  • Mike P tries out a 4mm drop Altra for the first time - the new Altra Experience Wild. Could this be a game changer - both for Altra and perhaps those looking for a more comfortable cushioned shoe designed for midfoot/forefoot strikers???
    Lots to like here after an initial test run - very comfortable cushion, spacious foot shaped toebox, reasonable 4mm drop, and nice low 9.8 oz /269g weight in my US9.5 given the 32mm heel / 28mm forefoot stack height and cushion. Exciting times for Altra! The more foot shaped options on the market the better !
    The $145 Experience Wild will be available May 2024.

    Wow! I am not even close to being as good a runner as you and certainly not lightweight. But still apparently looking for pretty much the same things in my shoes as you :)
    Been almost exclusively running in Topos with drop for some years now and been looking for a good alternative.
    Thanks for the review!

      Love me some Topos, but competition is a good thing! I do think Altra has typically had better feeling midsole foams, but the zero drop thing has been a hangup for me running in them a lot. If they go forward with the 4mm drop thing, it could make things interesting.

    This sounds great, just what I'm looking for. Wonder if they'll phase out the Outroad, as the Wild seems like a great hybrid road to trail option?

    • @MikeP-RTR
      @MikeP-RTR 2 місяці тому +2

      Definitely a hybrid option here. The outsole is flexible enough, lugs are closely spaced so you don't get that clunky feel on the road. Smooth rocker ride works well on hard pack and road.

    I think this shoe is excellent for heel strikers, the rounding of the heel translations perfectly to a roll off however you land. One of the best heel designs of any shoe.

    • @MikeP-RTR
      @MikeP-RTR 2 місяці тому

      Yes, I didn't mean to imply that it was bad for heel strikers. Just that I always think a slimmer heel is more efficient and logically makes works better for midfoot strikers. But especially with the extra 4mm under the heel - it's good for all

    Looks like a warm upper, but overall an interesting looking shoe.

      It's an engineered mesh, probably looks warmer in pictures. But it was cold on my first run, will test in warmer temps

      It's a non-rigid engineered mesh, similar to many other shoes. With the intended usage and terrain I describe in the full review on RTR website, I don't forsee any issues

    est ce que ca serais une betise de dire que Altra s attaquent a la Hoka SG avec ce model ?

    • @MikeP-RTR
      @MikeP-RTR 2 місяці тому +1

      Speedgoat has much better foothold and security, way more technical range. Not a direct comp. If you only use Speedgoats on mellow terrain, just for the cushion factor, then it could be more of a comp.

    How deep is this shoe? Timp 4, Superior 6 are very shallow! Does the foot sit deeper in this shoe, so you avoid heel sliding?

    • @MikeP-RTR
      @MikeP-RTR 2 місяці тому +1

      It's deeper than both of those, a lot more than Superior 6. There's more volume all around in the Wild - way more than Superior 6 and somewhat more than the Timp 5, but that could also be due to the looser upper. It's generally a better option for those with high volume feet. Volume-wise: Experience Wild > Timp 5 >>> Superior 6

    • @DevelopingNL
      @DevelopingNL Місяць тому

      @@MikeP-RTR can it be used as a normal walking shoe and would it train your feet as a barefoot shoe?

    • @MikeP-RTR
      @MikeP-RTR Місяць тому

      @@DevelopingNL It would be a great walking shoe for paths, light trails etc. It's fine on the streets/roads too, but you'd probably be better off with the Flow version in that case. But the Wild is wider than the Flow if you want more toebox space. It's not a good barefoot replacement though - there's too much foam underfoot for that and definitely not as much ground feel. Way different than a Vivobarefoot or something like that. Superior 6 is a great option for casual use, but the footshape is definitely slimmer.

    How does this compare to something like the Ultra Glide 2?

    • @MikeP-RTR
      @MikeP-RTR 15 днів тому

      No comparison in terms of toebox obviously. Besides that, the UG2 has a round-ish, rocker feel underfoot. Wild has a more standard, non-rockered underfoot feel. Wild foam is softer. Difference comes down to ground feel- the UG2 just wants your foot to keep "rolling" and somewhat limits ground feel. Wild lets your foot spread out and feel the ground more. I much prefer the Exp. Wild

    How does the Wild do as road-to-trail?

    • @MikeP-RTR
      @MikeP-RTR Місяць тому

      Yes, great option for that - smooth ride, and the outsole has dense, medium-sized lugs so it doesn't feel like you're clomping around on the road. I'm 1/2 mile from the nearest trailhead, so I get to test that for all shoes.

  • @DevelopingNL
    @DevelopingNL Місяць тому

    Is it a fast shoe?

    • @MikeP-RTR
      @MikeP-RTR Місяць тому

      I'd say no - there's no plate, no super foam. Just a normal, smooth rider, no interference. Light weight (for the stack) and great for training.

    Alfa Fwrd was extremely short and narrow,, its absolutely not same fit as Torin, not understand those bloggers sho say its TTS...maybe sponsored revews.... i wonder if flow is better fit than fwrd

    • @MikeP-RTR
      @MikeP-RTR 2 місяці тому +1

      Didn't test that one, but this one is 100% true to size for me, perhaps on the roomy side. I have Superior 6 and Timp 5 in the same US 9.5. I had a Torin 4 Plush a while back, and this one has a similar fit, although that Torin was even roomier as I recall. I'd say the fit/volume of this one falls somewhere between my Timp 5 and the Torin 4 Plush that I had.

    Why is Altra making shoes with ANY drop to them?! The only reason we buy them is for the zero drop! They are systematically ruining their brand with each passing year. (Well, whichever corporation the creators sold the brand's name to is ...)

    • @christopherblodgett8362
      @christopherblodgett8362 2 місяці тому +8

      It's a transitional shoe to get more mainstream buyers interested in their shoes. You're asking for an injury going from 8mm straight to zero drop. This is a good middle ground to get used to before moving on to a Timp.

    • @MikeP-RTR
      @MikeP-RTR 2 місяці тому +5

      They still have their core zero drop offerings. But there's definitely more of a market for non-zero drop - they do always have to think about selling more shoes. I think the low drop with the footshaped toebox is a very good middle ground, and probably closer to what most runners should be using anyway. As long as they don't totally drop their core models, I don't see any problem with this, even for Altra fans.
