The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

I didn't really remember her much when I was growing up in the 60's and 70's. You'd hear the name here and there. But thanks to UA-cam we get to get introduced and reintrouduced to incredible artists from yesteryear. Now I'd call myself a fan of Cilla Black. Her voice is so unique and powerful.
Back when talent mattered
Wow. Cilla's delivery is so nuanced, subtle. She didn't just sing really well, she knew how to... I can't think of a better word, how to inhabit the song, the stage, the camera, the audience. One of our very best. Thanks for sharing this.
Great comment about Cilla Black. I'm surprised she wasn't in any acting roles. I think of how good singers are good at acting and Cilla Black would have been a terrific actress.
Cilla Black was amazing ! ❤
Very distinct voice. Although the vocal
Color isn’t everyone’s cup of tea. It sets her apart from other singers. I love her sound because it’s so distinct
Her voice was very beautiful
Absolutely stunning. Cilla was fabulous
She was a great singer
she owns it
Absolutely brilliant
From Spain, RIP Cilla, who also died here in Estepona (Málaga). For me, the two best voices have been Nino Bravo (1944-1973) and Cilla Black (1943-2015). I never tire of listening to their records, these two angels with their wonderful voices, well deserve it. A pity that they are in the memory, but they have left a magnificent legacy. Eternal Nino and Cilla. Forever Nino and Cilla.
Class, charm and talent- that’s why years later still a classic- where as todays female singers are forgettable!
Absolutely agree.
I've already forgotten'em. Of course, they don't make songs like this any more. You sing a song like this, you have a good chance . .
Great point, can't disagree.
She was very good 👍
A wonderful performance of a beautiful song by a wonderful talented lady love you always Cilla ❤❤
Great cover
Outstanding voice! Cila Black❤️
A Wonderful Performance By A Fantastic Artist!
Wonderful song
It Is Such A Happy Beautiful Lovely Song
❤️
She should have been huge here in the USA.....I know she made it big on Broadway but such a talent
Beautiful
Great classic, I love it 😀.
The Beatles were also on the show that night it was taped on 8/15/1965 aired on 9/12/1965 on the Monday night after they taped the show Ed introduced them fro their concert at Shea stadium
She was from Liverpool, and knew the Beatles well, they promoted her.
Wow great that you know this recording history! Can share how you know this in detail? Tks
The Beatles Channel talks about all this stuff
This was also the final Ed Sullivan Show episode taped in black and white. The next show would be in color.
Always have loved this song ! I thought it came out in 1967 but guess I was wrong ! I heard it on the radio in 1967 but I cant remember if I heard it in 1965 or not on the radio but they played the song alot in 1967 !
Great.👏👏👏
Adorable
I love florence ballard version
Very nice!
Quality music.
Great performance. Interesting she made up her own lyrics starting at 1:09. I wonder if it was intentional? Here are the original lyrics:
Goin' out of my head over you
Out of my head over you
Out of my head day and night
Night and day and night
Wrong or right
I must think of a way
Into your heart
There's no reason why
My being shy
Should keep us apart
And I think I'm going out of my head
Yes, I think I'm going out of my head
Seems like she stuck to them pretty much!
No. She sang the lyrics written. She skipped a section but that is not a negative: this was the arrangement she sang....it's been going on for hundreds of years in music. My father used to arrange music for a band as a hobby. Arrangement. Get it?
@@iluvhou Well good for you and your dad!! I can't find a version online that includes the lyrics like hers. I'm speaking about the best part of the song. "I must find a way into your heart" is very moving and aptly describes the passion the singer has for the love interest. She sings "As you hold me away into your heart" which makes no sense at all. Also, the part before where she skips "wrong or right" and says "All right" sounds like a blatant misinterpretation of the lyrics. I say this because I used to think that's what Little Anthony was saying until I found a lyrics sheet. When you say she sings what is written, then it was a poor re-write and not the original song as written. I'm guessing she didn't know the lyrics and made up those parts. Which singers often do when they forget the words to a song.
@@DCGuy1997 I agree. When she sang "As you hold me away into your heart" I thought that was a blatant bastardization of the original lyrics. Don't know if that was her idea or the producers. Either way, it didn't work for me. Much prefer the original lyrics as that makes the most sense and appeals to the spirit of the song in a much better way.
@@rayogden4158 I'm guessing she just got nervous during a live performance. That happens a lot and I get it. It's intimidating to sing live. Good performance but the original lyrics are better. :) And now poor Cilla Black is the bunt of the meme "Surprise, surprise" and not known for her earlier body of work.
There’s actually a statue of her right outside a club in Liverpool where she use to work. It’s called The Cavern. Yeah, that one.
Except the original Cavern has been demolish. There is now a new identical Cavern.
Ironically, her real name is Priscilla White.
😮buen dato!! Juro que no lo sabía!
I read some comments knocking Cilla as a 2nd rate singer on other songs recently put on YT....those guys haven’t seen this one yet. Or they would retract their statements
of course we had seen this one... this is a better choice of songs for her very limited voice, but limited is till the operative word..
@@jong0000 Based on her record sales alone, millions of people around the world clearly disagree with you!
She wasn't a great singer. This song is a great example. Was done much better by numerous other singers. As a singer, Cilla was monochromatic. She had a metallic edge to the voice that I think may have made her more suited to the theatrical stage than to Pop.
The young Cilla had an astonishing voice, but when she got older, something went... wrong.
Ok cilla was vever close to my ❤
And all of my life and wa a lady
She was
what has 2 thumbs and is the 1,000th like ?
👉 this guy 👈
Like a lot of her performances, she starts out sounding like not much at all then, she turns a corner and BAM! She has such power and control and such a distinct intensity that you can't ignore her.
She had an interesting start as a singer. She started out as the coat check girl at The Cavern in Liverpool. Her given name was Cilla White. She was working there when the Beatles were discovered by Brian Epstein, their future manager. Epstein heard she could sing and got her a record contract and changed her name to Black. He thought it was more provocative!
Epstein had a whole stable of musical talent that he managed but he only really loved and cared about the Beatles and Cilla Black. Like he did for the Beatles, he lavished his personal attention on her and took care of every little detail of her career for her.
I find this all very interesting.
I remember Cilla!!)))
I in War!!!
ruzzian occupants its Diabol!!!!!
They were so restrained, sadly, singers back in the day 😊 2:13 😊
3 weeks before I was born
She sang totally through her nose.
Yes, she did cabaret on the QE2 where she doubled as a fog horn.
Many great singers have/ had a nasally tone
It helps with vocal projection. A nasal voice can cut through the sounds of other voices and instruments. Some other nasal voices that rose to fame include Dinah Washington, Clara Ward and Diana Ross.
I can just imagine what that hairsprayed hair smelled like: a mixture of lavender and alcohol.
Can todays sonic drivel compare to this timeless classic ?
Nice. I prefer Ella Fitzgerald and Frank Sinatra's version a lot more though.
Little Anthony and the Imperials had the original.
I was thinking she was going out of that wig towards the end when she began moving her head more.
Great but they drowned her out in that middle part but I guess back then mixing boards weren't a thing
She may have been good but nobody beats Lil Anthony singing that song. Nobody should have even tried.
She's got those British teeth.
Small gene pool.
little anthony and the imperials version is a trillion times better. i wish dusty springfield had covered this, instead of cilla.
Petula Clark does a good version but it will always belong to Little Anthony and the Imperials.
Couldn't dent that hair with a sledgehammer.
Well, she is no Petula Clark or Dusty Springfield.
I love the song but sorry, not Cilla's performance here of it
Superb. Not like the LGBT easily offended singers of today
She’s no Little Anthony.
She's not even Lulu...
I love Cillia but this tune, not so much.
not much of a song....made even worse by bad singing.......this song demands a forceful interpretation.....i suggest the 1968 live performance by Sinatra...if you can find it...his show for the election of Humphrey....which happens to be one of his greatest live shows of all time......long available only as a bootleg.though it must be around somewhere by now.....i would encourage everyone to search and listen to it......it is an historic show
Ugh. Enough of her.
How the hell did she having a singing career
Nope.
That wig doesn't seem to fit her properly
Shes forgettable
