I'm still rocking a G9 for several years after over a decade of GAS (Gear Acquisition Syndrome). Perfect? No, but it does so many things well. Panasonic has emerged as a power player in a market that was Nikon/Canon ten years ago. I'd like to see a progression of the G9 that offers what we love about that camera in a smaller package.

The Lumix G9 is unquestionably an excellent hybrid camera for a bunch of applications. It excels in action and casual photography, and video recording in good light. For me, it’s one of the most comfortable and ergonomic mirrorless cameras I’ve ever had. Thank you Panasonic for the awesome improvements of this camera thru numerous firmware updates. Nice to see Jordan take the positive stance for once! For the price of Panasonic M43 cameras, they deliver great value and image quality. My use is primarily still photos. I wouldn't want a bigger FF system at this stage in my life. I have no problems focusing my G9, even on fast moving birds. You just need to learn how to set it up, and then spend the time practicing. Oh, and I also own the dreaded G100 but it's a great photo camera too, especially when matched with the 15mm f/1.7. Might try the 9mm next. Thanks guys!

With Panasonic there's always been a choice of focus modes for stills and video and it is largely a matter of choosing the right one. One size does not fit all. The default video focus is deliberately slower for smoother transitions, but that can be changed.
When switching from stills to video (G9 here) there's a lot of changes to be made, and changed back, like mic level, Photostyle (cine, customised), focus mode (customised), etc, etc. The Red record button in PASM and the -M Creative Movie mode, are not the same at all. So I save my video preferences into a Custom slot.

I'm writing this comment in hopes that Panasonic sees this for their research:
As an S1H and GH5s user who's been purely Panasonic since the DVX100b (with one exception when the Canon 7D came out), I've made a promise to myself that I will not invest in another mirrorless body that doesn't have PDAF or something AT LEAST as reliable and convenient to use.
I can make anything I want with my CURRENT camera combination, so it doesn't matter how many stops of DR or how many FPS you can squeeze into a mirrorless body. I don't care anymore. The only thing I truly care about right now is RELIABLE video autofocus, as it allows me to be more flexible with my shot selection as a single camera operator, and I will definitely move on to another camera company within the next few years if you don't take video AF seriously.
Your cameras are absolutely amazing! This is your ONLY weak point, and PLEASE stop ignoring it.

The G9 is the best platform I think they've put out. Add the battery grip to it and you can literally shoot photos all day. I've never had it overheat and I live in Texas. Not as bulky as the GH6, but still has some great mid tier video features especially with the Paid Upgrade. 10 Bit VLog (l) on a sub $1000 (used) camera is unheard of in the market. Once Panny figures out phase detect and real dual gain ISO, I really don't see a reason to switch out.

I've been a Panasonic user since 2009, starting with the GH1. During that time, I've owned a number of Nikon cameras, mostly full frame, and a couple of Olympus cameras. As time has passed, the other cameras have simply faded into the shadows of the past. Panasonic cameras are simply the most user friendly. The only thing I sometimes miss is the Nikon D810 at ISO 64, with its insanely workable files and beautiful colours.
However... where's the GX8 II? GH5 II tech would be fine with me. In spite of its rather harsh limitations (no IBIS during video, shutter shock, 2.5 mm mic jack, no headphone jack, SD card at the battery compartment...), it's such a fantastic camera. It even shoots beautiful video in spite of its limitations in that area. I own and use 2 x GX8 and would buy two properly specced Mark II over any other camera.
And please give us a G100 Mark II with IBIS and no crop. It's such a beautiful little camera with a really nice viewfinder. I would love a Mark II to pieces.

Panasonic had two great cinema cameras, the Eva-1 and the Varicam. Sadly, I think they've dropped out of that market. I remember when the Eva-1 was rumored and expectations were through the roof. And the Varicam with the dual ISO was a camera used on a number of high profile films and TV series.

I have been using Panasonic cameras since I had a GH4 then upgraded to a GH5 and now have a GH6 as well.
Things I like: I love the improved color science over time with these (especially moving away from the orange like skin tones of the GH4 to the no longer reddish skin tones of the GH6, which I find a bit more natural looking.
Menu layouts are easy to use and I like the ergonomics of the camera and how most buttons can have a custom function assigned to them.
Focus transition is very useful to have as it allows you to nail consistent focus pulls with AF lenses.
    Anamorphic with de-squeeze
    V-Log with LUT display
RAW video output - Although I really wish Panasonic hadn't have left out 4K resolution RAW and ProRes in their latest GH6 firmware update.
Firmware updates even when a newer camera in the line up comes out. They even made the GH5 II so it could have updates that the GH5 couldn't get due to hardware limitations.
Video assist features like waveforms, zebras, IBIS, peaking, levels, monochrome live view, night view etc...
    USB-C battery charging/power
Dual native and Dual ISO on Panasonic cameras that improved the video dynamic range.
IBIS display on screen so you can see how much the camera is shaking
Open gate full sensor recording with onscreen markers for different aspect ratios for cropping in later in editing.
    Things I don't like:
GH6 photo dynamic range at lower ISOs isn't great, despite the higher megapixel count and high res modes being better than other MFT cameras out there.
Auto focus for video isn't the best, its improved on the GH6 and while I don't rely on it, I would like it to be up to par with Sony and Canon.
Lack of Panasonic 100mm+ macro lenses with IS as that is a lens type and focal length that could be very useful for insect photography and videos.
Focus peaking doesn't always work so well for certian subjects. I use my GH6 to take videos of landscapes, insects and plants and I find it doesn't always show peaking on the subject and I can't always tell if it is in focus or not
3:56 - There is a rumoured S5H, possibly a S5 sized body with S1H features. I would like the color science of the GH6 in it as I think the colors are improved and there is no longer the reddish skin tones.
9:45 Me. I currently only use Olympus lenses on my GH6 (12-40 and 60mm macro), until I finally get my pre ordered 9mm f/1.7. I use them because compared to the Panasonic 12-35 the Oly 12-40 is sharper edge to edge where I have noticed, especially at 12mm the 12-35 is noticeably soft, especially when doing landscape shots. I also use the Olympus 60mm as its currently the longest MFT macro lens. If Panasonic had a sharp MFT 100mm macro with IS, I'd get one straight away as that is one of the few lenses that seem neglected in the lens line up and I sometimes find the 60mm a bit short and a little tricky to use without built in IS which wouldn't be compatible with Panasonic bodies.

One thing I haven't heard much of, a good and bad, is the lack luster pre-set profiles and the immense ability to modify those settings in the menus. This has been a panasonic thing for so long. I got my HPX-170 and after reading the manual, I was able to manipulate the settings and get a better image. It's not just my own ego clouding my take on the results, as the company I worked for always asked why my camera looked better than their HPX-170s and had me copy the settings to theirs. I rented a DVX-200 and did the same thing, but the improvement I got was even more noticeable, in sharpness, color and AF. I was able to take a GH4 and push the noise out of the mids more into the shadows, increase DR, and get it to look ok at iso 1250, instead of 800 which seemed to be the limit before. Put those in my GH5 and got great results too. Why on earth some random dude with a user manual can consistently find a better setting than a team of company engineers is beyond me, but that's how it's gone. So thumbs down for the pre-set profiles, big thumbs up for being given the ability to do so much customization.

I upgraded from the gh5 to the s1 this year and I couldn't be happier. I find the s1 takes great photos and getting use to the way it captures raw took a while, but what a great camera. Even using only GOP video options it's amazing and I personally would probably not use autofocus if they bring PD to the next S-series camera so PD doesn't bother me. Unless I start vlogging haha. Would definitely love faster frame rates of 120pfs 4k and no crop on 4k 60 or 120 if they come out with that in the next release. Holding onto my gh5 as a b cam until a new s-series camera comes out. Props to Lumix. My favourite image quality of the different cameras I've tried and edited. Best for firmware, and having constant streams and q&a is beyond what other companies do. Props to DPReview as well. Love the channel

I’m been a Panasonic shooter for nearly 8 years. I started with the G7 after selling my Canon EOS T6 and then upgraded to a GX9. Now I own the GX9, G95 and the S5. Currently debating whether or not to sell the S5 because I have the G95 but for now I’m holding on to it. The S5 represents the best bang for the buck when it comes to having a solid 24MP full frame camera for photography.
I’m a street, travel, and documentary photographer who does a little photojournalism when the opportunity arises. Video is not my thing although I added the S5 to my kit to be able to do video should I need to. Hence why I’m evaluating the G95 for the same reasons. As a photographer, I like the ergonomics of the Panasonic cameras. Like you said, they’re not sexy at all. It’s all about industrial design and functionality. You’d think they were a German company for that reason alone. 🤣
That said, I don’t really their autofocus as a problem because for how I shoot especially between f5..6-f11 what I need in focus always is. What’s I’d love to see from Panasonic is an update to the GX series. A GX9-2 or GX10 would be great but to your point in this video it seems they’ve abandoned that line of cameras. Now when I want sexy in a camera body I shoot my Fujifilm X-Pro3. It has all the sexy one would need in a camera body.

I've used the S1 and S1R since they first came out. The firmware updates have improved the cameras considerably since the early days of their release. I never minded the weight as the controls are well placed due to that extra size. The colours and the flexibility within the raw files is great. I'm not a videographer, so the AF is less of a concern for me. However, from a business viewpoint, they probably need to get that side of their G and S systems sorted because Panasonic and 'bad AF' have become synonymous. This is a shame as the cameras have so many features and components that make them stand out from the competition.

Biggest wish - that Panasonic continues to support stills photography in m43!
Future models I would be interested in -

I picked up and S5 (got a great deal on a brand new body) and it's great for a stills shooter. The single point AF is super fast, the sigma i-series are really nice and the sensor produces lovely results. Great crop options, good menu's, tweakable jpeg options, the back screen is awesome and despite the fact the EVF resolution is bemoaned by some, there is no issue at all, and the PIP for manual focus is excellent and super clear and sharp. I moved from having used Fuji's since the X10 owning a few different bodies (x100f, x-pro1, x-t2), and after loving the photo output of the X-Pro1 (which I rebought) I can say the S5 with the Sigma 45mm 2.8, which can be picked up at crazy prices used, produces wonderful photos. In fact I'd say the Sigma approach matches a lot of the things Fuji users hold dear (smooth sharpness, nicely built, compact metal lenses). And from what I've seen, those S-Pro lenses, zooms and primes, look incredible (although far too big for me).

A while ago I tested all hi-res full-frame cameras for a few weeks to replace my X-H1 set for outdoor fashion shoots. The S1R blew my mind. Fantastic sensor, easily the best IBIS, the best EVF (together with the SL2) esp. when you wear glasses and great ergonomics when you have to work with them all day. This is imo the best professional grade full-frame hi-res stills camera for everything but fast action sports. Except for two things at the time: it lacked Profoto support (now fixed) and no Capture One support for tethering. Whenever that comes, I’ll switch right away. Their S Pro lenses are gorgeous for photos and video alike (not the 1.8 24 and 35 for photos though) and you’ll always have the Summicron SLs too if you need that extra notch. Today pre-owned S1 and S1R are a steal.

Pretty sure if you want the 47MP sensor in a small Panasonic body you want the Q2... as 28mm is a great focal length for video...
Oh and on firmware updates my GH5 is pretty much abandonware, just some simple things like more anamorphic ratios would be so handy... and trivial...
Plus you do get that everyone except Canon and Sony use the same processors in their cameras (although the delayed release of the GH6, by what, 2 years, may mean it's on a previous generation). They all use Socionext Milbeaut SoCs (in the unlikely case you weren't aware), although the camera companies give them names to suggest they are their own chips...
    Milbeaut aka...
    Olympus Truepic
    Pentax Prime
    Panasonic Venus Engine
    Leica Maestro
    Fuji X-processor
    Nikon Expeed
    Sigma True
GoPro certainly in the Hero 8 (Socionext had a competition to win some), I'd assume the 9/10 too, maybe others...

And I'm talking about continuous AF in videos for sure.

I personally think the Panasonic should bring in a PDAF focus system in video like the other main brands for its full frame camera. Everything else is great about the camera. For people who want the camera for dual purpose pro photo and video, full frame sensor is the way to go, as photo quality is simply superior to m43. Add the amazing video performance and the S5 is a great camera. Just need PDAF to be perfect, although the S5 is still a good camera.

I'm primarily a Nikon shooter, going back to film days. I got into the mft kick some years back using a LX-100 as a street camera. Then I "upgraded" to a GX85 so I could have more lens options. Then I made a mistake of moving up to an Olympus M1 mkii which is a nice camera but for me ended up defeating the purpose of a compact camera. I got into mft for size and found the Olympus to be a couple of mm away from my Z7. Yes the zoom lens sizes are quite different, but I shoot mostly primes with my full frame cameras. I have been through a lot of gear over the years, most have been retired to a shelf like Knick knacks. I still shoot weddings and events with a pair of D750s. I use the Z7 for portraits and landscapes and the gx85 for street photography. I'll never own the Z9 because it's just too large. Maybe a camera with Z9 guts and no built-in grip? Z8? Sony does but at this stage in my life I'm not changing all the glass I own. Once in a while I'll pick up my LX-100 because it's fun to use. Sadly, the Olympus is collecting dust. My apologies for being long winded.

The S5 is underrated as a stills camera. Single focus is fast and accurate, files from the 24mp sensor are indestructible and it has neat features, like back button AF working with the lens in manual focus mode and 96mp high definition capability, which is great for interiors and still life. As someone who uses manual focus lenses for video exclusively, none of the S5 downsides affect me. Current Panasonic UK deals strongly suggest something new is in the pipeline, because S5 prices are crazy cheap for such a high spec'd camera.

Together with the 14-140mm lens this covers all my needs. I find the play of the bayonet annoying. The diopter wheel is very difficult to adjust. The lens hood of the 100-400mm is defective. I have yet to find an affordable lens hood to replace mine.

I have been using G Series since it's inception, and in particular the GH series. The cameras have improved with each model and I specifically shoot Aussie Rules Football, Surfing, and Bird/Wildlife. My main "go to" lens is the Leica 200mm/f2.8, but have been hoping for years that Panasonic would push the envelope a bit further and release a 300mm/f2.8! I know that Olympus has a f4 version, but as you state there are compatibility issues which affect the performance and therefore the reason I use the system in the first place. Also the lens needs to be f2.8 for low light use and the ability to AF with converters. The physical size of the lens would need to be similar to the old Nikkor F 300mm/f2.8. Now unfortunately I hear that Panasonic is going to ditch still image models altogether and concentrate on video centric models. The annoying part is they are discontinuing the awesome 200mm and blaming poor sales as the reason to do all this. The reason for poor sales is that they missed the mark with the reach of that lens. You cannot rely on a 400mm/f2.8 for surf and wildlife and most arena type sports. If they had made a 600mm/f2.8 equivalent prime lens that could use the converters too, it would have completed the reason for G Series in the first place . . . size and versatility! The 100-400/f4-6.3 is a very good seller, but it does not have the speed and sharpness at the top end, I know as I pretty much own every g series lens. Now obviously proving to be a bad investment for still photography. Keep up the great reviews guys, have been a long time viewer / subscriber.

Having discussed the issue of incompatible lens based image stabilization with Panasonic their answer is that since a Micro Four Thirds standards body exists if Panasonic and Olympus got together to decide on a specification outside the body it would be an anti-trust violation. The only way such a standard will ever exist is if the non Panasonic and Olympus members get together and write the spec but these members show no inclination to do this.

Have you not wondered why a Panasonic stabilised lens on an Olympus body stabilises better than the other way around? It's the practically undocumented "Olympus Dual IS", a bit of both OIS+IBIS. (see Gordon Laing's 2020 review of the Olympus 100-400). It's not up to Sync-IS or Dual-IS but better than OIS or IBIS alone. Put your ear to it and hear both stabilisers whirring. With an Olympus-IS lens the Panasonic body will use just that that (see Panasonic lens compatibility chart). Now the E-M5ii (which can Sync-IS) does not provide all the stabiliser options of the E-M1ii, but if you set "Use Lens IS" Off, it does it, and so does the PEN-F.
