retroactively converted into shorts. I can't watch an old meme video or vine that existed before shorts were a thing without being teleported into shorts.

I've often stated that TikTok is damaging society by pushing the worst kinds of content out to people and overall shortening our attention spans to that of goldfish; but for some reason people still eat it up. UA-cam was made to be optimized for long-form video content; with its algorithim rewarding videos that get people to stick around from start to finish. And, as awful as TikTok is; it's optimized for endlessly mindlessly scrolling through short, vapid, empty content. There is no middle ground between the two platforms.
I'm sure google just smells more money in a tiktok type model for their video streaming service. If they'll become sure that flipping youtube on its head will be advantageous to them, they'll do it.

In my experience (even without YT Shorts), I've found that I tend to mindlessly scroll through tons of content even within UA-cam's long-form videos.
I think that the issues with short-form videos were a long time coming (as people have said the same kinds of criticisms about other social medias in the past, including regular UA-cam), it's just that it took entering the 2010s/2020s before people changed the narrative from TV rotting our brains, to social media in general doing it instead.

I use UA-cam shorts for my videos because my normal videos don’t get NEARLY as many views. I hate when people get millions of likes for stolen content, and I spend 5 hours drawing something and only get 24 likes. (I’m not the best artist, still learning, but still)

My biggest issue with UA-cam Shorts is the aspect ratio. Literally every video on the platform looks like shit because they cut off the sides. I've seen many instances where UA-camrs upload two versions of the same video, one for UA-cam shorts (vertical), and one in the standard widescreen format. And every single time, the widescreen version looks a million times better!
especially the videos of cats cooking, it's really ridiculous and inhumane. I mean, why do the owners of the UA-cam account move their cats aggressively and edit the videos as if the cats are cooking for their owners?

The biggest reason I tend not to scroll through UA-cam shorts is because it gives me eight thousand shorts that aren't related at all to what I've previously watched. Like, I'll watch a cute video on making a Hello Kitty plushie and then scroll down, expecting something similar, but will then see some video about a couple redecorating their house that I couldn't care less about.

As a gacha creator myself, this is just so sad that someone can randomly put their ocs making different faces and make them "react to another video" then get wayyy more like than someone that will spend houres tweening, editing, imagining an original story, etc. ( of course this is not only with gacha creators, but some reaction youtuber too )

The worst short I’ve seen was a pretty well done animation of a borzoi with a gas mask going down thanos’ mouth, then through his intestines to relieve his constipation, and it was posted like a few months after the “didn’t I do it for you/let me do it for you” trend died
I really think that UA-cam shorts should be a separate website and app from UA-cam. The short form content is so different from what UA-cam actually is that it doesn't make any sense to mix the two together in any way.

it's that, it is the default starting screen on phone, almost always youtube starts on a loud short
then we have the fact that shorts took small videos on random channels and then labeled them as "shorts"
it's even worse when you notice that the short format is limited needlessly, right click/copy link, paste it on nav bar and profit, the video is already registered as a normal video and youtube automatically presents it (forcefully) as a short removing the features on a normal video, like the quality or the dislike
they are trying so hard to compete with tik tok when all they need is just repair their god forsaken strike system
It isn't unless you're foolish enough to keep closing the app with shorts open. The app goes to either home or shorts depending what you had open last.

UA-cam Shorts are a double edged sword. On the one hand, there are some genuinely entertaining shorts, from creators like Ray William Johnson, Greg Renko, Matt and Justus, Syd and Olivia, and Big City Potato Company, that offer bite sized bursts of hilarity, but others are just mindless bits of cringey nonsense.

There was a Gacha tiktoker who recently passed and people made many tributes for them. Somebody stole one of these tributes and reuploaded it to UA-cam Shorts as one of those “which do you think is better?” videos. Disgusting.
As a UA-cam shorts creator, I completely agree. Us high quality creators get shat on by UA-cam and those that upload crap get millions of views, it's unfair and it has to stop

Honestly, I've come across some really good shorts. A channel named Eevee and Yoshi has a lot of good shorts about these two ragdoll cats, and it's a good mood booster. However, I have occasionally come across bad, low-effort or just plain bizarre (and not in a good way) shorts you described as well.

The worst UA-cam short I watched was a chemistry video, because I don't watch shorts enough to see something I actually don't like.
The fact that YT Shorts are like this pisses me off so much that I end up being beyond pissed and it straight up becomes as kidney stone.

I rarely actually watch shorts, and would put it off as “just worse and lowers people’s attention spans.” After shorts came onto UA-cam, I noticed that the attention spans of my friends massively decreased. If the video didn’t interest them in the first ten seconds, they clicked off. I didn’t know that it was actually this bad, thank god I’m not addicted to it.
When my friend used TikTok for the First time, he became addicted.
Now even If I scream his name at him, he Will be Stuck on the screen and he won't even move his eyes nor even Blink, Just watching TikTok. I took his phone to take a look and the videos were cringe and uninteresting. I told my other friend to not end up like the other one that got addicted.
I tried to do my best, but he decided to shrug It off and rot his brain.

The algorithm for Shorts is also terrible, if you watch videos related to minorities you will get hate videos recommended and (worst of all) if you watch cute animal videos you will get recommended gore and animal cruelty videos.
I've straight up stopped searching for rabbit videos because they keep recommending videos of baby bunnies dying of seizure or getting run over by cars 🤢

As someone who watches the UA-cam shorts I really do agree with every point you’ve made. From us lowering to the bar to sea level to the complete mismanagement of the separation between videos and shorts . 😅 I hope to see a day in the future that it really is more categorically separate than it is now. The worst short I have ever seen was a video of a cat who had been hit by a motorbike and it’s body was all tangled and twisted stuck inside in the bike wheel and one of its eyes was hanging out of the socket. Actually horrifying.

There are some genuinely sweet and good shorts creators though. I’m subscribed to a number of them (though most of them also do a bunch of long form UA-cam videos as well). Master Builder Alec, who is a Master Builder at a Legoland and shares his and other Master Builder’s creations, Jordan Howlett who talks about all sorts of things in a kind and funny way, and Scott Christian Sava who is an amazing artist that shows his works as well as thoughts and musings. They are all wonderful and wholesome, and they are but a number of the UA-camrs in my subscriptions list that use shorts in the best way. I understand how bad shorts can be but at the same time I fully believe there is a place for them and that all hope is not lost when it comes to good shorts and good shorts creators
I’m so glad I’m only subscribed to one channel that posts shorts and it’s for a band so it’s mainly just behind the scenes for music videos, I feel like I beat the system
