Definitely improve their firmware upgrade policy. I guess A7III could still be much improved just by simply porting their new menu system. It would not undercut A7IV sales as whoever needs this body would buy it, but us entry level user would still be happy with these small improvements.

    • @willfullyinformed
      @willfullyinformed 2 роки тому +8

That would be amazing. I would love for them to start implementing modernizing updates across the board. When they improve in one area, let everyone else who spent thousands of dollars enjoy and experience that as well. A7III is not out of the question, we should get to enjoy at least the software/organization the A7IV has.

I think this is a great way to get more longevity and maintain value in their older cameras. Considering the CPU and shipping constraints we are looking to be faced with.
So many users of older models would support an upgrade to their menu system and surely it can't be difficult to implement in a firmware upgrade

I've also found all those customizable buttons sound great but if you're renting, don't use the camera that often, or use switch between cameras it's not easy to remember. Then those features don't always work the same way in video as in photo. Imagine if you bought a car and they had a bunch of unlabeled controls that could be reassigned. Everything about Sony feels very techie and complex. If you only own one camera, you're the only person using it, and you operate it on a regular basis then it should be fine.

I’m an a7r IVA user. I’d love to see more computational features. Specifically a built in focus stacking mode like Nikon-even if I have to stack myself on a computer. Would love to see in-camera pixel shift feature, with a clear way to see if you ran into any issues with the stack. I do prefer processing it myself, but I would love to be able to check if things are working on camera. Today I tether to capture one, take the series of images, then combine images in software, look for any issues then start over if I need to.
In terms of hardware features. I don’t need all the speed of the A1, but its stacked sensor let’s ya do pixel shift with a flash at 1/200s. The a7R IVA is limited to 1/8s when using flash and pixel shift. Getting up at or faster than 1/125s would be welcomed.

What I really wish for is some fine tuning to the body design. I love the rangefinder style of the A6xxx and a7C and paired with small, aperture-ringed lenses theyre just so wonderful to use. They almost feel like a Leica to me. And in that vein I wish that the a6xxx series should be just a bit taller and slightly thicker. And the a7C needs to have the same rubber as the older Sony cameras as it just looks way better than that new rubber, which looks cheap IMO.

I am holding out for Sony to give us an updated a6600 with better IBIS and/or active stabilization (present on newer, cheaper models) and a faster processor to reduce rolling shutter. I shot Sony for years, but switched over to the Canon R5 about a year and a half ago. I originally got an RP and then an R6 to dabble with, but two things really pulled me to the Canon, with the biggest being the ergonomics. Sony really needs to fix their ergonomics, and the biggest thing they can do is just move the grip like half a cm further away from the mount. Also big: dust removal....my Sony cameras were dust magnets and even with regular cleaning. I'd end up with dozens of spots on my landscape images that I'd need to clone later. I think I've had to clone like 10 spots on my Canon bodies in a year and a half. Total. So yeah, ergonomics and dust removal.

I am thankful Sony is so innovative and they really put pressure on Nikon and Canon to improve as far as mirrorless goes, and that is the only thing I like about Sony. I could care less when the A9/A9II or A1 came out. I've shot the first two and although the A1 and A9 II felt okay, they still felt like holding a turd, compared to my flagship D5/D6. I think even with the grip, the Sony camera's just don't feel as good and I also know it equals build quality and weather sealing too. Sony admitted the A9/A9 II were not as well built or weather sealed compared to the Nikon and Canon flagship's, which have an integrated grip. Sony also did some weird things like put the lens release on the wrong side of the mount, the menus, the ugly and not so nice to hold squared off bodies, etc. Sony is a consumer electronics company that entered the camera market less than a decade ago as far as stills. They have done some amazing things and I admit their image quality and specs all seem great. I'm just maybe old school, but I prefer the look and feel of Canon and Nikon gear. They may be just tools, but ergonomics and build quality, the way things work and feel is important. Sony just does not look or feel right to me, and sadly they are even more expensive. An A1 with two CFexpress cards and the vertical grip is approaching $8,000 with taxes. Nikon's Z9 is made better, looks better, and has much better battery, video spec's, etc,...all for $1,000-$1,500 less! Most Nikon lenses for mirrorless are sharper than their Sony counterparts as well. Sony finally updated their 70-200mm, but overall Sony lenses are not as good as their Nikon or Canon counterparts. There maybe exceptions and Sony might be good enough, but I think Nikon has finally matched Sony specs and AF. I just feel Nikon does things right, but to each their own. If you like and use Sony, that is cool. They are just tools, and I'm sure you're happy.

The bang/buck ratio is very differently skewed depending on your needs. For instance, Sony have no equivalent to the 40mm f/2 Z Nikkor (cheap, rugged, fast, lightweight prime), the 24-70mm f/4 S (it's either larger f/2.8 constant zooms, the 28-75mm Tamron, or the underwhelming Zony 24-70mm f/4), or the 50-275mm DX zoom (no real alternative, Sony's 55-210mm lens SUCKS - I owned two and both were crap). One can assemble a very competent, light and compact 35mm kit on Nikon at an unbeatable price/quality ratio, as long as what's on offer is adequate for the user.
Of course, Sony do have all of those Tamron and Sigma lenses that are very desirable, as well as their own extraordinary optics, like the 200-600mm G and 20mm f/1.8 G, but I feel like the Alpha system is still lacking in some "bread-and-butter" areas.

It keeps changing to the programmed commands every time I try to move the focus point. The A7C is a perfect size for street photography and travel. It just needs more resolution and a joy stick.

The lack of 10-bit 422 options in their hybrid cameras was the major reason why I didn't go with Sony when I switched systems. Their IBIS also wasn't great, and that was another factor that lost them this potential customer. Of course, now they're starting to expand the options, but at this point, it's too late, and these options are only in the expensive cameras. Maybe in 10 yeas if I want to switch away from Lumix, although I kind of doubt it. I've been blown away by the quality of these little cameras.

I've been a Sony user ever since the NEX-7. It was dumb luck that I started my photographic journey with their APS-C line merely a year or so ahead of the release of the α7 series. Couldn't ask for much more from their nifty cameras. They've rarely gotten in the way of making decent photos. Truth be told, I'm often excited to see how they push the industry forward.

And if they do all go full frame I guess I'll be selling a bunch of lenses and a camera lol. I have thought about upgrading to the A74 and still could use APSC lenses but kind of a waste. Personally, I think it is important to keep smaller sensor cameras around for people new to photography or videography. Because they are normally lower in cost than the full frame models. Which enables people with smaller budgets to enter the world of photography or video filmmaking without breaking the bank. When I hear people say that Sony should drop APS-C cameras, or Panasonic should drop their M4/3 line, it annoys me. Because it's really a narrow way of thinking. And they're ignoring the effect it would have on people who can't afford the higher end cameras.
That being said, I am VERY happy with my A7iv. And I'm also interested in playing with the GH6 to see what that can do. I get the autofocus I want from my A7iv. But, from what I've seen of the GH6, it is really an impressive M4/3 camera.
Anyway. Great job. You made excellent points on things you'd like to see change in future Sony cameras. Love your content. Choi.

I do a lot of concert photo/video stuff, primarily because most of my friends are indie musicians, but also because I like indie shows. My current options for photo and/vids are a Pixel 5a I got recently cheap, a Sony ZV-1, and a Sony A7S II I got a while back refurbished. Obviously the A7S II should in theory always be the first choice, but it's an annoyingly bulky beast, even with just its kit zoom, when you're mostly there for the show and it's a 3-4 band night. The AI-driven Pixel 5a produces pretty random, weird and/or unnatural pics results with typical small club shows. When it's on point, it's impressive if a bit unreal, but it's unreliable when there's a lot of stage activity. The very conveniently compact ZV-1 is not intended for club lighting, but if I shoot at its max ISO and use *lots* of AI post-processing, I can get some pretty nice results, but it's time consuming. It seems that sensor, lens, and AI tech is at the point that something around the size of the ZV-1 could be made that would blow away the best imaging you can get from the best smartphones and from what you would get from current M4/3's and maybe APC's, so....maybe Sony could have some fun playing around with that.

I really feel that when the a7iv was released, as well as looking back at the a7iii, most of the drawbacks that reviewers love to harp on are really insignificant to the end user. For example, “oh I hate that the LCD screen is not bright enough compared to the competition.” The reality is, I live in a place in Texas where the sun and weather is brutal and I’ve never had issues viewing the screen. And “oh the grip is not deep enough” etc. “Oh it doesn’t look sexy like the Fuji.”
Granted some of the cons, I feel are legit but it’s mostly pertinent to the video aspect of it and what it can’t do vs another mirrorless camera like the Panasonics that have great in body stabilization. Only the end user knows what they need. For me, great auto eye focus is high on the priority list, inexpensive third party glass is important for those of us on a budget and very good ISO. Sony checks all of that off. I don’t care that the SD card 1 & 2 are out of order. Don’t care that the body is not sexy enough. Don’t care that the Grip may not be deep enough.
    Sony does the job. Period.

That's a lot of the qualms they have though. I like my Sony cameras but they just 'do the job'. Some reviewers think it should be more aesthetically and/or ergonomically pleasing (don't care about the first, do care about the second). I think they should be more intelligent and integrate within our software ecosystems. Things like the menus, the companion app, the lack of security, no built in gps matter more to me. Also, why is there a 30s limit to the shutter before bulb? I think Sony is a hardware first company that needs to be dragged, kicking and screaming into the next decade. There are many, MANY things they could fix via firmware alone, but they insistently refuse to.

Adding my two cents (landscape, architecture photographer shooting Sony, often travelling):
    - Body: A7C with their 42 megapixel sensor (to keep costs down cut corners on blazing frame rates, viewfinder, and also video)
    - Body software: Add longer exposure options past 30 seconds, focus stacking, 30 second self-timer, lower native ISO (?)
    - Lenses: Lightweight, high quality zoom lenses (similar to Nikon's 14-30mm and 24-200mm, can cut corners on aperture)
(Yes, I realize Nikon has all of these things, except for a really compact Z7ii; if they make one with a flippy screen I'll switch to Nikon in a heartbeat.)

I have 2 things they could off the bat improve on. One is physical other could be firmware.
Firmware- focus bracketing- something similar to canon where you activate it and set your settings then you could view in live view hit shutter and it would shoot and then just sit live until your next composition is ready. Trigger the shutter and it automatically shoots the bracket again. This would be a really awesome addition for any macro and landscape photographer!
Physical- a camera with a flippy screen that’s bi directional like fujis and not a full flip out screen.
These two improvements would make a lot of sense. But I understand it’s probably not video centric so not too useful for the hybrid peeps.
I’d be interested to hear thoughts about this...👍
