If I had to make an analogy, I'd say: EDF: Insect Armageddon is like a decent mid-shelf wine. There's a sense of effort, love and refinement that went into making it what it was. You wouldn't break out the nice glasses and serve it to more refined company, but it tastes good and worth the price. It was classy enough to win second place at the county fare. EDF 2017 is your favorite beer from the little brewery down the street. No one talks about its tone or its aroma. It's not complex enough for that. It wouldn't win any awards, and critics wouldn't pay it two glances. But it makes you happy, and you've had a lot of good times with one in your hand. Critically and technically speaking, the former seems like the clear winner, and yet oddly enough, the latter is where all your best memories are.
I have about 40 hours into IA, and I was in the same boat at the beginning, It just felt really out of place, and never captured the true awesome spectacle of 2017. But I pushed that out of my mind, and I really started getting into it. I could not put the game down. The drive for me was getting the class leveled to the max. Yes, the grinding is a huge pain in the ass. It took about 40 hours to beat all 3 difficulty levels with one class, and maxing out the class. It will always be considered the odd man out next to 2017 and 2025, but it is still one hell of a game. Everyone needs to try it, especially with a co op buddy! Excellent review! You put a lot of effort into each video, and we all appreciate it a lot! Thanks!
Mentioned the reduced number of enemies, but they forgot to mention that weapons are also pretty limited in their effects (to also help prevent slowdown). 2017 had the Governor 100 which shot 100 pellets - each with its own tracer - per shot. In IA, your shotguns can fire at most 12 or so. And there are similar differences throughout.
After watching the review for the EDF-2017, I downloaded that PSP port of EDF-2. The Pale Wing was very nice to use. The JET is the natural progression of the Pale Wing as the Pale Wing was the prototype for it unless I misread on the wiki.
Good review. I absolutely love both games. While they are different in some fundamental ways, they obviously have way more in common than differences. It's always disappointing to hear people bash IA because it's still such a fun game. I hold both IA and 2017 on equal footing.
IA is just okay to me, I thought 2017 was just better because of how mindless it was. The lack of autosave still sucks, but I honestly just don't find IA nearly as fun. Even Steven Blume's amazing performance didn't save it for me. It literally took me only an hour in, to say, "You know what? I wanna go back to 2017, I just remember having more fun with that one."
Probably my favorite reviewer! A lot of reviewers spend so much time talking about the bad stuff, and that's fine, but sometimes I just want to hear about good things, and HVGN's videos emanate pure joy and passion. :)
On the subject of slowdown: it wasn't ever a huge problem for a game to have some slowdown until recently, when 1080p, 60fps became more important than fun gameplay.
***** Well, frame drops and massive slowdown can affect gameplay in a negative light. Dropping between 60 and 40fps is hardly what I'd consider horrible, but mostly anything below 30fps can actually become quite destructive to the game, especially if it's frequently unstable. Imput delays, disorientation and in the most extreme of "Sonic genesis" cases, headaches and nausea are common factors that come together to destroy a game experiense just because you simply cannot follow what's going on.
The insects aren't the aliens, you are forgetting there are robots too. The aliens are flying ships and found a way to create giant bugs and unleash them against us, they also created the robots.
Can't wait for the 2025 review. I loved that game so much. I ported the PS3 version before it came out here and then bought it again on the 360 when it was localized.
I gave this series a try after watching this. Don't regret it. Game is hella basic but thats all there needs to be. Its simple pick up and kill stuff fun. Thanks for bringing this series to my attention.
This game was disappointing compared to 2017, but it was still fun. The worst thing for me was keeping the weapons stuck for certain classes and the fact you'd have to grind out the same levels over and over just to reach the highest level in order to use the best weapons you'd found since the weapons had level requirements. For every one thing that IA got right, it got something else wrong and the only thing that got hurt was the fun factor for each and every one. 2017 got many things wrong and it was still a blast.
Still makes me think "Starship Troopers", but more closer to the book as apposed to the movie. Can't wait for EDF 2025, I wonder how far this cult game will go.
I enjoyed Insect Armageddon but you're right, it doesn't have the same action and sense of scale as the Sandlot developed games. Looking forward to the 2025 review. It took everything I liked from the other games and turned it up to 11.
I have no depth perception, so whenever you throw me into a 3D game like this, I can't properly orient myself, so I find the experience terribly frustrating. I mean, the Metroid Prime games were fine for me, but you had an enormous health bar; a lock-on; gigantic, brightly-colored, slow-moving projectiles; and a greater focus on exploration and puzzle solving than actual combat. That said, the more you talk about these, the more I want to play them; you may make a Shooter fan of me yet! Right now, 2017 seems more suited to me, because you've said that it's easier, but Insect Armageddon is on a system that I actually have; maybe I'll wait for the 2025 review.
The problem of not having enough bugs to shoot was fixed in the PC version, I remember some missions on PC would have so many bugs that I couldn't see the floor.
This was a good video! In my mind I got the idea that Insect Armageddon wasn't a "real" EDF, and hence not worth a look. But it's starting to sound like something I might still enjoy, even if it lacks the over-the-topness of the two EDF games I have played!
i remember wanting to play EDF 2017 back when it first dropped on the xbox 360 shop because it had big ass bugs to kill, and i loved starship troopers,so it was a win/win for me
Insect Armageddon was my first exposure to the Earth Defence Force games. Just recently played Earth Defence Force 5 and boy is EDF 5 a major improvement over this. Insect Armageddon only has 15 levels, while EDF 5 has over 100. This means the levels in Insect Armageddon are super long, and it's easy to die after a half hour of hard work and lose all that progress. EDF 5's levels are much shorter and easier to digest.
This looks like a lot of fun. It almost makes me wish I hadn't stuck with the Wii during generation 7. Almost. I'm glad you're back making videos. Yours are a ton of fun to watch. Happy Halloween.
I still miss the HVGN intro, and the casual commentary-style review feels too slow. I know it's a new approach, but it doesn't work. The last episode (though being a HVGN reboot-ish episode) was great and the usual HVGN style which was great, but this episode just didn't feel like an HVGN episode; it felt like a "Is it really that bad?" episode with HVGN slapped onto it to fit in the trilogy of the Insect Armageddon arc you have planned.
Was this video accidentally uploaded earlier? Because I saw a new video from you today earlier and like I always do, I opened your channel on a new tab to signify you had a video I wanted to watch and I went back through my subscriptions looking for any other videos I wanted to watch before yours. And then when I finally came back to your channel, I didn't see a new video.
Yeah man, this was actually the only title of EDF that I've ever played, and I enjoyed it so, so much, but then when I went out to look at other titles of the franchise I was like "why are these other games like mobile versions of the one I played?" Now I see the differences, might go and play the other ones with different eyes now.
And just to defend one thing about the game, the last weapon for each class (which does like max dmg in a 150 ft radius) is absolutely ridiculous, but maybe there are similar things in the other games as well.
Alas, it was one of those games I wanted for the Xbox 360 (in my 200 or so collection of Xbox 360 games) but in the end I never played nor purchased any iteration of the game. :/ And I doubt I ever will when I am too much into Xbox One now. Thanks for the video. I missed the mythical cup of wine in your HVN videos. :)
Insect Armageddon is my favorite of the EDF games i have played. Played 2017 for a bit at my friend's house, didn't have much fun. Also bought 2025 for the PS3, it's pretty good but i find it too long and just not varied enough to keep me playing. IA is pretty short and also quite repetitive but for some reason i just like it more. Maybe it's because i like the grittier american feel more compared to the japanese monster flick feel of the other ones.
yeah i have to comment on what others have said. im not a fan of this video, given that its called hvgn i went in expecting a proper review not stream chat. i still enjoyed it but this is just open chat even if you had a structure to it its not what were expecting from hvgn.
I hate being the type of guy who can't play EDF because of how realistic the insects look design wise. I fucking hate bugs to the point where i can't play a series of games i know i would enjoy.
Screwy Yeah. It's just the deigns that get to me. It will just take one spider jumping down in front of me to just "NOPE" the game. Don't get me wrong, i'd love nothing more then vaporizing those bugs with the ridiculously overpowered guns in EDF.
Alonzo Tompkins I feel you. At least, I used to. Not about insects in itself, but an assorted array of unpleasantries It wasn't untill my early late teens that I started being able to handle them and a few years later, I was totally ok with it..Some foes in Fianl Fantasy VIII and the skulltullas in Ocarina of Time where my worst enemies. And I think that's what helped me get over this primal fear, I love those games so much that not even the constant fear if random encounter with an Ochu or having a fucking skull-shaped spider bumping into my head out of nowhere would turn me down from them. Who knows, maybe EDF could be your medicine ! :)
Alonzo Tompkins I can understand the disposition. For me, that line was crossed when I visited The Depths in Dark souls. That place struck some nerves with me. Those plague infested rats, waddling knee-deep in water that's most likely crawling with rott and feces, the Basilisks, it was un-comftorable passing through there. In this game, most of the enemies are common bugs that aren't really creepy to me. Ants, wasps and spiders are hardly my kind of squick. Throw in some Flesh flies and maggots and we'd be on the same page.
Alonzo Tompkins Same here. Friends over Xbox live wanted me to pick up the game and I was like "Nope, nope, nope, nope, so much nope." I love B movies and these games are just that. But realistic looking bugs is a big time nope for me.
Reason for that is Insect Armageddon is a spin-off made by a western developer. Sandlot probably has little experience developing for PC, or doesn't think it's a worthwhile endeavor. Hopefully this changes at some point, and the sooner the better.
I do believe the series could be quite popular on PC. What kills the 360, PS3 and Vita versions for me is the frame rate. A well made PC version would remedy this and I also hope the PS4 version will also improve that aspect.
+BoofDOTD He's likely decided to review EDF 4.1 in its place, since they are basically the same game. Only 4.1 runs and looks better, and adds new stuff. Still no Genocide Weapon, though. That's a bummer.
+BoofDOTD; yes, i was waiting for 4.1 to be released in north america. the 2025/4.1 review is in line for january 2016 and i'm hoping to have eric involved in some way.
Starscream I assume rather Derek and Eric's schedules clashed and or he (Derek) or both are waiting for the DLC to fully release and be completed to give it a full, proper review. There were 3 mission-based DLC packs released for 2025 and we just got the second for 4.1. And for free (for 2 weeks). But if anything, I bet it was a scheduling issue that stopped the January review. I'm sure he still has it planned for once Eric's schedule is freed up.
M disapointed, this was kinda dull for me as i never played these and really dont have any intrest to, but usually that doesnt matter due to HVGN episodes being loaded with interesting history about the game and its makers, this felt like any of the streams that he airs sometimes
Less a review than a podcast with video of the games, but still a nice feature. I'm curious on the silence on 2025, but I assume that's for another video... Yeah, I also felt that Insect Armageddon just wasn't as satisfying. Finishing on normal and jumping into hard I found to be really difficult because my weapons frankly *would not do anything* to the enemies. I can understand being "more difficult" but making them damage sponges is another.
I have over 130 hours in 2017, holy fuck thats a good game. I only have like 4 hours in Insect Armageddon.. bought it the day it came out but just didn't do it for me.
*shrug* I found Insect Armageddon superior to 2017 in the only way it mattered - better gameplay. I also don't find complaints of "soul" to be valid. IA has a soul of its own, and in a game not made by Sandlot, that's what I'd want. 2025 (4.1) and 5 are both superior, obviously, but when it comes to a head to head on 2017 and IA, I'm going IA every time.
Insect Armageddon is good, but the replay value (at least for me) is way off.... The campaign is ridiculously repetitive and the progression system drags on at the later character levels... And the ending is just revoltingly bad. I probably spent 15 hours on Insect Armageddon tops. I spent almost 40 hours on EDF2017 Portable, EDF2025 and I'm on my way to spend that amount of time on EDF2: Invaders From Planet Space on Vita, and I plan on working my way up to Inferno with all of those.
All of these framrate issues wouldn't exist on the PC. I just feel like the games will never work out on consoles. Too much has to be sacrificed for performance sake.
I don't think this style suits you Derek. This mostly uncut diologue instead of your fast-paced rambling... I find it lacking. You just discussed the game like you played it on stream or smth.
This actually reminds me more of "Is it Really that Bad?" series. The thing is, he does have a special guest and it's very difficult to separate the discourse in such a way to put it into a typical HVGN. Though I agree partially, the fact that he took the effort to find someone who could give far more precise input allows it to thrive and have a longer, more interesting episode, if not as "fun" as it normally is.
I have to agree. Although I'll take these videos over no HVGN at all or the insane 2 hour long let's plays/is it really that bad. Big fan of your work, Derek. But this episode I hardly felt it was HVGN at all. It felt boring at times and didn't hold a candle to your past episodes where there's a script so you can tell us your ramblings in an orderly fashion. This is just one fan's opinion. Keep up the good work. PS: where's that Snatcher episode? ;)
2017 is good, but you should also try 2025. The newest entry in the series, it combines what was good about 2017 and what was good about Insect Armageddon.
Well, I only played EDF 2025 so I don't have an opinion on it. All I heard in this review was WAA! WAA! WAA! WAA! WAA! Geesh... And Super EDF on SNES still rules! So choke on that. :P
If I had to make an analogy, I'd say:

Another new HVGN? You have no idea how much better you made my day right now.
No it the same video but he fixed an error.
Ok. Oh well I'm still going to enjoy rewatching it later.
After watching the review for the EDF-2017, I downloaded that PSP port of EDF-2. The Pale Wing was very nice to use. The JET is the natural progression of the Pale Wing as the Pale Wing was the prototype for it unless I misread on the wiki.

AlluMan96 Oh, yeah, I get that, but nowadays people bitch if the game can't run a solid 60 at max settings on whatever insane rig they have.
To be fair, if you spend the amount of cash needed for a good gaming computer, you kinda want the best version.
The insects aren't the aliens, you are forgetting there are robots too. The aliens are flying ships and found a way to create giant bugs and unleash them against us, they also created the robots.
2025 is King of the Hill. The best EDF yet.
Great review, Eric is a great and funny reviewer as well and I'd love to see more collaborations between the two of you in the future.
gwg 2019. I knew of the series a long time, people playing in front me liked it, worth resting in my x1.
Can't wait for the 2025 review. I loved that game so much. I ported the PS3 version before it came out here and then bought it again on the 360 when it was localized.
i think 2025 thats the best out of both games making it the best :)
It's getting an updated version on PS4, and hopefully it'll be even better than before.
I love how point Eric was grabbing that bug reference.
I gave this series a try after watching this. Don't regret it. Game is hella basic but thats all there needs to be. Its simple pick up and kill stuff fun. Thanks for bringing this series to my attention.

awesome collab guys! hope to see more from the two of you in the future!
This game is available for PC too if you didn't know. 2017 Is not, unfortunately.
God that dialogue comparison actually made me wince. I hate when people think cheesey dialogue just means stupid dialogue.
this is way more of a podcast about the game and way less of a HVGN video that we would normally be expecting :/
So this year instead of Halloween jokes could we just get bug jokes?
I have no depth perception, so whenever you throw me into a 3D game like this, I can't properly orient myself, so I find the experience terribly frustrating. I mean, the Metroid Prime games were fine for me, but you had an enormous health bar; a lock-on; gigantic, brightly-colored, slow-moving projectiles; and a greater focus on exploration and puzzle solving than actual combat. That said, the more you talk about these, the more I want to play them; you may make a Shooter fan of me yet! The problem of not having enough bugs to shoot was fixed in the PC version, I remember some missions on PC would have so many bugs that I couldn't see the floor.
Keep the happy need videos coming man. These are the best!!
Great video! Nice touch with Goemon music at the end for Mr. Eric "Goemon47" Lappe ;)
I like to imagine that this is just your normal everyday phone conversation with Eric.
Glad you're back dude.
I'm glad you're back :)
Great that you got Eric into the show again!
Glad he fixed that "Dialong"
HVGN IS BACK YES ABOUT TIME
Nicely done video!
PS - WOW, that phone has some serious call clarity!
And i was really looking forward to some HVGN halloween episodes
Awesome review derek! Old fan of HVGN but new fan of Space Money Octagon! Lovin thiiiiiiiss
This was a good video! In my mind I got the idea that Insect Armageddon wasn't a "real" EDF, and hence not worth a look. But it's starting to sound like something I might still enjoy, even if it lacks the over-the-topness of the two EDF games I have played!
new hvgn on my feed makes my day!
i remember wanting to play EDF 2017 back when it first dropped on the xbox 360 shop because it had big ass bugs to kill, and i loved starship troopers,so it was a win/win for me
Insect Armageddon was my first exposure to the Earth Defence Force games. Just recently played Earth Defence Force 5 and boy is EDF 5 a major improvement over this. This means the levels in Insect Armageddon are super long, and it's easy to die after a half hour of hard work and lose all that progress. EDF 5's levels are much shorter and easier to digest.
You should review Future Cop L.A.P.D. for PSX. Kicks ass.
This looks like a lot of fun. It almost makes me wish I hadn't stuck with the Wii during generation 7. Almost.
I'm glad you're back making videos. Yours are a ton of fun to watch. Happy Halloween.
Welcome Back!!!
I have to disagree on calling the class system "Poorly implemented", but then again I do play Killing Floor so
Haha, goemon music for a guest star that goes by goemon online.
Thank you for the video, I'mma go with 2017 (might grab Armageddon some day)
It's seems like it'd be one of those games to benefit being on the Xbox one/ps4.

I'm going to get the Vita version of 2017 based on your recommendation. Thanks Darek.

I believe there was some issues in the last video that is fixed in this one
Great Mystical Ninja 1 Music there at the end I think
Bugs freak me out should I play this?
I got the genocide gun of IA...was super fun and loved it, But man i want more missions
Hey HVGN, how about doing an "is it really that bad" for Ride to Hell: Retribution. I'd love to see that!
There's no time.
Yeah man, this was actually the only title of EDF that I've ever played, and I enjoyed it so, so much, but then when I went out to look at other titles of the franchise I was like "why are these other games like mobile versions of the one I played?"

Hmm. The 1st song in the video sounds like the intro level to Lost Vikings, Genesis version.
Alas, it was one of those games I wanted for the Xbox 360 (in my 200 or so collection of Xbox 360 games) but in the end I never played nor purchased any iteration of the game. :/ And I doubt I ever will when I am too much into Xbox One now. Stop Skeletons ? i didnt know who this was, showing up in my Subscriptions
until i realize this HVGN why the name change ?
*****
but what Skeletons ? the only Skeleton i see is on killer instinct.
It's their stream called "SSFF" or "Stop Skeletons From Fighting".
Why are the evil aliens always insects?
Great end song! Goemon is the best!
yeah i have to comment on what others have said. im not a fan of this video, given that its called hvgn i went in expecting a proper review not stream chat. i still enjoyed it but this is just open chat even if you had a structure to it its not what were expecting from hvgn.
I hate being the type of guy who can't play EDF because of how realistic the insects look design wise.
I fucking hate bugs to the point where i can't play a series of games i know i would enjoy.
Think about it this way. You're literally able to send hundreds of ants sky-high.
It's a power fantasy when you dig beneath the surface
Screwy Yeah. It's just the deigns that get to me. It will just take one spider jumping down in front of me to just "NOPE" the game.

Why is Insect armageddon the only one on pc? With the horsepower, this could potentially be amazing!
and it runs just the same on pc.
EDF is budget Japanese game, so maybe they just couldn't afford to make the port and put in the time.
If it's an insect armageddon, why are there spiders?
Derek, where is Calvin?!
CervantezYoshimitzu if you watched the live streams, you'd see calvin all the time!
I suddenly have the urge to play these games again... But I'm busy with Yakuza: Dead Souls XD
I played both in order and you know what. I like the second one better
where oh where is the 2025 review? :'(
+BoofDOTD He's likely decided to review EDF 4.1 in its place, since they are basically the same game.
Really? Yay! I didn't know that about 4.1. Excited for the video, man! :)
+Stop Skeletons From Fighting Are you still going to review EDF 4.1?
Starscream I assume rather Derek and Eric's schedules clashed and or he (Derek) or both are waiting for the DLC to fully release and be completed to give it a full, proper review. There were 3 mission-based DLC packs released for 2025 and we just got the second for 4.1. And for free (for 2 weeks). But if anything, I bet it was a scheduling issue that stopped the January review. I'm sure he still has it planned for once Eric's schedule is freed up.
Why is it called Insect Armageddon when there are Spiders in it?
Hey Darek! I was wondering if you could do a is it really that bad for the game Operation Darkness
Anyone know the song at the end during the credits? Also, nice to see the HVGN back [:
I'm sure that it's from the first Goemon game on SNES, The Legend of the Mystical Ninja.
Net Spectre Found it, it was Otafu Army in the soundtrack. Thanks!
Spiders aren't insects.
You're welcome.
EDF is da BOMB!! it's so sick, the absolute Money!!
EDF! EDF! Bring on 2025!
Interesting way to look at things.
I have EDF 2017 for PSP and EDF insect armageddon for PS3. Anyone played EDF 2025?
Chronas 9.9 Yep 2025 is the best, EDF 4.1 on the PS4 should hopefully be localized and sent to North America and Europe soon
M disapointed, this was kinda dull for me as i never played these and really dont have any intrest to, but usually that doesnt matter due to HVGN episodes being loaded with interesting history about the game and its makers, this felt like any of the streams that he airs sometimes
Gameplay wise compared too other edf games this on isnt that great but nostalgia atmosphere and sound design wise this one easily takes the cake
I can understand being "more difficult" but making them damage sponges is another.
its just like Japanese Godzilla vs American Godzilla
I wish EDF were on PC...
I have over 130 hours in 2017, holy fuck thats a good game. I only have like 4 hours in Insect Armageddon.. bought it the day it came out but just didn't do it for me.
Awesome!
*shrug*
I found Insect Armageddon superior to 2017 in the only way it mattered - better gameplay. I also don't find complaints of "soul" to be valid. IA has a soul of its own, and in a game not made by Sandlot, that's what I'd want.
2025 (4.1) and 5 are both superior, obviously, but when it comes to a head to head on 2017 and IA, I'm going IA every time.
Less painless?
This game is like an American made Godzilla movie, it might be cool... but it just ain't Toho.
How much was the game
What's the ending music from?
Try The Legend of the Mystical Ninja's OST. Sure sounds like something from it.
I agree. This seemed less like a HVGN episode and more of a SSFF stream. I don't like it.
PS: where's that Snatcher episode? ;)
***** oooh little piggy!
nice one entertaining review
Woo hoo DA!
Never bothered with this series. If I had to pick one out of all of them, I guess it would be 2017?
2017 is good, but you should also try 2025. The newest entry in the series, it combines what was good about 2017 and what was good about Insect Armageddon.
MarsGundam Sounds good. As long as it has as many insects on screen (or close to the same) I'll definitely check it out.
Pick up 2025
007Tubedude yeah, 2025 is definitely the best!
The corpses vanishing is a turn off for me. :(
Well, I only played EDF 2025 so I don't have an opinion on it. All I heard in this review was WAA! WAA! WAA! WAA! WAA! Geesh...
And Super EDF on SNES still rules! So choke on that. :P
I miss dialong :(
Brandon Sylver so long, dialong!
Joy!
