    Saturday Night Theatre was a long-running radio drama strand on BBC Radio 4. The strand showcased feature-length, middle-brow single plays on Saturday evenings for more than 50 years, having been launched in April 1943. The plays featured in the strand included stage plays, book adaptations and original dramatisations. For most of its history, programmes ran for 90 minutes and were largely entertainment-centred, such as thrillers, comedies and mysteries.
    Saturday Night Theatre was noted as the major drama of the week on BBC Radio 4, until it was scrapped as a programme strand in 1996. Shorter plays continued to be broadcast on Radio 4 on Saturday evenings from 1996 until the relaunch of the channel's schedule in April 1998 by James Boyle, when single dramas were removed from the Saturday evening schedule. Since 1998, the main weekly play on the station has been The Saturday Play, a daytime programme that runs for 60-90 minutes.
    There have since been campaigns to bring back Saturday Night Theatre, but in the context of BBC budget cuts, that have included the 2010 axing of Radio 4's Friday Play (established in 1998, when Saturday Night Theatre was abolished), any return looks unlikely.

    Hello Chesterton
    I just left the theater on Melbourne place
    it was a bit brutal but the play [ leave it to the hangman ]
    the players did such a wonderful job on stage. I do think you should stop by that Playhouse, oh get tickets ahead of time because they do sell out. Make sure you take the time to see that play. You will find it quite enjoyable. Well it's getting a bit late and I have to get to my seat in the center of the theater. Maybe we can have a tea at intermission, cheers chesterton........

Me being a fan of Sherlock Holmes but I did not get this drama at first listen. I got lost in the plot and the characters. There was alot to think about here a bit of a mess at first listen. Confusing for me couldn't figure out this storey line.The case involved a sort of advanced detective work above average plot.a

    Remarkable that the word "queer" is used several times in this play broadcast Feb. 1961 on the respectable middle-class BBC Home Service apparently without any problem. In the same year, the film "Victim" premiered in August carrying an X certificate (adults only) & the scriptwriters had a massive battle with the censorship board over the use of the word "queer".The censors gave in but there was a massive controversy not least because of the word. The censors wanted "deviant" instead. There are no explicit sex scenes in the film so the X certificate was only because of the subject matter....and that word.(see Wikipedia ).

    • @simonmcgrath4112

      U must remember the words gay and queer had totally different meanings in the 60's

    • @VLind-uk6mb
      @VLind-uk6mb 4 роки тому +10

      That's right. They meant "jolly" or "happy" and "odd" or "unusual" respectively. The latter was used with sexual reference by then, though not exclusively and was still understood in context just to mean "odd." The former was not co-opted till later. Titles like "Our Hearts Were Young and Gay" had nothing to do with sex, any more than did the volume of biography of Robert Burns (a celebrated heterosexual) called "The Wonder of All the Gay World."
