I don't own A90J, but I do own A8H Sony and S95B I just got is by far best looking TV I ever owned. For me the most impressive thing is the clarity and punch of screen, just off the charts. Makes HDR content look so good I can't even watch SDR content anymore. I got rid of the Direct TV subscription and only stream now and watch 4K blu-rays because how awesome picture look in HDR. It's almost like you watching demo material all the time, I love it

    • @ericvaughan11

@Paul Bouchard In my opinion the S95B is better if your watching HDR content like 4k blu-ray or Netflix. There is just something about the clarity and colors that in my opinion beats any other OLED I have ever owned including A8H. Plus I didn't install the newest Samsung firmware so my Movie mode still will go up to 1500 nits.

      @lort6022 2 роки тому

@@RockMathis No they did not,or, the updated the firmware again and brightness is back + more accurate in colors but you can still choose to go vivid colors because brightness and color volume is much higher on qd-oled. S95B is the brightest OLED TV you can get regardless of firmware version. Many reviews updated their test, and S95B is still brigther than G2 for example. QD-OLED is simply just brighter, while running cooler. I have seen S95B in person side by side with a G2 and the S95B looked better for sure. Much better colors. Also the S95B was far brighter in HDR gaming. LG has some kind of HGIG issue and delivers a very dim gaming experience.

@@lort6022 Yes, QDOLED is better with colors and brighter...no argument there. I can't wait until they make them in 77 inches. It'll be 2nd gen tech by then as well so im expecting it to be even more colorful and brighter than now. I don't watch a lot of TV in the bedroom so it's gotta be a living room tv and 65 inches doesn't make the cut for me anymore in a living room.

    • @justsaying993
      @justsaying993 2 роки тому +1

@@lort6022 The actual brightness difference between the G2 and S95B is not really that different tho. But when you have more saturated colors, it makes them appear brighter.
HGIG is meant to be played in a dark room. In a brighter room, you’re supposed to use DTM on the LG. And with that on, the brightness difference isn’t drastic, but color saturation is.
Lastly, I also saw the S95B beside the G2, and the G2 maintained inky blacks whereas the S95B blacks looked even more grey than the QN90B that was close to it 😷. Sure, it suppresses reflections well, but it diffuses any light hitting it across the screen, lifting blacks.
So basically, it’s not all better. You get better color saturation to make it look better in a bright room, but you also lose a lot of contrast in a bright room, so it’s a double-edged sword.

I have two Sonys and have always looked down on Samsung tvs. Picked up a S95B a few weeks ago and I honestly like Samsung’s presentation. The best way to describe it is that Sony’s tv presentation makes thinks looks like a very detailed picture while Samsung makes you feel like you are in the picture.

I'm writing from Turkey. I came across your review on Amazon Turkey. Thank you for making an effort to inform us.
Currently, this 55-inch Sony model is priced at $1140 in my country, while the 48-inch LG is $915, making it the most affordable model at an acceptable size of at least 48 inches. Another challenge we face is that Sony has pulled out of our market. Now, we only have LG, Samsung, TCL, Philips, and a few local manufacturers who source panels from LG.
The minimum wage in Turkey is $485, and we have the highest inflation rate in the world. For these reasons, the price-to-performance ratio becomes even more critical for us, and we spend days researching before making a purchase.

It doesnt look that way in reality, BUT what u will see is that the s95b, in general, is easier on the eyes. A lot of people found plasma to have a more “natural feel,” and they say the same thing for qd oled. The reason is, the spectral power distribution on qd oled and plasma has very distinct separation between the reds, greens, and blues. To me, this effect is extremely noticeable and actually reduces eye strain and migraines, for me. Anyways, the reason i mention this is because this is the cause of the “greener/bluer” appearance of the a90j.

Thanks for your great review. I have a question. Your comparison was the A90j using Dolby Vision vs the s95b using hdr10+. I am wondering, however, how the a90j/DV would compare to a s95b just using hdr10 since that would be a more common combination, since there is so relatively little hdr10+ content available. Is it worth getting the a90j for Dolby Vision alone?

    • @Dr.WhetFarts
      @Dr.WhetFarts 2 роки тому +1

Dolby Vision is highly overrated, and I say this as a LG OLED owner. HDR10 is the standard for a reason. S95B will still beat A90J using HDR10 because of the nature of QD-OLED panel; More vivid, bright and punchy colors and this is exactly what you want for good HDR. Way better specular highlights and better colorpop when needed. QD-OLED simply has way better color brightness than WOLED, which is the reason why WOLED panels look dimmed down. HOWEVER WOLED is still better than LCD and in some scenes also comes close to QD-OLED but 9 out of 10 times QD-OLED comes out on top. I saw S95B vs G2 last week in my local store with 10 other geeks, we tested for like 4 hours one evening, in different content and overall S95B simply stood out as the clear winner. Brighter and more vivid + better gaming experience. G2 became dim in HDR gaming, very dim, it has issue with HGIG and HDR gaming in general. Upscaling is also not that good on the G2. S95B also supports 144 Hz without frameskipping for PC usage. G2 is not a bad TV by any means, but it should be at least 25% cheaper than S95B IMO. A95K is obviously great too but it is simply too overpriced right now, S95B is much much cheaper and they look very identical; Sony is more accurate but Samsung is more punchy and vivid - Personal preference, I like vivid and bright over dimmed down and accurate myself. You need to see QD-OLED in person to really see what people talk about. Side by side on youtube does not do it justice. There is a bigger difference IRL between QD-OLED vs WOLED, not night and day but very noticable.

@@Carlos-sn1rk In the past weeks I have seen Samsung messing around with 3 totally different firmwares for the S95B.
The final result at this point in time (fw 1302) is the S95B got nerfed by 500 nits brightness capability (1000nits now i/o 1500) and Filmmaker Mode is buggy again ... FMM was perfect with the previous fw 1211 btw.
You can only call this a scam for achieving overwhelming reviews in the beginning and now after some weeks owners have a quite mediocre tv sitting in their homes ... at least not what they thought they have bought.
To be honest: besides Samsungs scam ... the S95B is a "first year product" using a "first year technology" ... this carries a high risk I would never except for myself hence I also wouldn't recommend it to others ... but that's just MY point of view.
QD-OLED tvs from my point of view maybe finished and known for what they REALLY offer (all pros, cons and failures) in 2023 or 2024 ... no earlier I would buy one.
The C2 on the other side is an over the past 9 years thoroughly improved product carrying no surprises at all ... firmware updates are always making it even better as you can see from recently released new firmwares for BX, CX, GX, B1, C1 and G1 ... and not worse ... as happened with the S95B.
My real recommendation would be the G2, because it has some important advantages over the C2 ... and at my location the price premium is between 0 and around 300€ only ... depending on screen size. It also outperforms the S95B in every aspect except pure colour brightness (but which is not required by regular content anyway...)
      Advantages vs C2 are:
      1. G2 has a heatspreader the C2 doesn't have ... there are several important advantages coming along with a heatspreader in an OLED tv
      2. the G2 uses the latest 2022 "EX" panel vs the C2 uses last years "EVO" panel
      3. the G2 can got up to 38% brighter (also colour brightness) ... which is driven by 1. + 2.
      4. the G2 has a 5 year warranty ... the C2 two years
If you do not want to wall-mount the G2 ... this is no problem as you can get 3rd party stands using the VESA mount of the tv e.g. from Amazon ... and these are about $50 only with a nice black glass base plate. (that's what I did with my 77G2)

To pass on roughly 40% screen size (65" vs 77") never sounds like a good idea ... more like one causing regret afterwards.
In addition as long as you are using an accurate mode (e.g. FMM on the S95B) you will hardly spot a difference between a S95B and a LG C2 or especially a LG G2.
If you are actually prefering the overbrightened and oversaturated picture coming from the S95B ... the best advice will be to wait for next years S95C ... which seems to be released also in a 77" version.

Samsung is a good tv, but all this brightness talk is getting tiresome. Accuracy beat bright vividness when the sony looks liked your looking through a window outside. I can always make the sony more vivid if I want, but harder to make Samsung more accurate with out sending money 💰 for the average person 😮. I understand why manufacturers make tvs bright and vivid for the showroom because it gets eyeballs. But unless you want everything to look like a fantasy game. I respect your opinion on it but disagree. People need to start talking about the chip set use and longevity and build quality and warranty. Sony is outstanding in all.

Sad, although you were aware of only the "Filmmaker Mode" provides an accurate picture on the S95B with fw 1211 ... you still choose the inaccurate mode resulting in you are now comparing "an accurate vs an inaccurate reproduction".
Tbh this alone massively decreases the relevance of your comparison as you gave up on comparability in the first place !
Some viewers who are prefering artificial pop over image depth and high contrast may benefit because they can see what this inaccurate "Samsung's intent" will offer them ... but ... for movie enthusiasts like me who are looking for "creator's intent" and a deep, contrasty and realistic looking picture this "comparison" doesn't offer any value.
Sorry for the criticism, but that's how it is for us video and movie enthusiasts ... and I hope you will redecide for your upcoming comparisons and avoid all overly processed content reproduction and regain relevance of your hard work.

A95K and S95B are more accurate than G2 when all are calibrated. Go read reviews. Rtings mentions this. Newest firmware on S95B made it more accurate but you can still unleash the vivid and punchy colors if you want. Some people want that.

Dolby Vision mastering is done once only in the workflow ... the result of this one time mastering is: a DV version, the HDR10 version and also the SDR version.
That's why studios tend to increasingly rely on DV mastering ... you get the best quality at the lowest cost ... because one workflow generates all three masters of the most important formats at the same time.
Due to this "one time process" the results are identical for all three formats ... with the technical limitations of the respective format ofc

I fully agree ... in addition all those "wowed" by "the picture pops so much" guys apparently are completely ignoring:
Samsungs overbrightening of all picture elements almost eliminates all shadows on faces or objects ... as a result the picture gets flattened out and loses a lot of it's original depth !
Yes, the picture "shouts" at you ... but more like a flat poster and not like a real person !
...TVM also states this in his video ! ... the S95B often ruins contrast compared to the (accurate) A90J ... which is entirely unnecessary and not the technologies fault.
Furthermore the S95B makes up specular highlights where there aren't any ... this is caused by it's internal tone mapping is just overwhelmed with the overbrightened approach.
It is beyond me how anybody can prefer these flat and artificial looking pictures (S95B) over realistic looking pictures which are showing a fantastic depth sometimes even close to like they were filmed in 3D (A90J) !

I primarily use my TV for streaming. Netflix, HBO, Disney+, Prime Video and some next gen gaming. TV is also displayed in the living room so it's not in a dark dungeon thought not super bright either.
I can't decide on an OLED Vs Qled. And the other thing is Samsung TVs don't support DV. And streaming services don't support HDR10+. So Samsung seems like a bad choice? DV vs HDR is a huge difference when the support for HDR10+ adaptive is non existent for my use.

    • @marcuscole8796
      @marcuscole8796 2 роки тому +1

You may face some problems due to the static nature of HDR10 ... like "The Manadalorian" on Disney+ will be too dark with a limited contrast range resulting in a less impressive HDR.
In general: as long as static HDR10 is mastered correctly and you use a tv capable of achieving 900nits peak or more ... there is no big difference between HDR10 and Dolby Vision ... unfortunately there is still a number of suboptimal produced content out there (and most probably will never disappear entirely).
DV is always as accurate as it can get and always using the full potential of your tv especially if it can only achieve e.g. 550 nits (other than HDR10).
If you focus on getting a tv capable of achieving 1000nits peak (or close to) you will in most cases be fine with HDR10 only ... because the usual 1000nit mastered content doesn't leave enough "playground" for DV for showing it's potential.
If you are looking for a very powerful and a "as hazzlefree as possible" tv with any feature installed you may possibly need ... check out the LG G2. It's for several reasons the much better choice compared to the S95B and also outperforms any LCD tv out there (except for extremely bright room usage ofc).

Samsung already has removed the polariser from the S95B ... to achieve higher brightnesses than the max. 600 nits they had with QD-OLED in 2021.
I personally hope Sony, LG, Panasonic will never remove the polariser ... the polariser has an important function (other than reducing light output ofc^^).
We can be glad for not having the negative effects of a missing polariser with the other brands ... which are: a permanent reddish tint even in a dark room and elevated with ambient light ... and visibly elevated blacks and a washed-out picture with only some ambient light in place.

HDR10+ is a "fake dynamic" format because it is algorithm-based and guesses dynamic meta data on top of pre-mastered HDR10 content.
DV on the other hand can only be manually mastered by colorists ... hence there is no guessing at all. Needless to point out which one is better ... or even real.
But whether HDR10+ is fake or not is anyway not relevant as it is a DOA format with close to zero support and content...

@@Takeme_DCUO Well of course ... what you like or not is entirely your own decision :-) ... and discussing about it is completely useless ... as with any other subjective matter :-)
This is totally fine as at the end of the day we gotta have fun ... whether you get there with 100% accuracy or with psychedelic distorted pictures doesn't matter at all ;-)
Good or better is relative and lies in the eye of the beholder ... I learned (for my needs) the closer I get to accuracy and reality the more fun it's for me ... but that's just me :-)
Another issue I have is with principles ... I know how intensive Samsung is cheating again and again as far as I can tell from observing them throughout the past 5 years (much more and aggressive than any other of their competitors) ... and ... I actually hate cheaters ... that's how it is ... how I am.
HDR10+ is an invention from Samsung to only undermine accuracy and Dolby Vision ... HDR10+ cheats ... Samsung permanently cheats and tries to scam ... so whatever they do it always leaves a bad taste ... and even when it's great at first glance ... I every second expect the ugly other side of it to pop up.
I have zero trust in them and as a consequence zero respect...

@@Takeme_DCUO lol ... interesting you are mentioning Sony, because this my personal second black sheep :-)
The vrr story you are mentioning already was embarrassing ... but they are on my radar for much longer:
in 2017 they made their first OLED (A1E) ... and they were that anxious the tv turned out being very dim and their ABL was extremely annoying ... so far it's quite ok ... to stay on the safe side with your first year product ... but with this tv also their Dolby Vision desaster started:
LG introduced DV in 2016, Sony wanted to catch up and announced (only announced!) DV for their tvs at CES 2017 ... after that they forced Dolby Labs. to introduce this horrible "Low Latency" version of Dolby Vision, because their tv were not powerful enough for decoding DV.
And - as you wrote for vrr - even for this inferior LLDV it took them more than a year to get a firmware update released which installed their so-called DV on their tvs.
To cut a long story short:
      1. Sony's handling of Dolby Vision throughout the past 5 years is a desaster ... it took them 4 years (until 2021) to get it right
      2. their "promising features and delivering one year later" started in 2017 with DV ... and it carried on with other features (e.g. vrr) ... for me Sony now is
      3. well-known for selling unfinished products ... together with the promise to complete the tv/console later on (or never^^) ...
      4. even their 4K-players still have no HDR/DV detection in 2022 ... you have to manually switch DV on and off with almost every movie you are watching ... that's a bad joke in 2022
For me the difference roughly is: both are scammers ... Samsung "could do it right" but has decided to be and to stay on the dark side ... Sony for me is just incapable and slowly turning into a shadow of their former shine. (for tvs only ... cameras and projectors Sony is still top notch)
The A90J created hope and the A95K might as well (not sure yet) ... so, we'll see.
Don't get me wrong I am a (was a huge) fan of Sony ... my very first tv in 1986 was a large and fantastic Trinitron CRT ... and I still use a 42" Sony rear-projection tv in the other room ... but since 5 years their OLED tvs carry too much flaws to convince me of buying one.
When it comes to a purchase decision it's either a Panasonic or a LG OLED for me.
