BAD: the RF lens lineup. Costs a fortune. Very limited non-L options. No wide angle primes. Own an R6, and getting super frustrated with the lack of new lens offerings.
Now if only this had been a drinking game! Very fair and honest review guys. I own the R5 and as a photographer first, it's my favorite all time Canon. If I ever waffled (and I probably won't) it would be to Nikon. I think they are really upping their game and I have always liked their image quality. Be well.
I'm a Nikonian, and really appreciated my friends giving me a look at the future as they all bought R5s for wildlife/bird photography. I, as you, was on the fence with sticking with them for sports/wildlife/action. I stayed around longer than most (not all) of my fellow DSLRers who refused to buy in the the Z line-up until the Z9. Then there was the 400mm f/2.8 TC, then the 800mm f/6.3 and suddenly, all is well in Nikon land for now. I can honestly say the Z9 was worth the wait. There are planned firmware updates coming that will continue to broaden the cameras appeal and AF abilities. I picked up my DSLR once since the Z9's arrival 5 months ago (for landscape) and for Wildlife/sports/action it's been, thus far, a completely different, and mostly welcomed experience.
the only reason i’m switching from Canon 7D Mark II to a proper full frame Sony A7IV is because they haven’t given third party lens manufacturers their RF mount details (or wtv the term is) I just prefer going to a mount system that has an infinite level of lens types than staying stuck with the first party which cost an arm and a leg.
After shooting NIKON for 23 years, I switched to CANON after NIKON dropped the ball with the D6! I was still shooting with my D4S and was ready to up grade but Noooooo! I switched to CANON with the 1DXMK3 and have been over the moon…and a few years later, NIKON drops the Z9! 🙄 I didn’t upgrade to the R3 because, well…it’s not a flagship body and my 1DXMK3 is still putting in the WORK! All that being said, CANON is going to have to put away the “Cripple Hammer” AND throw everything plus the kitchen sink at the R1!!! 🤷🏾♂️ I don’t have to shoot mirrorless, but I’d like to…on CANON if they would just stop getting in their own way!

Excited for when you do Fujifilm. APSC lineup is great. I would hope they would try some more rangefinder designs and more functional instax products. The medium format scene might get more competition. But their lenses are still behind in terms of looks, design, range and leading in terms of f-stop compared to full frame.
I love you guys. You are able to be both one of the most honest and informative Camera review channels AND the most entertaining. I am a photog who is dipping his toe into filmmaking, and have been shooting Sony e-mount since it was only for APS-C, but I still watch your reviews of other cameras to get a sense of how things are evolving and what's available from the "competition." I'm glad that Canon and Nikon are both putting out good cameras, as it forces Sony to keep innovating and improving, too. More competition is good for us consumers.
Canon has rested on their lapels for a while. Maybe since 2010. I left in 2015. Saw that other brands supported all their consumers with more affordable offerings. 35, 50, 85mm. Canon only refreshes $$$$ lenses. And the dynamic range is still years behind. I have no problem keeping up with my 2011 D600 24MP sensor. Sure the R5 is good but I was never in the market to spend $4500 USD for features found in the $2000 market. Then theres the lenses. The 85mm 1.8 was released in 1993. Never was updated. Horrible fringing. All their 50mms were rickety. Never addressed their consumer lenses.
I used the 1.8/85 with the 6D for several years for portraits. It is sharp wide open. The purple fringing and the Longitudinal chromatic abberation (LOCA) is due to the insufficient color correction in the short wavelength spectrum, which was not predominantly necessary to correct when it was developed in analog times. So, this was a very good lens: cheap, fast, sharp, small. Nothing to complain.
I made a swap from Sony A9 to the R5 and the bugs on the R5 have reminded me of Sony in 2016. Still don’t feel the AF in the R5 is as intelligent than the old A9. Agree with the need to manipulate the case mode…it’s exhausting. Thanks for the video.
Funny how everyone thought that since the R5 shoots 20fps, it should be a competitor to the A9, but with more MP. But it's not close due to the lack of stacked sensor. Two completely different cameras. It's like consumers thinking slapping a 4K badge on anything instantly gives that thing cinematic quality.
You Absolutely Right Sir Canon needs to work on New APC Line with dual Card Slot and better Battery .As Canon 90D was good , Lenses are very expensive and they need to come with affordable lenses
Dear Alex , Most of APSC Camera are for Beginners or Semi Professional .So these needs to be priced as per consumer Requirement. What is Fun in Buying a lenses which is 2-3 Expensive than the Body right .If such is the case no one will buy such Commodity.So as consumer it our duty to communicate to the manufacturer.
As an EOS R owner, one of the most frustrating things for me is the lack of 3rd party support for the RF mount - I moved from EF -> RF and I miss being able to consider Sigma/Tamron/etc lenses as solid alternatives to Canon's own lineup. Yes I have an EF-RF adapter, but the added barrel length makes them a pain in the ass to use.
The last Canon camera I used was a AE1 it was pretty sweet.

I loved all my Canons, but I recently switched from Canon APS-C to Fuji X for my first mirrorless because of their unclear perspective for APS-C. I don't want to go full-frame because of the weight, size and price of the lenses. Fuji's Lenses are really unexpectedly perfect for my needs. Small, light and tack sharp. And the fourth generation X-Sensor is excellent. Low noise, great raw files. I'm very happy with my choice.
Fuji is a great choice (likely best) for the aspc format but I find their lenses pretty expensive. Yes they have excellent build quality, but they need more affordable options in my opinion. They opened up their lenses to 3rd parties, so I hope that enabled more affordable lenses. Their future is looking bright.

@@numerous_use True! The Fujinons are not exactly cheap. But the price is fair for the quality. Still I'm looking forward for more sigma and other 3rd party options. The three sigmas that are already on the market cost almost half compared to the fujinons with almost identical IQ. Very nice! And if your budget is very tight you can get some excellent - manual - 3rd-party primes.

Their FF bodies are the same size or even smaller than Fuji's high end APS-C bodies. And there are plenty of small and light primes from Sony, Sigma, Tamron, and Samyang/Rokinon. Many at similar prices to APS-C lenses, and some cheaper AND higher quality than Fuji's own lenses.

@@BlueBomberTurbo Yes some sony bodies are comparable in size to fuji apsc bodies and sure there are plenty of cheap small and light primes for sony e mount, but when it comes to zoom lenses there is just no comparison. Apsc zooms are always going to be smaller and lighter and generally speaking cheaper. In a relatively small shoulder bag (approx. 20x25x25 cm) I have my fuji camera and 3 lenses covering everything from 15 to 450 mm (FF equivalent). Try to do the same with a FF system.
Here is the thing: Canon is in the unique position of the company that has the know-how and the financial resources to create the perfect hybrid camera with the best ergonomics and specifications but they will not do it because... they want to sell a separate line of video-only cameras.
Bought my first full frame camera few months back. Lack of native lens options was the only reason why I bought the Sony A7iv instead of the R5. Wish Canon had some moderately priced quality prime lenses like 35 1.4, 24 1.4 or even a 85 1.4( 85 1.2 is amazing but it's too expensive and overkill for me).
The trouble with Canon is that they are in love with their cripple hammer. They're crippling cameras for no good reason and they're still selling 12 year old DSLR tech (Canon EOS 4000 with digic 4 processors). It seems to me that they don't have a long term lower to mid market strategy. The M series seems to have been killed off completely. I am not holding my breath waiting for exciting news from them.
Canon’s low end cameras are designed for consumers that shop in big box retailers or are looking for a deal online. The best buy would be a Canon 5diii. A nice one can be picked up for $600.
R5 and R5C... Lot of money and MICRO USB connector... Really? Also stupid 8k raw but no option for Clog2 that even if wouldn't be totally used due to their sensor limitation, it could at least provide a little more latitude than the quite miserable (for a video centric camera) 10 stops and half of dynamic range with basically no additional stops under because they've been lost because of the clog3 curve compression.
@ Martin Hommel. Yeah that camera is called the 3000d here in New Zealand and yes it contains Canons ancient 18mp sensor from the original 7d which is close on 13 years old. Oh and Canon is arrogant that they price it higher than the Nikon D3500 which has a much more modern sensor and just a better camera all round.
And why not? The 4-digit series is the "please buy this rather than a Sony compact cam" class. The customer wants "as cheap as possible" and re-recycling old tech that you have the payed of production lines for is allowing you to give him that AND make money. The production lines that produce those sensors likely can not deliver the much more complex DualPix technology. The 3-digit line re-uses rather current technology (24MP gen3 DualPix) and the EOS M has either the 24MP or the brand new 32MP APS-C sensor (M6-II).
I came across some wildlife shooters this week, and all of them were still using DSLRs. Professional sports photographers ditto. I use mirrorless, but if I was invested in serious telephoto lenses I'd need a very good reason to switch from DSLRs.
Images look great, but they will look even great on a R5/C, especially if you shoot landscapes. The larger sensor really makes a huge difference in how fine details are resolved.
@@borderlands6606 Wildlife and birding photography is worlds above better on R5/C than on a DSLR like a 5DIII. That is because the AF is faster and can intelligently track animals. I also find that having the ability to customize buttons to your liking is a big advantage. I have a button that switches between AI Servo and One Shot AF, and lets me be in the right mode at the press of a button. Try doing that on a 5DIII!
@@vitaminb4869 This may be true, but photographers were turning out stunning nature photography in film days, never mind DSLRs with 10 frames a second.
And they have ridiculous names, so you always have to trial and error instead of just looking at a focal length printed on the hood because it's not there.
SMALL aps-c. Eos M was a great size. I can't justify buying an aps-c that's the same price and size as entry level full frame. Besides some of us want pocket cameras for street, travel, and hiking without needing to drop the quality all the way down to 1 inch point and shoots.
For 99% of population out there you cannot go wrong with a leader in cameras like Canon. All this trying to find flaws and faults is just nitpicking for the sake of nitpicking. Nothing is perfect, anything will have some cons, but it's still an amazing camera system regardless. People need to go back 30 years into film years (or the very first DSLRs) and see how they like those cameras even compared to the entry-level mirrorless of today.
I owned the R5. Twice. It is a great camera, and checks tons of boxes, but... as an echo-system? I looked around at my key lenses: 70-200/2.8, the RF one is a pain to use in real life with the push-pull zoom, if you are using it fast environments like indoor sports - the Sony GMII version with internal zoom is much more user friendly. The 50/1.2L is bigger, heavier and more expensive than the Sony GM equivalent which also is quieter and faster. And again, no RF version of 35/1.4, 24/1.4, etc. No third-party glass. I do really like the Canon handling (apart from that stupidly placed on/off switch), the user interface, and the colors. The R5 as a stand-alone camera is very impressive, but with an echo system, it still falls short.
Canon cripples cameras by purpose, for instance R6 looks like a great camera for video until you realise that it is crippled, aperture/shutter priority for video is blocked, it is capable but blocked, what a shame. So if you are looking for a video camera, avoid the Canon R6, go with Sony A74.

I have used Canon for a long time but am now considering moving to Sony as the E-Mount offers more third-party lens options at less cost from Sigma, Tamron, and other manufacturers. THe R-Mount lenses perform great but, ... MAN! ... the PRICE.
@@kiwimike2330 It just seems to be a better upgrade path you know? You can buy some cheaper lenses for what you need now, and upgrade to some great options if/when the time comes. No need to splurge on the high end just to cover a focal length :/
@yuan yeah, I use all kinds of lenses, some Sigma I series, Sigma Art series, Sony G, Sony GM and a Samyang lens. The choice for Sony is pretty endless for excellent well made lenses, I feel sorry for people who get stuck with Canon, there’s only 2 choices, cheap and plastic with slow stm motors and crappy extending focus, or super expensive L glass.

@@sergeyzakharov7326 It depends what your interest are. L mount sports and wildlife lenses are by Sigma, but there are no exotic f2.8 tele primes and zooms as with Nikon and Canon. People who need and can afford those are probably not hanging them on an RP. The Lumix S1.8 series are inexpensive, of similar size and take the same filter thread. Being videocentric they are also parfocal.
Not good. The M6 II is close to a sports camera in performance. The RP is bargain basement, and limited in a great many ways. Even in image quality, which the M6 II is superior. Save up for at least an R6, as the R isn't great, either (I owned one).
I have Canon M50 and all I want is to have 4k with reliable AF! It's not much to ask. Unfortunately Canon M50 mark ii did not deliver much improvement. I like small cameras and I hope canon will not abandon M mount. I am not going to use big R bodies and large and expensive RF lenses. I would probably go for Sony a7iv with a Sigma lenses.
My biggest problem with Canon currently is lenses: 1. Their pro-level gear is no longer affordable for non-pros (like myself). In the “old days” (2 years ago when EF was alive) I could afford L series lenses as a hobby photographer, and have 5. Now, their RF L-series lenses are out of reach, and the non-L lenses are unexciting. 2. They seem to be going for the “see how big and extreme we can make our lenses” instead of “here is a lens that you regular folk will give us money for”. Their enemy (Sony) have pro grade lenses mostly at EF L pricing, that are smaller than EF (except for perhaps the 50mm, which is smaller than the RF). Canon seem to be targeting either pro level or entry level, but the enthusiast ends up having to look elsewhere.
My biggest complain is unbalanced lens line up. And Its very unortodox to me. Instead of just 85 1.8 they go 85 2 with half-macro and strange focus mechanism. Instead of "just 100mm macro" for $1000 they make $1400 100mm macro with some features, that nobody asking for, but with not really stellar IQ for modern macro lens. Instead of 70-300 4-5.6 they decide to make a longer and darker interpretation of it , i mean 100-400 5.6-8. And there is no such thing in canon line as "mid range" lenses with sealing ang good mechanics, like Nikon 1.8 primes or Sony G or "just well built not G sony" lenses, like 85 1.8 that sealed and has great IQ.
100-400 and 70-300 are completely different lines ups. Don't confuse. I actually need that 85 f2 that is good from wide open. The 1.8 is a outdated 25yr old design that should have been updated sooner. You did hit it on the head that canon doesn't care about its rookies. That's why you will see many go to nikon and sony that actually offer affordable 35, 50, 85 mm options.
The 100-400mm f/5.6-8 is a masterstroke of a lens. Light, compact, and offers enough reach for a lot of applications. It's also compatible with TCs. And it's fairly inexpensive - both the Sony and Panasonic 70-300mm lenses cost almost twice as much while offering no substantial advantages besides weather sealing. The Sony can't accept TCs, and the Panasonic has pretty mediocre IQ. The RF 100mm macro is expensive, but not outrageously so; thing is, it's a lens thought for specialist photographers, who represent most of the customer base of the EF version: wedding togs and true macro fiends. The first group prefer it for its versatility, as it works both as a portrait and detail lens, while the others, well, it's obvious. So the RF version offers even larger magnification, as well as spherical aberration control for portraits. But I can see why a lot of people might prefer something like the 105mm f/2.8 Nikkor-S, which offers excellent IQ and features at a very moderate price! Agreed on the 85mm f/2, that one's a dud. Also agree on the weathersealing.
I did notice my R6 doing some inexplicable IS motions while I was not actually shooting anything, so if anything is eating at the battery life I think it is just systems being a bit too active despite not being called on. IS for example should be completely off the table unless I at least half press the shutter, which would save a lot of battery over the course of a day.
In 2010 i supplemented my analog Leica (95% Kodak slides) with digital Canon, starting with the 550D, now on the R6. With crop my most beloved lens was the 60mm Macro and now on Full-Frame it is the 1.4/85L IS (and the RF 100L Macro!). I like Canon because of the colours. I am doing a lot of portraits, and Canon skin-tones ooC are great. Canon JPEG-Quality is outstanding. If you are used to shoot slides sinces decades you will certainly love a digital camera which can produce nice results and no need to change a lot in post. This is clearly complemented with the Canon interface. I am not interested in tweaking stuff. I use my cameras to take pictures and expect perfect quality with easy use - just like a Leica M. I am not interested in technical subtilities, only in good results of my photos and intuitive handling of the camera. The only complain i have with my Canon stuff is size and weight. In the end, Canon is not a perfect, but sufficient match for my needs. Thanks for the great video and stay healthy! Greetings from Germany - Andreas

Nice M6 Mark II b-roll! I've got one and considering another. I use it mostly for video (with an Atomos Ninja V to avoid the 30 minute per clip limiter). I do very much hope they continue the mount. They definitely need to make things clear. I'd like to see them take EF-M more into hybrid video photo territory.
Another thing Canon (& Nikon) need to wake up and smell the coffee on is providing better (or at least some) support for 3rd party lenses on their mirrorless systems. Sure the L/S line of lenses are great and all, but they also have a great big price tag attached to them making them non-viable for a lot of shooters, also Canon's insistence on not providing a lens hood in the box for their non-L lenses can also stop as well please, if sony can spend the extra 1-2 dollars for a lens hood on all of their FE lenses so can you Canon.

Jordon, please ease my pain and make a decision for me, no pressure :) BTW, I genuinely crack up with you guys, your videos are getting so entertaining. I am making my final decision between an R3 and a Z9. I suspect the Z9 is a better camera but it's quite heavy. How do you think the auto-focus really compares ( I'm a birder) Is the 6k Video discernibly different than the 8K ? and also, the editing experience ( I use Premier Pro on windows) Much appreciated.
People love Aps-C and there's no reason why Canon couldn't bring a line of RF mount cameras from 500$ to 1500$. Maybe two or three different bodies with more and more features as prize goes up that allows you to both play with Aps-C and take advantage of it, but also, if you want to, buy RF Full Frame lenses and, if you eventually upgrade to a full frame, not have the need to sell your Aps-C lenses too. Basically, they need to do the same thing you could do with EF before they brought RF into the market. You can buy either Full Frame or Aps-C cameras and lenses and you could go from one to the other without getting rid of everything in the process. Also, this approach is perfectly possible and they could get a lot of sales from it because there's already an RF sensor with an Aps-C size in the Canon C70. This way, people who own that camera, if Canon produces Aps-C lenses, could buy them for their work instead of adapting EF glass or going with the bigger full frame ones that are unnecessary because part of the lens coverage is out of the sensor size. But also, the C70 sensor exists already so they don't have to create a new one for an Aps-C line. They just have to do two different bodies for it and give the 500$ entry one less features and more to the 1500$ one.
Canon's FF lineup is already very affordable to get into for anyone moving up from a modern smartphone. The 800+ price offers great options that some smartphones can't yet do. I would rather more competition in the Medium Format space. Treat FF like they did APSC a while back and just jump to larger sensor with more computational power.
I think the era of 500$ cameras is long gone. There is just no profit in that segment anymore and the time and money spent on R&D and production is better used to advance more profittable products and scale their production better. With scale even the more advanced and complex products will get cheaper. This means that in the future it will be more viable to use a high res full frame sensor and just use a crop mode for APS-C and still have a descent resolution. This way there is no production cycles wasted on actual APS-C cameras and the increased production scale of the high res full frame bodies makes each unit cheaper. That is why I did not agree with the path that Nikon took with the Z50 and dedicated APS-C lenses for it when the lense lineup for full frame was not there yet and the race to keep customers who where willing to switch to mirrorless was still raging. Bottom line camera manufacturers MUST keep their product lineups slim, there is no space for senseless "cheap" products or artificially added limitations anymore. The market has changed and the cheaper camera segments were eaten by smartphones.
@mipmipmipmipmip When supply chain hell ends and we enter another recession, we'll see a sudden revival of the $500 camera (maybe $750 after inflation) because that is all people will be prepared to pay.
I was that close to switch from Canon to Sony A7IV but the 4k crop is a no-go for me, I choose the R6 & keeps my old (but not that old!) EF lens that work great and produce great result!
tbh canon line up kinda falls behind the competition (r5 is an exception to that rule) + i have huge problems with their lenses: they're either really expensive or have somewhat bad build quality. the thing that got me switching to sony is that i realized that to match a7iv + tamron 70-180 2.8 i have to go for r6 + rf 70-200 2.8 otherwise im stuck with an adaptor and huge ef lens or f4 aperture
@@-grey There's things like the X-E4 if you need a smaller size. I wonder if the big 3 will even bother with APS-C anymore. Sony hasn't made a new APS-C sensor for their a6xxx series since 2014, the Z50 borrows a sensor from the DSLR generation if I remember correctly, and Canon has made 8 lenses in like, 9 years of the EF-M mount while releasing ~20 lenses in 2-3 years for the RF.
I recently started photographing/videoing and getting introduced to camera stuff. Got myself 250D from Canon and I can 100% agree. If you use the live view screen (it has mirror, but half the useful options are on the live view screen, like brightness, color and grey sample or focusing modes so you really do need it all the time unless you're doing a set and forget event), the battery is done with just photographing really quickly. If you shoot video, you gotta rush to get it captured whatever you're shooting. Another thing was a weird options system where depending on your one option or mode, your options screen looks completely different and for example figuring out how to bring the grid or histogram up took me quite a bit of googling and browsing the manual. The menus are great, but not always intuitive or practical. Other than those, I really dig the usability of it. Really, really lovely features like 4k video, bluetooth/wlan transfer of files (compressed or raw) and remote use from phone via bluetooth/wlan. Makes it so convenient to do hands on home projects like shooting videos/pics for something and quickly transferring them for editing. Meaning that it works seamlessly as a TOOL for creative projects, where you just want good quality shots for the project, not to make taking the shots and getting them on the desk your project.
I adore my 90D but I wish there was a compelling mirrorless option from canon that packed the same punch for under $2000 USD. It’s just such a high price for entry into the mirrorless world if you’re already used to an enthusiast level camera like the 90D.

Canon's lack of commitment to the M lineup was why I started with a M50 and upgraded to a Fuji X-S10. I'd have happily stayed Canon but there was just nowhere to go without accepting a huge increase in size & weight and a huge jump in price.
I love the form factor of the M mount, and the compactness it allows the lenses. My concern about the APSC lineup is, if they introduce an R mount APSC camera, will the sheer size of the mount opening dictate a larger body size and also subsequently larger lenses.
Just pull a Viltrox or Cosina like they did for the Z-mount. Take the existing EF-M lenses and give it a fluted bottom near the flange. It'll be ugly, but it would work.
Yes. Look at Nikon Z mount APS-C. Ridiculous camera proportions, ridiculous lenses (and slow to boot because they had to artificially increase the gap to the more expensive 35mm lineup in terms of look and capability). It's all about the business, so you're better off with a brand that has a business focus on APS-C or MFT where can get lightweight native F2.8 zooms and F1.4 primes.
Can you address the fact that Adobe does such a horrible job with processing Cannon RAW files? I have an r5, came from my Sony a73 and I could not figure out for over a year why my RAW files looked so bad, even at normal ISO. I stumbled on a post that discussed it a bit and sure enough I downloaded a secondary RAW processing program, I am still in the 30 day trial, but I will probably end up paying over $100.00 for it. Months of shooting I was disappointed in the RAW files of the R5 and it was Adobe all along. My old a7r even in the RAW files you could see the clarity and sharpness in the eye, 2 years later I am getting back to that with my R5:)
Canon really needs a lower end body to compete with the a7c as well as a line up of small primes for smaller body. The RF mount cameras are great but they are all thicc beast. Come up with something more sleek and smaller ffs.
Canon cameras are fine, but just know you're buying into a camera that has been deliberately designed by the manufacturer to be about 75 per-cent of what the manufacturer is capable of actually doing. For example, Canon has been capable of delivering us 4K to budget Canon users since about 2014-2015, but they waited until just before people started jumping ship to other platforms like Sony and Panasonic to release 4k (and even then it was crippled 4k with a heavy crop and only at 24fps). Tldr: If you buy a Canon camera (other than a flagship Canon camera), just know your Canon camera is an intentionally crippled camera.

Canon is using an ancient architecture ancient OS and ancient CPUs to run their firmware, that's why we have so many limitations. The image and movie processing is handled by ASICs, and it executes specific tasks controlled by the cpu. The CPU runs only and only the menu and manages all the other specific circuits in the camera, like AF, lens drive, IBIS, liveview, image pipeline etc. Even the histogram is a pretty significant task for the CPU. Most of the datastream does not interact with the CPU

@@myocean3228 no, the CPU is low power. The R5 and R6 overheats by design. There is a single component that overheats. This performs video processing and it's designed by canon. Usually realtime video processing is handled by ASICs or FPGAs, not CPUs
I recently sold my fuji kit and picked up an EOS R and the 35mm 1.8. I have no complaints about the EOS R - in terms of dynamic range, autofocus, and file flexibility it's an upgrade over my x-pro3. Prime lens options, on the other hand, leave a lot to be desired. I shoot portraits, and while I hear the RF 50mm 1.2 is amazing, it's so, so expensive. And the RF 50mm 1.8 is underwhelming until stopped down to f/4 or so. I'm beginning to regret not picking up a used Nikon Z7 and the 50mm 1.8 S. A strong set of Canon primes at non-exotic apertures would be really nice, but they're nowhere on the roadmap.
According to photons to photos, the EOS R has about one third of a stop better dynamic range than the X-Pro3 at base ISO. You're going to be hard-pressed to see the difference in real life in terms of file flexibility unless you use technologically obsolete software like lightroom and misuse the detail slider, in which case the software will make you think xtrans files are worse, which they are not.
@@problemat1que The file flexibility I'm talking about is mostly with color. In my experience shooting fuji for 3 years, getting clean, neutral colors out of x-trans files, even in capture one, can be difficult. They're pleasing to look at, but can get a little muddy if that makes sense. Something about the x-trans sensor, maybe. I never used lightroom for fuji files. And regarding what photons to photos says, all I can really say is that in my experience with the EOS R so far, I am noticing files that look cleaner, including in shadow recovery. But the Nikon Z system would be an improvement there, too.
I own the Canon EOS R3 and the Canon C70 and although I am happy with the C70, I AM NOT HAPPY with the R3. Essentially Canon has not given their most expensive EOS-R camera any love. Now I do email Canon Support and I am a CPS Gold Member so I reach out to them as well to suggest new features while providing supporting information on why the suggestions are beneficial, but alas nothing yet In short, the Canon EOS R3 is NOT a good video camera... and, there are a handful of reasons why: 1. NO Custom WhiteBalance setting in LiveView mode for Video. They added it to Photo, not Video. Sucks... the C70 can do it. 2. NO Histogram and Levels while recording.. DPREview you nailed that. It sucks. 3. NO ability to disable IBIS but keep lens IS enabled. SUCKS. Wobble anyone? This would fix that. 4. NO Atomos compatibility. I.E. you can't trigger recording from the camera and there is no RAW out. 5. NO shutter angle, XF-AVC, Cinema RAW Lite, and Face Only/Prioritty autofocus. In Canons defense they usually only reserve this stuff for cinema. But still... would be great. 6. NO oversampled 1080p. Arguably the BEST film mode. You can do it on the C70. And although the R3 has oversampled 4k, it has pixel binned 1080. Sucks. 7. NO ability to map a button to format storage. Very useful in my c70. Use it all the time. So kinda sucks I have to menu dive to do it in the R3. There are a handful of more suggestions but that is what is on my mind right now. Like I said, I reach out to Canon a lot. Probably every 2 weeks. I write lengthy emails about the industry, competitors, and suggestions for firmware updates.... so, it's not like I am just sitting in my house bitching. Hmmm, why would you want to deactivate only one type of stabilization? Also, the lack of oversampled 1080p is more likely to do with sensor design limitations than if it was actually possible. You'll see on plenty of other cameras that there are limitations based around resolution and frame rate, just because every sensor can't do everything.
No IBIS makes sense, since Canon had so many issues with the R5 overheating, with poor recovery times. The sensor probably needed to be rigidly mounted to be able to transfer enough heat out of it to stop the camera from randomly shutting down.

Going to another system currently - I don't think it makes much sense except for few specialists not well served by their current brand. All major manufacturers do have awesome innovative products. What Canon and Nikon don't offer in mirrorless-mount lenses can be adapted. New into the interchangeable lens word - take cameras in your hand, what feels best. Now R7 an R10 is out so we have aps-c covered. For video shooters external monitor to get wave forms etc. Is only option. Canon need to release 24mm, 35mm, 135mm prime's to keep everyone happy also will be nice to get ultra wide like 14mm with fast aperture f1.4 - 1.8
Honestly I think you nailed with the zoom comment. Their Zoom Lenses are just abysmal. The RF 70-200 f2.8 is fantastic. It's arguably the best out there currently. However, the 100-500 is pretty quick but the focus issues on that are just horrid. Meanwhile Sony has the 200-600 that's internal zoom and it glides like hot butter. The only thing out of Canon now is that they're making 200mm and 300mm primes .. and you really have to wonder where their head is at. Especially considering that if you want to use the 100-500 with a telephoto to get to 600, you're giving up 200mm of usable range (300-500 -> 420-700 1.4x & 600-1000 2x). Add that to the fact that the Bokeh when focusing on distant objects is ugly as all get out... and you really start to wonder where their head is at.

The reasons I presume are shown below. (1) Customers and users who want a budget price camera are mainly classified as two groups. I never bought a camera, going way back to the Kodak DC3400, with the idea of it recording video. I typically forget that whatever camera is in my hand can records videos. I buy a camera to take stills, period. Even my cell phone, I forget that it can record videos most of the time. I would like an R6 type with more MPs however.
I very recently replaced my, now ancient, Nikon D5000 (not a 500) with an R5, and while I'm blown away by it, it's also not really meeting the hype for me. What I'm really blown away by is the advancements in AI processing that can take the rather crappy (color noise) output from the R5 and make it awesome. Without DXO PureRaw and the like, I'd be very disappointed with how far short the native images fall from the hype - clearly I was naive about how much post processing I should expect. Also, the AF system is a constant battle for me. I get that I'm still figuring out what settings I have to use in which situations - but from the hype I wasn't expecting to have this struggle. And the number of hot pixels on a long exposure is just sickening - maybe I have a bottom bin sensor but hot pixel expectations weren't covered in any of the reviews I've seen so I don't really know how normal my experience is. But it's a lot more than 4x my old D5000 (12MP vs 45MP), it's more like 40x!
I've gone back to many old raw image and processed them with DxO's DeepPrime noise reduction, which has brought new life to them. I do NOT want baked-in 2021 noise reduction in raw files, when who knows what 2028 noise reduction technology could do.
This would be the nail in Canon's coffin for me if I was shopping for another system. DXO can restore a crazy amount of detail, but when that detail is obliterated by the camera before you can even touch the RAW, it makes the effort futile. Only Pentax does something similar, but nobody's really shopping them. Every other brand is sane in this matter, for whatever reason.
Fan fact: You can buy 2x Nikon Z9 plus 1x Nikkor 800 f6.3 for the price of 1x Canon 800 f5.6. Talk about insane fleecing customers. Annnnnnd dont forget the Cripple Hammer. 🤪
And the 800/5.6 is just their old 400/2.8 with a built in teleconverter. Same with the 1200/8. Everyone hoped Canon would actually put some effort in to mirrorless vs their DSLRs, but they're still at the copy/paste game... -__-
Remember when Canon was the laughing stock in terms of innovation before 2019? They have come a long way. But I'm still upset at how long it took them.
I am not a professional photographer, so I am OK with my current APS-C camera, the Canon T5i. I have lenses and filters to do strange things as needed. I am going to wait for the mirrorless wars to settle down a bit, and them MAYBE I'll see about getting one. One thing bad I heard about the Canon lineup was overheating in long videos. That wouldn't be a show stopper for me, since I really don't do videos, but it's something to consider.
You guys are right on the money about Canon. The company needs to $#!* or get off the pot with a more entry level FF R-series (to replace the R and RP)... AND they need to introduce a couple APS-C R-series sooner rather than later. I don't think they can accomplish what they need to with a single APS-C camera. There are two markets they need to address: One is a high end mirrorless 7D Mark II sports/action camera while the other needs to fill the role of the M50/M50 Mark II as a fairly affordable "vlogger" camera. The 7DII DSLR and M50-series have been their two biggest successes in the last 6 or 8 years. The R7 (mirrorless 7DII) should be a robust model with no more than 24MP, dual card slots, very fast readout to avoid rolling shutter issues, form factor similar to R5/R6 and ability to share the BG-R10 grip those cameras use. It needs IBIS and an AF system similar to R3, though perhaps without Eye Control to keep cost reasonable. The 7DII was around $1700 or $1800 US when intro'd... But 8 years later we should expect an R7 to be $2000 US or a little more. They may need to use other mods to keep the camera from being too expensive. Perhaps it could be electronic shutter only (like Nikon Z9), though it needs a sensor protector to quickly drop in place whenever the lens is removed. An E shutter would allow very fast frame rates as well as silent mode, but should also have something user adjustable that audibly let's us know when shots are being taken. The M50/M50II replacement is a different matter. I don't know if it will need to be 24MP too or if it might increase to 32.5MP (like M6 Mark II and 90D). Emphasis will be on video, which I know little about. This model needs to be affordable... Around $1000 US or a little less (competes with Nikon Z50 and Sony a6400?). Whether it has a built in EVF or uses a separate one might be dictated by price. A problem with the separate EVF now available for M-series is that it occupies the hot shoe, so accessory flash can't be used at the same time. That needs to be addressed. Canon has stated there will be no EF-S style R-series lenses and there don't need to be. But they will still need at least a few "crop only" lenses. They just don't need to have a modified bayonet that prevents them being attached to the FF cameras (as is the case with the EF-S lenses for Canon APS-C DSLRs). There are already at least two such lenses in the Canon lens roadmap: An 18-45mm "kit" lens and an ultra wide 10-24mm. Other than those, full frame capable RF mount lenses can serve fine for now, but eventually Canon will need to develop at least a few more crop specific lenses. Canon needs to get the APS-C R-series cameras to market quickly. Nikon and Sony already have them. And Nikon is undoubtedly working on a mirrorless D500 since it was one of their most successful models. It is just a matter of time until Sony ups their game further. Fuji already has competitive cameras, only lacks a fast action capable AF system. OM Systems has figured out an AF system, though they are still M4/3.

@@carlosreyesf19 Well, Canon fooled me! The name had me thinking mirrorless 7DII. But what they intro'd is more of a successor to the 90D or T8I/850D. I'm not saying R7 is bad by any means. Just the opposite, in fact. It is a fantastic camera for the money! Amazing that it has an AF system similar to the $6000 R3, at 1/4 the price! (Also amazing is that the R10's AF is similar, too, for even less.) I predict Canon will sell R7 as fast as they can make them. I bet Sony is nervous, since the R7 out classes the a6600 in many respects, but only costs $100 more. Nikon is probably shocked, too. Canon needs some additional RF-S lenses quickly. There are a number of RF full frame lenses that will work well on the R7, but for example an ultra wide is still needed. Also perhaps a smaller macro and a mire upscale wqlk-aroind lens. I may change my mind, bur don't plan to run out to buy R7. They don't meet my immediate needs very well. I would like to work with that AF system and a few other features of the camera, but really need a vertical grip and am not a fan of the revised control layout. Regarding the latter, sure I could learn to use it, but it is so different from other cameras and switching between them will be just asking for trouble. I am not sure why Canon felt the need to mess with already very good ergonomics and control layout. Based on all I've seen so far, I probably will be highly recommending the R7 to people, even if it's not quite right for me peronally.

Like you said, the pricing is brilliant, I think it's an awesome all-rounder with few compromises. I currently have an SL3 so I was wondering if the R7 would feel to large and heavy (as opposed to the R10), but today I tried out the 90D and it is actually more comfortable to hold (my hands are large). So I've made up my mind, R7 it is.
@@carlosreyesf19 I'm sure you'll enjoy the R7. The R10 is a little smaller, but it lacks in body image stabilization. I haven't shot with SL3, but have a Canon M5 that I found uncomfortably light and small after using 7D-series and 5D-series cameras, all with grips, for many years. I ended up putting an L-bracket on the M5, which helped a little. I'm still not as quick handling it as I like... Small buttons and dials in unfamiliar places!
As far as I'm concerned, I'm only shooting photos, that's what I bought my camera for initially. So what I actually would have liked to see from any camera producer, is a camera that is dedicated to photos only but with loads of image quality, with lowlight capabilities, especially Canon. If I really want to shoot video, I've got my cellphone always at the ready. I'm a photographer and not a videographer. I know it was much easier for the camera manufactures to sell cameras with video capabilities because that was much easier to built into the camera then improvement to the picture quality. Nowadays however, with the unbelievable photo manipulation apps like ON1 I am much more inclined to shoot with a much higher ISO then I used to and you do not see the difference in quality. Still I would have liked to see this possibility of shooting with high ISO in a camera that doesn't cost me an arm and a leg instead of having to invest in an app that can do that.
I wish the R6 was in the 30-34mp size - I think 2mp is such a step back! I like Canon colors better than the Sony, but the A74 is very compelling-- It just needs a faster burst rate
I wonder how the A1 compares in CIPA ratings with the battery grip. In theory, that should double it to a hot 1060 shots, right? (And then you're closer to what the Z9 and R3 have in terms of body size, anyway.)
I've had my A1(w/o battery grip) for 5 months now and have only shot around 4k photos, but in that time I find that just being powered on eats the battery, and the number of photos I take is less of a factor. When navigating through the menu, it consumes roughly 1% battery per minute. However I went out the other day to shoot some wildlife, shot around 400 photos over the course of a few hours, only used 10% of the battery.
Chris & Jordan didn't bash Canon that much.... I'm surprised in a good way. As a long time Canon user, I just want to have 3 things from Canon. 1. New battery. My experience with LP-E6NH on photo only is decent, but once start working on video it drains faster than I down some shots. 2. Mid-end lenses or get Sigma/Tamron/Tokina/Samyang/Viltrox to do it for them. I don't mind the top end L is expensive, it's not going to be in my bag. However the entry level lenses from Canon RF can be quirky and not enough. If the rumours of RF20-50/f4 pancake is true. I can finally stop using EF 20-35/f2.8 or Tamron EF 17-28 for daily use. 3. Improve the app on mobile devices. Faster transfer of photos to smartphone/tablet/laptop. And less clumsy startup settings to establish connections. We need the faster Bluetooth/NFC pairing. Canon has a better app than others but that's because Sony/Nikon/Panasonic/Fuji e.t.c are all terrible or non-existent. You can't beat the Smartphone nowadays, so integrate well is the only way.
I refuse to buy any Canon camera BECAUSE it's the biggest player. Other companies produce products at least as good and I feel it's my duty to support the competition.
I’m been using canon scene 1976. It’s easy to use. I’m currently a M -50 user and use EF lens with booster and adapters. I agree with Jordon the lower end of the mirror less full frame needs more updating for me to make the jump, but I’m just an enthusiast not a pro.

Yes, we all want to know that. Personally as a casual amateur I try never to use my smartphone. I feel naff holding it out infront of me. I prefer a real camera - even though its larger and not so convenient How would a top model feel posing for a guy with a smartphone?
Fun to watch pessimist prime go up against rose eyed wonder. But seriously, enjoyed the two-sided review. Have to admit, I am biased toward Canon. For me, the biggest points that Sad Eyed Sally made was about market segmentation and low end offerings. Segmentation: It seems Canon is stuck in time believing there truly is enough market demand for the segmentation they court with their line up. In my opinion, it’s time for a single mount line up that markets to beginners, advanced users and professionals. I would find a way to reintroduced Rebel line up that is based on the RF mount with low end lenses that caters to beginners. Then the Rebel line needs consolidation. The M6 II is a terrific camera for vloggers. Let’s face it, Canon must capture that market and neither the overheating R5/6 nor the under powered M6 compares with Sony. So, form of M6, power of R5, and no overheating would be a winner. Finally, I still like my G7 X III but damn, I wish it would record 4K without overheating. If I ever waffled (and I probably won't) it would be to Nikon. I think they are really upping their game and I have always liked their image quality. Be well.
I'm a Nikonian, and really appreciated my friends giving me a look at the future as they all bought R5s for wildlife/bird photography. I, as you, was on the fence with sticking with them for sports/wildlife/action. I stayed around longer than most (not all) of my fellow DSLRers who refused to buy in the the Z line-up until the Z9. Then there was the 400mm f/2.8 TC, then the 800mm f/6.3 and suddenly, all is well in Nikon land for now. I can honestly say the Z9 was worth the wait. There are planned firmware updates coming that will continue to broaden the cameras appeal and AF abilities. I picked up my DSLR once since the Z9's arrival 5 months ago (for landscape) and for Wildlife/sports/action it's been, thus far, a completely different, and mostly welcomed experience.

After shooting NIKON for 23 years, I switched to CANON after NIKON dropped the ball with the D6! I was still shooting with my D4S and was ready to up grade but Noooooo! I switched to CANON with the 1DXMK3 and have been over the moon…and a few years later, NIKON drops the Z9! 🙄 I didn’t upgrade to the R3 because, well…it’s not a flagship body and my 1DXMK3 is still putting in the WORK! All that being said, CANON is going to have to put away the “Cripple Hammer” AND throw everything plus the kitchen sink at the R1!!! 🤷🏾♂️ I don’t have to shoot mirrorless, but I’d like to…on CANON if they would just stop getting in their own way!

Excited for when you do Fujifilm. APSC lineup is great. I would hope they would try some more rangefinder designs and more functional instax products. The medium format scene might get more competition. But their lenses are still behind in terms of looks, design, range and leading in terms of f-stop compared to full frame.

I love you guys. You are able to be both one of the most honest and informative Camera review channels AND the most entertaining. I am a photog who is dipping his toe into filmmaking, and have been shooting Sony e-mount since it was only for APS-C, but I still watch your reviews of other cameras to get a sense of how things are evolving and what's available from the "competition." I'm glad that Canon and Nikon are both putting out good cameras, as it forces Sony to keep innovating and improving, too. More competition is good for us consumers.
Canon has rested on their lapels for a while. Maybe since 2010. I left in 2015. Saw that other brands supported all their consumers with more affordable offerings. 35, 50, 85mm. Canon only refreshes $$$$ lenses. And the dynamic range is still years behind. I have no problem keeping up with my 2011 D600 24MP sensor. Sure the R5 is good but I was never in the market to spend $4500 USD for features found in the $2000 market.
Then theres the lenses. The 85mm 1.8 was released in 1993. Never was updated. Horrible fringing.
All their 50mms were rickety. Never addressed their consumer lenses.
Most manufacturers will have less consumer level products because people have advance cameras in their phones.
I actually really like the cheapo Ef 50 1.8 STM, great image quality in my opinion for that price

I used the 1.8/85 with the 6D for several years for portraits. It is sharp wide open. The purple fringing and the Longitudinal chromatic abberation (LOCA) is due to the insufficient color correction in the short wavelength spectrum, which was not predominantly necessary to correct when it was developed in analog times. So, this was a very good lens: cheap, fast, sharp, small. Nothing to complain.
I made a swap from Sony A9 to the R5 and the bugs on the R5 have reminded me of Sony in 2016. Still don’t feel the AF in the R5 is as intelligent than the old A9. Agree with the need to manipulate the case mode…it’s exhausting. Thanks for the video.
Why did you change from Sony to Canon?
The Canon 1Dx’s also have case mode. Never had an issue adjusting the levels. I assume you shoot sports?
Funny how everyone thought that since the R5 shoots 20fps, it should be a competitor to the A9, but with more MP. But it's not close due to the lack of stacked sensor. Two completely different cameras. It's like consumers thinking slapping a 4K badge on anything instantly gives that thing cinematic quality.
The AF on my r5 works better than on the a7s3 I rented

As an EOS R owner, one of the most frustrating things for me is the lack of 3rd party support for the RF mount - I moved from EF -> RF and I miss being able to consider Sigma/Tamron/etc lenses as solid alternatives to Canon's own lineup.
Yes I have an EF-RF adapter, but the added barrel length makes them a pain in the ass to use.

The last Canon camera I used was a AE1 it was pretty sweet.
I loved all my Canons, but I recently switched from Canon APS-C to Fuji X for my first mirrorless because of their unclear perspective for APS-C. I don't want to go full-frame because of the weight, size and price of the lenses. Fuji's Lenses are really unexpectedly perfect for my needs. Small, light and tack sharp. And the fourth generation X-Sensor is excellent. Low noise, great raw files. I'm very happy with my choice.
Fuji is a great choice (likely best) for the aspc format but I find their lenses pretty expensive. Yes they have excellent build quality, but they need more affordable options in my opinion. They opened up their lenses to 3rd parties, so I hope that enabled more affordable lenses. Their future is looking bright.
@@numerous_use True! The Fujinons are not exactly cheap. But the price is fair for the quality. Still I'm looking forward for more sigma and other 3rd party options. The three sigmas that are already on the market cost almost half compared to the fujinons with almost identical IQ. Very nice! And if your budget is very tight you can get some excellent - manual - 3rd-party primes.

You should've checked out Sony first. Their FF bodies are the same size or even smaller than Fuji's high end APS-C bodies. And there are plenty of small and light primes from Sony, Sigma, Tamron, and Samyang/Rokinon. Many at similar prices to APS-C lenses, and some cheaper AND higher quality than Fuji's own lenses.

@@BlueBomberTurbo Yes some sony bodies are comparable in size to fuji apsc bodies and sure there are plenty of cheap small and light primes for sony e mount, but when it comes to zoom lenses there is just no comparison. Apsc zooms are always going to be smaller and lighter and generally speaking cheaper. In a relatively small shoulder bag (approx. 20x25x25 cm) I have my fuji camera and 3 lenses covering everything from 15 to 450 mm (FF equivalent). Try to do the same with a FF system.
Here is the thing: Canon is in the unique position of the company that has the know-how and the financial resources to create the perfect hybrid camera with the best ergonomics and specifications but they will not do it because... they want to sell a separate line of video-only cameras.
Bought my first full frame camera few months back. Lack of native lens options was the only reason why I bought the Sony A7iv instead of the R5. Wish Canon had some moderately priced quality prime lenses like 35 1.4, 24 1.4 or even a 85 1.4( 85 1.2 is amazing but it's too expensive and overkill for me).

All of my Ef lenses work perfectly on my r5. I have rf and ef and prefer the ef in some cases because I get to use the ND adapter with them.
And the A74 is not in the league of the R5 with is crop 4k60 no 4k120 and bad rolling shutter. Plus 10 frames a second.

The trouble with Canon is that they are in love with their cripple hammer. They're crippling cameras for no good reason and they're still selling 12 year old DSLR tech (Canon EOS 4000 with digic 4 processors). It seems to me that they don't have a long term lower to mid market strategy. The M series seems to have been killed off completely. I am not holding my breath waiting for exciting news from them.
Canon’s low end cameras are designed for consumers that shop in big box retailers or are looking for a deal online. The best buy would be a Canon 5diii. A nice one can be picked up for $600.
R5 and R5C... Lot of money and MICRO USB connector... Really? Also stupid 8k raw but no option for Clog2 that even if wouldn't be totally used due to their sensor limitation, it could at least provide a little more latitude than the quite miserable (for a video centric camera) 10 stops and half of dynamic range with basically no additional stops under because they've been lost because of the clog3 curve compression.
@ Martin Hommel. Yeah that camera is called the 3000d here in New Zealand and yes it contains Canons ancient 18mp sensor from the original 7d which is close on 13 years old. Oh and Canon is arrogant that they price it higher than the Nikon D3500 which has a much more modern sensor and just a better camera all round.
And why not? The 4-digit series is the "please buy this rather than a Sony compact cam" class. The customer wants "as cheap as possible" and re-recycling old tech that you have the payed of production lines for is allowing you to give him that AND make money. The production lines that produce those sensors likely can not deliver the much more complex DualPix technology.
The 3-digit line re-uses rather current technology (24MP gen3 DualPix) and the EOS M has either the 24MP or the brand new 32MP APS-C sensor (M6-II).

I came across some wildlife shooters this week, and all of them were still using DSLRs. Professional sports photographers ditto. I use mirrorless, but if I was invested in serious telephoto lenses I'd need a very good reason to switch from DSLRs.

Images look great, but they will look even great on a R5/C, especially if you shoot landscapes. The larger sensor really makes a huge difference in how fine details are resolved.
@@borderlands6606 Wildlife and birding photography is worlds above better on R5/C than on a DSLR like a 5DIII. That is because the AF is faster and can intelligently track animals. I also find that having the ability to customize buttons to your liking is a big advantage. I have a button that switches between AI Servo and One Shot AF, and lets me be in the right mode at the press of a button. Try doing that on a 5DIII!

The thing that bothers me most about canon is the lack of in the box lens hoods for non L lens.
And they have ridiculous names, so you always have to trial and error instead of just looking at a focal length printed on the hood because it's not there.
SMALL aps-c. Eos M was a great size. I can't justify buying an aps-c that's the same price and size as entry level full frame. Besides some of us want pocket cameras for street, travel, and hiking without needing to drop the quality all the way down to 1 inch point and shoots.
Or you know, I'm moving to Sony to buy the A7c or FX3, since Fujifilm gouged their X-E4 features.

For 99% of population out there you cannot go wrong with a leader in cameras like Canon. All this trying to find flaws and faults is just nitpicking for the sake of nitpicking. Nothing is perfect, anything will have some cons, but it's still an amazing camera system regardless. People need to go back 30 years into film years (or the very first DSLRs) and see how they like those cameras even compared to the entry-level mirrorless of today.
The canon mirrorless lineup is following the dslr lineup like the 5d:r5, 6d:r6, 7d:r7 (probably)

I owned the R5. Twice. It is a great camera, and checks tons of boxes, but... as an echo-system? I looked around at my key lenses: 70-200/2.8, the RF one is a pain to use in real life with the push-pull zoom, if you are using it fast environments like indoor sports - the Sony GMII version with internal zoom is much more user friendly. The 50/1.2L is bigger, heavier and more expensive than the Sony GM equivalent which also is quieter and faster. And again, no RF version of 35/1.4, 24/1.4, etc. No third-party glass. I do really like the Canon handling (apart from that stupidly placed on/off switch), the user interface, and the colors. The R5 as a stand-alone camera is very impressive, but with an echo system, it still falls short.

Canon cripples cameras by purpose, for instance R6 looks like a great camera for video until you realise that it is crippled, aperture/shutter priority for video is blocked, it is capable but blocked, what a shame.
So if you are looking for a video camera, avoid the Canon R6, go with Sony A74.

I have used Canon for a long time but am now considering moving to Sony as the E-Mount offers more third-party lens options at less cost from Sigma, Tamron, and other manufacturers. THe R-Mount lenses perform great but, ... MAN! ... the PRICE.
All the latest Sony GM lenses out perform the Canon RF L lenses, sharper, better bokeh, faster linear focus motors, lighter, smaller and cheaper.

@yuan yeah, I use all kinds of lenses, some Sigma I series, Sigma Art series, Sony G, Sony GM and a Samyang lens. The choice for Sony is pretty endless for excellent well made lenses, I feel sorry for people who get stuck with Canon, there’s only 2 choices, cheap and plastic with slow stm motors and crappy extending focus, or super expensive L glass.

@@sergeyzakharov7326 It depends what your interest are. L mount sports and wildlife lenses are by Sigma, but there are no exotic f2.8 tele primes and zooms as with Nikon and Canon. People who need and can afford those are probably not hanging them on an RP. The Lumix S1.8 series are inexpensive, of similar size and take the same filter thread. Being videocentric they are also parfocal.
Not good. The M6 II is close to a sports camera in performance. The RP is bargain basement, and limited in a great many ways. Even in image quality, which the M6 II is superior. Save up for at least an R6, as the R isn't great, either (I owned one).

I have Canon M50 and all I want is to have 4k with reliable AF! It's not much to ask. Unfortunately Canon M50 mark ii did not deliver much improvement. I like small cameras and I hope canon will not abandon M mount. I am not going to use big R bodies and large and expensive RF lenses. I would probably go for Sony a7iv with a Sigma lenses.
A7c and many compact lenses
You’ll have a small camera with big lens.
Even an old A6300 from 2016 has what you want. An A6100 (lowest end Sony APS-C) from 2019 will blow you away.
M6 mark 2 has 4k dual pixel, much better video cam than M50, trust me.
My biggest problem with Canon currently is lenses:
1. Their pro-level gear is no longer affordable for non-pros (like myself). In the “old days” (2 years ago when EF was alive) I could afford L series lenses as a hobby photographer, and have 5. Now, their RF L-series lenses are out of reach, and the non-L lenses are unexciting.
2. They seem to be going for the “see how big and extreme we can make our lenses” instead of “here is a lens that you regular folk will give us money for”.
Their enemy (Sony) have pro grade lenses mostly at EF L pricing, that are smaller than EF (except for perhaps the 50mm, which is smaller than the RF).
Canon seem to be targeting either pro level or entry level, but the enthusiast ends up having to look elsewhere.
I like Canons RF 70-200 for the size, still the F4 version is ridiculously expensive.
I don’t like that it changes sizes. I just us the EF version.

My biggest complain is unbalanced lens line up. And Its very unortodox to me. Instead of just 85 1.8 they go 85 2 with half-macro and strange focus mechanism. Instead of "just 100mm macro" for $1000 they make $1400 100mm macro with some features, that nobody asking for, but with not really stellar IQ for modern macro lens. Instead of 70-300 4-5.6 they decide to make a longer and darker interpretation of it , i mean 100-400 5.6-8.
And there is no such thing in canon line as "mid range" lenses with sealing ang good mechanics, like Nikon 1.8 primes or Sony G or "just well built not G sony" lenses, like 85 1.8 that sealed and has great IQ.

You did hit it on the head that canon doesn't care about its rookies. That's why you will see many go to nikon and sony that actually offer affordable 35, 50, 85 mm options.

The 100-400mm f/5.6-8 is a masterstroke of a lens. Light, compact, and offers enough reach for a lot of applications. It's also compatible with TCs. And it's fairly inexpensive - both the Sony and Panasonic 70-300mm lenses cost almost twice as much while offering no substantial advantages besides weather sealing. The Sony can't accept TCs, and the Panasonic has pretty mediocre IQ.
The RF 100mm macro is expensive, but not outrageously so; thing is, it's a lens thought for specialist photographers, who represent most of the customer base of the EF version: wedding togs and true macro fiends. The first group prefer it for its versatility, as it works both as a portrait and detail lens, while the others, well, it's obvious. So the RF version offers even larger magnification, as well as spherical aberration control for portraits. But I can see why a lot of people might prefer something like the 105mm f/2.8 Nikkor-S, which offers excellent IQ and features at a very moderate price!
Agreed on the 85mm f/2, that one's a dud. Also agree on the weathersealing.
I did notice my R6 doing some inexplicable IS motions while I was not actually shooting anything, so if anything is eating at the battery life I think it is just systems being a bit too active despite not being called on. IS for example should be completely off the table unless I at least half press the shutter, which would save a lot of battery over the course of a day.
In 2010 i supplemented my analog Leica (95% Kodak slides) with digital Canon, starting with the 550D, now on the R6. With crop my most beloved lens was the 60mm Macro and now on Full-Frame it is the 1.4/85L IS (and the RF 100L Macro!). I like Canon because of the colours. I am doing a lot of portraits, and Canon skin-tones ooC are great. Canon JPEG-Quality is outstanding. If you are used to shoot slides sinces decades you will certainly love a digital camera which can produce nice results and no need to change a lot in post. This is clearly complemented with the Canon interface. I am not interested in tweaking stuff. I use my cameras to take pictures and expect perfect quality with easy use - just like a Leica M. I am not interested in technical subtilities, only in good results of my photos and intuitive handling of the camera. The only complain i have with my Canon stuff is size and weight. In the end, Canon is not a perfect, but sufficient match for my needs. Thanks for the great video and stay healthy!

Nice M6 Mark II b-roll! I've got one and considering another. I use it mostly for video (with an Atomos Ninja V to avoid the 30 minute per clip limiter). I do very much hope they continue the mount. They definitely need to make things clear. I'd like to see them take EF-M more into hybrid video photo territory.
More and more signs and rumors recently suggest that Canon is dropping EF-M altogether.

Another thing Canon (& Nikon) need to wake up and smell the coffee on is providing better (or at least some) support for 3rd party lenses on their mirrorless systems. Sure the L/S line of lenses are great and all, but they also have a great big price tag attached to them making them non-viable for a lot of shooters, also Canon's insistence on not providing a lens hood in the box for their non-L lenses can also stop as well please, if sony can spend the extra 1-2 dollars for a lens hood on all of their FE lenses so can you Canon.
I recently picked up a sigma 24-70 for my Sony A1, 10/10 would recommend.

People love Aps-C and there's no reason why Canon couldn't bring a line of RF mount cameras from 500$ to 1500$. Maybe two or three different bodies with more and more features as prize goes up that allows you to both play with Aps-C and take advantage of it, but also, if you want to, buy RF Full Frame lenses and, if you eventually upgrade to a full frame, not have the need to sell your Aps-C lenses too. Basically, they need to do the same thing you could do with EF before they brought RF into the market. You can buy either Full Frame or Aps-C cameras and lenses and you could go from one to the other without getting rid of everything in the process.
Also, this approach is perfectly possible and they could get a lot of sales from it because there's already an RF sensor with an Aps-C size in the Canon C70. This way, people who own that camera, if Canon produces Aps-C lenses, could buy them for their work instead of adapting EF glass or going with the bigger full frame ones that are unnecessary because part of the lens coverage is out of the sensor size. But also, the C70 sensor exists already so they don't have to create a new one for an Aps-C line. They just have to do two different bodies for it and give the 500$ entry one less features and more to the 1500$ one.
I doubt they can make a profitable camera for $500. APC lens can’t cover full frame image circle.
Canon's FF lineup is already very affordable to get into for anyone moving up from a modern smartphone. The 800+ price offers great options that some smartphones can't yet do. I would rather more competition in the Medium Format space. Treat FF like they did APSC a while back and just jump to larger sensor with more computational power.
I think the era of 500$ cameras is long gone. There is just no profit in that segment anymore and the time and money spent on R&D and production is better used to advance more profittable products and scale their production better. With scale even the more advanced and complex products will get cheaper. This means that in the future it will be more viable to use a high res full frame sensor and just use a crop mode for APS-C and still have a descent resolution. This way there is no production cycles wasted on actual APS-C cameras and the increased production scale of the high res full frame bodies makes each unit cheaper.
That is why I did not agree with the path that Nikon took with the Z50 and dedicated APS-C lenses for it when the lense lineup for full frame was not there yet and the race to keep customers who where willing to switch to mirrorless was still raging.
Bottom line camera manufacturers MUST keep their product lineups slim, there is no space for senseless "cheap" products or artificially added limitations anymore. The market has changed and the cheaper camera segments were eaten by smartphones.

I was that close to switch from Canon to Sony A7IV but the 4k crop is a no-go for me, I choose the R6 & keeps my old (but not that old!) EF lens that work great and produce great result!
R6 has a crop full time, at any resolution/frame rate. Sony only has it at 4K60.

tbh canon line up kinda falls behind the competition (r5 is an exception to that rule) + i have huge problems with their lenses: they're either really expensive or have somewhat bad build quality. the thing that got me switching to sony is that i realized that to match a7iv + tamron 70-180 2.8 i have to go for r6 + rf 70-200 2.8 otherwise im stuck with an adaptor and huge ef lens or f4 aperture

I wonder if the big 3 will even bother with APS-C anymore. Sony hasn't made a new APS-C sensor for their a6xxx series since 2014, the Z50 borrows a sensor from the DSLR generation if I remember correctly, and Canon has made 8 lenses in like, 9 years of the EF-M mount while releasing ~20 lenses in 2-3 years for the RF.

Canon needs RF mount APS-C cameras with IBIS and few lenses to go with them. Some 10-20 and some 18-135 or 18-200, rest can be RF-FF lenses.

I recently started photographing/videoing and getting introduced to camera stuff. Got myself 250D from Canon and I can 100% agree. If you use the live view screen (it has mirror, but half the useful options are on the live view screen, like brightness, color and grey sample or focusing modes so you really do need it all the time unless you're doing a set and forget event), the battery is done with just photographing really quickly. If you shoot video, you gotta rush to get it captured whatever you're shooting.
Another thing was a weird options system where depending on your one option or mode, your options screen looks completely different and for example figuring out how to bring the grid or histogram up took me quite a bit of googling and browsing the manual. The menus are great, but not always intuitive or practical.
Other than those, I really dig the usability of it. Really, really lovely features like 4k video, bluetooth/wlan transfer of files (compressed or raw) and remote use from phone via bluetooth/wlan. Makes it so convenient to do hands on home projects like shooting videos/pics for something and quickly transferring them for editing. Meaning that it works seamlessly as a TOOL for creative projects, where you just want good quality shots for the project, not to make taking the shots and getting them on the desk your project.
I adore my 90D but I wish there was a compelling mirrorless option from canon that packed the same punch for under $2000 USD. It’s just such a high price for entry into the mirrorless world if you’re already used to an enthusiast level camera like the 90D.

Canon's lack of commitment to the M lineup was why I started with a M50 and upgraded to a Fuji X-S10. I'd have happily stayed Canon but there was just nowhere to go without accepting a huge increase in size & weight and a huge jump in price.
I love the form factor of the M mount, and the compactness it allows the lenses. My concern about the APSC lineup is, if they introduce an R mount APSC camera, will the sheer size of the mount opening dictate a larger body size and also subsequently larger lenses.
Just pull a Viltrox or Cosina like they did for the Z-mount. Take the existing EF-M lenses and give it a fluted bottom near the flange. It'll be ugly, but it would work.
Yes. Look at Nikon Z mount APS-C. Ridiculous camera proportions, ridiculous lenses (and slow to boot because they had to artificially increase the gap to the more expensive 35mm lineup in terms of look and capability). It's all about the business, so you're better off with a brand that has a business focus on APS-C or MFT where can get lightweight native F2.8 zooms and F1.4 primes.
Can you address the fact that Adobe does such a horrible job with processing Cannon RAW files? I have an r5, came from my Sony a73 and I could not figure out for over a year why my RAW files looked so bad, even at normal ISO. I stumbled on a post that discussed it a bit and sure enough I downloaded a secondary RAW processing program, I am still in the 30 day trial, but I will probably end up paying over $100.00 for it. Months of shooting I was disappointed in the RAW files of the R5 and it was Adobe all along. My old a7r even in the RAW files you could see the clarity and sharpness in the eye, 2 years later I am getting back to that with my R5:)
Canon really needs a lower end body to compete with the a7c as well as a line up of small primes for smaller body. The RF mount cameras are great but they are all thicc beast. Come up with something more sleek and smaller ffs.
Canon cameras are fine, but just know you're buying into a camera that has been deliberately designed by the manufacturer to be about 75 per-cent of what the manufacturer is capable of actually doing.
For example, Canon has been capable of delivering us 4K to budget Canon users since about 2014-2015, but they waited until just before people started jumping ship to other platforms like Sony and Panasonic to release 4k (and even then it was crippled 4k with a heavy crop and only at 24fps).
Tldr: If you buy a Canon camera (other than a flagship Canon camera), just know your Canon camera is an intentionally crippled camera.

Canon is using an ancient architecture ancient OS and ancient CPUs to run their firmware, that's why we have so many limitations. The image and movie processing is handled by ASICs, and it executes specific tasks controlled by the cpu. The CPU runs only and only the menu and manages all the other specific circuits in the camera, like AF, lens drive, IBIS, liveview, image pipeline etc. Even the histogram is a pretty significant task for the CPU. Most of the datastream does not interact with the CPU
These explained why battery drop so fast, why camera easy overheat. Ancient processor normally slow, if want fast need overclock it with higher power then overheat.
@@myocean3228 no, the CPU is low power. The R5 and R6 overheats by design. There is a single component that overheats. This performs video processing and it's designed by canon. Usually realtime video processing is handled by ASICs or FPGAs, not CPUs

I recently sold my fuji kit and picked up an EOS R and the 35mm 1.8. I have no complaints about the EOS R - in terms of dynamic range, autofocus, and file flexibility it's an upgrade over my x-pro3. Prime lens options, on the other hand, leave a lot to be desired. I shoot portraits, and while I hear the RF 50mm 1.2 is amazing, it's so, so expensive. And the RF 50mm 1.8 is underwhelming until stopped down to f/4 or so.
I'm beginning to regret not picking up a used Nikon Z7 and the 50mm 1.8 S. A strong set of Canon primes at non-exotic apertures would be really nice, but they're nowhere on the roadmap.
According to photons to photos, the EOS R has about one third of a stop better dynamic range than the X-Pro3 at base ISO. You're going to be hard-pressed to see the difference in real life in terms of file flexibility unless you use technologically obsolete software like lightroom and misuse the detail slider, in which case the software will make you think xtrans files are worse, which they are not.
@@problemat1que The file flexibility I'm talking about is mostly with color. In my experience shooting fuji for 3 years, getting clean, neutral colors out of x-trans files, even in capture one, can be difficult. They're pleasing to look at, but can get a little muddy if that makes sense. Something about the x-trans sensor, maybe.
I never used lightroom for fuji files.
And regarding what photons to photos says, all I can really say is that in my experience with the EOS R so far, I am noticing files that look cleaner, including in shadow recovery. But the Nikon Z system would be an improvement there, too.

It’s important that you evaluate a leading company like Canon to show that there is room for improvement, in this *Extremely* dynamic industry.
I own the Canon EOS R3 and the Canon C70 and although I am happy with the C70, I AM NOT HAPPY with the R3. Essentially Canon has not given their most expensive EOS-R camera any love.
Now I do email Canon Support and I am a CPS Gold Member so I reach out to them as well to suggest new features while providing supporting information on why the suggestions are beneficial, but alas nothing yet
In short, the Canon EOS R3 is NOT a good video camera... and, there are a handful of reasons why:
1. NO Custom WhiteBalance setting in LiveView mode for Video. They added it to Photo, not Video. Sucks... the C70 can do it.
2. NO Histogram and Levels while recording.. DPREview you nailed that. It sucks.
3. NO ability to disable IBIS but keep lens IS enabled. SUCKS. Wobble anyone? This would fix that.
4. NO Atomos compatibility. I.E. you can't trigger recording from the camera and there is no RAW out.
5. NO shutter angle, XF-AVC, Cinema RAW Lite, and Face Only/Prioritty autofocus. In Canons defense they usually only reserve this stuff for cinema. But still... would be great.
6. NO oversampled 1080p. Arguably the BEST film mode. You can do it on the C70. And although the R3 has oversampled 4k, it has pixel binned 1080. Sucks.
7. NO ability to map a button to format storage. Very useful in my c70. Use it all the time. So kinda sucks I have to menu dive to do it in the R3.
There are a handful of more suggestions but that is what is on my mind right now. Like I said, I reach out to Canon a lot. Probably every 2 weeks. I write lengthy emails about the industry, competitors, and suggestions for firmware updates.... so, it's not like I am just sitting in my house bitching.
That said, maybe there's a power in numbers? If you guys own a Canon R3 and also are burning for a good firmware update.... then message support about it! They'll transfer your email to the development team.

Also, the lack of oversampled 1080p is more likely to do with sensor design limitations than if it was actually possible. You'll see on plenty of other cameras that there are limitations based around resolution and frame rate, just because every sensor can't do everything.
Plus Cannon has to stop hobbling the autofocus, I’ve heard the R5C isn’t nearly as good and of course then it had the recall…and no IBIS.
No IBIS makes sense, since Canon had so many issues with the R5 overheating, with poor recovery times. The sensor probably needed to be rigidly mounted to be able to transfer enough heat out of it to stop the camera from randomly shutting down.

Going to another system currently - I don't think it makes much sense except for few specialists not well served by their current brand. All major manufacturers do have awesome innovative products. What Canon and Nikon don't offer in mirrorless-mount lenses can be adapted.

Honestly I think you nailed with the zoom comment. Their Zoom Lenses are just abysmal. The RF 70-200 f2.8 is fantastic. It's arguably the best out there currently. However, the 100-500 is pretty quick but the focus issues on that are just horrid. Meanwhile Sony has the 200-600 that's internal zoom and it glides like hot butter. The only thing out of Canon now is that they're making 200mm and 300mm primes .. and you really have to wonder where their head is at. Especially considering that if you want to use the 100-500 with a telephoto to get to 600, you're giving up 200mm of usable range (300-500 -> 420-700 1.4x & 600-1000 2x). Add that to the fact that the Bokeh when focusing on distant objects is ugly as all get out... and you really start to wonder where their head is at.

I have strongly insisted since July 2020 at the latest that Canon wouldn't release APS-C camera body and lens in RF system for not cinema camera, but still camera. The reasons I presume are shown below.

Customers and users who want a budget price camera are mainly classified as two groups.
The persons belong to the one group could not concern about specifications and could be satisfied with camera kit like EF-M system. Several years later, they almost wouldn't buy a next interchangeable lens camera. The other words, provide of EF-M and EF-S systems are worth keeping unless net deficit.
While the persons belong to the other group couldn't have enough budget, they are interested in photography and/or videography and they want to improve their skill and equipments. The other words, most important thing for them is not image sensor size, but simply price. Their ideal camera is a budget price one using "high speed present generation" FF sensor. I'm calling this camera "R9" which is similar in design to R6 with EVF and flip screen in spite of intensive cost reduction. One of the biggest missions on "R9" is a bridge the gap in videography between M50s and mid range like R6. While Canon well understood Sony APS-C series like A6*** occupy this gap several years ago, they didn't take measures during long years. On viewpoint of videography, Canon is building their ecosystem, including "R9", R6, R5, R3, R5C, C70, C300iii, C500ii and so on.

Regarding APS-C still camera, the rest meaning of existence is crop effect. However, it's extremely difficult the balance between price and high performance; high speed burst shooting, durability etc. I'd like to remind, especially, photographers who need high speed burst shooting that the rolling shutter effect using equivalent technology on image sensor is directly proportional to not image sensor size, but numbers of pixels. The sales period of 7D2 which price was roughly $2000 was about four years; from 2014 to 2018. If the price of 7D2 successor would be almost as same as R6, the demand of this successor should be very small. Therefore, I think "R9" should have high priority to 7D2 successor.
I'm interested in "Kokomo" VR platform. If it would be successful a few years later, many people should have headsets for "Kokomo". Therefore, it could increase demand for "EOS VR System" contents shot by professional videographers and filmmakers. Of course, "R5C and RF5.2mm F2.8 L Dual Fisheye" is the best equipments for "EOS VR System".

I never bought a camera, going way back to the Kodak DC3400, with the idea of it recording video. I typically forget that whatever camera is in my hand can records videos. I buy a camera to take stills, period. Even my cell phone, I forget that it can record videos most of the time.
I would like an R6 type with more MPs however.
I very recently replaced my, now ancient, Nikon D5000 (not a 500) with an R5, and while I'm blown away by it, it's also not really meeting the hype for me.
What I'm really blown away by is the advancements in AI processing that can take the rather crappy (color noise) output from the R5 and make it awesome. Without DXO PureRaw and the like, I'd be very disappointed with how far short the native images fall from the hype - clearly I was naive about how much post processing I should expect.
Also, the AF system is a constant battle for me. I get that I'm still figuring out what settings I have to use in which situations - but from the hype I wasn't expecting to have this struggle.
And the number of hot pixels on a long exposure is just sickening - maybe I have a bottom bin sensor but hot pixel expectations weren't covered in any of the reviews I've seen so I don't really know how normal my experience is. But it's a lot more than 4x my old D5000 (12MP vs 45MP), it's more like 40x!
Sound like you should have bought a used Canon 5Diii.
I've gone back to many old raw image and processed them with DxO's DeepPrime noise reduction, which has brought new life to them. I do NOT want baked-in 2021 noise reduction in raw files, when who knows what 2028 noise reduction technology could do.
This would be the nail in Canon's coffin for me if I was shopping for another system. DXO can restore a crazy amount of detail, but when that detail is obliterated by the camera before you can even touch the RAW, it makes the effort futile. Only Pentax does something similar, but nobody's really shopping them. Every other brand is sane in this matter, for whatever reason.

Remember when Canon was the laughing stock in terms of innovation before 2019? They have come a long way. But I'm still upset at how long it took them.
I am not a professional photographer, so I am OK with my current APS-C camera, the Canon T5i. I have lenses and filters to do strange things as needed. I am going to wait for the mirrorless wars to settle down a bit, and them MAYBE I'll see about getting one. One thing bad I heard about the Canon lineup was overheating in long videos. That wouldn't be a show stopper for me, since I really don't do videos, but it's something to consider.
You guys are right on the money about Canon. The company needs to $#!* or get off the pot with a more entry level FF R-series (to replace the R and RP)... AND they need to introduce a couple APS-C R-series sooner rather than later.
I don't think they can accomplish what they need to with a single APS-C camera. There are two markets they need to address: One is a high end mirrorless 7D Mark II sports/action camera while the other needs to fill the role of the M50/M50 Mark II as a fairly affordable "vlogger" camera. The 7DII DSLR and M50-series have been their two biggest successes in the last 6 or 8 years.
The R7 (mirrorless 7DII) should be a robust model with no more than 24MP, dual card slots, very fast readout to avoid rolling shutter issues, form factor similar to R5/R6 and ability to share the BG-R10 grip those cameras use. It needs IBIS and an AF system similar to R3, though perhaps without Eye Control to keep cost reasonable. The 7DII was around $1700 or $1800 US when intro'd... But 8 years later we should expect an R7 to be $2000 US or a little more. They may need to use other mods to keep the camera from being too expensive. Perhaps it could be electronic shutter only (like Nikon Z9), though it needs a sensor protector to quickly drop in place whenever the lens is removed. An E shutter would allow very fast frame rates as well as silent mode, but should also have something user adjustable that audibly let's us know when shots are being taken.
The M50/M50II replacement is a different matter. I don't know if it will need to be 24MP too or if it might increase to 32.5MP (like M6 Mark II and 90D). Emphasis will be on video, which I know little about. This model needs to be affordable... Around $1000 US or a little less (competes with Nikon Z50 and Sony a6400?). Whether it has a built in EVF or uses a separate one might be dictated by price. A problem with the separate EVF now available for M-series is that it occupies the hot shoe, so accessory flash can't be used at the same time. That needs to be addressed.
Canon has stated there will be no EF-S style R-series lenses and there don't need to be. But they will still need at least a few "crop only" lenses. They just don't need to have a modified bayonet that prevents them being attached to the FF cameras (as is the case with the EF-S lenses for Canon APS-C DSLRs). There are already at least two such lenses in the Canon lens roadmap: An 18-45mm "kit" lens and an ultra wide 10-24mm. Other than those, full frame capable RF mount lenses can serve fine for now, but eventually Canon will need to develop at least a few more crop specific lenses.
Canon needs to get the APS-C R-series cameras to market quickly. Nikon and Sony already have them. And Nikon is undoubtedly working on a mirrorless D500 since it was one of their most successful models. It is just a matter of time until Sony ups their game further. Fuji already has competitive cameras, only lacks a fast action capable AF system. OM Systems has figured out an AF system, though they are still M4/3.

I'm not saying R7 is bad by any means. Just the opposite, in fact. It is a fantastic camera for the money! Amazing that it has an AF system similar to the $6000 R3, at 1/4 the price! (Also amazing is that the R10's AF is similar, too, for even less.)
I predict Canon will sell R7 as fast as they can make them. I bet Sony is nervous, since the R7 out classes the a6600 in many respects, but only costs $100 more. Nikon is probably shocked, too.
Canon needs some additional RF-S lenses quickly. There are a number of RF full frame lenses that will work well on the R7, but for example an ultra wide is still needed. Also perhaps a smaller macro and a mire upscale wqlk-aroind lens.
I may change my mind, bur don't plan to run out to buy R7. They don't meet my immediate needs very well. I would like to work with that AF system and a few other features of the camera, but really need a vertical grip and am not a fan of the revised control layout. Regarding the latter, sure I could learn to use it, but it is so different from other cameras and switching between them will be just asking for trouble. I am not sure why Canon felt the need to mess with already very good ergonomics and control layout.
Based on all I've seen so far, I probably will be highly recommending the R7 to people, even if it's not quite right for me peronally.

I am very interested in the R7 mainly because of its video capabilities, as I'm not a pro photographer by any means (though I enjoy photography as a hobby). Like you said, the pricing is brilliant, I think it's an awesome all-rounder with few compromises.
I currently have an SL3 so I was wondering if the R7 would feel to large and heavy (as opposed to the R10), but today I tried out the 90D and it is actually more comfortable to hold (my hands are large). So I've made up my mind, R7 it is.

I haven't shot with SL3, but have a Canon M5 that I found uncomfortably light and small after using 7D-series and 5D-series cameras, all with grips, for many years. I ended up putting an L-bracket on the M5, which helped a little. I'm still not as quick handling it as I like... Small buttons and dials in unfamiliar places!

As far as I'm concerned, I'm only shooting photos, that's what I bought my camera for initially. So what I actually would have liked to see from any camera producer, is a camera that is dedicated to photos only but with loads of image quality, with lowlight capabilities, especially Canon. If I really want to shoot video, I've got my cellphone always at the ready.
I'm a photographer and not a videographer. I know it was much easier for the camera manufactures to sell cameras with video capabilities because that was much easier to built into the camera then improvement to the picture quality. Nowadays however, with the unbelievable photo manipulation apps like ON1 I am much more inclined to shoot with a much higher ISO then I used to and you do not see the difference in quality. Still I would have liked to see this possibility of shooting with high ISO in a camera that doesn't cost me an arm and a leg instead of having to invest in an app that can do that.
I wish the R6 was in the 30-34mp size - I think 2mp is such a step back! I like Canon colors better than the Sony, but the A74 is very compelling-- It just needs a faster burst rate

I wonder how the A1 compares in CIPA ratings with the battery grip. In theory, that should double it to a hot 1060 shots, right? (And then you're closer to what the Z9 and R3 have in terms of body size, anyway.)
I've had my A1(w/o battery grip) for 5 months now and have only shot around 4k photos, but in that time I find that just being powered on eats the battery, and the number of photos I take is less of a factor. When navigating through the menu, it consumes roughly 1% battery per minute. However I went out the other day to shoot some wildlife, shot around 400 photos over the course of a few hours, only used 10% of the battery.

As a long time Canon user, I just want to have 3 things from Canon.
1. New battery. My experience with LP-E6NH on photo only is decent, but once start working on video it drains faster than I down some shots.
2. Mid-end lenses or get Sigma/Tamron/Tokina/Samyang/Viltrox to do it for them. I don't mind the top end L is expensive, it's not going to be in my bag.
However the entry level lenses from Canon RF can be quirky and not enough. If the rumours of RF20-50/f4 pancake is true. I can finally stop using EF 20-35/f2.8 or Tamron EF 17-28 for daily use.
3. Improve the app on mobile devices. Faster transfer of photos to smartphone/tablet/laptop. And less clumsy startup settings to establish connections. We need the faster Bluetooth/NFC pairing.
Canon has a better app than others but that's because Sony/Nikon/Panasonic/Fuji e.t.c are all terrible or non-existent. You can't beat the Smartphone nowadays, so integrate well is the only way.

I refuse to buy any Canon camera BECAUSE it's the biggest player. Other companies produce products at least as good and I feel it's my duty to support the competition.
I’m been using canon scene 1976. It’s easy to use. I’m currently a M -50 user and use EF lens with booster and adapters. I agree with Jordon the lower end of the mirror less full frame needs more updating for me to make the jump, but I’m just an enthusiast not a pro.

Hi, always enjoy your videos. You mentioned something today as an aside. I think I understand, but can you expand on shutterless cameras? Also, what is the actual market size today for digital photography with phones taking such a chunk out of the business? Beyond working pros and amateur enthusiasts? How do the manufacturers survive. Personally, I can’t tell the difference in video quality watch your videos on UA-cam. I do print some photos, but what is the financial incentives for Nikon, Canon & Sony to go much further in R&D? Just curious.

Fun to watch pessimist prime go up against rose eyed wonder. But seriously, enjoyed the two-sided review. Have to admit, I am biased toward Canon. For me, the biggest points that Sad Eyed Sally made was about market segmentation and low end offerings.
Segmentation: It seems Canon is stuck in time believing there truly is enough market demand for the segmentation they court with their line up. In my opinion, it’s time for a single mount line up that markets to beginners, advanced users and professionals. I would find a way to reintroduced Rebel line up that is based on the RF mount with low end lenses that caters to beginners. Then the Rebel line needs consolidation. The M6 II is a terrific camera for vloggers. Let’s face it, Canon must capture that market and neither the overheating R5/6 nor the under powered M6 compares with Sony. So, form of M6, power of R5, and no overheating would be a winner. Finally, I still like my G7 X III but damn, I wish it would record 4K without overheating. I can’t figure why Sony manages to get around video heating and Canon can’t. Surprised that didn’t come up in your comments, Eeyore.
