E F F# and G are the most often used due to the fact that they are in a bit of a sweet spot frequency wise - around 38-50 Hz, where sub is the most powerful and deep, but is still audible, and most sound systems are able to play it back.
@@RP-vq4wd Good grief. E (and F and F# and G, and G#, etc) are not frequencies; they're pitches. Their frequency depends on what octave they're in and how the instrument or VST in question is pitched. Furthermore, the narrator said he's in F minor; the notes in F minor are F , G, A♭, B♭, C, D♭, E♭ . I can't believe how many "music producers" can't be bothered to learn music theory.
@@pnartg Since we are talking about the very low frequency bass range here there is only one relevant octave anyway, so specifying just the note is completely OK. I don't get why you're so snarky.
This layout is so intuitive, and I love how it blends so well in with Ableton. Not only that, this dude is one of the best music teachers on UA-cam. Nicely done!
this is the first video i watched 2 years ago after i started producing trance and now i just bought sundog and i can't see a way to forgive myself for wasting all this time producing without it, this video is amazing even now that i understand the fundamentals this made learning sundog an absolute breeze :D

It's also very important to have basic understanding of scales and match the bassline notes with the rest of your channels to make it sound more in tune and not dissonance (unless u specifically want to sound like that) example: if your bassline is G# make sure to use G#'s scale melodies and sound effects it will make your track sound more professional and will help you continue your track

Pretty cool video! If there was the such sensible video about how to make the whole psy-trance composition with all the steps from absolute zero to its final professional release it was more much cool!
Great lesson! And an excellent channel! However, two problems arose: 1) How to correctly connect Sundog Studio to Ableton so that everything works correctly... 2) Is it possible to connect third-party (analog) synthesizers to Sundog Studio? If yes, how? Please make a video on this topic! I'm sure it will be very useful to many! Thank you for your work, buddy! I shake your hand!
Thank you :)!! You can find a setup guide for Ableton here: www.feelyoursound.com/sundog-with-ableton-live/. And yes, you can route the resulting MIDI notes from Sundog to an external synth. Simply set the synth as your MIDI Out Device in the Sundog settings.
Remove a little bit of sustain/decay to avoid that "granular yellin saturate" bass effect and make it less "flowing" and a more punchy, reduce enveloppe and you're good!
Hi Anna, I think you are speaking of Ableton Live here (I see no other yellow points in the background ;). It is the DAW that plays back all the instruments. Sundog is connected to Ableton Live via MIDI.
Quick and almost everything you need to start! Maybe some decent speakers, a ok(ish) interface, some acoustic treatment, a good synth and some knowledge about Audio Engineering…😂
Very good tutorial. Any news about Root note issue in Sundog? I mean in Sundog when you using chord inversions, base note is not root note. And it makes your base wrong, especially in EDM. I have to use another plugin (BlueArp) to play root note right.
Sorry for this dumb question - do i need to purchase both ableton and sundog sound studio? Im having such a hard time with Ableton alone and its the software came free with the keyboard i purchased. but it looks like sundog is easier to maneuver ? Pls let me know thanks!
The principles also apply if you only work with Ableton Live. Sundog is a tool which is useful to write harmonic melodies and basslines easily. But you can also do this manually in Ableton Live (it usually takes more time, but in the beginning it's a good idea to learn your DAW first).
You can download the Massive preset at the bottom of this page for free: feelyoursound.com/articles/psytrance-basslines/. There is also a section about Sound Design with a link to a UA-cam tutorial by another producer. I highly recommend his video, because he knows way more than me about sound design ;).
The main program is Sundog Song Studio. It generates the MIDI notes and then sends them to Ableton Live via a virtual MIDI cable. The sounds are coming from synths inside Ableton then :).
Nice video m8 But you guys know that is pointless saying you're in F minor since you just play the one note- that is F -, or a chromatic ascending line, like -FAF -FG#F -FF#F and so on It's neither minor or major scale. It is just the chromatic scale
The scale aspects become more important as soon as you add other instruments (e.g. for background and lead melodies, arps etc.). As it is very rare that a song only needs a bass and a kick, I think it makes sense to use scales even in this bassline tutorial.
Thanks for asking first :)! Actually I'd rather not hear my own voice in a track. But feel free to use my words/sentences for your track and record them again with your own vocals.
the problem is i don't like my voice lol, i speak spanish so it won't work, i swear i will carrier and vocoder the shit out of the vocals, you won't even notice its yours, ill try to send you a demo to see what you think, if you don't like it i won't continue with it :P

i wouldnt say that a offbeat bassline doesnt fit to goa trance, i mean look at the older neelix productions, one of the best psy tracks imo. i think people should not define a genre because of a particular bassline or anything.
Yes, offbeat basslines can be useful for psytrance as well. There's always some space to bend the "rules" here ;). However, I would say that the sixteenth-notes-basslines are sooo common in this genre, that they are a rather easy way to get "that psytrance feeling" going. There are many aspects that shape a genre (e.g. sound design, scales, arrangement). Sticking to the rules in some of these aspects make it easier to act more freely in other aspects - without leaving the genre.
