RIGHT?! Anytime I have resolve, photoshop, FCPX, after effects and whatever else open if its just one of those crazy days its so fun to see like 10% of RAM being used haha
That's the same reason that i got that 8TB of storage on the Mac Pro. I love having so many storage. And yes, it costs a lot buying from Apple but at least, i can use some of the PCI-E slots for other things like an extra GPU or sound module for my music production. I have 96 GB which is plenty at the moment.
I have ordered my Mac Pro this week. I am also getting the ram upgrade from OWC but ordered a dual Radeon Pro W5700X GPU from Apple in the initial build. One thing I am adding is the Sonnet M.2 4x4 PCIe 3.0 x16 Card for NVMe SSDs card and initially am populating it with only 2 of the possible 4 Samsung 2TB 970 EVO Plus NVMe M.2 Internal SSD chips. This will give be an internal 4TB SSD drive for only $1100.00 now, and I can add another 4TB at $350 per chip (2 chips total) down the road. At the end of the day I'll have an 8TB internal SSD Raid 0 screaming at over 11,700 MB/s for a total cost of $1800.00.
Hi Michael :) Im Considering upgrading to a w5700x or to a w6800x, Right now I have the base 580x gpu and a Vega 64, with two screens (Apple LG 5k, and an Apple Thunderbolt Display) Any insights what would be a better price/performance choice? Im working almost exclusively with Adobe after effects (no video editing, just vfx) Thanks
Nice to see the upgrades! And i also was a little in shock when i saw my comment in your video 😂 This usually never happens 💪🏻 I'm happy with my Mac Pro. I did end up buying it. I got the 16-core, W5700X GPU, 96GB of ram and 8TB of internal SSD storage. Just because i didn't want to use my drobo to edit of. Because of the reason you mention (they are not SSD"s). I couldn't be happier! You will be good with the ram for while now though 😂 Great video!
Excellent videos ESPECIALLY on the Blackmagic Ursa Pro 12k work with the base model 2020 Mac Pro! And now seeing this one. Question.... What kinda of production do you work on? I’m getting into cartoon animation in 3D cinematic environment and want to have the right power for my work & experimenting. As well as future proofing.
I bought the base Mac Pro w/ W5700X and bought the 28 core on Ebay for $2900 USD and 384 GB Ram also on Ebay for $2000 USD. Also bought 2 Pro Display XDR. Killer set up
Nice one. I am getting one with 16 cores with 5700xt option and will like use with 6900 xt but the 6900 xt card I am going to buy is saying 322x140x60mm. Will it fit inside Mac Pro ? I cannot find exact dimention of MPX Module anywhere.
I would love to wait on the next M1X macs but I need a new mac now. Not sure if I should consider the current M1 mini or imac over the mac pro 8 core, 32gb ram, 1tb ssd or 27" imac 5k retina, core i9, 10th gen 3.6ghz, 32 gbs ram, 1tb rp 5300? I'm a designer and work with large files in digital creation and some video editing. This is a confusing time for a mac buyer.
I hope your GPU temps are not in celsius, or you're basically melting down your hardware. Btw. what are your max temps on CPU and both GPU's at long max load?
Would you recommend buying the stock mac pro and then upgrading RAM and graphics from third parties? or only upgrade RAM and then choose storage/graphics/processor from Apple? and is it advisable to use two types of RAM from Apple and thirdparty?
Rumor is there is a m1 16-24-32 core 16x pcie card coming that can actually use your current memory and gpus and macs your mac Pro a dual Intel/ m1 machine depending on how you boot up.
Do You have a MacPro with an intel Xeon 8 cores? because the link of the memory from OWC is only for MacPro with 8 cores processor. Thats true? What happens if I have a 16 core xeon? I need another kind of memory?
I don't know if this actually matters but I would have the 5700X below the 580X just so the 5700X has better support under it and the 580X can just sit on 5700X comfortably.
Make a ram disk for your apps browser and scratch disk as it is faster than ssd it will make it snappier than th m1 Macs at everything. Make use of it always.
Ha what timing... my extra 192GB ram turned up today. I'm going to remove the stock 8GB dimms and have my 6 piece matched set run in fast mode. Not sure if it really makes a difference but the store I bought from recommended that. Currently a bit off my goal of cutting 4.5k prores 4444 smoothly natively. It works like butter with proxies at 4.5k prores LT, so will see if the extra ram helps. If not - Afterburner it is.
Update: install was pretty easy. You do have to press worryingly hard to get them to seat fully. I also think I "need" the OWC Accelsior 8TB internal SSD card as my external Promise Raid isn't all that fast.
@@creativeorstrange Not yet, but I haven't made any upgrades since the ram. I think it will require some faster storage - I have an external Promise RAID with spinning disks, but am looking at an OWC card with NVME drives. Specs are: 12 core W5700XT 1TB SSD 192GB ram (aftermarket upgrade) This spec can be pretty much matched with the new iMac, but the good thing with the Mac Pro is I can upgrade it further in time. A workflow I quite like is 4.5K prores LT proxies. That way it's perfectly smooth and I can see exactly the resolution I have to work with. I either then send to resolve to online with the 4444 clips or hit the proxy button in Premiere to export from them there. Overall though the machine has been a godsend. I had an incredibly intense time with work when it arrived and it helped me get through it all.
A tough question for using Maya with w5700x or Vega II on Mac Pro. What do you guys think I should go for in the upgrade? I know the Vega is about $3073 total with tax and the the 5700 is about $1100. Cheaper is definitely better, but I don't want to sacrifice on ability when it comes to rendering (some textures up to 8k), so wondering what anyone thinks, that is if you use Maya (cpu rendering not gpu, the gpu is used mainly for handling the graphics textures) thanks
With programs like Maya, I’d say throw in as much power as you possibly can lol if you have the budget for the Vega GPU then I’d say do that definitely. Especially trying to do 8K stuff? Damn that’s gonna be a resource hog. Also search Apple education store. Don’t need to enter any ID or verify anything. I got $100 off the 5700x lol
@@initialfocus Thanks, I did a bit more research on the topic after my initial note here and went with the Vega II. It took about 3 weeks to get from apple, just got this morning, and also I checked the edu store and had a promotion from Amex for like $200 off there too. So I'm kind of doing a backwards purchase on the Mac Pro to kind of space out the budget since they took away the apple Barclay payments. Thanks again.
Its custom case and mobo. Its not atx case or atx mobo...no mobo or new socket upgrades especially m1 or m2 arm cpus come out for desktops and towers besides macbooks laptops and mini....apple working on smaller less upgradeable compact affordable mainstream tower mac pro.
@Genesis YT let's not fight about it. But visit food bank and watch people who are trying scrape a existence with almost nothing to live on, then ask me again if stuffing 1000s of dollars of never to be used ram is anything less than obscene. Happy New Year, and good luck with you venture.
I don’t tell you how to run a charity, please don’t tell me what I need and don’t need. Just because you don’t require computer power doesn’t make my needs obscene. Have a good day.
I wouldn’t mind either if it was a basic driver install but my worry is that if MacOS does some big update and the GPU driver is incomparable until that company comes out with an update then I could be in a rough stuff. And as my main editing machine that is literally my livelihood Im not taking any chances. If my computer is down 2 days I’m playing catch up for nearly a week. This is why these computers are worth it to pros. If it was just my basic home computer I’d be with you completely but for business work I need as reliable as possible
when is the wheel unboxing video? 😏 jk but on a serious note, have you thought about creating a patreon? hope you are well, enjoying the recent content. (:
i can't justify spending so much money and still having to set up proxies so it can play at normal speed. One would imagine, increased ram and and 24gb memory GPU would do the trick for 6k footage, really makes no sense why it would still lag. i guess this just further proves the point that expensive doesn't always mean better. i was extremely disappointed in these Mac Pro's. We swapped our one for the new the Spec'd out Imac Pro. the performance is way better for a fraction of the price.
That lag is because he is using an external regular hdd that sits in that Drobo. I have 8TB internal storage and my Mac Pro is flying... Also, the base GPU is holding back the W5700X. He should take it out and sell it...
Yeah I’m definitely ordering a 4TB from OWC to install for current projects before moving them to the Drobo to archive as that’s a major bottleneck for timeline playback but I’m curious how would the base GPU be holding back the W5700x if I tell resolve to only use the 5700x then the 580x is handling displays and whatever else besides resolve?
@@initialfocus I didn't actually knew you could do that 😂 I use final cut pro x just a bit. Not that much. I mostly use Logic Pro X and some adobe products like photoshop. But in theory, if the Mac sees the GPU as one (which i thought it was doing that based on other reviews), then yes, i think it holds back the W5700X.
I also upgraded mine to 160GB of RAM and I absolutely love the feeling of NEVER running out of memory!
