Don't forget that in the brilliant Doctor Who episode Turn Left, Buckingham Palace was destroyed by the futuristic space Titanic, crashing on it the 10th Doctor had already been killed by that point having died underneath the River Thames attempting to save London and the Earth from the Racnoss. The Doctor was killed before he could regenerate. Donna was not there to stop him going to far in her bubble alternate universe timeline because she had never met him. Turn Left is the what might have been, but is one of the standout episodes of Doctor Who for any era.
Its interesting to heard how 3 of these were due to Moffat keeping things in check and people actually listening to him, if only the same had happened when he was showrunner on a couple of his strange changes. And DEAR LORD i wish someone had been able to keep Chibnal in chek and prevent timeless child from happening.
Mmm lets look at state of play at end of each showrunners time: RTD - Rose, stranded in parallel universe till she isnt, then alive with her entire family and her own human version of the Doctor. Rose's dad effectively resurrected from the dead, remarried to Jackie and with a new child. Jackie alive and well, and a mother again. Capt Jack cant die, ever. Mickey, left in a parallel universe till he isnt, alive and well. Martha, alive and well working for UNIT. Donna, cant remember the Doctor but alive, happily married and presumably rich from winning the lottery. Moffat- Amy and Rory, dead in the past. Clara, gets some extra time with Me, but ends up dead on Trap Street. River Song, dead. Bill, turned into a cyberman then a space ghost. Nardole, presumably dead, defending the humans from the inevitable cybermen attack. I never understand the view RTD killed off characters and Moffat didnt, its the exact opposite. Moffat killed just about everyone, RTD no one. In RTD era everyone gets a sickly sweet happy ending, in Moffat era you're doing well to get a bitter-sweet one.
@@Jamestopboy Clara gets a swansong but she is still dead dead by end of it. Same with River, she gets to be a data ghost for a bit but she is still dead, her body fried up in the library. Amy and Rory might get to live out their lives till they die, but they still die. Only Bill gets an actual return to life afterwards, and shes never technically dead in the first place, just converted to a cyberman. So if the question is which showrunner killed of the most main characters its clearly Moffat, none of RTD's die and every single one gets a super happy ending, well except the Doctor.
Not really related, but I had the thought recently that Clara is now basically immortal and she and Me could spend centuries having adventures around the universe before she returned to Trap Street at the moment she left. She obviously did eventually because time wasn't fractured. If nothing else, it would give her a chance to see her family one last time and maybe explain what was happening to her so they didn't spend the rest of their lives wondering what happened to her. Oh, and isn't Liz Shaw technically the prototype to X Files Scully?
