    When I first started playing live. I would get shaky hands, vomiting, intense sweating and extreme uncontrollable diarrhea. Thankfully after 15 years of playing live shows every weekend. Most of my band-mates have just gotten used to the smell and the mess

      When I first started I would play with eyes closed. Now it's just a natural thing I do lol. People always say look up! Idk everyone has their own way of dealing with it. I'm more worried about people being there and having fun.

    One thing I like to do is arrive at the club early and get to know the stage, the room and basically get used to everything. I like your advise about simply having gratitude. That is huge.

    Never show up to a gig late. I like to get there way in advance to set the kit up just right, check in with staff, walk around the venue, etc. . . give yourself plenty of time to get adjusted and feel comfortable. Hell, I'll even just sit at the kit and quietly noodle around to get myself in that headspace. I've had band members show up late to gigs and it adds so much unwanted stress. For those starting out with live performances, the stress gets easier with each gig and just keep at it! 🤘

    I was playing guitar at a charity gig. A lady singer's kid yelled out between songs, "Mommy's so beautiful!" She looked so embarrassed. But she seemed to gain a bit of confidence after that.

    Years ago, different context, I attended a training class where the presenter went through the long convoluted "memory mnemonic" about how to remember someone's name. He went through it only one time, then at random picked someone out of the audience and had them come up and repeat it - in front of 500 people. At the end he surprised everyone by asking, "Ok, by a show of hands, how many of you were hoping they'd mess up and embarrass themselves?" Zero hands went up. "Ok, now how many understood that was scary and were pulling for them to do well?" Every hand in the place went up. Then he said, "So, the next time you have to get up in front of people, remember that. They all want you to succeed.". I've never forgotten that lesson.

    For anyone who wants to dig deeper into the issue of psychological comfort on stage I strongly suggest reading the book Effortless Mastery by Kenny Werner. The author is a jazz pianist but the book equally applies to all genres and instruments.

I remember what got to me was other drummers watching every hit you make and starring at you , thats rough but i just played the songs how they are supposed to be and not did anything different to throw off the band .I would say to myself hey this is my turn to have fun and enjoy this when they go ill watch them if there better so what as long as you enjoy life and what your doing and i watched a lot of my fav show the Sopranos thats toughend me up badddaa bing lol Great vid stay well

    Fear of Judgement. So true. I haven’t played live in forever but would like to some day again.
    But one thing that helped me back then was knowing that most ppl in the audience aren’t looking at you. They’re mostly talking with their friends and not knowledgeable to analyze your playing. They can’t tell if you didn’t open the hi-hat on „e“. They just wanna shake ass and rock out lol.

    My nerves seem to go away after the first song so I really over rehearse the opening song . BTW everyone in the band has nerves so we select an opening song we’ve all super confident in . Not sure any lead player wants a ripping solo to start the night.

    Even the pros experience this. I opened up for a nationally known country star who was shaking like a leaf on a tree. When I asked him if he was alright he just nodded. I thought if he's this nervous how's he going to sing? As he was shaking walking out I kept thinking I hope he doesn't pass out. After the first song he was good to go. Good advice from beat down. Keep chillin'.

    @RobBeatdownBrown,
    I remember back in the mid 80's when I first started playing in pub bands here in New Zealand, at 18 years old, I was like a deer in the headlights when it came to counting off the first song.
    Tell the band you're with, that you're not going to yell out "1-2-3-4!", instead, hit your hi-hat
    for the first count-off.
    This really helped me to negate a LOT of stagefright and after 2-3 shows I was fine.
    I had a Remo practice pad in one of the back rooms of these hotels and I would make sure that my stick technique was correct, it's little things like that that mentally prepare you for what is ahead.
    I've played many hundreds of gigs since then, but it is always the same butterflies in your stomach, tension, you name it.
    The worst thing you can do is use alcohol to try and take the edge off your fear of a show.

    Thanks Rob, great advise,used to get nervous racing cars and now this
    But was always reminded a little nerves is good, but not too much. In racing we learned if you stopped getting nervous that means it's time to get out of the sport. This was good I get nervous before we start, but once I get playing it immediately goes away.

    Great tips! As a DJ I've also had a few moments where nervousness came into play, but nerves to an extent are good because they mean you're not complacent about what you do. Just like you describe, get out there and give it your best shot and enjoy the moment and pleasure your performance is giving others. The positive effect what you do has on them.

    Whenever I do anything on stage, I play a character. Way too shy to be up there as myself. Even if I'm hidden behind a kit and the singer's taking all the attention, I'm in character. It works, but if someone should pay compliments to my performance, I feel like I don't really deserve it. After all, it wasn't really me up there.

    Rob, I could have used this advice about 30 years ago! My hands would be ice cold before going on... but you nailed it about having a loved one in the audience. I would see my wife out there, and I just tried to get through the first song, and then it would be fine. The trouble was reeling in my tempos after that....I still feel bad because some songs were like a speed drill for the lead guitar player !

    • @drummer78
      @drummer78 2 місяці тому

      When you think about it, it isn’t really natural to get up in front of complete strangers and try to engage them with sound. I mean, even Shamen knew their tribe. Playing a club/bar is a bit different as there are a lot of people who sometimes seem more interested in their meal or phone than the band. Also, god help you if you play a gig where there is a big screen TV playing the night’s local NBA/NHL game, etc. Drummers in particular have a hard job to not only provide a nice appropriate tempo for every song -but to do so even when we are in front of strangers in a high pressure situation. In fact, it is kind of amazing we can do it all. I guess experience helps a lot but it is never always easy for even the experienced (maybe that’s important)
      I do think continual practice/drill and maybe a bit of self forgiveness…plus sense that ultimately this all is supposed to be fun helps a lot.

    1- Slow breathing with your eyes closed. 2- Allow your body to relax (get rid of the tension), 3- Enjoy the moment (don't fear the moment), 4- Know your music so well, that you can play it without thinking about it too much!

    It was horrible for me up to grade 7 then the hormones kicked in and I had no problem being in front of a crowd - that was prior to performing in any manner - then I started DJing live in grade 10 and that bolstered my confidence. I'm not a 'hype man' and don't like the attention being solely on me..but I can handle little portions of this limelight. Funny how a clap or 'whoo-hoo' or whistle can put you into the drivers seat. Great topic and yes ..they came to support you !!!

    Nerves are good IMO. I get decently nervous/anxious before every gig, but as soon as we start playing, it all melts away. I dont fight the pre show nerves, I just know once we start ill be ok, and it has really helped. I would recommend embracing the nerves, and once the music starts, allow yourself to melt the nerves away and get in the groove. Its a lot easier to overcome them when you have sowmthing else to focus on, like playing your instrument. Its hard to kick the nerves when youre just sitting there, waiting...

    when I've played in church, the way I see it- really no one knows exactly what you're playing, and even if it is supposed to be played that way- I find especially in Church performing, less is more, so If I get behind, off, or lost at all, I'll resort to my Hat's or the Ride to ease back into the part- Nerves seem to go away 1/2 through the first song. It's the week prior that I think about it more and like RB said, I try and look forward to it as something exciting rather than a chore.

    I was in a battle of bands at 14 in an auditorium and the bass drum would never sit still. Wish I saw the picture of Elvin jones throwing down nails to keep his kick intact….anyhow…The bass guitarist broke a string and literally played with three strings . Sometimes you need to have an absolute worst since you realize it happens and it moves forward . Funny thing is the audience seemed to love it all regardless.

    I will never forget this local rock band where the guitar player/vocalist stumbled on a rug on stage and just kept playing, and the whole mess just added this spice to the performance. Something clicked in me. Mistakes are also part of the magic of the moment. Laugh about them. Now when I jam with a friend and make a mistake, instead of whipping the insecure 12-year old me in my head, I just pat him down and laugh about it, and it's part of the joy of playing.
