@@WhoCulture In the American movie with Paul McGann, the master explained the Dr's obsession with Earth as the fact that his mother was human yet in the Timeless Children we find out the original Dr as a child came from another dimension and brought regeneration to the Timelords. Was the American story version completely thrown out except for the Dr # and where does Peter Cushing fit into the timeline?

I'm surprised Turn Left didn't make the list, an episode that hardly features the Doctor and shows what would happen without their actions (and many of their friends dying to try and save the day) still feels very impactful.

I have a hypothesis that the being we know as The Doctor is from Gallifrey's future (from a strictly linear subjective viewpoint) and for reasons yet unknown was sent back to Gallifrey's past. It's a bootstrap paradox. The Gallefreyans learned to regenerate from the Timeless Child, who is a future Gallefreyean for whom that's a natural part of their biology, who was sent back in time, from whose biology Gallefreyans learned to regenerate....

I recognise compiling a top-ten list like this is always gonna be a toss-up but I CANNAE BELIEVE you didn't include Midnight (companionless, and the Doctor actually loses, helpless, only saved by the NPC stewardess's sacrifice) or Heaven Sent (easily the best episode the show has ever put out while being completely resistant to all pre-existing formulae for the its stories)

For me, Blink is the best of the modern shows. I say that because prior to it being out, I would borrow the DVDs from Netflix and watch them on my own. My wife and young children were curious of what I was watching so I explained it to them as best as I could and my wife asked, "Do you think it's appropriate for children?" to which I said, "Oh yeah! It started out as a kid's show back in the '60s and this modern one is fairly campy," so they all gathered around so we could watch it as a family, starting on the episode I currently had queued up for viewing.
Which was Blink. (I'm still laughing whenever I think of that time!)
After it was over, the kids were quiet, the wife was, "Okay, I don't think that's for us," despite me saying that was a *very* unusual episode. So we quit the show. And then five minutes later, I hear screaming from upstairs. I run up to find my wife clutching her chest. She then tells me she was using the restroom and when she went to leave, our two girls--maybe 5 and 8 at the time--were standing frozen in the doorway with scary faces and arms reaching for her! Imagine watching Blink as your first Dr. Who show and opening the door to see that!
Needless to say, they were devout fans of the show after that.

There's no way people see Sleep No More in the same light as Love and Monsters! Sleep No More was incredibly well executed and a really clever concept imo.
I remember being about 12 or 13 when that episode aired, but I was a 13 year old who was scared of everything lol. So my dad and I had devised a plan for that series where he would watch each episode live, then we'd decide if it was too scary for me.
Fast forward to now and I'm watching through the whole of new who in order (because I've never done that before and there's a lot of episodes I've missed) and I reach Capaldi's era and I don't remember _any_ of the episodes... apart from Sleep No More - an episode that scared me so much just from a summary from my dad that it stuck in my brain for ~8 years when all the others faded

@@davidharshman7645 that honestly makes a lot of sense, Sleep No More is terrifying. I guess my question for you would be, what's different about Sleep No More that makes it too uncomfortable to watch compared to other creepy episodes?
A lot of DW episodes are written to be deliberately uncomfortable/scary (waters of mars, silence in the library, blink, midnight are all classic ones I can think of off the top of my head) but most of them are highly acclaimed, so what is it about Sleep No More that makes it different? I do think folk are a little hard on “Love and Monsters” the floor was opened for young fans to come up with an enemy that hadn’t been seen before that scared them, and their classmates.
The writers then had the job or working around this totally new creature that had no established backstory, a very little way of involving other story threads. It was quite literally a young fan design, that had the brief of being “unique” and that was it.
So with that as the brief, I don’t think they actually did as a bad as many think.

"The girl who waited' ... terrible, terrible - she waited 40 years and became bitter and twisted ... Rory faithfully and lovingly waited thousands - without question.
This episode exposed Amy in way that few have really considered - whilst demonstrating the wholesomeness of Rory.
Now, it is true that Amy did 'sacrifice' herself at the end to be with Rory (via "The Angels Take Manhattan") - but, that it was even considered a 'sacrifice' had my head swiveling in directions it does not normally rotate...

That is my biggest issue with the episode and with Amy overall. I feel like she is a bit selfish especially toward Rory. I like that they ended up together alone in the end but it would have been nice if she had been nicer to him before he died a few times.

    • @Croftice1
      @Croftice1 Рік тому +3

There's difference between Amy's and Rory's situation. Sure the lone Centurion waited 2000 years, but he knew, he'd get Amy in the end, he was assured, that she'll exit the Pandorica and be alright. Rory had a clear goal. Just wait for ages and move the box, if needed. Quite simple. I mean, yes, it's a remarkable feat, even the Doctor praised him for that, but compared to Amy, he had the easier path.
Now Amy on the other hand was promised, that they'll rescue her. She waited almost 40 years with mortal danger lurking there wia the handbots, if they got her, she'd die. So she had to hide and hope, that Rory and the Doctor would come for her. First couple of days she'd wait patiently, but when days became months, months became years, years went for a 4th decade, she lost all hope. All she had to focus on was survival. So don't bullshit me with comparing Amy's situation to Rory's. All he had to do was waiting. She had to hope and survive. And after few decades lost the hope and focused on survival alone. Like sure, it's not the Doctor's or Rory's fault, but that's the general situation. They gave her assurance, that she'll be rescued, while from her viewpoint, no rescue came, she survived on her own almost 40 years.

@@Croftice1 Amy always knew the that Rory (and the Doctor) was coming to save her ... at this point she knew that Rory had already sacrificed millennia for her and was never, ever going to abandon her.
Latter on she repaid Rory by fully abandoning him - over her 'inability to have children', because 'she loved him just so much', as she swanned about the glamour catwalks and celebrity photo-shoots.
For her 'the girl who waited' was just about her lost youth and nothing more...

In hindsight, it kind of explains why the Master was on his last regeneration during Tom Baker's era of Doctor Who. Essentially timelords have 12 regeneration cycles and with the Doctor being of unknown origin being able to regenerate more than 12 times kind of gives you a reason to question why the Doctor essentially regenerated every 2 or 3 seasons or series while the Master technically cheated at the end of Keeper of Traken to get another life before being resurrected for the time war and eventually hiding at the end of the universe as professor Yana.

    Love the sweater, Ellie.
By the time I had decided I wanted to watch Doctor Who, the show was already in the Matt Smith era. So I researched about where I should start. One of the highest rated episodes on IMDB was Blink, so that's where I started. I was immediately hooked. The perfect standalone episode to get a sense of the show. At that point, I went back to the beginning of the Eccleston season and started binging there. So far, the only disappointing season I've seen is the first season of Jodie Whitaker (whom I love) and that was mostly due to the writing IMO. I still also occasionally binge high rated episodes/stories from the classic era.

That and Susan leaving, the death of Adric and a few others should of made the list.

In my opinion, The Timeless Children is objectively a good story and an interesting concept. The problems in my opinion were that it was first, of course, The Doctor was the timeless child but also it was done in 2020. A time when it would’ve been impossible to give more or walk back the parts people didn’t like (more on that below). However, ignore the timeless child being the Doctor and it’s a good story in my opinion.
But just think about it. Imagine if it had turned out that The Master was The Timeless Child and he knew it but lied to hurt The Doctor, then the Doctor we met in Fugitive is a future version of herself that lied because she already knew how the conversation unfolded. Or if it turned out The Timeless Child was one of the founders of Galifrey and either Rassilon (which my phone always insists on changing to “Randolph”), Omega, or The Other had lied about being the timeless child- or all 3 lied and the other 2 knew the secret. Then it’s revealed The Master destroyed Gallifrey the way he did because he was mad about The Founders of Gallifrey lying about their origin. Heck, if they made The Timeless Child a future version of Jack that had evolved to live entire lives like that.
Basically, pick any possibility on who it is instead of the Doctor, rewatch the episode and you might find yourself thinking “that’s a weird decision, I still don’t like it, but fine whatever”.

maybe slightly controversially I really enjoyed sleep no more - I think what makes doctor who so special is that it has so few limits on what type of story we can expect - obviously the bulk of the episodes need to be a certain form factor to maintain story/character arcs and keep the general vibe of the show but some of the best episodes in my opinion have been a few in each series that do something new (although admittedly I was not a fan of love and monsters so there's a limit to this)

Not "everyone" wanted to see more Paul McGann. Definitely not me. The FoxTV movie was crap.
I put the John Hurt War Doctor as Doctor 8.5, as I put Peter Cushing's Doctor as Doctor 1.5 (the movies came out while the 1st Doctor (William Hartnell) was still on the air, and before the 2nd Doctor (Patrick Troughton).
EDIT: OK, I re-watched the Cushing movies, and they are absolutely NOT part of the Whoverse, no matter what they say that they are "based on".
But, does that put the Fugitive Doctor (Jo Martin) as Doctor 0? Doctor 0.5? Doctor -1? My head hurts...
