At long last, Winners & Losers has returned! Finally it's time for CITIES, after many years of comments suggesting it as a topic. This one was surprisingly difficult, given how loose the definition of a city can be, and the inconsistencies that this causes.

Wish for mars
But it has only been 2 months since his last video
See y'all next milenium for the tenth episode!
Ok
@@chrisv2107 Actually, his last few videos were released only two months apart.
Miss you, he doesn’t release frequently but when he does it’s always a hit.
I think one thing was wrong though. In Safest cities, he didn't go by crime rate but by some Safe Cities Index including "digital security, environmental security" etc. Etc. Most people when talking about safety mean "Am I going to get shot robbed or beat up?"
I believe cities in the Gulf are the safest by this criteria, like Dubai, Riyadh, etc. Since basically every citizen is wealthy and every non-citizen gets deported upon suspicion of a crime so the crime rate is really low

Episode 8: States of Canada
0:15: 🏙 This video discusses the challenges of comparing cities and the different ways to define a city.
3:32: 🌍 The video discusses the concept of the lowest population cities and the exceptions for city-states and capital cities.
7:10: 🌍 Bangladesh, Tanta (Egypt), and Macau (China) are among the most densely populated cities in the world.
10:55: 💼 New York City is ranked as the top global city due to its financial capital, cultural significance, and research facilities.
14:11: 🌍 The highest homicide rate in the world is in Tijuana, Mexico, with most crimes occurring in rough neighborhoods.
17:57: 🌍 Australia has the most entries in a small town in Kazakhstan, the least polluted capital cities, and the most livable cities in the world.
21:37: 🌍 Asian cities dominate the rankings for best airports and public transport, with Tokyo's Haneda airport and Hong Kong's transit system leading the way.
Recap by Tammy AI
Good recap. Thanks Tammy AI!
Thanks for saving my time! amazing summary tool I love the time stamps!
Really? I don't think a city is called a seti! I may be able to help you with correct information, in this case! Didn't you noticed during the making of. The video? Correction is not easy, so if errors are present, don't post it!
actually european cities dominate in airports and public transports
@@grrumakemeangry Someone's mad.
God damn, Tokyo making it good on every list bro.
For a city that huge, they built Tokyo extremely well efficient 👏
If you ever been in Tokyo, you quickly realize why.
It definitely deserves it.
Tokyo is too big and even causing some problems😳
Tokyo might be over crowded to hell , but its such a beautiful and efficient city, its like one of the most perfect big cities there is. Im so sad as an American that we cant even have infrastructure in big cities as advanced as Japan, Korea and China. Proper structuring, effective crime reduction, effective cleaning programs and public transportation that links smaller areas to larger hubs, takes years to get even a fraction of any of that over here
I remember being around 9 or 10 when the first episode of this series came out. Really helped me grow my interest in geography! Happy to see you’re still working on these kind of videos, too! Your channel is a prime example of quality over quantity.
SAMMEEEE
Honestly with how big Tokyo is, I really am amazed at how it is nearly always at the top of the rankings.
This may be one of the best infotainment video I've watched in a year or two. You've gained a subscriber for a lifetime. Thank you for making this very in-depth video ☮️
Regardless of the picture used for show São Paulo is actually from Santos (a important costal city in the state of São Paulo) this video is really great. I wasn't notified about this one but I'm very happy that we had our cities video. Thank you WonderWhy
He doesn't upload often, but when he does, it always a banger.
Some of the sources raised eyebrows, especially the ones that discuss public transportation. I personally lived in Tokyo, Hong Kong, and Toronto. Also go to NYC and London quite often. I disagree with how they say HK has better public transportation compared to Tokyo but still understand it. But Toronto better than Tokyo for public transits ? That’s just not gonna be true in 100 years.
What a great start of the new year
Thank you WonderWhy for the amazing video as always
Ι love his little recaps of previous pieces of information throughout the video. It shows that he's really intestered in teaching us, instead of simply arranging facts.
Great work as always.
Hi Kazooya here, as always great video and I'm always looking forward to more. Also I get to hear the lovely sounds of Dhaka's traffic again which is always appreciated ;)
Considering its size and density it’s amazing that Tokyo is so safe. I have been there a few times and have never felt threatened by anything or anyone. Wonderful city. And the most Michelin stars ⭐️
Honestly Japan is crazy dude. Feels like a whole another world

Wow.
Amazing video.
Worth to wait after three years.

Can't wait for episode 6 in 2026! Seriously though glad to see you've posted another banger for us.
lol
wow, the guy that got me into geography all those years ago posting a new video, awesome !
37.4 million people is actually the metropolitan area not the city proper and is the kanto area and includes places quite detached from the urban area
After 5 years it has came I have been waiting so long
I been waiting for this episode for years thank you
Really happy to see you back!
Happy new year wonder why! I am a big fan of your channel. Next; please do continents OR Islands.
I'm honestly shocked that Tokyo is only at #7 at best public transit... Having used it on multiple trips I'm always massively impressed. Should be a huge indicator at how good the top 5 are.
Tokyo suffers because of closing very early (New York is 24/7 for a decent amount of the network), and having a segmented network. In terms of actual connectivity Tokyo is second to none, but that’s not the only measure of excellency for transit.
Considering he said it has a population of 37 million, he's including all of these prefectures in his definition of Tokyo: Tokyo, Kanagawa, Saitama, Chiba, Tochigi, Gunma, Ibaraki, Yamanashi. And if you include all of those places that aren't Tokyo, public transit isn't so amazing (still good though).
@@ketchup901 it is amazing
I would look at it from the opposite way and consider that chart/source completely untrustworthy. I personally lived in Tokyo, Hong Kong, and Toronto. I disagree with how they say HK has better public transportation compared to Tokyo but still understand it. Toronto better than Tokyo? That’s just not gonna be true in 100 years.
@@jhca4671 Yes, it is amazing if you're actually talking about Tokyo. But if you're talking about all those places around Tokyo which are not Tokyo, it's not amazing anymore.
Starts the year with a new Winners & Losers episode? 2023 is going to be a good year.
Fun fact: the region with the highest Michelin stars per capita is Spain’s Basque Country (33 stars for a 3.1 million population, 1 per 94.000 inhabs). Go to San Sebastian or anywhere else in Euskadi and you’ll be amazed. And I am not Basque myself, but these guys are the best foodies.

Happy New Year WonderWhy. Great video also. Been waiting for this one.
Love From Bahamas
I’ve been awaiting for cities episode for YEARS
1:26 this photo is from Santos, a city near the city of São Paulo (1 hour by driving), but on the coast, and that is not part of São Paulo's Metropolitan Area. Santos has the busiest port of Brazil.
As a Canadian, the, supposed, most liveable cities have housing prices rarely below 900k so I don't know how you can afford to live in the most liveable canadian cities.
What a great start to the new year
Amazing video. Happy new year!
Man just casually brings back an 8 year old series like it's nothing. Also, nice job using Japan flag as a pie chart
10:05Side Note: They’re aren’t particularly that many kangaroos on kangaroo island. It was named this because an explorer went atop a hill and saw many kangaroos. However, that was just a coincidence.
Wonderful way to start the new year!
This series is great
They ranked Los Angeles as the 18th safest city…… my 🧢 detector going off

There was a theory that Skytrax was tired of Singapore winning the best airport so they just decided to switch things up a bit.
Great video with a lot of informative stuffs! A little correction tho, 22:41 Singapore is in South East Asia not East Asia
16:19 the moment I saw D.C. and NYC on that list for safest I had to laugh as someone who been to both
don't take it seriously. This data won't make changes to the fact.

Russian, from Moscow here. The "top 5 safest cities" is particularly funny in omitting mine. A Canadian here, in the comments to a urban cycling related video, once admitted he only had 5 bicycles stolen in his life, which he consideres lucky and safe. Just to let you know: i got no bicycle stolen whatsoever. I'm constantly doing crazy things like forgetting to strap on my bike to a pole for couple hours, leaving my gopro just hanging in the wardrobe, leaving the car unlocked and sometimes running (i.e. with they key in) unattended. Never once got anything stolen*.
The covid delivery boys on those chinese e-bikes - even they let them unchained for 5 minutes they need to go inside and get the order to the appartment door.
Just to give you an idea of what a safe city is like.
* - Almost fergot. Ok, 20 years ago my mom got her car hijacked, and 10 years ago another unsuccessfull attempt.
Yeah I live in Beijing and walk around late at night with no fear, same for riding the subway or leaving stuff at my table while going to the bathroom at cafes. Love it; couldn't do this in big US cities (I'm from the US).
It annoys me when studies conflate "unsafe" with "violent crime." Far more people die or are seriously injured in car accidents than from violent crime.
The safest cities in the world are probably those with the fewest drivers on the road.
11:55 That's the City of Oxford - NOT part of London. It's roughly 60 miles (around 100 km) north-west of the British capital.
Yeah I noticed that 😂
For crime, the homicide rate has a massive correlation with the availability of weapons/ guns. Also worth mentioning that Mexico is suffering an ongoing 15-year drug war, like a de facto civil war, with 85,000 casualties so far and counting.
19:52 good to see my hometown make an appearance! Calgary is truly a great place to call home.
I wish I could go during this vacation...
I want to visit Canada in the future!
see you guys next year
I clicked on the video hoping for my city to show up (Vancouver) and when looking at the chapters I was fairly certain Vancouver would make the list for most liveable, though housing is expensive
I was just in Vancouver for 3 days until yesterday! Amazing place to live, scenery looks beautiful, great food.
at 1:24, that´s not São Paulo city, that's Santos, a coastal city totally separate from São Paulo, with a different metropolitan region.
Shoutout to "Albarat dels Tarongers", a random village in Valencia, Spain, which has one of the best air qualities lol
Just a heads up, Pateros is legally not a city, but a municipality, though could become one legally. There are laws and criteria for how a municipality should become a city, this includes the balance of: Land, Population, and Economy, likewise this criteria also suits for the creation of Provinces, Municipalities, Barangays (barrios), and other formal and informal divisions. I just feel like Pateros falls on the economy part though. It is also the smallest in terms of land, somewhere in between 1-2 km2.
3:08 This picture is not a tokyo, this is seoul, s.korea
It was an interesting and informative video👍🏻
I found it funny when he showed all of the comments and suggestions from many years ago in the intro 😂
An important thing to remember when it comes to cities with the highest homicide rate is that they are all from country's with a police force developed enough to take down such data. Cities like Mogadishu, Damascus, Baghdad, etc. would be much more dangerous as a whole.
For such a small country (population wise). Australia definitely impressed in a lot of these.
I’m surprised that we didn’t feature more in the livability rankings. A few years ago there were a number of rankings that would switch between Sydney and Melbourne for the top spot.
@@lamsmiley1944 Most of those liveability rankings hammered Melbourne and Sydney due to COVID and Australia's lockdowns hahah give it another year and Melbourne will likely be up the top again
In my unbiased opinion I think Melbourne is the most based city to ever exist
This post was made by the Melbourne gang
To be fair, a lot of the Australian cities in air quality were small towns of 500 in Tasmania.
I’m more surprised about Japan. Their population is pretty large when comparing to European countries but still consistently ranks amongst the best in rankings. Pretty insane if you ask me.
THE LIGHTNING ROUND with Ross was perfect! haha
Finally a new episode
After watching this video, I feel better about living in Tokyo.
13:29
Every Mexican watching this video: My time to shine ✨👹🤑
If you do another episode, I think it'd be cool if you compared 'territories' of the world; things like Puerto Rico, BIOT, Norfolk Island, etc.
Basically, places that aren't considered to be countries, but aren't full parts of whichever country they're in
They can be interesting little (or big) things and it seems like a topic that may fit well with Winners and Losers
18:01 also, all of the Australian entries on this list are cities/towns in Tasmania, which has the cleanest air and water in the country :)
My new years resolution is to survive till part 6
Fun fact, more kangaroos live in Australia, than humans do... even though that is counting the total population of 4 species of kangaroos and combining them together, while there is just one human species.
In total, there are 26 million humans and 46 million kangaroos, that live in Australia.
Really great video❤❤❤
Very informative video!
