The first time I saw "Titanic" I walked out and said "Who was that soprano in "Hymn to the Sea"?" Someone said "That was Celine Dion". I said "That was not Celine Dion!". I walked over to the poster and that's the first time I saw her name, "Sissel"!
James Horner wanted Sissel to sing the title song but the producer wanted someone with "name" recognition. Also shows her grace in still doing the background vocals!!!
Sissel is the best singer in this world without any doubt
She’s magnificent
i totally agree
National treasure❤️thank you for reminding.
This is why she is one of Norway's great gifts to the world. And why so many of us love her. (And it's pronounced SIS- ul.)
You did Sissel finally 😍😍 so happy!
When saying Sissel you add pressure to the first letters of the name SISSel. If that made sense:)
aww, Sissel is so talented. Thank u ❤️❤️❤️
I was in the army in 1984 and in one end of our barracks we had a television/living room. I remember when "Syng med oss" (Sing with us) was on Telly. I coulden't even get in to the room, I was stood in the queue because Sissel was on (I think she was 16 years old at the time).
Wow! Adam that was incredible! Your reaction! What a beautiful voice. True perfection. More please!💖💖💖🇨🇦
Adam I can not believe you've never heard of her. She REALLY gets to you, doesn't she? I consider her the top singer on this planet and you now know why. She rarely sings in a studio almost all her work is before a live audience. She truly is in a class all by herself in both voice and presentation. Notice her expression & smiles (in most of her presentations). Its not just her awesome voice, range, vibrato, clarity. btw don't even think about watching her with the Mormon Tabernacle. This is the only house whereby I saw her cry the reaction to her performance was that powerful. I've noticed over the years that her voice has mellowed but its even more enriched now from when she was younger. one more note here.. she sings in FIFTEEN LANGUAGES and speaks absolutely PERFECT English. You would never suspect that she was born in Norway in a million years. And on top of all this what a beautiful Soul she is as well. She reminds me so much of Judith Durham. Listen to Judith and you once again will know why I state this.
If you have seen Titanic, you had already heard her sing :D
Very, very nice reaction. Whoever listen her for the first time can hear a best singer of this era. No matter what she sings. One of a kind. One and only. Ethernal. She can do whatever she want. I am mesmerized. She is, of course, Norway National Treasure, but also she is the world gem. And, I never heard any wrong note in her singing. Her duets with Pavarotti are timeless and magical. The ease of singing, always her beautiful smile, makes me happy whenever I hear her. And I listen to it often.
Yes!!! This is what I also felt when I heard her for the first time. It felt as if she sings from te inside of my body., it is like an historical event to hear her the first time. And then you want evry body to hear her. My ambition is to see her in concert.
norways golden voice. you are touching our national treasure here, Adam. Thanks!
What an exquisite and powerful singer! Never have I seen anyone singing classical opera looking right at the camera and totally relaxed .. eyes, face, neck, throat .. nothing looked like there was any kind of work going on .. and the sound that comes out of that relaxation is soulful and clear and completely magnificent. I could watch her and listen to her forever. How often have all of heard this song .. and how could it be that it was brand new and soul changing. Thank you, thank you Sissel. (I think it's Sih-sell .. accent on the first syllable.) Thank you Adam!
I pronounce her name with the accent on the first syllable. She sings so effortlessly. Although she is a Soprano she has such tremendous range you would not expect her to reach these high notes so effortlessly.
I pronounce with accent on the first syllable. nobody messes with her last name we all know her simply as Sissel. The Norwegian announcers introduce her that way as well.
Thnks for this great reaction to our Sissel....she is always amazing. Love her
Her covers of Elvis Presleys song "Surrender" and Jon Lord(RIP)(Deep Purple) song "Wait a while" are my top covers of her.
Wow! A masterpiece Performance by Sissel! I am 61 and grown up listening to her and she is one of my favorites! There is one song that I have listened to so manny times and that is Slow Down with her and the Tabernacle choir! She got a standing ovation from a jammed packed arena! This is a must watch! PS, bring some tissues!
You know it. that reaction from an audience like that made me cry like a baby! and it blew her away as well that is the ONLY time I saw her lose it... I really do not believe that she realizes what she does to us.
I have also found myself listening to to this song, slow down…love her voice and meaning she puts in the song
I have listened to her for years. First time I heard her sing, I thought oh my goodness. IN MY LIFE, IS ONE OF MY FAVORITES .
Hey Adam, I used to go to thrift stores to look through the vinyl to find hidden treasures. Then the CD's started showing up for a buck a piece. I've some great music that way. Many obscure Blues bands and also singers. One of those finds was a Sissel CD. Her voice holds so much peace in it that it lulls you into a meditative state very easily. I played it a lot at night to help me sleep. Then my stereo equipment started breaking down and I haven't had the resources to replace it. I've been on disability for the last 20 years or so. So I don't have much left in the budget to save or spend on equipment like that. I can listen to it through my computer but it can't be played loudly enough for a rebellious child o' the 60's.
I am glad you are discovering her for yourself.
I know right!!!!! How do we all not know who this is is?!!! Her tones are so soft-edged, not a hint of blaring or hard jangling edges. Everything is light and soft and powerful. The thing is she can sing Gospel, Pop, the classics from several different eras. I haven't heard her do Metal or other music in that direction. But I have little doubt if given the time she would master that as well. You be on the look out for more from Sissel, and I will look for more of your reactions.
Your reaction to her voice is priceless.
She got her big break in Norway, when she sang before the point was given in the first Eurovision final in Norway, Bergen in 1986. Since that she has been a National treasure in Noway.
Born in Bergen just like her. I was there. She was incredible.
Thanks for your reaction 🤩 I was at her christmas concert in december, she’s amazing. Greetings from Norway 🇳🇴
I have been listening to her for years.
Yes, Adam, "special". What gets overlooked with all these UA-cam clips is that Sissel sings this aria in the midst of a concert of songs from different genres so is adjusting her voice accordingly. That must be difficult. In a purely classical recital such adjustments are less so. She has a classical-style voice but sings mostly popular music, including folk and the odd cool jazz number and lots of faith music. In an interview she once gave, she told the story of how after a concert her dressing room door was knocked and when she opened, there stood Van Morrison who said he had called by to say how much he liked her voice. She said that was better than any award.
Fantastic reaction 👍🤩 You would love to hear her "Slow down" live with the Tabernacle Choir 💖💖
A really amazing song, brings me to tears everytime I listen to this great song.
And it's so peaceful, it's like meditating and getting relaxed by her beautiful voice...
I am not really into religion, but I love her performance! ❤️
Thanks for this, Adam! Listening to our beautiful Sissel! We call her "Sølvstrupen" here in Norway. It translates to "Silver Throat", but i don't feel like that translation does her justice. She is just radiant everytime she sings. Our gem and treasure :)
Been a Sissel fan for about 8 years. There are so many great suggestions here which include links. I hope you will do more reactions to her.
Oh yeah what was wonderful
As far as I know, Sissel has had no classical training or singing lessons at all. She is pure natural talent, has perfekt pitch and a voice that no composer has strained. If so, no one else could sing it😉 As you say, she is in a class of her own.
Hi Adam, great reaction my good man. Yes Sissel is the real deal and you are going to enjoy her magnificent portfolio of great music. Surprisingly not one person mentioned her live performance of a song penned by Jon Lord of Deep Purple called 'Wait A While'. Jon Lord played the piano and she wore a traditional dress for the performance. If ever you want to hear singing perfection this is it.
Cheers.
Adam: the first and second high notes made my belly twitch! This isn't the first song I've heard her sing, but it's the second time in one day I've listened to her sing this song. She isn't talented as much as she is gifted to make you feel what the writer of the song was feeling when the song writer wrote it.
Sissel is also from Bergen..... same place as Aurora (as you know....). Born in 1969....
Yes I live a ferry trip half an hour from Aurora, and 1,5 hour from Bergen an Sissel.
Puccini composed this piece for sopranos. Maria Callas immortalized it. Sissel is wonderful. Thank you Adam
I remember seeing her live in 1985 in Stavanger and somehow I knew then that she was going to be a big star ...
Her voice is heaven sent its absolutely stunning 😍
Not only does she have that incredibly clear voice, she makes it look so easy! When you die and go to heaven, they say, the angels of Heaven will sing to greet you; it's not hard to think which voice will be in the lead.
She is in Norway,s lige..😊👌She had a lot off bjutefuel song,s..she was olso very young when she startet to sing..🌹💟
I have loved her voice since the first time I heard her.
he's right.. she DOES walk in her own league. I knew it the first time I heard her over 30 years ago. Another singer that I enjoyed before her was Judith Durham. Judith only sang in English though but they have a somewhat similar persona. just beautiful people inside as well. Neither sought notoriety either.
I loooooved your reaction😍Super nice to se you react to her😃I am from Norway and I must say I am so proud of her and feel like she is a little bit, a tiny bit, mine😅🙈😍Sissel is one of a kind, she is lovely, her voice is crystal clear and she sings so effortless❤️I will recommend you listen to Sissel and The Tabernacle choir with Slow Down❤️ Also listen to her sing Pie Jesu❤️
Where have you people been for the last years--Sissel is on the GREAT list from Norway. Listen to her when a young lady singing "Solitaire" and be awe struck!
Better to find her than not, right? 😁
Sissel has plenty of non classical music as well. My favorite is Slow Down which she did with Mormon Tabernacle choir. It moved me to tears first time I heard it. I am am not religious, but it was really special. Even if you do not want to react to it, please listen, especially if you have had a stressful day. All the best to you, love your channel.
Slow Down also my favourite. Ive lost track of how many times I’ve listened to this perfect song/singer!
I'm not a super fan of her music, but her singing is very special. And there is no rule without exeptions.
Her live performance of Slow down is out of this world. She made an old ateist cry with a religious pearl.
On of the best liveperformances ever.
@@marylindros6005 I was just thinking how Slow down was *Perfect!* It actually *is* perfect, because there's nothing in Sissel's Slow Down that could be improved upon.
The thing about this singer is that Slow Down was a zenith performance when she was 50, almost 4 decades into her professional career. But she had had other high-water performances: Shenandoah, Solveig's Song, Maria Wiegenlied, Kappangen, Going Home, Wait Awhile... to mention some.
One of here best performance is with out of doubt, Slow Down with Mormon Tabernacle Choir, It is absolutte stunning! 👏
When you go here, listen to all o
Yes, that one is simply stunning.
@@mikedickison5003did you get to 'Slow Down' ? So very effortless. Perfection as humans get .
Welcome to Sissel. You should listen to her rendition of Slow Down. It's amazing. And of course so many of her other performances.
I know and like her since I learned Norwegian for 30 years ago. Nice to see that she is now reacted from so many after all these years. ❤
her onsets are seamless and right at the last moment. nice find
You should absolutely play Sissels live video where she sings "Slow Down". It is magic.
Siss ell can sing any genre!
I’d love to hear her on metal 😁
Hi buddy!!
Wow!! Wow!!
That was the most moving, soft, gentle and so un so real I've ever heard!!
Speechless..
Even, I had a tear in my eye!!
That was glorious!!
Loved your reaction!!
I've always loved this Aria. This is a kickass performance.
O mio babbino caro
Mi piace, è bello, bello
Vo’ andare in Porta Rossa
A comperar l’anello!
Sì, sì, ci voglio andare!
E se l’amassi indarno,
Andrei sul Ponte Vecchio,
Ma per buttarmi in Arno!
Mi struggo e mi tormento!
O Dio, vorrei morir!
Babbo, pietà, pietà!
Babbo, pietà, pietà!
English translation:
Oh my dear papa
I like him, he is so handsome.
I want to go to Porta Rossa
To buy the ring!
Yes, yes, I want to go there!
And if my love were in vain,
I would go to the Ponte Vecchio
And throw myself in the Arno!
I am pining, I am tormented!
Oh God, I would want to die!
Father, have pity, have pity!
Father, have pity, have pity!
We have Aurora, Angelina - but long, long before that Sissel born in -69 and still performing. I think she was 14 first time on norwegian TV, Just search YT and you will find er wide span of music. My favorite is "Slow down" with thw Mormon tabernacle choir,.
Great Sissel reaction. I will suggest that you react to her singing Grieg’s Solvei’s Song, I suggest you do a double reaction to her 1991 and 2019 version to hear her voice at 22 and at 50.
I will give you 4 fun facts, more suggestions and some links.
Fun fact 1) You most definitely have heard Sissel’s voice before as she is the voice behind the Titanic Overture form the 1997 movie.
Fun fact 2) Sissel got her international breakthrough in 1987 at 16 when she sang as the interval performance act at Eurovision. She also sang the Olympic Hymn in 1992 at the Olympic opening ceremony.
Fun fact 3) She very, very rarely does vocal acrobatic, because she simply does not need to. As Aurora and Angelina, she knows to not put all her tricks in every single song, she knows when to be subtle and when to belt, and as the other two she is a master in conveying feelings. Like Aurora and Angelina, she is also very humble with a soul that shines brighter than others.
Fun fact 4) She is form Bergen, the same town as Aurora and Einar Selvik (Wardruna) and Ylivs (What does the Fox say) it’s impressive with a population of 272 000. Now you need to react to Kurt Nilsen, another world class voice form Bergen, and the only one ever to win World Idol.
I can’t wait to see you react to her perfuming Pie Jesu (I dare you to not compare Sarah Brightman's facial expressions when singing Pie Jesu to Sissel's, Jesús alegria de los hombres (this one is spectacular and so different!) Solitaire, O Helga Natt (O Holly Night, in a sea of amazing singers perfuming this, her version stands out) Prince Igor, If I Can Help Somebody, Weightless, Where The Lost Ones Go, Quando Sento che Mi Ami (a duet with Jose Carerras)

She is a miracle. Love her.
Hi Adam, I'm a big fan of AURORA, Angelina Jordan and of course Diana Ankudinova. With Sissel, that's three Norwegian singers. Do they have anything in their water or do they only have enough time to practice during the long winter months?
I also like listening to classical music. And that's how I found Sissel years ago. This recording is more than 20 years old. That's why I use UA-cam. I'm glad if you also react to some of her songs. I love great voices. The genre doesn't matter that much. As long as the music is melodious.
Have a nice weeek and
Greetings from Germany
Adam, you need to hear Sissel sing SLOW DOWN and An angel passing through my room
She has worked with John Williams among others, she was in contention to sing My Heart will go on but John W went with Celine since they worked together before. Sissel sang on other song/songs on the soundtrack though.
*James Horner, and no worries of course… I often mix up Williams, Horner, and sometimes Goldsmith as well. :)
She is amazing we love her in Denmark
Thank you for reacting to Sissel Kyrkjebø. I hope you will continue to react to her 😇
I agree with your assessment completely. She's nonpareil. I suggest "Slow Down," Sissel with the Tabernacle Choir and Orchestra at Temple Square, from 2019. Very unusual religious piece, but her gorgeous voice will bring tears.
Hi again Adam! Yesterday I wrote that you have to react to Sissel singing Shenandoah. I just wanted to point out that it has to be the video that alexhkleung posted 14 years ago.
As far as I know, she has not had classical training, though extensive training in singing otherwise, but most of it is just pure talent she was born with.
She used to be the big song star of Norway, can sing anything, but lately there is so many more that has come around. From where I don't know. just pops up. She was being launched in USA, but personally I think it ended the day she forgot the text singing the US national Anthem in an NHL hockey match .. oh and she sang on Titanic the movie, but they chose to use Celine Dion on the music tracks as her name was bigger I guess. And to be honest, she still is the biggest song star of Norway and has been for God knows how long!!!
She was offered an 18 million dollar contract in the States after Titanic. However, she got on the plane home to family & friends without having to think about it. Her agent was not pleased. She didn't even discuss it with him.
Sissel's considered to be one of the best crossover sopranos. (SiSS-El - Strong S's, and emphasis on a clear and strong EL sound... like saying EL in Spanish, or ELectric )
She's toured with Michael Shore and the Lord of the Rings concerts. She sang in the score of Titanic. Some of the parts where people believe it's Celine Dion, it's actually Sissel.
She was featured in a RAP song "Prince Igor"... from the late 90'ies. I'd recommend you to react to it... just for fun....
Also El as in Elohim, She is an Earthangel
Celine Dion is good but not this good, so if people thought it was Celine Dion it was good for her.
She have been singing from she was a little girl. Now she’s about 60. She is well known in Norway, Sweden and Denmark
She's 54.
Так. Сесіль дуже талановита співачка. Голос незвичайної краси, а високі ноти проспівані на piano, це щось неймовірне. Що тільки вартий твір Е. Гріга Сольвейг.
Чудова співачка. ❤❤❤
I love when she sings folksongs also, so beautiful.
Stunning!
She is awesome, top of the world. 🏆
Yeah, that's what she's known for. Her crystal clear voice, it rings like a pure Scandinavian spring. She is also behind Titanic vocalise part in the beginning of the movie. Yes, yes...
Adam, I would love to see your reaction to her singing SLOW DOWN live
Pie Jesu, you’ll never walk alone, going home are only a few you need to hear from her
I’ve recently reacted to Pie Jesu 😁
@@AdamStraughan nice👍
Sissel is not an opera singer, yet she's performed with Placido Domingo and José Carreras several times. Prince Charles personally requested that she perform at the Royal Variety back in 1995, where she also performed O Mio Babbino (plus another song in Latin, backed by a man's choir: ua-cam.com/video/zWIgjsNaMHU/v-deo.html) with a much stronger voice than here. Of course, singing an opera aria as controlled and delicately as she does in your video is far more difficult than simply belting it out. Mindblowing.
And as for Titanic: Sissel performs the entire soundtrack throughout the film exclusively. Celine Dion only sings during the credits.
yeah that movie showcased her range on the low side which I doubt Celine Dion could reach.
You have to listen to Sissel singing «Slow down» it is magic
Excellent reaction and analysis. She’s so humble she’s not really interested in being an international star. This might not be your cup of tea but she was the background voice doing wordless music in the film Titanic. Check the cut “Rose”
When you said Sissel the first time👌
Sissel is from Bergen as I am, and not far from Aurora .
I remember I watched Sissel on tv when she was just a teenager, same age as myself.
She was singing in a choir, and the tv show was called “Syng med oss” (sing with us).
And since I love music and singing, I always followed the tv show, and I sang with them🥰
I remember my reaction to Sissel, I was “in love” with her, I loved her voice.
And I remember saying to my parents that this girl would be huge, and I was right wasn’t I😉❤️
She’s so amazing, and you really believe what she sings🥰
Btw, have you reacted to Highasakite with “Samurai swords”? The acoustic version 👍
It’s a beautiful and sad song, I really recommend it 🥰
This is the tv show, before she was known, not even in Norway. No wonder I was watching her on tv😍
Sissel starts at 4.30👍
ua-cam.com/video/JY-badSnbzg/v-deo.html
Sissel is not only an amazing singer from young age. Today she is launching her original song. Visiting also God morgen Norge (Good Morning Norway) at TV2 where she sings this. More originals will come from her. 👍👏👍
Sissel❤
Nice reaction. You got a lot of info so I only add this:
Knight of first class of St. Olavs Orden Lady Sissel Kyrkjebø known as Sissel is on of the worlds best female crossover soprano singer ( if not the best ).
Her consert "Sissel in Concert All Good Things" shows who she is ua-cam.com/video/DFrGd4EHlP0/v-deo.html
in this conser she sings all from Opera to Bluegrass because as you will hear her tell you "she likes it".
Lovely Sissel!!!
HI Adam,
Sissel is a Norwegian treasure. She also performed vocalise style in James Horner's score Titanic.
And look at her face when she sings, it looks so calm, no effort. For example when she sings O Holy night, it´s just as easy. Every singer I have seen look a bit strained when they come to the higher parts of that song, except Sissel, she just sings and her voice raises higher and higher without effort. She is in a class of her own, no doubt.
Welcome to the world of Sissel! When I first discovered her, I was completely blown away. Not just her beautiful, crystal clear voice, but how she, as an individual, interprets everything she sings. It doesn't matter what genre she is singing.
Her singing of Pie Jesu melts my heart. The last 3 notes in this performance - wah!: ua-cam.com/video/I1ghkPFb90E/v-deo.html
As far as I know, Sissel have no classical or other singing education at all...beside singing in a amateur choir in her youth. There she was discovered as a sensation out of this world.
Yes , my friend , she can 't be compared with any great singer : it will end as a verdict , in her deserved favor . Alain
She’s also from Bergen ;)
I know I late to the party, but she unparalled.
I would like you to react to a song by Diana Navarro. She is a Spanish singer. With the song "El perdon" she is a very versatile singer who sings different musical styles. With a very personal voice and notes with incredible melismas. greetings from Spain
Look up the live performance with Sissel signing Solitaire with the composer himself, Neil Sedaka on piano.
He was invited to the show to play the piano, and didn’t know the singer. You can tell from his face that he is really surprised and genuinely touched by her voice!
Listen to her in "Slow down " with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir . It gives peace in the soul
More Sissel
Aw you're so cute with your reactions 😍 you're such a loving and sensitive person, Adam... you're always filled with wonder and sweet care for good music! Thanks for your adorable videos ❤️ God bless you!
Thank you!
Please do yourself a favour and dig deep with Sissel Kyrkjebø. She's a national treasure here in 🇳🇴. Her voice is absolutely out of this world. She has so many stunning performances. You have so much to discover. ❤️
Hi! Please listen to Sissel singing; Slow Down..! You will understand where her voice comes from;))
And Sissel is with the emphasis on the i, and a slim l in the end as in slim.
My favourites are Sancta Maria with Placido Domingo and Where the Lost Ones Go with Espen Lind. Her soprano with Placido is sublime and her duet contribution with Espen is amazing.
Her album, All Good Things, is a treasure. One song , Weightless, will leave you literally feeling weightless and asking yourself what just happened.
Check out Sissel concert all good things.
Please react to Sissel singing Shenandoah, listening to her singing that song brings tears to my eyes! If you won´t make a reaction video, I at least hope you´ll listen to it. I can promise you won´t regret it. EDIT: after listening to it again, I take it back. It doesn´t just bring tears to my eyes, it actually makes me cry.
Pie Jesu and Ave Maria, truly like listening to an angel sing, her version of Shenandoah fantastic.
You should really react to Sissel and Jose Carreras singing When You tell me… It is breath taking 🥰🥰🥰
Sissel is tremendous, thank you for your reaction and thoughts. All that’s “missing” from this stunning performance is her trademark warm smile… not really, it’s not always fitting for the storytelling of the song. Name pronunciation and her being another artist from Bergen has been covered already. Enjoy the journey with a terrific artist, and I’m sure everyone would love to hear what your dad thought. Wikipedia details:
“Sissel is considered one of the world's top crossover sopranos. Her musical style ranges from pop recordings and folk songs, to classical vocals and operatic arias. She possesses a "crystalline" voice and wide vocal range, sweeping down from mezzo-soprano notes, in arias such as Mon cœur s'ouvre à ta voix from Saint-Saëns's opera Samson et Dalila, to the F natural above soprano C. She sings mainly in English and Norwegian, and has also sung songs in Swedish, Danish, Irish, Italian, French, Russian, Icelandic, Faroese, German, Neapolitan, Māori, Japanese and Latin.
She is well known for singing the Olympic Hymn (Hymne Olympique) at the opening and closing ceremonies of the 1994 Winter Olympics in Lillehammer, Norway; for duets with Plácido Domingo and Charles Aznavour at the “Christmas in Vienna” concert of 1994, José Carreras, Andrea Bocelli, Bryn Terfel, Josh Groban, Neil Sedaka, Mario Frangoulis, Russell Watson, Brian May, Tommy Körberg, Diana Krall, Warren G, Dee Dee Bridgewater and The Chieftains; and her participation on the Titanic film soundtrack.
Sissel performed the part of Ariel in the Scandinavian versions of Disney’s The Little Mermaid (speaking and singing in three languages).
She appeared on the Lord of the Rings Soundtrack. She performed “The Last Debate/Asëa Aranion.”
Oh, and seeing a reaction to: Warren G & Sissel - Prince Igor
…would be a lot of fun sometime down the road. :)
She smiles where appropriate & this was one of the first things I noticed about her years ago. No other artist does that like she does. she just so, so special no doubt about it. her master of languages is also incredible I do not know how one person can do the things she does to be honest about it. and on top of all this she's such a beautiful person.
Norway strikes again 😎
Sissel worked with James Horner and was originally intended to do the Titanic song, however the producer felt that a Canadian, Celine Dion was easier to sell to the public. You can still hear a little bit of Sissel in the My heart will go on though, as Celibe Dion was not able to do the humming in the hitsong. You can also hear Sissel in other parts of the movie soundtrack.
You can see and hear her recording the Titanic overture here: ua-cam.com/video/EV8LsrPAsj0/v-deo.html
❤️❤️❤️
