We visited Jackson, the capitol city of Mississippi, and were astonished by the overwhelming financial distress that permeates the city. The capitol building itself was beautiful, as was the downtown, but get a couple blocks out and the city looks like it's falling apart.

People are upset that the only parts he visited were the “bad parts.” But many people saying that haven’t lived anywhere else but Jackson. Once you live somewhere that is way nicer, when you go back you really realize how depressing the city is. My family lives in Jackson, but I’ve never lived there. Always coming from my hometown to visit was always shocking to me. The roads are terrible. The houses are dilapidated. The buildings are abandoned. There are multiple stray dogs and cats everywhere. You see people standing around during the day instead of working, tons of litter, random cones in the street to cover pot holes, etc. JSU is nice but I never wanted to go there because Jackson as a whole is trash. When my parents lived in Jackson in the 80s and 90s, that’s really when things started to go down hill.

We broke down near Jackson heading to Louisiana. This was back in the late 80s. Blackwell chev. Were life savers. Even though they were busy, because we were travelers, they moved our car to the front for repair. As we waited they sent us out to breakfast. When we retired our car was ready and so was the bill. They were fair and honest. This makes me sad to see this. I hope the business is still open and doing well.

Blackwell went out of business in the late 90s because the Blackwell children did not want to continue their dad's work (I know the family). The location was torn down and a Chrysler dealership was built in that place. Now there are no local dealers -- every car dealer is part of a large conglomerate.

Jackson is in a death spiral. I lived there (actually Ridgeland) from 1988-91. But people with money were already moving to Madison County. So, the population decreases and those that remain have no money. Tax receipts crater. Then infrastructure suffers. More flight. Incompetent and corrupt government? More flight. Ultimately, if you drive down State Street, the main drag into Downtown, and see the endless potholes and broken water mains, you know it’s over.
It’s a terrible shame. It used to be a nice town. The people deserve so much better.

South Jackson makes Downtown look nice. South Jackson literally looks like a third world country. Nothing but abandoned houses, trash, people walking the streets, drag racing, people riding 4-wheelers and dirt bikes instead of cars because the roads are so bad, etc... As someone who is currently in Jackson. It is really sad out here. I’ve lived in northern states most of my life(Maryland, Virginia, etc)
. So when I came here I was so shocked at the lack of infrastructure and conditions of the Neighborhoods and buildings. There are constant fires because of the amount of abandoned buildings and trash that’s strewn Around the city. When I arrived at the now defunct greyhound station the first thing I notice was the smell.. it reeked. The water has caused me to break out in rashes alll over my neck and arms so I can’t shower as often as I used to because of the constant broil water notices. And there are little to no resources for those who need them so crime is a constant. Clearly the little money that comes from tax payers and federal funding isn’t being used to better the lives of the citizens. I really suspect that the govt’ officials of this city are hoarding funding and resources for themselves while they let it’s states capital and it’s residents rot. I feel bad because not only is it a bad introduction/representation of the southern states for a first timer, it makes me yearn for the day when I finally leave this soon to be historical ghost town behind.

In addition to being the capital, Jackson is our state’s only true metro area, even if a relatively small one. It is geographically located smack dab in the center of the state. It should be in the interest of everyone in this state to have a healthy and thriving centrally located capital city. However, almost every proposal brought up each year at the state level for the enhancement of its capital city is shot down in the state legislature. While I don’t absolve Jackson’s local leaders from all responsibility, the issue extends far beyond that.

Livelong Jackson resident, born in 1961 and lived there until last fall. First of all the city itself is having trouble because most of those who did support Jackson years ago have left to go to a better life in the Hinds, Rankin and Madison county suburbs. Jackson's problems began in the mid 90s when black politicians took the city council and decided that "this is our time, whitey was in charge for too long." Since then these "leaders" have only looked to increase their stature and power. We have had several "passable" mayors, but most have let the city fall apart and forced those who could leave for the suburbs. The reason you did not see anyone downtown is that just walking there is dangerous. You drive into there in the morning and head out in the afternoon (you do not stay past sunset). The biggest indication of how inept the city is that the city needs a new trash collection contract. The mayor threw out the company that has done an excellent job for 20 years to go with a shady company out of New Orleans. The council rejected the contract three times, but the mayor called an emergency and let the new company take over without a contract by vetoing those negative votes. Now the city is without a contract, in court to sort out if the mayor can veto a negative action, and this new company has been collecting without a contract or payment. Those who live outside the city can see how corrupt this is, but those still there are so "colorblind" that they elected the do-nothing mayor to a second term. (BTW, the Shoney's you shown in the opening was torn down last week -- if they could only tear down a lot more of the city before all the people who can pay for it head to the suburbs -- like me.)

Too many cities and towns with larger Black American population fall into decay as soon as Whites leave and Black assume leadership of its government administration> It can't be denied because its as obvious as day and it doesn't take a genius to see and know what the problem is. Half-ass educated Blacks who dress in nice business attire but couldn't fix a flat tire, because they look too good and are being allowed to have "TOO" much money for doing nothing, Secondly, a decline overall in much of Black Americas morals, ethical and social values to the point of Blacks allow other Blacks that are shady with a half ass education to rule over them, mostly likely because those at the bottom are too many half ass educated themselves that have produced generations of degenerates that have not a drive or strong determination to unite with one another to educate oneself to produce and construct ones own economy without the Whites holding their hand. With all that Virgin land in and around Jackson , The leadership of Jackson could establish businesses in farming and agriculture that could supply Black America groceries and supermarkets with product, cotton could be mass produce for textile companies, if we did with our bare hands in slavery to produce wealth for other then why the hell isn't being done with technology today for our own survival and progress, I can tell you why its because too many of us are still asleep, malingering, in a state of stupor believing others will always come to save us when we fall deep in trouble, keep running with the democrats and their welfare state of mind, we have not seen ground zero yet.

We have a strange soil issue in Jackson, and other parts of MS, called Yazoo Clay. It expands when wet and contracts when dry, which is the main reason for the potholes and crumbling foundations on houses. My in laws actually had the slab break right in half under their house. Repair companies claim to be able to fix these foundations but I don't think they are usually successful. We left the area, actually Hinds county mostly for this reason but then found out about all the other benefits of NOT living in that county, and I am SO thankful. But I lived there my entire life until just 15 years ago. Jackson was, at one time, a true Southern Gem. Now, anybody who can leave does.

I lived in Jackson for about 9 months or so, back in 1964-1965. I was in 5th grade then. My dad managed the Stonewall Jackson Motor Lodge at the time. Jackson was a very pretty city then. The restaurant was ran by a guy we called Mr. Paul. It was a great place to eat then. At one point I remember all the motel rooms were rented to the federal government. They were filled with federal agents investigating the murder of the three civil rights activists, inspiring the movie "Mississippi Burning". The KKK burned a cross that was visible from the motel windows and shortly after that we moved. This was back before the Interstate highway went through, essentially killing many businesses in that area. My late wife and I went through Jackson a few years back (about 2010-ish) and we visited the motel property. So much had changed. My heart goes out to all the residents of Jackson for what they have been through.

    Long Post:
I’m from Jackson. Born and raised. After watching your video, I felt some type of way. Yes, there are some parts that look like a third world country. And yes, over the years, the city has gone down dramatically. But there are some good parts too. If you’re gonna make a video about Jackson, show the city in it’s entirety. Not just the negative. You could have shown the campus of J.S.U.( Jackson State University), the campus of Tougaloo College, the Civils Rights museum in downtown Jackson, the home of slain civil rights leader - Medgar Evers. Which, by the way, is a National monument. You could have shown Belhaven district, the Fondren district, Woodland Hills area where they have homes valued well over half million dollars. The District of Eastover, where they have really nice restaurants, office spaces and multi million dollar homes. Next time you come to Jackson, I’ll be glad to give you a tour of the city. I can show you some of the beautiful parts of the city. Also, I recommend you stay at the King Edward Motel in downtown Jackson or The Westin in downtown. These are very nice 5 star motels.

My neighbors were night of the living base heads and transgender drug dealers. I was car jacked in brawd daylight as the police was circulating the block. It always looked dusty and gloomy. I was depressed the entire time. In my 4th year I took a ride to Biloxi. I saw Ole Miss, green grass, the sun, flowers. I was in shock. I could not believe I was still in Mississippi. I thought the ENTIRE Mississippi looked and felt like jackson, McComb, Vicksburg, pearl and all the surrounding areas.
Jackson was the murder capital of the world when I lived there. There was a rap song made about the murders and Jackson also had an Aids epidemic at that same time.

Watching this video again today brings back so much nostalgia for me. Funny enough, I do miss Jackson very much despite all the negatives about it. I remember watching King Edward and his Blues Band perform live before my eyes at the Subway Lounge around 1995/1996. Patrice Moncell too (RIP). The Subway Lounge was a an interestingly strange place. Very much a hole in the wall but what I loved about it was that all ages, races and demographics (including late teen college students like me back then!) would be found there. Especially after 2 am. Bucket beer and blues dogs were unforgettable there. So sad it was eventually torn down. The Mississippi State Fair is also world class, without a doubt. Been to many countries and I can definitely vouch for that. I attended it every single year I lived in Jackson (1995-2017). The food is very much missed. I also have fond memories of the DOCK in the late 90s. Was that an awesome party place or what? And who remembers club Catwalk? Wings and pool at Jokers Tavern with friends on certain nights was much fun. So was listening to music in the car late nights during my pizza delivery route around Ridgewood, Old Canton and East Northside Drive while in grad school. I also miss fishing at the Rez and other spots around Jackson, Pearl and beyond. Houses were also dirt cheap so it was possible to buy one in South Jackson cash, live in it for 5 years and then sell it at cost and move on. So sad that in Jackson, iconic places (like the Metrocenter - so many memories there) just disappear forever after some time and never come back. God bless all who are still living there or have lived there at some point during their lifetime.

Malls just about everywhere are in sad shape.
Blame the avarice on suburban cities.
Cities went on a rampant permit issuing/mall-building spree.
This happened because, for a long time, communities went to great efforts to create commercial space.
Retail ventures brought commerce, merchants and entertainment to cities and suburbs.
But when even more suburbs sprang forth, the market became vacant retail space.

Of course there are the usual comments that you only showed the "bad areas" of the city, but maybe most neighborhoods in Jackson are like this and you probably don't want to do an hour long video. You also did show downtown. Fact is Jackson had the highest murder rate of any city over 100K people in the entire country in 2021. Yes, higher than Baltimore, St. Louis, Detroit and other dangerous cities. That should tell you something right there.

Of course there are nice areas of Jackson. There are nice areas of every city. However, when I visit a city I focus on the downtown and the area surrounding downtown. The downtown is the city’s heart and pulse, completely unique and different from any other city.
Does the city encourage people to live in the downtown area, which in turn creates business, including restaurants and stores? A vibrant nightlife? Throngs of people walking on the sidewalks? Are the buildings maintained and inhabited? Jackson, unfortunately, fails in this. The downtown is a wasteland. There are no people living there. Many of the buildings are boarded up and literally collapsing into themselves. The streets are the worst I have ever driven on in the United States. Trash is littered everywhere. I hated to see it.

@@dementedmindstate7063 Both. Most just went to the suburbs when the crime spiked. This man is blaming busing in the 70’s but I grew up in the 80’s and I knew very few people who lived in the suburbs. The “flight” came in the 90’s with gangs, drugs and violence and it wasn’t just white people leaving. You only have to look at these comments to see I’m telling the truth.

Some might find it weird, but just by the landscape itself, Jackson looks beautiful. It has that medium city vibe: not a small town, but also not infested by that typical big city chaos. Some areas could improve for sure, but most of them look decent. The human issue might be the main challenge. In the end, not everywhere needs to be like Los Angeles, Houston, or New York.

Thank you. I was there visiting several years ago. Yes, I saw bad areas but you also have good areas such as artist area, civil rights museum (which is awesome) and I’ve stayed at two hotels (includes BW, which had internet) and I walked around that area and felt safe. Shoneys was closed at that time. Anyway found a really nice outlet mall had many nice stores and movie theater. You could see the southern charm in Jackson. Yes, streets are super raggedy

Financial inequality creates that mismatch. It'll keep happening in every run down majority black city or town.
