I had a brake light problem with the driver's side brake light being much dimmer than the right, causing the bulb on the passenger side to burn out quite often, and get too hot for the plastic casing that warps which prevents you from removing the light bulb in the socket opening. Some references have called for a fire hazard with the extreme heat of the bulb. The "cause" was quite obvious when I saw the inside of the socket. The ground tab, thin copper strip that touches the outside of the bulb casing was pushed back into the socket housing. I simply used a technical screw driver and bent the tab back out into a position of contact to the base of the bulb. PROBLEM SOLVED! Yea!!! Thanks for the video and post that encouraged me to move forward in fixing it myself. I saved over $800.00 in investigative problem solving at the Hyundai Dealership & the auto electric shop down the road. Thanks again guys!
I've seen this video months ago...I logged back on UA-cam just to watch your video again.. I'm so tired of replacing those bulbs, or the front end work is ridiculous... I've never went through 2 sets of struts that only last about one year.. The mounts keep going bad and also I have a harness that will get replaced but I will definitely buy the 1157 bulb and see how long those bulbs will last... Your video is very helpful and Thanks 😊!!!!!!!
@De De many people have shared that they have been able to simply swap out your bulbs with led light bulbs without doing a conversion. Hope this helps 👍
I never had any other problems with my other cars I had. I just bought a 2012 Sonata both my brake light bulbs burned out completely black. I'm going to take it back to the dealership so they can change it out. I can't drive the car like that. Hopefully that 1157s works
@@AndreaDaigle125 it's not hard at all order the bulbs and just replace em. If your connector is fried then you will just buy a new and unplug thr old one and replace with thr new one it's very simple
Just when I think the Internet is a colossal waste of time and I wish it had never been invented, a video like this comes along and solves a problem for me. Thanks!! 2011 Sonata, same bulb-blowing issue, and the 1157s seem to be working fine.
Thank you so much for posting this video my Hyundai sonata is constantly burning my brake lights. I'm a woman that knows nothing about car issues and I thank you for the detailed on how to fix this myself again thank you so much.
@carmenporras4640 Your very welcome, and thank you for your kind feedback. Now that led lights have advanced you should be able to purchase led style bulbs and install them without any modifications needed. Let me know if you need help locating them and I’d be happy to share an Amazon link with you.
Glad I found this video. My 2012 Sonata has the same issue. I can tell the 2357s are running too hot. Plastic shows melting spots around the plug. Very irritating. Going to put the 1157s in and see how long they will last. Good tip on the dielectric grease. Thanks for the video.
@@michaeldre2447 Bulbs should not burn out every six months. I can't remember the last time I replaced a brake light in my Honda, but my Hyundai is out every six months or less. They're not just burning out, they're melting the bulb and the casing around it.
Michael Dre it’s clearly an issue. In the past 18 months I’ve changed each headlight bulb twice the left tail light burned out and melted the plastic. Now the right tail light is out to now. That a total of 6 new bulbs in 18 months, that’s not normal.
@@BigBad1989 my casing melted and now i cant even get the bulb out. How did you guys get that fixed or would you recommend anything? At this point im about to break the casing
TTTHHHAAANNNKKK YYYOOOUUUUUUUU!!! Worked on our Hyundai Tucson with one pesky brake light burning out over & over - funny, I'm 62, and 1157's have been around as long as I can remember - in our case it (the 1157) doesn't seem to be any brighter than the 2357 ... shrug ... Anyway thanks for "permission" to fix what the engineers designed!
OK so just to give everybody an update I changed both of the brake light bulbs to the 2357 LED light bulbs by Philips 1 week ago. I decided to go with the 2357 instead of the 1157 only because they are brighter as they have a little bit more wattage output and went with Philips because that is all that Pep Boys carried. Also no load equilizer/ inline capacitor is needed. So far so good. I will post another update in 6 to 8 weeks. Love the fact that I found this video, you have no idea how many people will benefit from seeing it, just like I did! Way to go TweekerDan1984 👍✌
How is it holding up and has anyone only had an issue with just on of the main brake lights my passenger side tail goes out twice a week if I replace the light that much
@Andrew Hall when this issue initially started it started with just one of the lights going out at a time. Eventually both of the brake lights went out. I would imagine if just one bulb is going out over and over there may actually be a corroded connection inside the light socket. You may be able to clean it but I would recommend removing the fuse before attempting to clean it.
There is a lot of garbage on UA-cam full of ads and other nonsense, this video is not that. It is super clear, descriptive, and informative. While I have a different model (2018 Tuscson) I am having this precise issue and was getting the run around everywhere I went about it. I appreciate you taking the time to make this video because it's such a pain. Had both tail lights go out while driving .. fortunately the bulbs aren't actually blowing yet but I have to stop and bang on them to get them to come back on. I will be looking to pull those connection bits up and use the lower heat bulbs thanks to your suggestion.
Had this issue with our daughter's 2018 Sante Fe. Changed the bulb and it keeps dying. Just told her to have her husband to replace the bulbs. Thank you.
Most vehicles now accept led replacement bulbs without the need to make any additional modifications. Just simply replace your existing bulb with a led bulb. Hope this helps 🤞🏼
Thank you for sharing, I happen to own a '14 Sonata, totally agree, Hyundai should addresses these issues with burning tail lights as well headlights, defectly will replace my with 1157, I already replaced my headlights with LED no more burning out... have a blessed day 👍
Whew!! I'm so glad I found you and your video because my tail light keeps going out not all the time but every so often it gets on my nerves having to buy tail lights bulbs. 😫😫🤦🏾♀️ thanks! I have a 2011 Sonata.
Wow I have the same issue with the brake lights going out every other month it seems. I thought it was just my car. The left side melted the casing and I couldn’t even get the bulb out, I had to have a mechanic file it down in order to be able to replace the bulb on that side. Never had this issue with any other car. This will be my last Hyundai. Way too many issues from my engine going out, to the brake lights, to the starter, to the axle having to be replaced twice.
My engine went out, too. Then they put a referb engine in there and that cut out on me on the expressway. Luckily it was at night and not during rush hour. My brother's caught on fire. He came outside one morning and it was in flames. There's currently a class action lawsuit going on because of all the issues these cars have
I just had to file the casing to get bulb out and in and negative wire broke twisting socket back into place. Seems bulbs go out every year or every other year. Most bulbs purchased for any car I ever owned was for this car.
Hello..great video and very helpful..im having the same problem..going to replace fixture. Just one question..there is a plastic clip right beside the bulb..i think its the power to the light...if i just disconnect that clip i can go ahead and splic the cable correct? I just dont want to have to disconnect the battery
This video is still super helpful! I have a 2011 with an inconsistent brake light, I think I just need to adjust the green connector as you showed. Thanks for helping a neighbor! JL
Thanks for helping folks out! You rock! I have a sonata 2018 and it’s driver side brake light doesn’t lighten up. Dealership quoted me something close to $250. Is there a led bulb I can buy by myself and replace the bulb. I don’t know anything about cars.
Yes I have a few listed in the description through Amazon. Although if you can’t find what you are looking for there I’ll send you a link if you would like 👍🏼
Thanks for the video. Same issue here with my 2012 Hyundai Sonata. I have friends telling me my brake lights are out all the time. Now I just always have extras with me. It gets so hot that it eventually melts the plastic around it.
Omg😫😫😫im sooo happy i found your video!!!! I have a 2013 Hyundai elantra and i have bought two entire new tail lights! And have changed my bulbs soo many times!!! Im.using 2357bulbs now!!! Thank you for this video!!!!
The video recommends that you use 1157 *INSTEAD* of the 2357 bulbs! I'm constantly changing my bulbs out, and it's driving me nuts. After owning the car for a few years, I find that I'm replacing the brake lights about every 4-5 months. It's ridiculous. Kudos to the suggestion about prying the contacts to create a tighter fit... as I think part of the problem is the socket is arc'ing - making the bulb burn out faster. One time my left bulb was seized to the socket housing (I could NOT unscrew it to remove it no matter how much downward pressure I applied). After watching this video, I now believe the bulb may have "welded" to the socket due to heat. Not good. I'm immediately going to replace these bulbs to the 1157 in hopes the cooler temperature will be a great help. I will also pry the metal tabs a bit (to make a tighter fit for better connection) and use the bulb grease. HOPEFULLY I will no longer have to purchase another brake light again. Oh - and I also just recently replaced my front right headlamp bulb too. I will never purchase a Hyundai again!!
Hoping that works for you. I have a 2016 Elantra and sometimes the bulb lasts for a while but the last time I put one in it burned out immediately. Frustrating so I’m gonna try the 1157 and then if not that then I know I have to do the new socket but I don’t know how to splice
My brake lights. I googles and gound out tgat there is a recall on something like the brake pad thingy under the dash. I am going to dealer tomorrow to get it repaired for free. Thank you so much for your help.
@Martin Moffitt the main differences are that the replacement bulb does not burn as hot which would also mean it would not be as bright. Although when I changed the bulbs I could not tell the difference between the brightness. Also many people have shared that by simply replacing the the factory bulb with a led (without any conversion) has worked perfectly.
Found this video looking to fix my issues and found this is the exact make and model so I’m glad to know it’s not just my Hyundai Sonata, funny that this issue is a common thing with them
This video was very helpful. I'm hoping you can help with another tail light issue. when you turn on my park lights the brake light comes on too only on the driver side when you press the brake the brake light goes off and the park light stays on by itself. Any ideas?
@@TweekerDan1984 Which wires did you put the equalizer on? My 2014 Sonata has black, green and red wires going to the break light sockets. The green is the ground so the equalizer will go on that, but the other side of the equalizer will go on the red or black wire?
@Cam Galloway yes, there is one tab on either side and then there are two tabs on the very bottom with the power off. You want to pry these out by getting something underneath the middle of these tabs to make them stick out again that way the light can make contact with these contact points. One thing a lot of people have shared is that they are now able to just install LED bulbs with out, needing to do any modifications. So I would install LED bulbs 👍 I hope this helps! Cheers.
@Cam Galloway yes at the time I recorded this video the conversion were required but now led bulbs have been made to work without needing the conversion.
mine go out every 6 months. I just replaced the left rear bulb a month ago and it went out again. I went to replace and noticed the green wire is loose. Is this a simple fix or do i have to take to a mechanic to replace the entire harness?
I shared some of the parts you would need to replace the harness in the description, the harness is some thing you can purchase at your local Parts store or online.
So after posting this video a while ago how did the 1157’s hold up?? Cause I have a ‘14 sonata and and the 2357 just keep blowing out on me and constantly replacing them is getting annoying
My brake light bulbs get so hot. In my 2013 sonata, it actually melted the taillight itself. I replaced bulbs about every 2 months. And every time I go to the store that's what they give me the 2357. now watching this video. I'm definitely going to try the 1157. I've never had a car to blow out so many bulbs. Brake lights headlights, fog lights. It's ridiculous. Thank you for the video.
I have a 2011 Hyundai Sonata 2.0T. I replaced the bulbs to LED bulbs a long time ago because I saw the assemblies were melted and the light bulb ruined the harness by expanding the plastic. The LEDs work really well and dont seem to have any issues. I didnt add anything to the lights with the LEDs as stated in the video and I havent had a problem for about 2 years with the bulbs. 2 weeks ago I bought both rear tail light assemblies for about $120 for both off of Amazon. One didnt seat completely and I was pulled over last night for my drivers side running light (tail light) being out. The brake light works but the running light doesnt. I just purchased another tail light assembly for the driver side from autozone for about $150 because I really dont want to get pulled over again for fear of a ticket, but Im pretty sure you could get them for cheaper online. My front headlight just went out and I dont know if it has anything to do with the new instillation of the tail light assemblies because I dont have an electrical background. I hope this new assembly works and the headlight going out was just a coincidence. I will keep everyone posted. If you just have a light bulb issue please dont be afraid to replace it. It requires no tools and just a little twisting as stated in the video. If you want to replace the assemblies yourself it is not that much more difficult. You will have to back out 5 nuts and it slides right out. The harness comes with a plug, so if you can plug in a light you can do this. The light has one guide on the front of the assembly that keeps it snug to the car. Their is a video that explains everything if you search if you are still afraid. Other issues I have had- -Turbo=waistgate actuator needed to be replaced after the car lost power. -allignment never is correct and pulls to the right. The front suspension is under warranty for 120K for this issue so maybe that will help. I havent had that done yet. -CV joints were replaced -The hydrolic hood stands needed to be replaced. -Almost all of the recalls except for the engine replacement. The power train warranty has been extended to 120k miles -The a/c compressor needed to be replaced. - The paint has a bunch of chips on it. Solution: about $2500 in issues that werent covered under the warranty and a whole lot of time diagnosing and dealing with this car. If you have the extra $7k go ahead and get a Nissan, Toyota or Honda and save yourself the headache. If you dont have the extra money, although this car has been a pain in the butt, I am still ahead $7k but my time isnt unfortunately worth that much. Good luck to everyone! I hope this helped. Please give me some feedback into some of the solutions or issues im having so others can benefit.
I have a 2013 Sonata with the same problem. My fix was to purchase a wiring harness from Rock Auto 6.95 per and they came with all the bulbs attached, Very easy to swap out.
Video super helpful. Lots of bulb replacement in my 2013 Hyundai Elantra. In fact I was pulled over last year (first time in 15yrs😵) and given a warning so switching to LED now.
Have a 2013 Elantra here too. Trying 1157 for now, but may switch to LED too. The brake filament blows so quickly on these pieces of junk. Nowhere near 400 hours and the socket is cooked.
@@SaltySparrow this one's at about 180,000 so I've gotten my $$ worth but it is starting to have numerous small annoying issues not related to the engine. When the ridiculous inflated prices lower will be getting a low mile Subaru Crosstrek
@@charleshines6155 Radio stops working, you have to disconnect the fuse for a few seconds then put it back in, that's how mine worked again, my left rear passenger door doesn't lock automatically so I have to reach back there and lock it manually. I've had to replace the left front turn signal and headlight bulbs. Overall the only problems I've ever had with my 2012 sonata have been electrical. No mechanical issues at all and it is at 131,400 miles.
I have a 14 sonata and I couldnt be happier. Brake light problem was obvious after a few months. I've done oil and service myself and (knock on wood) I've done 80k problem free miles. Worst part about owning it is the people that scoff at (Hyundai). Not realizing Hyundai has been making the most reliable machines on earth for decades. Ships, excavators... etc.
@@JamesSmith-il9zp I just got done putting in a new harness for the right side brake light because the bulb melted into the old socket, which is the reason I couldn't simply just change it like normal. Apparently the bulbs in these sonatas get really hot and either burn out or melt. I've heard the solution was to use a different bulb than the normal one, I forgot what it is though but there's still video on here of it somewhere. My car is shocking. I don't believe anyone has ever worked on it a day in it's life other than oil changes and such. I've only had it for two years and I guarantee I've done more for it than anyone has in it's lifetime. It's s 2012. For example, when I replaced the air filter I was shocked that it was the original one from the factory! It had the date November 15, 2011 which is when it was built, but it's still s 2012 model. I couldn't believe it went almost 100k miles with the factory air filter, so I thought to myself, what else on this car hasn't been changed from the factory? Turns out pretty much everything lol. It's really amazing to me though that pretty much everything was from the factory and had never been touched, but yet the car ran and drove perfectly. And still does by the way. 134,000 miles almost.
Thanks a lot for the video. I sadly came across this video since I had trouble getting the socket back into the slot!!! After watching this it helped me. I actually had the outside light wires getting in the way but your video did show me the orientation of the tabs.
I just accidentally found this video. I've been having this issue for years. My bulb is burned into the little housing thing. Would the dealership fix that piece?
I am having same issue with my 2013 elantra. 5 bulbs replaced again today, stopped by police 3 times in a year . nothing is ever wrong per dealership. Lol what a joke! Working on about my 20th bulb! Thanks for your input ! May try the other bulbs next time which will be soon! Lol
suggestion: I use a clean paper towel to hold the lightbulb when installing. keeping oils and grease off the glass that might cause a bulb to fail in the future.
My passenger side break lights is gone. The turning signal works though. AutoZone said replace the whole back LED light. I have over 60k mileage on my Hyundai Sontata Limited. What should I do??
It is hard to know for sure without seeing the issue, I would stop by a local automotive shop and get a second opinion. Sometimes parts specialists are not as knowledgeable as a certified mechanic. I would guess that there is damage to the tail light housing (possibly melted) so they may be suggesting that the entire housing needs to be replaced. It may be repairable. If you place a new bulb in brake light pig tail does the light still function?
Will the socket being bad cause the third brake light to stay constantly lite I had a driver side bulb burn out and when installed new bulb it will not light up and the 3rd eye stays on
@Beemash When I created this video, they did not offer LED bulbs that did not require modifications, now you can simply swap the bulbs and you should be good to go. Here’s are two links for led and non led bulbs that I would use, these are (LED) www.amazon.com/dp/B08FQL7NCJ/?tag=tweekerdan198-20 (Non LED) www.amazon.com/dp/B001JT5HNG/?tag=tweekerdan198-20
My 2011 sonata bulbs always go out. And now the light bulb always comes loose. Any tips on how to fix that crap?! Bulb is fine but gets loose enough to not work.
I have a 2012 Sonata GLS and had tom replace both brake lights. I had to buy harnesses both times because the bulb burned into the assembly. Wish I'd have seen this.
Hello I have a 2014 Hyundai Sonata I replaced my driver side tail light. The standing lights work fine, however the lights don’t show when I press on the breaks itself. The 3rd light on top of the trunk is the only light that works when I press on the breaks. Do you know what I can do to fix this problem?
Sounds like it may just be a bad connection, the rear brake light wiring works in line with on another so if a connection isn’t sufficient enough both would not light up.
I've had the same problem and will try the 1157 bulb. The hole in the tail light assembly has actually melted somewhat and I could not get the socket to screw back in. I had to trim the warped/melted plastic in order to get the socket with the lightbulb to screw back in.
This video helped so much. I have been having brake light problems and the last one burnt the socket completely. I'm now using the 1157 as you stated and no more issues. I have a 2011 Hyundai Sonata. Now, if someone could just fix my air conditioning problems I will be happy.
I discovered the brake light on the drivers side out. Purchased the 2357. When twisting to remove, only the bulb came out and not thecsilvet casing. Now I can see it's totally burned! How much is this gonna cost me?! Found that the whole
Hi there. I haven't been able to find the same socket to replace it. Is there a number or code for it, so I can buy a new one? Anybody?? I need help finding just the gray socket> . Thanks for your help!!!!!!!!!!
Angel Vargas you have to buy the entire harness and do a cut and splice. I’ve replaced the harness and swapped to 1157 bulbs on about 15 sonatas so far
Maybe if all of us Hyundai owners with this issue would all contact the NTSB they would force a recall. Anything is better than shelling out 400 dollars a year in taillight bulbs and occasional headlamps. This is beyond ridiculous. I could've offset the cost of a Toyota or Honda based on this crap. 3 years of payments and 3 years of "maintenance" that no person outside of the original model T would have expected. Thank you OP
Charles Hines lmfao won’t happen learn to stop using bs bulbs that aren’t meant for the car, every bulb has a certain spec like watts just buy the updated tail light assembly and stop complaining
Which wires did you put the equalizer on? My 2014 Sonata has black, green and red wires going to the left and right break lights. The green is the ground so the equalizer will go on that, but the other side of the equalizer will go on the red or black wire?
Many people have shared that no equalizer is required when using LED bulbs.I’m unsure of which wire the equalizer goes to. When I created this video the equalizer was recommended but now it is no seems that it is no longer necessary. In this video I didn’t switch to LEDs I only used a bulb that was less hot.
I thought something was going on seems like I'm constantly replacing my bulbs so that weeki put in the long life bulbs and before the weekend the damn thing burnt out again I think I'll try the 1157
I'm definitely trying the 1157 model bulbs, thanks..Also, make sure to stay on top of recalls. There's one involving the brake pedal stopper...I had it replaced on my 2011 Sonata. Hyundai had an issue with brake pedal stoppers not working properly causing brake lights to stay lit even though brakes were not applied, resulting in bulbs burning out faster, among other things.
I switched to 2357 leds because the stock bulbs started melting the lens assembly, to the point where I no longer can twist lock the socket in. Nothing a bit of tape can't fix
I bought a replacement wiring for the taillight due to the receptacle melting/breaking also bulb constantly burning out and changed bulb to LED hopefully this resolves the issue !!!!!
So I just wanted to add for anybody with this problem on the 2013 Hyundai Sonata. You actually DON'T need the line load stabilizer for LED's. I just swapped out yet another burned out 2357 for a Sylvania Cool White 1157 LED and it worked like a charm.
That is great! Thank you for sharing, I only suggested the line load stabilizer per manufacturer instructions. I’ve ran into a few cases where just swapping a light out for a LED has caused malfunctioning or dash lights to appear.
Same thing happens to my car on the passenger side but I noticed is not even the bulb sometimes I feel like is the actual bulb holder but who knows, also my front driver side light when out replaced the bulb and still isn’t on. Feel like is a electrical problem
They offer replacement harnesses for the bulbs that are inexpensive. It is likely the the harness has become to hot and was damaged causing poor and incorrect connections.
TweekerDan1984 Im having the same problem! I just left the dealership and they want me to pay $300 for 1 Tail light assembly because they said it’s burnt out but from watching your video I just need to buy a new socket and a different style of bulb?
I had to look this up because I thought I was the only one with this issue. My driver’s side tail light burns out in a month. The plastic has almost broken all the way and gets super hot. Scary! I was wondering if I can get different bulbs maybe for different voltage etc. or with fans to cool them down. I haven’t seen a recall for this.
Yes, I believe you could do this on the Santa Fe, if you do not have any damaged or melted wires, you may be able to just replace your existing bulbs with LED bulbs so that they do not get so hot.
@@TweekerDan1984im going to try it now. I had a sonata last year and had to change the bulbs every other week and I found this video and it worked. So hopefully it’s the same for the Santa Fe
my tail lights out but when i step on my brakes it turns on. I think the bulb isnt making contact with the metal at the bottom cause every time i push the bulb in it lights up. I got pulled over for it already and idk if i should get a new socket
If you have no power at the socket you can use a pick or a pair of tweezers to slightly pull the metal tabs out. I have been able to correct the issue on a friends car by doing this.
My tail light is not working when I turn it on the signal light works and the brake light works but no the light itself neither does the front. I found cut wire in the front but I'm not sure where it plugs in can you maybe help?
@UneXplained Logic It sounds like you’re running lights have a damaged wire causing them not to function at all. Do you by chance see another cut wire that is the same color to which you could attach the cut wire to?
@Lacey according to Amazon these will do the trick for your 2018 Elantra Replacement harness Pigtails Wiring Harness For Turn Signal www.amazon.com/dp/B07CT498Q9/?tag=TweekerDan198-20
Again, thank you. Hyundai makes great cars but the little things seem to be getting lost over the years. I actually have to change all my tail lights every 3-6 months and my head lights about every 6-9 months. Definitely tired of doing this.
@@lacey7632 going with LED bulbs will save you from the frustration. Many people have made the transition without needing to make any wiring modifications.
So O'Reillys just got me to buy the led, but when I put in the driver led light the driver brake light doesn't work, if I swap it back to halogen everything is fine. The led on the passenger side has no issue
Idk if my car is having the same problem but I'm trying to fix it myself and I really don't know where to start. My problem is that my brake lights will only work if my headlights are off, if they are on the brake lights won't work. If I replace the bulbs it will work as intended for a few months. I've looked online and some people say it might be a short issue where the headlights are drawing power from the brake lights when the headlights are on. Thanks for reading.
@@TweekerDan1984 thanks for taking the time out to answer my question. I did check the socket, the wires were bundled and wrapped in electrical tape, didn't look like there were any damage to them. I was thinking about getting those transmitter receiver thing to pinpoint exactly where the short is.
@Tommylai here is a link for the tool. www.amazon.com/dp/B07VYN98QV/?tag=tweekerdan198-20 I receive a small commission by sending you the link but the price is the lowest available on Amazon. This tool may also be available at your local hardware store.
@tommylai I have only used this tool for in home wiring and it works great, be sure the vehicle circuit has no power before trying to use the tracer otherwise the tracer will become damaged.
same issue, brake lights work when headlights are off, but when i turn them on, the tail lights light up but you cant see the brake lights come on almost like they are on constantly. the window brake light works. did you ever figure this out?
Changed out the old burned factory socket harnesses out in two 2013 sonatas and replaced bulbs with LED units (no load equalizer needed) . No problems one year later.
Thank you for sharing, when I created this videos they recommended the load equalizer but with how far and fast technology has changed it seems like maybe the equalizer was a sham. We have come across a few vehicles that required the equalizer or the dash instrument panel would register lights being out when using LED bulbs.
@@TweekerDan1984 No I think you're right, some of the older LED lights did need a Load Equalizer. The one I used was newer and loaded the system enough so it didn't require it :-)
just spent 180$ to get 2 new sockets and 2 new head lamps because this issue happened to me, almost worst case scenario. gonna try those 1157's and hope that fixes everything
Thank You!!! Same problem on 2011 gls. Socket looked identical. 2357 replacement bulbs on driver side only lasted about 12 months and burnt out again. 2nd blown replacement bulb. Replaced with new Sylvania 1157 bulbs - from Walmart $1.50 cheaper than autozone. 👍
Is splitting the wire for new socket hard ? Dealer told me $640 to replace both brake light assemblies bc the sockets are burned out and bulb can’t be removed bc it will break
It would be quite easy to do the repair, you can go to the part store and order new sockets and they come with about 10” of replacement wire for each connection. They probably have what you need in stock and the price of the sockets, wire connectors, tape/heat shrink and new bulbs should run under $50. You will want a wire splicing and crimping tool as well. Please feel free to message me if you would like any additional help.
I just worked on a 2018 Tucson. I found that metal ground tab sometimes not making contact. The metal tabs on the bulb I think has melted the socket so the bulb doesn't stay down as far as it should and thus losing the ground. I reshaped the ground so it would contact the bulb more towards the center than at the bottom. Worse case if my repair doesn't last the socket will need to be replaced.
Technically they are not, but it is very hard to see a difference. I would recommend going with a brighter LED bulb if you have any concerns about brightness. Also people have shared that just using a led bulb with out any electrical modifications has been working great.
Installed new bulbs in tail lights. I was having an issue where when i turned on the daytime running lights or headlights the brake/stop light wasnt illumanitng. figured it out! you have to make sure the double filament bulb is correctly installed, flip the bulb over in the socket, the little metal contacts on the bulb need to be linked to the appropriate prong in the socket. if they are installed backwards, the stop light filament will light up bright at all times and you wont have stop lights when the headlights or day time running lights are turned on cause its on the tail light(dimmer than the stop light) prong in the socket. i think most people are installing the bulbs backwards, and the brake/stop light filament is always being lit up cause the bulb is backwards, causing them to overheat!
thats also why some people are having one working and the other not. hence why one side lights up and one is constantly on, you will notice how much brighter the other was is than the other. its because it was installed backwards
So I have the 1157 bulbs in now but they only turn on when I brake. When idle 1 side doesn't turn on. but when I brake, they both work fine. I spent $257 for them to say they checked wiring and "replaced" the bulbs after I told them changing the bulbs doesn't last, something else is wrong.
My 2011 Hyundai Sonata the driver side tail light harness caught fire and caught all the material thank God I carry a fire extinguisher with me I was able to extinguish the fire I had my 3 kids and wife in the car I got the car put out before the fire department arrived only lasting damage after replacing the tail light and all the trunk carpeting is a small spot where the paint bubbled on the outside
@@thol7762 I haven't, yet. For some reason, it's hard to find the replacement light housings. I replaced the bulbs with the ones described in the video about a month ago and, so far, they're not running hot or burning out. I just electric taped them into the housing, for now.
MrShabindigo I found a full assembly but it’s not factory idk how it would last but it’s new and comes with harness and taillight. www.carparts.com/details/Hyundai/Sonata/Replacement/Tail_Light/2013/REPH730176.html?TID=gglpla&origin=pla&gclid=CjwKCAjwnef6BRAgEiwAgv8mQUgklWn6LBBo90U-LDz6cXH4Tw2sL06MwdU1v3OtX5ydDPwgMHIchRoChekQAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds
The manufacturer of the led bulb recommends the load equalizer so I was only following their recommendation, but many people have shared that the bulbs function just fine without installing the equalizer.
My kia rio left brake lights keeps burning out after 2k miles. Always burns the 2nd fuse inside the bulb. Thankfully, Ace hardware sells them for 2 bucks a pop. About to just replace the socket, starting to piss me off.
You do not need load equalizers for LED’s that are not on the turn signals. For instance the 1157 style here. Also, look into the Long life (LL) Bulbs of the 1157 or 2357. Remember, 2357 is brighter brake light, thus doesn’t last as long. Just FYI...
Thank you for the additional information. In my experience If your vehicle is equipped with a in dash warning light for when your lights burn out you will need a load equalizer otherwise the pesky dash warning light aluminates. I felt that I was clear in stating that the 2357 was a brighter/ higher wattage bulb but thank you for clarifying. I did notice that on the 2017-18 models these lights are now strips of led bulbs.
I'm thinking about using the LED bulbs, but was not looking to mess around with trying to put the load equalizer. Honestly just trying to avoid the hassle. My '11 Sonata tail lights only turn on for braking and the running lights. You think it'll fly without the load equilizer?
My driver side brake bulb keeps going out whenever a cop or mechanic looks at it. They always tell me it's out and i show them the package in the glovebox, to show them I recently replaced it. I figured it was an issue with the wiring itself
My inlaws gave my son a 2012 Sonata fir his first car. We have replaced the bulbs on both sides twice now and they have been the 1157. Guess it is time to try the LED
And you saved me 800 clams, RNS!
Glad I found this by accident. My sonata blows bulbs more than any car I've ever owned. Same with the headlights!
I never had any other problems with my other cars I had. I just bought a 2012 Sonata both my brake light bulbs burned out completely black. I'm going to take it back to the dealership so they can change it out. I can't drive the car like that. Hopefully that 1157s works

Just picked some up so hopefully they work.
Had the same problem on my 2012 Sonata. Thanks for your 1157 bulb recommendation!
Did changing to 1157 help?
Glad I found this video. My 2012 Sonata has the same issue. I can tell the 2357s are running too hot. Plastic shows melting spots around the plug. Very irritating. Going to put the 1157s in and see how long they will last. Good tip on the dielectric grease. Thanks for the video.
Hopefully if enough Owners report this issue to the NHTSA a recall will be implemented
Brittany Keys never will happen, bulbs burn out it’s you’re responsibility to check them and replace them as needed
@@michaeldre2447 Bulbs should not burn out every six months. I can't remember the last time I replaced a brake light in my Honda, but my Hyundai is out every six months or less. They're not just burning out, they're melting the bulb and the casing around it.
BuckeyeTiffany then buy the updated tail light unit Hyundai made to correct the issue

Thank you so much for sharing your update. 👍
How is it holding up
Any new update?!
Use OEM bulbs when you can.
Same. 2016 Sonata. Trying the 1157 replacements. I'll try to remember to come back and report. Thanks for your insight.

We are having the same issue. Over the past 6 months we had to replace the taillight bulb 3 times. I will be buying some 1157 bulbs.
@Yvonne Smith-Wheeler [Real Property Management] same here
Wow I have the same issue with the brake lights going out every other month it seems.
They’re honestly really good it’s just electrical issues on it tbh

B. I q
Love your intro. Does this pertain to a 2017 elantra as well?
@williamhowell2088 thank you, I have made significant changes to shorten the intro. This would also apply to the Hyundai Elantras.
@TweekerDan1984 thank you brother, you and yours have a blessed year.
My brake lights. I googles and gound out tgat there is a recall on something like the brake pad thingy under the dash. I am going to dealer tomorrow to get it repaired for free. Thank you so much for your help.
Thank you sir I wish I found your video two years ago
Yes same! Only been 4 months but yes great video
2016 Hyundai the socket is a different color from how much it’s burned up
what is the actual difference(specifications?) between the two bulbs??
@Martin Moffitt the main differences are that the replacement bulb does not burn as hot which would also mean it would not be as bright. Although when I changed the bulbs I could not tell the difference between the brightness. Also many people have shared that by simply replacing the the factory bulb with a led (without any conversion) has worked perfectly.
Thank you!! Mine just went out... again, I'll get an 1157 tomorrow! Any videos on unclogging panoramic sunroof drain?
Unfortunately I don’t own the car but if they have an issue with the drain and ask for help I’ll be sure to create a video.
Do you have the links or product names of the bulbs and socket replacements you used?
Thank you so much for this post. I changed to the 1157 bulbs but now the right light bulb is not working properly. Please help.
Any ideas?
When you press the pedal do both brake likes and the third eye brake light work properly?
Can you plug those LED bulbs into a regular factory back light? Or do you need to replace the whole light unit to use these LED bulbs?
Yes you can plug the LED to the factory outlet without any issues.
@@TweekerDan1984 Which wires did you put the equalizer on? My 2014 Sonata has black, green and red wires going to the break light sockets. The green is the ground so the equalizer will go on that, but the other side of the equalizer will go on the red or black wire?
@@BigBad1989 We did not switch to LEDs we just use a lower Howard bulb so we did not have to install an equalizer.
I’m not following when you refer to the “tabs” that are sticking up. Are you referring to those two metal pieces at the bottom?
@Cam Galloway yes, there is one tab on either side and then there are two tabs on the very bottom with the power off. You want to pry these out by getting something underneath the middle of these tabs to make them stick out again that way the light can make contact with these contact points. One thing a lot of people have shared is that they are now able to just install LED bulbs with out, needing to do any modifications. So I would install LED bulbs 👍 I hope this helps! Cheers.
@@TweekerDan1984 Didn’t you say there was something else I’d to get in order to put in led’s?
@Cam Galloway yes at the time I recorded this video the conversion were required but now led bulbs have been made to work without needing the conversion.
mine go out every 6 months. I just replaced the left rear bulb a month ago and it went out again. I went to replace and noticed the green wire is loose. Is this a simple fix or do i have to take to a mechanic to replace the entire harness?
It would be a simple fix and the harness alone can be purchased.
Jordan, there has no longer been any issues. The bulbs have not blown since these changes were made.
Sweet, I’m gonna have to try that out then. Thank you for you for making this video and finding a soulution for the problem
I was literally gonna ask this same question. I'm going to buy these 1157 bulbs. Since it's been a year with no problem.
Another option is to use newer LED bulbs, which no longer require any additional wiring. I shared some of the bulbs down in the description below.
Other issues I have had-
-Turbo=waistgate actuator needed to be replaced after the car lost power.
-allignment never is correct and pulls to the right. The front suspension is under warranty for 120K for this issue so maybe that will help. I havent had that done yet.
-CV joints were replaced
-The hydrolic hood stands needed to be replaced.
-Almost all of the recalls except for the engine replacement. The power train warranty has been extended to 120k miles
-The a/c compressor needed to be replaced.

It has more then 4 months since I made this change and there have been no issues. 👍
I’m on my second within the last month. And I have a Elantra 2012.. but I cannot keep getting stopped..
suggestion: I use a clean paper towel to hold the lightbulb when installing. keeping oils and grease off the glass that might cause a bulb to fail in the future.
TweekerDan1984 yes
Will the socket being bad cause the third brake light to stay constantly lite I had a driver side bulb burn out and when installed new bulb it will not light up and the 3rd eye stays on
If the wires or the bulb were to get so hot that they melted you could have a short in the circuit causing constant power to the bulb.
Which 1157 do I get for the 2013 SE Hyundai
@Beemash When I created this video, they did not offer LED bulbs that did not require modifications, now you can simply swap the bulbs and you should be good to go.
Did the sockets look damaged? (melted or corroded?)
@dRosequist most auto stores do offer replacement pig tails for these taillights.
This video helped so much. I have been having brake light problems and the last one burnt the socket completely. I'm now using the 1157 as you stated and no more issues. I have a 2011 Hyundai Sonata. Now, if someone could just fix my air conditioning problems I will be happy.
Thank you for sharing.
I discovered the brake light on the drivers side out. Purchased the 2357. When twisting to remove, only the bulb came out and not thecsilvet casing. Now I can see it's totally burned! How much is this gonna cost me?!
Found that the whole
@@smacknyc4108happened to me I just went to the junkyard and got the whole taillight 😭
Start a class action suit against Hyundai. This whole thing reeks of bad engineering!!
Kia forte brake issue 2017
I absolutely agree!!!!!
I thought something was going on seems like I'm constantly replacing my bulbs so that weeki put in the long life bulbs and before the weekend the damn thing burnt out again I think I'll try the 1157
I need you to come fix my lights because I'll break something if I try and do it myself. I wish I never got this car
Don't forget the engine recall 🙄😠.. mine got replaced n now hear noises in the dash 🙄🔫
This happened in my 2011 Sonata 2.0T
I took it to dealer and it was fixed.
So just use a different level bulb?
That is correct, but bless the bulbs socket or wiring has become melted in that case you would need to replace them.
That is just to get rid of hyperflash that LEDs cause in some vehicles.
Oh thats great news as I am trying to get LED light bulbs but not looking to install the Load Equalizer
Thanks, it work beautifully.
Without replacing any wiring simply replacing the light bulbs with LED bulbs has seemed to fix this problem for so many others.
Do you think I can do this on a 2013 Santa Fe ?
Any chance this pigtail will fit a 2018 Elantra? I'm having trouble finding a match. Advance Auto no longer sells it.
@Lacey I will look into this for you.
@@TweekerDan1984 thank you so much!
It may be a poor connecting within the socket itself. With the power off you may be able to clean or adjust the contact points of the socket.
@@TweekerDan1984 new halogen bulb in passenger tail light (no leds this time) doesn't come on, starting to think it's a bigger issue
It does sound like a short, you may want to check the wiring in the trunk for melted wires and inspect the inside of the light sockets for damage.
Tons of viewers had shared the the Led lights will also work without any conversions.
Thank you for sharing.
This is exactly the price and problem I was quoted! $640 bc my sockets are burned out
Just replace the harness. They sell them for about 50 ish? This whole brake light issue is such a pain in the butt! Never again Hyundai
Are you able to share which harness you purchased? Thank you.
Worse case if my repair doesn't last the socket will need to be replaced.
are the 1157 as bright as the 2357 bulbs? I've only had my 2016 Tucson for 1 year and I'm on my 3rd set of bulbs
Technically they are not, but it is very hard to see a difference. I would recommend going with a brighter LED bulb if you have any concerns about brightness. Also people have shared that just using a led bulb with out any electrical modifications has been working great.
@@TweekerDan1984 Thanks!
Mine is burning out almost monthly. I now have to get a new harness. Thanks for this video!
Q Mordica yeah im having the same exact problem
Where did you buy harness?
Q Mordica don’t use electric grease like this dumb ass on the electrodes
We need a new harness too smh
I need a new socket
Thanks for the video this helped me out a lot just got the wife a 2013 Hyundai Sonata and I was replacing the bulbs almost every week smh
Awesome I’m glad it has helped. Thank you for sharing.
Thanks this helps but what do you do if the lights wont turn off?
Naomi Yshua are just your taillights or brake lights staining on?
My 2011 Hyundai Sonata the driver side tail light harness caught fire and caught all the material thank God I carry a fire extinguisher with me I was able to extinguish the fire I had my 3 kids and wife in the car I got the car put out before the fire department arrived only lasting damage after replacing the tail light and all the trunk carpeting is a small spot where the paint bubbled on the outside
Very scary.
Works perfect on my 2018 Elantra. Super ez fix
@Mike Edmonston thank you for sharing your make and model. Cheers!
Mine melted the actual light housings and warped it so that the wiring harness doesn't fit into them anymore
Just had this happen how’d you fix it?
@@thol7762 I haven't, yet. For some reason, it's hard to find the replacement light housings. I replaced the bulbs with the ones described in the video about a month ago and, so far, they're not running hot or burning out. I just electric taped them into the housing, for now.
MrShabindigo I found a full assembly but it’s not factory idk how it would last but it’s new and comes with harness and taillight.

You said we need a load equalizer for led brake lights. Why? I thought those were for turn signals.
Also I don't have a warning light for lights out on the dash... just thought I'd mention
It worked just as you said. Thanks!
My driver side brake bulb keeps going out whenever a cop or mechanic looks at it. They always tell me it's out and i show them the package in the glovebox, to show them I recently replaced it. I figured it was an issue with the wiring itself
Did you end up trying this?
It is the wiring. U can replace it for around $30. Its the wiring harness that needs fo be replaced.
@@theemikecee got a link? Do you mean the bulb socket, or the wires too?
Right brake light on tail light works off and on 2018 Elantra what can I do? Have to remove entire assembly now instead of just the light bulb
I would guess there are damaged contacts or wires near the bulbs socket.
Honestly Hyundai just need to do a recall! Everybody’s car shouldn’t have this issue! It’s ridiculous!
My inlaws gave my son a 2012 Sonata fir his first car. We have replaced the bulbs on both sides twice now and they have been the 1157. Guess it is time to try the LED
Or a new harness
