      I agree, you notice more of the nuisances which are so revealing of their feelings for each other. Each time she rebuffed him, bumping his arm, lightly touching his coat or sleeve or glancing at him, she was telling him her true feelings.

    I think it's adorable the way Werner is nervously playing with his cap behind his back before he attempts to talk to Jeanne and her grandfather again. He's trying so hard, poor boy. He just steals my heart.

    at 8:04 in this clip, note that Jeanne is reading a book entitled "L'amour Humaine" or something like that, sorry the screen is not very clear. I think it means "the love of humans"? what irony..

    Why does Werner turn his hat around and around with his fingers in his hand? Is he nervous to see her?

  • @silentsea2956
    @silentsea2956 4 роки тому +24

    At 2:54 it can clearly be seen that Werner was flirting a little bit with Jeanne when he put his hand through his hair while smiling at her. He noticed she looked at him,even though Jeanne never wanted to make eye contact with Werner and he smiled at her. It's funny how Jeanne tries to look like she doesn't care about him but it can be noticed she's just trying really hard not to fall in love with him. Werner makes Jeanne nervous, and he knows it.

      Throughout their interactions Jeanne gives away her true feelings. Bumping him as she leaves the kitchen, brushing his coat and sleeve, stealing glances then quickly looking away all tell him she is hiding, which leads to his “silence of the sea” moment.

    At the end of the movie instead of just saying farewell she should have told him what she did Christmas night in his bedroom......everything! And she should have apologized for reading his letter. And she should have told him that she fell asleep in his bed and awoke when she heard his vehicle arrive. And that she went back to her room immediately and shut her door. And then she should have given him a long hug and a kiss on his cheek and said farewell. That would have made much more sense and would allow him to know how she felt about him. It would have let him know that she loved him.

      Perhaps Werner knew something about her stolen bicycle? It gave him the opportunity to offer her a ride in his car. Jeanne chained and padlocked her bike in a very public area. The thief would have had to use bolt cutters to break the chain. Who but a German soldier would have access to bolt cutters and break the chain in broad daylight in public and no one would dare question what he was doing? Werner’s orderly, Franz?

    • @silentsea2956
      @silentsea2956 4 роки тому +7

      So are you saying Werner ordered Franz to steal Jeanne's bicycle so Werner could offer her a ride home? Or that Franz stole the bicycle without Werner knowing about it? For what motive?

    • @sharyncarr4279
      @sharyncarr4279 4 роки тому +4

      Amy M Werner knew she depended on her bicycle. He needed to get her alone if he hoped to begin a conversation with her. It may have been Franz’s suggestion. To whom would you go to report a crime committed by a German soldier, perhaps his commanding officer? Maybe that’s why Werner was a bit nervous when he was spinning his hat as he went to the library. I’m guessing he already knew what had happened. 😉

      @ Amy M The relationship between an officer and an orderly was generally pretty close if they had been together for some time. Franz would have heard things he was never at liberty to divulge. He may have suspected that Werner had feelings for Jeanne and was trying to be helpful. We will never know but it is fun to speculate!

    That s one of those very rare movies nowadays which goes on about a woman -man interaction without involving bloody sex (the act in itself). It is so rare now. And this is a masterpiece of subtlety! the male character is someone highly aware of the war context with an upbringing based on honour and duty - something that nowadays is very difficult to find in men simply because they are not educated as such. However, although now a character like that of capt. Werner might look like a fairy tale one, such people did exist .... and oddly (enough- oddly for our times of course) they were the result of a society and of an education which now is rejected and thrashed and labelled as being tough or political incorrect or racist or ..... or whatever other iideological crap they have invented now.

    • @terrygalvin9653
      @terrygalvin9653 4 роки тому +4

      Honor and duty are immutable and respected, today as much as before. They are becoming rare qualities, but it’s not because of political correctness. Political correctness is something honorable people recognize as ways to be kind and polite, which also are honorable qualities, despite the scorn heaped on them by the ignorant.

    The captain saw her sexy legs, accidentally, as she was adjusting her thigh high. He felt flushed and started circling his cap. Who could blame him? Pascal and his buddy noticed her hot legs too as they gave her a ride back home. The captain could do a monologue about how German and French men appreciate women’ sexy legs as a common “humanity” trait. Ha ha!
