These guys sound absolutely HUGE live, saw them at Desertfest among the likes of Electric Wizard and Conan, and they blew both acts away, stunning performance
Quartered live crushed my soul
Hearing you talk about how you feel the weight of the music oppressing is interesting and makes a lot of sense, but personally I really find myself appreciating particularly that, which might be why I enjoy Sludge as a genre so much. Russian Circles are great and one of the best live performances I saw.
I personally love anything that sounds like theme music for the end of the world.... ✍️
My next comments are going to be in Klingon
This sounds less post-metal and more what I'd call sludge metal, which is basically a combination of doom and punk. Though there's definitely overlap with many of the post-metal bands starting out as sludge, I'd also say that post-metal tended to move towards a proggier direction where longer songs, more complex structures, and more (for lack of a better word) "transcendental" aesthetics, while sludge retains a simplicity and grittiness. I'm not familiar with Russian Circles but this was a really good track. Maybe it's just me, but I do really feel like it's missing vocals. I think it's because the simplicity of the riffs and groove really leaves room for vocals to take center stage. Not that the piece sucks without vocals or anything, but I do think it's the one missing piece that could've elevated this from great to truly excellent in my mind. Still, I love the tone of the instruments, the groove is solid as stone, the riffs are dark but catchy, and the whole aesthetic is heavy af.
I often call this the scariest song I know.
In a good way that is :)
The thing that gets me about this is the groovy, aggressive atmosphere.
The fun groovy drums tie the song together, keep me hangbanging constantly. The guitar set the dark wide atmosphere. And the bass add some aggressive accents that add to the groove and intensity.
I would give Arluck, Youngblood or Harper Lewis a try. Quartered is their heaviest imo
More russian circles. Arluck/Harper Lewis
I checked out their 2022 album Gnosis on my own time. It was alright but still not really my cup of tea.
Gonna start spamming this suggestion because a criminally low number of people have reacted to Sybreed. Please check out Sybreed - Line of Least Resistance. They're a one-of-a-kind electronic melodic death metal/industrial metal band from Geneva Switzerland.
so happy that you had a better experience listening to this. More Russian Circles! Youngblood or Memoriam-into-Deficit
Youngblood!! Or Harper Lewis!!
Mad respect for coming back to songs and re-evaluating having got more practice listening to the genre (and especially happy since I love Russian Circles). The oppression is definitely intentional, and makes their live performances pretty hypnotic.
But I fully appreciate why you wouldn’t listen to this casually, I’ve gradually moved away from listening to this kind of music regularly for much the same reasons. These days I just want a bop.
I work out to these guys
Glad you found new appreciation for this great band! Cool thing is that I discovered them through the band Vulkan's Facebook site where they shared going to a Russian Circles concert. And yeah, Vulkan doesnt have to much in common with them musically (except being great creators 😊)
Great bands sharing and appreciating other great bands. I love to see it!
@@CriticalReactions Well, Vulkan was an even smaller band back then but still, yeah 😊
