About 21 years ago, my mom called me in tears. She'd been watching Austin City Limits and they were showing SRV's concert and she was absolutely mesmerized at this new artist she was listening to. Well, commercial break time comes around and they announce that this is a reshowing on the 10th anniversary of his death. It broke her and that's when called me and asked me if I knew of him. I said yes and that's when she chewed me out for never sharing/telling her about Stevie. She's now 81, still loves him to this day and so do I. Think I'll pick up this book for her.

I saw him four times and even stood next to him while he played a video game before the show and later on the steps of his bus, he look at me at i looked at him but I was awestruck having just seen him play for the first time. I met Jimmie years later and thanked him for the music. I shook his hand and told him how I almost shook Stevies hand. Jimmie was appreciative and thanked me. Just good people with great talent. Stevie embodied all those great talents we all grew up with in the 60's and 70's. Great music, the real deal gone way too soon.

So much untold. His sobriety was a wonderful thing. But in his own words, he still was not well. Indeed, his playing and singing were still phenomenal but he still had struggles. Most people think Riviera Paradise was written after his sobriety. That is not true. In his own words he stressed it was called " OUR Rivera Paradise". He was working on it for Lenny. Another love song for his wife. Stevie and Lenny had an apartment that had a small balcony. Only enough room to string up a hammock. Stevie and Lenny would open the sliding doors to the balcony and pull down this bamboo blind they had. They would let the a/c blow on them as they shared the hammock. Stevie called this balcony and hammock " OUR Riviera Paradise. " He would say it to Lenny. He also stressed this to Australian host Billy Pinnell as he played a bit of it. Lenny was at this interview. Stevie corrected two seperate interviewers on the name of this song. " OUR Riviera Paradise. After his forced divorce, it was just Riviera Paradise. Stevie plays " Lenny" on the guitar she & friends bought him. He also plays Riviera Paradise on the guitar from Lenny. Somehow, a way of amends. Keri Leigh can also tell you Stevie still had inner work to do. Don't be fooled by a certain someone. Despite the tumultuous relationship, Stevie's heart was with Lenny. He was petrified of being alone. As Andy states, Stevie had no choice but to get sober. He wanted Lenny to do the same. She boarded the plane. Got scared of sobriety and other things and got off. She wasn't ready. Maybe if someone wasn't in the way, and Stevie and Lenny could have some time together with her cleaning up, they would have been together. Cutter and a few friends despite all, spoke to Stevie & Lenny being a love that was meant to be. Don't forget, she took up for him when he couldn't do it for himself. Many don't know that.

Then I'd play my Les Paul and rip out many many blues licks..... metal and flamenco styles. Latin rock too. Santana style. Trower, SRV, Buddy GUy, ALbert King, STeve Cropper, Jimi, Jimmy Page,.... Those were the days, back around 1991.
Godammit. Just when I think I'm over his death. My friends and I would take the train from ronkonkoma to Penn station then make our way to South Street Seaport to watch SRV from a few rows back in the hot summer sun. I remember exactly where I was when I heard the news. Effin helicopters.

Stevie would’ve been an alcoholic if he’d sold paint. His father was alcoholic, as was his brother. It’s just SO sad that Stevie was ready to get married and they were talking about children-it’s a nightmare that he died.💔
