While in the past the job of passing on necessary life skills, history and information was a collective effort, today, all of that power has been given to commercial media. In the words of George Gerbner, “Commercial media has eclipsed religion, art, oral traditions and the family as the great storytelling engine of our time. And whoever tells the stories of culture gets to govern human behavior.”
And therein lies the biggest problem with commercial storytelling. Twitter, UA-cam, TikTok, Facebook, all the different news apps and websites, how many times do we check the news on our phones every day? In the past, it took weeks, months or even years to hear bad news from the other side of the world. But today, we have everything at our fingertips. Wars, riots, chaos, scandals, the news feels inescapable.

A year ago April my oldest son came to me and said “Dad, I love you to the moon and back, I’d go to the end of the world for you, but Dad, you gotta stop watching the news. Dad, it’s gonna kill you”.
After almost 2 years my life has COMPLETELY CHANGED. I learned how to play the piano. I SLEEP MUCH MUCH BETTER. I am happier, healthier and am so grateful my son thought enough of me to be HONEST WITH ME, and in the process he showed me that he is indeed, going to be a great dad and a better guy, and I’m okay with that.

I feel like the reason you hear that people were "better off/much happier" in the past is due to the fact that the population wasn't overwhelmed every second of the day with negative events and scenarios to be paranoid or scared of. This video is made for people who cope with reality by telling themselves the world is actually all good and perfect. A convenient untruth to lull oneself into complacency and inaction. You want to fixate desperately on the rare few acts of superficial goodness while pulling the drapes over the tons and tons of the ugly and rotten because you want to take the shortcut into getting the weight off your conscience. After all if the world is all perfect, that means theres nothing to do. So you can sit back and relax. No changes to make, no improvements, no injustices to correct, no people to save.
When in reality if you admitted to yourself that the world is not right, then you'd be forced by conscience to do something. But you don't want to do that, because that requires effort and because that is damaging to your perception of people and the world. So you lie. To yourself and others.

I noticed this when I went off social media, and I haven't went back. Generally, aside from not knowing how to drive, people are amazingly nice every day. The doom and gloom is being fed to us to divide us more. A lot less inner turmoil when you get a clear perspective, not the one being shoved down your throat before you can breathe a word.

    • @arctrix765
      @arctrix765 Рік тому

They don't want to divide us. They want us to believe, that we are devided, because that can distract the vast majority of people from the real problems we have. That is the unbelievably large gap between the rich and poor. Or the weak and powerful. Because of us suffering through their propaganda to make themselves more money, while also exploiting other people, they manage to stay in power. We wouldn't have most problems in society we currently have, when those people could be disempowered and this power would then be given to regular people.
Then the people could be presented with "REAL" news, which dosn't benefit the publisher, but just the normal people by showing them what is really happening. App publisher wouldn't solely rely on on profits, but also on moral to make their apps, which leads to the extinction of such questionable business practices called algorithms. Also war would be unthinkable in this imaginary world.

I suffer from mean world syndrome. My therapist calls it borderline personality disorder.
I don't let it control me by smoking marijuana. Which in turn makes me controlled because without a university degree I am doomed to never have a disposable income.
I don't think there is some overshadowing organisation that does this. But I do agree that we continue to propel it as individuals.
But maybe the worst part is that employers want to control their employees. They want better profits and they can definitely get it by distributing catchy slogans that obscure the truth.
Once one does it, they all have to. That is how we propel this as individuals. Greed and our interpretation of "fairness".
Be careful of any place of employment that boasts a "family" style environment. They use your guilt to make you exceed your limits and they aren't going to pay for the therapy. Physical or otherwise.

People are telling me that I am getting uninformed about the world by not watching the news. I can just say two things to them.
1.) My mental health is in much better place since I stopped watching the news. Having depression because of the trauma I experienced is bad already. Do I really need to be reminded that there are people who are having it worse than me every day? Some people are telling this to us, not realising that it make us feel worse and not better. Instead of being happy the things are not worse for us, we become sad because we have compassion to this complete strangers we can not help.
2.) If the news are important, they will find a way towards me. They always do. If the war breaks down, you can be certain I will know it in three hours max.
The fact that the news are triggering to so many other people and not just just me is quite dangerous when you think just a little about it. What if something really important happens, matter of life and death and we are not having anyone to tell us that on time? What if we decide to vote for someone we would never vote for if we knew something really important, because we were ill informed, so that person becomes the next Hitler? What if there was something said on the news, warning us about some quite dangerous people, and we did not know it because no one told us? This things probably won't happen to the most of us that don't watch the news, but there will always be someone who will tragically stay uninformed.

Great Video. I am a subscriber from India, and although I did not think of the "social media giving more negative over positive news" thing, I did realise that it was a huge distraction for me. I only use three social media apps - UA-cam, Reddit and WhatsApp. The first two were very addictive, due to the recommendations page. I don't use TikTok because it's banned in India (this 🤡 moment was unlocked 2 years ago) (tbh I never used it, even when it wasn't banned). I have been somewhat successful in beating this addiction, I installed a chrome extension that hides all the recommendations, even the explore tab, whenever I open YT for no particular reason, I can only see if I have any notifications from any subscribed channels.
07:08 I am not really much into consuming any news content, I only see one yt channel for news every Sunday - he mentions the normal news (which usually contains some negative or bad incident), some weird/hilarious incidents that can only happen in my country 🗿, and the positive news - usually about steps taken to reduce global warming, how some people helped the needy or how some people came up with innovative solutions to problems. And I have to admit, I am into the normal news almost always, and that makes me feel somewhat guilty☹.
