      no it's not.....when a music genre becomes 'popular' it always ends up a watered down version of itself......that's because the majority of people want to be involved in something 'underground' and 'cool' but they can't actually handle the pure music........which is why they gravitate towards the more commercial or poppy side of the music....
      perfect example is metallica, people think they'r listening to metal and therefore part of that 'scene' when they isten to metallica, but they aren't, and metallica became a parody of itself to sell huge numbers of records....

      Psytrance is all about psychedelia,
      What you get this days is a kick bass and usually an additional melody on top.
      Nothing about psychedelia can be found in today’s “psytrance” it’s pure shit.
      You can just hear Infected Mushroom or Cosmosis to understand how psytrance is nerfed this days.
      It’s a damn shame and I hope that popularity fall so we’ll get the amazing psytrance we miss so much 🙁

    • @Octopoda555

      Thats the Problem, People only listen to the most simplistic Style of Psytrance, while there are dozens of other Subgenres, like Full-On, Forest, Darkpsy, Zenonesque, Hitech and stuff like that. IMHO Psytrance is getting pulled into a bad Spotlight, where everyone thinks, its just about the god damn Kick and Bass. Its a bit of a shame, that People like Vini Vici are getting so much fame and money for being commercial, by making a simple KickBass, while nobody even talks about the more Complex stuff, that really goes into the Matter. There are sooo many good Artists out there, with a deeper meaning in theyr tracks, who are technically and musically on a whole different planet than Vini Vici, yet the Mainstream considers to listen to them..

    • @Octopoda555
      @Octopoda555 6 років тому +1

      yea, hopefully the mass will understand the true power of psytrance some day! I know a lot People, who started with Vini Vici and ended up really deep in the Scene, so there is hope left! :D

      I got introduced to psytrance by vini vici like 5 years ago, it was a nice introduction, but then I discovered other artists with more complex sounds and different song structures that gives you the 'trance-state' , not just the classick kick+bass. To this day I don't have any song by vinivici in my library

    Yo zen! Could you do a video on call and response?? I feel like a lot of the new main stage EDM songs are doing a lot of that. Wether it be 4 counts call 12 counts response or even 8 and 8. I feel like the call is so much different than the response in most of these new tracks and how can you get that change of an idea in track? It's really hard to change it up so much without an initial idea. Keep the vids coming though. 10 out of 10 content here.

    BONUS TIP : If you want to make it extra bouncy, you can make the velocity of the bass notes going like this : 60%,100%,80%,60%,100%,80% etc... somewhere around those percents does magic.

    • @ZenWorld
      @ZenWorld  6 років тому +6

      Thats cool you can add the velocity feature to the volume or cutoff of the synth for this one to work.

    • @athamz9872
      @athamz9872 6 років тому

      Man you know how dumb this comment is!? It´s just another music genre, prefering pink floyd doesn't make you smarter then a guy who prefers the beatles, grow up! Do you know how many dumb people ar at a random psy trance dance floor? the same as every other dance floor. Just 'cus it opened your eyes for some stuff you don't have to close them for everything else, it's not a religion it's a fkin music genre!!!!

    • @MOSMASTERING
      @MOSMASTERING 6 років тому +1

      I don't know actually.. Genres of music say a lot about a person. If you go to a grime night in London, you're gonna see kids aged 15-20 trying to look black, all entirely dressed in white sneakers and grey hoodies. Its the most depressing, dank, uninspiring, repetitive (and thats saying something, coming from a Trance lover - I can appreciate the changes in the melody, the awesome melodic modes and scales all based on a single bass note, its fucking repetitive to most people who don't 'hear' what Psy is actually doing to stay interesting
      Yeah, compare that dank cold hole playing really awful basement junk that kids think is cool because its so awful and deeply underground and really hardcore etc..) to dreadlocked hippies that spent euros to go to a festival in Italy and dance and be happy, rather than look unhappy and not dance, nodding your head with your friends because dancing is gay, but looking cool is dope.
      Sorry... genres matter. Pink Floyd vs Beatles is Apples to Apples mate.. You gotta think broader.
      Also, the psychedelic sound does require a certain type of person, I like it because at its best, it is possible to invoke feelings of a trip. There is the dance speed - but also stuff liek Shpongle & Younger Brother, Psy-down tempo stuff which is the modern Pink FLoyd, is absolutely amazing and needs a certain type of person - requiring patience and care for music and the effort that thats gone into it. Younger Brother - Train, Ribbon on a Branch, All I Want.. gotta be dome of the finest tracks ever written in ANY genre

    • @athamz9872
      @athamz9872 6 років тому

      All new music genres have they value! And it was not the average 30 year old who bought a beattles album, it was those 15-20 kids. Kids make the industry roll, it's how metal became pop in the 80's, and pop means popular, does not necessary means it's bad.
      This was thing I had has I went into the psy-trance scene, those guys who were going 5-7 years before were already going: "uh, this is not psy trance; the spirit is spoiled, in the old days..." blablabla and the same about shpongle albuns. Man, they turn was over, sorry, too old for this sht, admit it, and let kids go crazy how ever they want "jizz, kids these days..." this statement has been around for 100s of years, and kids are only getting smarter.

    Interesting tip with the arpeggiator, usually I just created separate midi clips if there was a transition. Any advantages / disadvantages on using:
    - Side-chain compression vs LFO to quiet down bass during kick
    - Arpeggiator automation vs separate midi clips / synth automation?

    Hi Dude, very good tut. I need to add a couple of more things regarding your video. 1st of, most psytrance artists actually use single bass samples. only a few use synth for bass but Vini Vici definitely uses bass samples for an israeli company which i will not mention but is available to most users. 2nd, most prog basses, are layered basses with up to 4 layers, the sub cut to 100hz-125hz, the click for the attack of the bass, the body which is anything above 100-125hz and probably cut between 4000-6000hz to that layer you can add distortion and finally a wide bass using the Haas effect with 1 side at 1ms and the other at about 8-9ms. the bass samples are cut to the length desired value of 1/8th,1/8th T, 1/16th. regarding the side-chaining most psytrance producer only use the velocity on the 1st note and make sure that the 1st note doesn't phase with the kick. the Bass is usually sitting around -2 to -4.5db RMS to the value of the Kick RMS value. the 1st not of the bass is usually sitting between -6db up to -15db of the value of the main bass note. lastly KIck and bass are gelled together with several light EQ boosts to bring warmth and clarity.

    Sucks the States is so far behind Europe with the PsyTrance explosion. It used to be huge here but the more commercial sound of Electro House took over. Now the west coast is starting to get good talent at shows I just wish the east coast would catch up. I play prog-psy and have just recently started trying to learn abelton to make my own tracks and have my own brand. Here in Atlanta the hip-hop influence is huge so I try using trap as a break in the repetitiveness of psytrance and give an ATL twist.

Have not been able to figure out how to make a real drop. I have been using apps that go along with the chords, but I love a good drop melody. Just wanted your thoughts on that.

    I could watch you make music all day, just you had time. Your webcam might be a bit smaller so we can see what you are doing.
    You are very good at explaining what you are doing and why.
    I've been following you for a while now and you're doing great I learn a lot from you!
    I'm considering skipping to Ableton from Fl studio, maybe because you make it look so easy
    If, do you have at tutorial ( Ableton for beginners with keyboard shortcuts/ commands
    Sommerlund from DK

    Kinda triggering when people act like vini vici is the only psy producer. Widen your spectrum boyz!

      Yes! I think Astrix is way better personally. His music is way more aggressive i guess you can say ......just pumps way more energy to me. Then again he does play little higher bpm then most prog psy artist. Think his last album was pushing full-on.

    Why does my psybass always sound good in monitors but not in headphones? Or vice versa. Never both at the same time.

    Hi Zen World. When I tried this and placed it on the F0 key it barely made any sound, except for a very annoying repetitive clicking white noise sound. Do you have any idea why? If I need to elaborate please say so, I'm new to this and I'm not yet very good at explaining myself, I don't know very many expressions yet. Thank you!
