I shoot a .50 cal hawken percussion cap. You do not need real black powder for a caplock firearm, I use pyrodex RS and it works just fine

Really digging the shotgun as a multifunction firearm. Always thought of my single shot as a crappy cheap gun, but no longer. I'm interested in pickin up a Short Lane 209 black powder adapter, but they say not to use it for anything but shot. Any thoughts on firing round ball using that adapter?
can you only use roundball in this setup or can you use like a lead connical or maxiball setup?

Hey Dave love the vids! I dont want t make any negative feedback but being a reloader myself just wanted to pass some tribal knowledge of caution you may not know. Be careful keeping your primers in a tin or glass jar. As the primer shake around the compund inside will make its way out. As the tin or glass bottle gets coated in this compound it could be fairly easy to bounce around and cause a spark/ignition that could consequently ignite all the primers. Makes a really nice POP!
Nice video dave! the red tail hawk you saw reminds me of when i was in stone mountain GA there was a red tail being chased by a swarm of blue jays, he came down right beside my grandfather and i on a fence post about 6 feet from us. He stood proud and we got to take pictures of him. Thanks again for the great video.
in addition to the 209 adapter they should also make an adapter for a # 10 or #11 percussion cap it's to the point where it's hard to find 209 primers.
have you checked with ODNR to see if you can use this system for muzzle loading season in ohio, or just the regular gun season? thanks.
Dave, I have a few questions please: Will #4 work on coyote? How accurate can one be with pumpkin ball rounds? And, I like the idea of having a follow up shot, or having one bore with shot, and having another bore with a deer load. Would you allow a double barrel for that class?

Idk Dave but I may just be asking you a even crazier stunt then you ever did on dual survival. What is it? Making bullets from Quick Steel Epoxy unit. To shoot through a muzzle loader in case shtf or even last resort gun repairs equipment repares. Waiting to hear back from you. -DAVIDE
Another great video. H&R 12GA is on the to buy list. I grew up hunting with the single shot shotgun and am going to get back into it. Got to do a little hunting in SW Ohio this year when I was on leave, looking forward to doing it again next year

Hey Dave, love your videos hope to see more! Bit I was wondering, what would you do if you were to run out of powder in a survival situation? Do you know of any way to make powder in case of a survival situation , or would you have to fall back on your trapping skills and hope for the best??

Beautiful hawk. I have some friends that are into falconry, and one of the questions they get all the time is "How do you make it come back to you?" The answer is that they don't "make" them - it's a working partnership that the bird willingly is a part of, because he is going to get fed better than he could feed himself (they get fed weather they catch anything or not).

Hey Dave, great vid. Since you are using 209 adapter, have you looked into Blackhorn 209 powder? It doesn't foul barrels and is so clean! It has all the benefits of gun powder, but is a black substitute. It's all I use in my front stuffer!

Another great vid in the 21st century longhunter, The only single shot 12 ga. I have is my great grandfathers, I have pumps and autos but I think I'll have to go to fin feather fur to get a new single shot. The whole 21 st. century longhunter series is great keep going Dave its what I've been lookin for.
I like your comment on gun vs bow for meat procurement. Having just got back from a 3 day traditional archery hunt where I brought no meat for camp meals. If I did not shoot anything it was a meatless meal. Had I brought a shotgun or 22 I would have come home suffering from gout. Instead I was a vegetarian the whole trip. It sucks to stalk in crunchy snow!

Can you find these adapters for a 410 shotgun
Hi Dave, I was wondering what type of traps are usually used at the advanced scout class.
Have you had any students use snares or fig 4 deadfalls with success? (I know you don't really like thoes types, that's why I'm asking)
would it be too much of a liability on you, to make a black powder making video. stores wont always be there for smokeless powders or black powders. if your a real prep-er survivalist you know that. a .22 mini-ball adapter in a shotgun would fit that bill. small amounts of powder used and the weight of a .22 mini-ball. you'll be shooting that thing many times, off of one pound of powder and one pound of min-balls. and you can still shoot shot shells loaded with black powder also.... am i going to far with such a request? i guess you have figured out that i already have a clue as how to create black powders. and hot water trays keep down the dangers of "go boom". you don't want it to "go boom". well black powder is a little safer than modern powders because black powders are a low explosive and not a high explosive like nitro types of modern powders. black powders you mainly get a flash over. but don't use any sort of flame. as you wouldn't when using hot water trays to dry out the glob of un-granulated black powder. then rub the nearly dry glob over a wire mesh to granulate it to powder. where it will finish drying out much faster. now the tricky part it making the primer ingredient for the primer caps. that's if you don't have safety matches with the white striking tips. if you have that much, then you'll need some rubbing alcohol to mix them into a paste and dip that into an used primer cap that have had the dimples fixed with a nail head.
Dave, I wonder if you can tell us about the licensing requirements for your classes, would an "out of state" person that would take your Scout class have to get a hunting license, deer license, trapping license, and other stamps or licenses? Or if this is considered a educational class would those be waived?

Hey Dave quick question I was looking at one of the adapters and it says to load it 75-80 grains max but your measure is for 100 grains does that mean its safe to go with 100 grains of powder?

Is there any reason to worry about lead poisoning when you are melting/casing lead balls?
Not really, especially if you're outdoors. I melt up to 10lbs at a time to cast my own projectiles. No big deal. Just make sure you do it in a well ventilated area and you are handling it safely (heavy gloves). The biggest danger is spilling molten lead on yourself. Basically, you'd have to eat/suck on the lead to get poisoned.
Don't inhale vapours from the melt, nor spill the melt on your body, your sandwiches, or gargle with it.
Wash your hands thoroughly after handling any amount of lead with a stiff bristled brush.
You have to be particularly careful with lead oxide, which appears as a white fuzz on exposed lead. Very dangerous stuff and has during ancient times been used to subsidize for an artificial sweetener!

Dave I understand you only want single shots for your class but this could very well be done with a double barrel (either side by side or over under) break barrel shotgun as well correct? You’d simply need two adapters for each barrel correct

Dave, great vid for all again. Got an issue I need help with. Muzzleloading the 12 ga. w/shot no problem. I have a .69 ball mold, I patched to fit snug w/imp. cyl. went well 'til it got to the top of the 3" chamber, the patched ball dropped to the bottom to the powder, not snug at all. I did not fire this load, was concerned and unloaded. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

I thought about that, that would be a lot of wadding, almost 2", how tightly packed? Is that much needed for a .71 ball?

I like this for a long term setup but wouldn’t pre-measured paper or cardboard cartridges be better for immediate use? I am thinking like civil war muzzle loader cartridge box like setup.
Good show. Not a good idea to use anything for a ram rod that would make a spark! Wood, fiberglass, etc. Wood is probably the best. former Certified Hunter Safety Instr. including Muzzleloader safety.
At the end of the day, if you hadn't shot, do you empty the gun by firing it? I was always told to fire of the powder because it may have accumulated oils or moisture during the day, making it difficult to fire tomorrow. Wouldn't your black powder shotgun shells be a better, less wasteful method?
Really like your shows, they have lots of information and I like the fact that you use black powder.
I like your idea. But I’m not a fan of the shotgun as a hunter’s tool. But I would love a 12 gauge coachman double barrel. Because they remind me of my grandfather he had one and it put me in the mud as a 7 year old. I did learn one thing don’t shoot both barrels at the same time. And my father was the Blackpowder hunter. I love everything about them. And a smooth boar shot barrel I would love. And my brother he is a wheel gun guy.
I guess the next question is: why not schedule the class during shotgun deer season? Its only a couple weeks later, black powder can still be a stipulation, and it would open up the self reliance portion of the class. Attending the advanced scout class and passing up on killing a deer simply because it's out of season seems rather silly when the main deliverable for success is acquiring meat.

Dave, what caliber roundball would you use in the 12 gauge? And in your opinion, would sheep wool function as a decent patch for roundball?
Dave, I live in NC. I am always stressing to people to use a 12 gauge shotgun and carry different loads. They use 300 win mags, 270s, 7mms to shoot no more than a 50 yard shot. The slugs are so darn expensive though
are you patching the round ball or just packing it in with the wadding? What diameter is the bag mold?

You are correct Mr.Nelson. That said, wouldn't it still be a good idea to prepare for a situation where ammo isn't available and the law isn't worried about how y'all feed your family ? As long as you don't hunt with it now, I don't think it's illegal to have everything ready to go ... just in case.
I was just letting anyone know, I still have what I need to do just this, but I have 50 plus rabbits,chickens,genie fowl, secured on my property before I have to hunt.

I've heard black powder is very corrosive, is that true? And if so, does that mean you have to clean your black powder guns a lot?
You can also make your own black powder. Takes a little practice, but better than trying to make a bow.

Dave I know this is a old video and since I've watched it I've been wanting to do this and I just talked to my DEC officer and I'm good to go but I was wondering how much powder do you actually use I know you said the brass was 100 grains but do you fill it once twice?
Dave, First let me say, I am a huge fan/subscriber, I've viewed all vd's and even the ones I didn't really had an interested, I have always learned. So as Six Sigma B-Belt a couple suggestions. 1.1. mount ramrod, and put removable pointed end on. Quicker reloads. 2. have a few quick reloads made up, you can by Brass, plastic or make your own, paper shell with paper, wax or not. 3.You can find powderhorn with a pre-measure built in, saves time. 4. put even a simple sight on gun. 5. say cost involved? 25LBs shot 50+$ a lbs Pyrodex 25$, 100 209 caps 7-8$. Maybe a vid to show these option? KUDOS to guy who shot Coyote, easier to call in, best reward, for risk/time, with front moving in, and how much land you have. Thanks for vids, from a retired military guy with 'issues they have been a God send! when will you get canteen lids I am dying for a couple?

Dave love your videos and everything I've gotten from your store I had a hard time finding a nice American made single shot shot gun so I got a new r.i.a from turkey. Two days later I found a n.e.f modified choke. I got the 209 muzzle loading plug. I think it is awesome. But I would like to get the 22 adapter for one my shot guns do you know were I could find one short lane is always out of stock Dave can tell if can put a rare sight on my n.e.f. thanks for all your help. That's pretty cool how the hawk gets the scraps left from your trapping. I kinda have a pet owl in the woods where I live. I leave him pieces of fish I catch from the pond.I have pictures but I see him at 630-7am when its still kind of dark so they don't come out good.
Thanks Dave, I'm guessing its cheaper to build a shotgun round like that than buying conventional rounds too? what would you say is the accuracy over what range with that set up? and are shotgun barrels smooth bore or groved? im thinking if this impacts any grove/rifling for a round fired through the adapters?

Like the BP philosophy but wouldn't hurt to have a carrier or sling attached to the gun with regular shells at the ready. I color code mine with the wife's nail polish :) so I know which load I'm grabbing just by the brass. No reason this couldn't be done with double barrel?
That would be a cool project. Re-create a ramrod, just like the antique wooden one you showed, with a little carving and some blacksmithing.
Any talk about a 20 gauge 209 adapter? Don't own a single shot 12 so looked for a 20g adapter and didn't find one. Really wanting to check this out on some bushy tails
What about a 20 guage? When you talk about black powder loads does the caliber of the weapon matter anymore? If you take into account for a slug and get the right mold for that wouldn't it be just as good as the 12 guage? When it comes to black powder what advantages does the 12 guage have that a 20 or a 410 doesn't?

For added versatility, why not carry a double, the only added weight is just the barrel but you could load 1 barrel with no.6 shot and another with a slug. FAR more versatility then 1 barrel only, plus if you either miss or there is an extra oppertunity for more game you dont need to reload after just 1 shot. The only downside is a small amount of weight for the barrel for much added ability.
Ever thought about making your setup more versatile by using a double barrel, with double hammers and triggers? That would give you the ultimate scout setup. Big game load on one side small game on the other. No need to worry about he right load. This would be raising the bar a bit though, if price is the point you were making for a common man setup then a side by side wouldn't make the cut. Just a suggestion.

If someone does choose Black powder he's still allowed to make a bundle bow, jig, spear, etc right? (not that he really needs to)
1 what caliber ball mold are you using to make your buckshot 2 do you prefer the blackpowder adapter over reloading the full brass shells, it seems it would be easier to change loads or to get a quick followup shot with the shells.
BB's can ricochet back at you if it hits something hard. It's happened to me. Luckily I was not hit.

I like the setup but I prefer the shotgun in 20 gauge and am wondering if the insert also comes in that size or is it only in 12 gauge also I am trying to find sheep's wool but can't seem to get it along with the molds and when you use round balls in that gauge do you have to wrap them like a patch or it with a powder patch ball and over shot patch like using shot
