I was feeling kind of stressed today and seeing this video and hearing the sound of that fire made my whole day better. A always thank you for the post and your time.
I enjoy your library of video's nightly as I sit next to my Stonebridge candle lantern burning a bee's wax candle watching you live the life. My weekends are full of ramblings in the woods, yet you always take me on a trip with you. Have a safe holiday season my friend, Cast Iron Kid
i earned my camp name of BLACKIE from a flint and steel / blackpowder fire lighting mishap..scorched my eyebrows off..the only safe way i found to do it was to use a fling lock action.at arms length...or to build up the firelay..then place the pwdr below the tinder and strike the flint in a horizonal fashon under the bundle..so when it flashed it would not get me..great video dave..
I jumped too the first time, I tried that...lol thanks for bringing back a memory. smokeless powder from a pistol cartridge is way better more flame less flare up. when you said you used 20-25 grains I knew you were going to jump I did the same exact thing the first time. I found it better to use 2f and sprinkle it around the bundle and then use a concentrated amount near the center about 5 grains around a pinch. great vid Dave.
Man, brother, you are just always having fun aren't you? Growing your hair out and playing with gun powder. Sounds like me about 35 years ago. Good stuff! Especially the slo mo replay.
I love the reaction when you actually ignited the black powder. Don't get me wrong, I would have probably done a backflip If I were you. Another great video, Dave. Keep 'em comin'.
We start the forges at Tannehill Park here in Alabama with flint & steel...but use char cloth instead of black powder. That powder will get your attention quick, won't it? ;)
my grand dad taught me they would also rub black powder into rags to ignite the fire on the trail. his grand ran a chuck wagon and that was his job to orient the tongue with the northstar in the evenings and cook for the hands.
Good reflexes Dave! By your reaction, I take it that you under estimate the reaction, lol Obvious consideration should be given with this method and can be used as an option with damp materials Keep the videos comin!
Dave,I hope ya didn't get flash burnt, black powder cloud will definitely open up your sinuses. Another trick in the bag of knowledge, but I'll save my powder for shooting things to put on the fire. Thank You for all you do for us viewers.
WOOOF! No shit. What can you do to slow down the powder if anything? Could you rub it into a scrap of cloth? How long before the hair grows back on the back of your hand?
The only way to slow down the burn rate of black powder is to use a larger grain size. Dave was probably using FFFG there. You could go to FFG or FG to get the slowest available burn rate, but I doubt you'd notice the difference. The only real way to slow it down would be to use smokeless powder. Depending upon the type--magnum rifle powder is the slowest--it burns for quite a while, but smokeless won't ignite with flint & steel. You'd have to use a ferro rod to ignite it. Using black powder you may be able to pour it out in a thin line & just light one end of it. It would likely burn a little bit longer that way, but only a little bit.
catching a spark onto some char material and then dropping it into the powder might be a bit safer, definitely looks dangerous, you could easily get a flash burn. Interesting backup plan to be aware of, but this method would be my very last choice personally.
Having used black powder quite a bit, I knew what the beginning warning was all about and knew what was going to happen, thinking to myself during your strike "you're too close, back up". Frankly, I would rather use a dozen match heads in that bundle than bp. And No, I did not laugh.
All I can say is beards are flammable if you are not careful my friend. A few years back I singed mine about 1/2 off. Now while I can lay the fire and strike the sparks any close up work like blowing the wife takes over and refuses to let me do. Oh and using powder like this forget about it at least if she is around ;)
Dave i thought you were going to set your beard on fire. I have done it with gun powder and i used a little to much. Brunt my hair a little . Be careful it can flash pretty good
While I have played with black powder myself it is very dangerous and it is an explosive I would never advise anyone trying this. If I were you I would remove this video and I am sure Goex powder would agree. Kids watch your videos and this is not for someone that doesn't know what they are doing. I watch and have watched all of your videos and enjoy them very much you work very hard and I hope to meet you someday, I just think this video is a mistake
That kind of thinking is the problem with the world today. The responsibility lies with the individual, way to much things are regulated by law because of this "safety" your talking about. Every man and woman has to take care of themselves and stop relying on others to keep them away from harm, and just as dave said above a kid is a parents responsibility. Could stretch this to many subjects including the problems you have over there with your 2nd amendement. I joined the NRA to support you guys over there, dont let the paperpushers win. Merry Christmas from a snowcovered Sweden
He has warnings not to try this and well if kids can get ahold of black powder then well there is a lot more dangerous information out there about things you should not do with it. BTW I am a kid that played with black powder and I still have all my fingers and such.
***** Kids get into everything, I know I did. I no longer have kids in the house but when the grand kids come home I have to go around the house putting up my knives and guns I have more gear than I can lock up so I have to hide some, most gets locked away, I have three safes. I no longer have black powder went to a savage ML10 which used smokeless powder.
I like the honesty of your fire lay being in your pocket all day with sweat and all. Great video.
nice video, when that spark hit, MAN you jumped! next video: how to clean your drawers in the bush! LOL
good video, Dave.

Very incendiary indeed!
how would it work with modern powders from an opened cartridge? same principle just use a little less I guess??
my grand dad taught me they would also rub black powder into rags to ignite the fire on the trail. his grand ran a chuck wagon and that was his job to orient the tongue with the northstar in the evenings and cook for the hands.
The old timers called it rub cloth-
That was great Dave. I dont think I've ever seen you startled before. : )))
Good reflexes Dave! By your reaction, I take it that you under estimate the reaction, lol

Dave had a Adam Savage am I missing a eyebrow moment
That black powder goes pretty quick don't it? That was a pretty good jump!
Wake up at @4:15.....nice work
LOL For Sure
***** LOL, I have done the same! I was concentrating too much on getting it lit and forgot to stay leaned back some :) *****
they had permangenate and glycerine as well in the days of black powder, yes, Dave? I remember we mixed equal parts and stood back... :)
Seriously, as I began reading the pop-up warning I thought it was supposed to be a bit of humor about your hair !
And BAM!! you have fire.Nice Vid as always.

Good research! That black powder worked pretty good even though the tinder was a little damp. Were a good place to get "Camp life in the woods"?
Dave, It looks like you jumped 5 feet into the air when it went off and came down ready to add oxygen.
Loved it!
was wondering if you could do a video on the solar pocket mirrors I have seen seems to be better and bulletproof compared to a lens
Just like a flint lock rifle spark ignites powder. A lot of people today could not light a fire with matches.
Well done!
Black powder can be nasty. watch your fingers guys..

Would have loved the camera to have been on your face when the powder ignited. LOLOL.......That would have been priceless!
dave proves in his off hours that he is secretly a ninja
Hey Dave what is the sweater you are wearing? It looks awesome.

Looking good without those eye brows!
will black powder ignite with a magnifying lens?
yup that works too
Jumping Jack Rabbits that powder went up quick!
Snowalker13 has a clip on making & using Rub Cloth which is pertinent to this

Awesome vid! :D
Damn near blew your face off but it didnt seem to bother you! Great vid keep them comin

Looked a little dangerous to me. I'll stick with my ferro rod. Do you have any hair left on your right hand? Thank you Dave.
Like the new look with the half ponytail. Looking more like Cody every day. Just kidding brother.
How would you smoke meat?
Dave, please share your hair growth secret. I am a year or 2 younger and my mop refuses to come out of my skull anymore.
Dave i thought you were going to set your beard on fire. I have done it with gun powder and i used a little to much. Brunt my hair a little . Be careful it can flash pretty good
That would work even better with smokeless powder. The powder would have a much longer burn time.
Actually smokeless powder is harder to ignite. If you get it going it will work but it is much easier to ignite with a coal than with a spark.
you da man
Dave Never seen you move so fast Brother lol just joking.
I jumped like a little girl at 4:15...lol
Yeah... I wouldn't even try that. I need my eyebrows.
Thanks for the video
nice vid
that's one way to stay on ur toes lol for sure
You move pretty quick for a member of "the club". Just sayin' !
Hahaha...Lol! I about jumped to!
by golly, that 4FFFF burns fast, don't it? lol, If ya want some real fun, throw a few primer caps in the birds nest ;-)

The safety police?
Kids having access to Black Powder is a bigger issue than this video brother-

There are safer ways to trim your beard brother. LOL Your hair and beard look great. That's how a mountain man's supposed to look.
careful burn my self doing that it surprise me when it went up!
