Hi, this is Mr. Franco. I just bought a master grill for my daughter and I’m excited to see how it works. Everything that you have shown on your review it has helped me tremendous so I thank you very much and appreciate it.
I hardly ever post comments on any videos, but this one is *super* comprehensive, and was very much appreciated... Take it for its pros or cons, I don't think anybody can fault the informative factor... Thank you, sir!
Mine was delivered last week. Assembled and seasoned it on Saturday, and did our first cook yesterday. 1 cook in, and I love this thing! It quickly gets up to temp, and it stays within 1-2 degrees of target!
Excellent review Tom. I've been wanting one of these since they came out but I had to wait until all the bugs were sorted out. When i heard about the last round of improvements I knew it was time. Picked it up today then followed your video for assembly, which was super helpful. Need to watch a few mod videos on things folks are doing to improve usability. Burn in is next then I'll be ready to smoke. Thanks for the guidance!
How is the taste? I have a Traeger but hate grilling on it. I do not like a smoked taste to my meat when I am grilling. Does this have a smoke taste when grilling?

I’m a proud owner of the 560. Tom, I appreciate all your videos & find them very helpful & informative buddy! I also share your passion of outdoor cooking. Keep up the good work my friend.
Thanks for Watching! You can’t start it via WiFi, for safety reasons you shouldn’t. Yes you can see the temps while it is running via WiFi on you mobile device
@@TomHorsmanAmateurBBQ Right I totally understand that and you can’t start it without a flame! However when it is up and going and you run away from your home can you stop at what’s going on with the grill on the mobile app? Only reason I ask is chargriller claims their auto Kamado is WiFi but as well as you go out of your WiFi range or blue tooth range the app stops working. So it’s not a true WiFi system and I was wondering if this is the same or a true WiFi connection!
Ok.. that’s a good question, I’m not sure of the answer, I’ve used the WiFi on the MB and the CG but typically don’t leave or go very far if I do while I’m cooking
I've a pellet grill and have been wanting one of these since they're come out. Could you answer me a question. Does it get hotter on one side than the other? If you smoker to pork butts side by side would the one nearest the hopper cook faster?
Thanks for watching Jay! Good question! I have noticed that like most grills there are some spots that are warmer than others, on the gravity style grills it’s seems to be hotter opposite of the fire box, I think because of the fan and baffles
Thanks for Watching! If you are referring to direct flame, there is none however it gets 650-700 degrees hot very quickly and with the cast iron grates, it grills very well
Pretty good updates, glad they’re paying attention and refining the design. Looking forward to seeing the shootout and how well it performs! Awesome job Tom!
Thanks for Watching JR! Good question, however too meany variables, temp set, type of charcoal, temp outside. I will tell you that a full hopper will easily do 8-10 hrs low and slow
That’s what I’m trying to decide too. Love the “bread box” style of the master built and the rotisserie option for it. However I’m concerned about the baffle in the masterbuilt rusting out. As well as the hot stops. Also concerned about clear up in the masterbuilt due to the cast iron grates on the bottom and the way the drip tray is designed. The char griller seems more innovative with that but I don’t really care for the barrel style, seems like a lot less usable space to smoke/grill in. But maybe that’s just me. Leaning heavily towards the char griller.
Tom did mods to the other masterbuilt with stainless steel where heat and rust would be a problem. I wonder if the char 980 would need those mods as well.
Hi Tom. Love your videos! You wouldn’t be able to tell me the width without the side shelf would you? Wondering if it will it in my SUV with the side shelf removed.
Thanks so much sir. Keep up the good work. Have the 1050 seasoned now. Cooking spare ribs tomorrow. On sale at Kroger this weekend. $1.99 lb in Troy, IH
Both Masterbuilt and Chargriller have gravity series grills is there any other companies that you know of that have plans to join the gravity charcoal market?
I just cooked a brisket on my MB Gravity 800 for the 1st time and was impressed.. I used some of the Prime 6 charcoal that is highly compressed and it burned for over 12 hours....
Wow!!! What a great review. You seriously save people like me a lot of time and money by doing your thing. I really appreciate you time and effort. Can’t wait to buybone
Your videos are excellent and authoritative. Unlike some magazines (woodworking) and UA-cam channels which just promote items for monetary gain you cover the key points without the taint of promotion. Only someone with a passion can do this. Thanks
Great video, very informative. One thing that I can't wrap my head around is the hopper. What prevents the fire from traveling up and lighting the entire hopper? It seems like a larger version of a chimney starter.
@@TomHorsmanAmateurBBQ So the gasketed hopper lid prevents the lit coals from getting oxygen from above I guess. The only oxygen is coming from the fan and the cook chamber so that is where the fire goes. Interesting design.
I heard you say that the rotisserie needs to be removed & the hole recapped when cooking above 450. Too bad they didn’t put a swinging cover over the hole like they did for the probe hole.
Tom, enjoyed your review of the Masterbuilt grills as well as comparing the CG 980. I've decided to go with MB. I just don't like the look of the barrel, much prefer the "bread box". My question is: will the 560 model handle a large whole turkey for thanksgiving? Thanks
This was a great video Tom. Loving the detailed content. Considering this comes with auto temp control. For new beginners, trying to get into smoking and versatile grill. Would you say this Masterbuilt or Pellet grill (Pitboss Pro 850 w/flamer) is a better fit for beginners? Considering you have had multiple cooks on both styles. Any insight you could give? I think i have nailed down to 2 of these final contenders for my next one 😊
Thanks for watching! They both perform well for smoking although the smoke profile is different between charcoal and pellets with charcoal being more pronounced whereas pellets is mild to medium. The big difference comes in ability to sear. The MB gets the entire grill surface hot whereas the pellet truly only gets hot over the burn pot. Enjoy!
Thanks for Watching Fred! The fire burns in the firebox which at the burn level has 1/8” thick metal with a fire proof type material behind it which is about 1” thick

I have watched a couple of your videos this morning. Both great. Lots of info and thanks for posting. The 1050 is probably a bit bigger than I need but the 560 is a bit smaller. Being in Canada I have not been able to find the 800. I really like the idea of a gravity fed charcoal grill. Think this is the route I am going to go. My 8 year old Trager packed it in over the weekend so I am looking for something to replace it. I still might get another pellet for variety but the 1050 just looks like a beast. Thanks!
I have had the 800 for and few weeks now. After using a WSM for the last 5 years this thing is thing is the cats ass! My only gripe is the bottom door sensor trips sometimes after the door heats up. It flexes slightly decreasing the pressure on the sensor. I had to tighten the clamps. Which worked but makes the door flex even more.

Hello folks. I would appreciate some advice. At the moment I'm not prepared to purchase a new one. Someone in my community is selling one online for $560. It includes a stainless steel upgrade kit which he said he purchased for close to $200. It's 2 and a half years old and used less than 9 times. I didn't see any rust buildup in the photos. What do you think folks? Is it.too.much if a risk considering there probably isn't any warranty remaining considering an electrical component may go out sooner or later? Should I hold off and wait or would this be a steal if I purchase it?
That would be really really curious to find out how you shoot your videos in first person view like what you're set up is? I really like the way you have all your videos
I’m really glad to hear you will be doing a comparison of the 980 and the 1050. The only ones one UA-cam so far are of the 560. I’m not saying the 560 is a bad grill but I don’t think it a fair comparison.

Thx for the review! Does the Char-griller 980 snuff out the charcoal too? I tried shutting everything down, but in the morning it smoldered through everything
Did you ever perfect your grill pro manifold shield? I ask only because the mods that are available seem a little expensive to me. Great videos by the way.
Oh man, was planning on dropping some coin on a Recteq to replace my treager. These grills look great, I heard about these from a guy I was working with. How does cost of fueling these compare to pellet style?
Great review as usual. For that money, this is for serious grillers with big families and crowds.. You are going to have to expand that garage if things keep going like they are. You have a very understanding Mrs. Horsman.
Great review Tom! I’m wondering what color you’re going to paint the 1050? I’ll bet red! That is definitely a beast. Looking forward to the next videos. Cheers!
Watch this review today June 20th 2022 I'm extremely interested in buying this grill and I'm extremely interested in what kind of paint you use to paint it because once I buy this grill I'd like to customize it to fit me because my family and I grill constantly even in the middle of winter best way to make a steak is over charcoal

Tom, great videos. Love your palace of grills! With the masterbuilt heating element directly below the food, what’s your thoughts on fat side up versus fat side down with a brisket on that grill?
Hey Tom...great video. I am buying a 1050 in a week or so. Is there a version or model somewhere in the unit so I can ensure it is the 2021 version? I'm up in Canada and we can't actually go into stores right now so I'm just going to pick it up without be able to see it first. I would like to verify that it is a newer version with the store before buying. Thanks!
Thanks for Watching Keith! It’s all about how strong of a smoke profile you like. Pellet grills have a light to medium smoke flavor, whereas charcoal gives a much stronger smoke flavor
@@TomHorsmanAmateurBBQ I agree! 100%. Ive always used stick burners, but have used a Pitboss pellet smoker the last 2 years. The masterbuilt is pulling me back. Would you say they are similar in “set it and forget it” convenience. I miss charcoal. Is the gravity series just as seem less with pid action. I love your channel bro!
You are correct Gravity type charcoal grills do indeed operate much like a pellet grill with less moving parts but aren’t as efficient when it comes to fuel consumption
One thing about TOM is he actually reads instruction manuals and studies the Grills. Coincidentally, he doesn't have the same problems with his grills that other do. So what does TOM do that he doesn't burn out his MB 1040 Chimney and melt his flap on the Char griller 980?
Great review! I enjoy the gravity series for the charcoal flavor, ease of use, and cooking space. But I really dislike the gable design of the manifold. I cook alot of fattier meats, and the fat drips down onto the manifold and eventually into the heat windows. Despite regular cleaning, I get flareups that I notice when my app says 500 degrees near the end of the cook lol. I really wish they went with a sloped design to channel away the drippings or had the manifold top extend a bit further so that it can't drip into the heat windows.
Great review. Do you have to use all the charcoal each cook? If you just turn if off and put the baffles back in, will the fire go out and preserve whatever briquets are left?
I do t have any contacts at MB, obviously they aren’t overly thrilled with me.. I would suggest emailing there customer service, maybe they can answer that

What do you think folks? Is it.too.much if a risk considering there probably isn't any warranty remaining considering an electrical component may go out sooner or later? Should I hold off and wait or would this be a steal if I purchase it?
@lawrenceh.1526 Thanks for Watching! Confirm that it works first, sounds like a good deal
@@TomHorsmanAmateurBBQ Thank you sir.
That would be really really curious to find out how you shoot your videos in first person view like what you're set up is? I really like the way you have all your videos
Thanks for Watching! Lol,,, I just an I pad with tripod, that is it
@@TomHorsmanAmateurBBQ they are great Tom. You found a great formula.
The finger is your trademark!!👆
Thanks Eric! I appreciate you watching and supporting!
I’m really glad to hear you will be doing a comparison of the 980 and the 1050. The only ones one UA-cam so far are of the 560. I’m not saying the 560 is a bad grill but I don’t think it a fair comparison.
Thanks for Watching Bradley! I appreciate the feedback!
Hi Tom. Do you know if they put the smaller smoke vent on the newer 560’s? Really enjoy your channel. Very informative 👍
Thanks for Watching! The 560 has remained the same
Great review. Just ordered mine and i cant wait to get it. Didnt realize they updated their grill but its nice to see that they're listening. Does anyone know what the temp guage replacement was? Tnks
Thanks for watching! Here’s the temp gauge....www.amazon.com/GALAFIRE-Thermometer-Charcoal-Temperature-Replacement/dp/B07VG6M228/ref=gp_aw_ybh_a_1?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=88EKZP2BBX5007THDJDF
@@TomHorsmanAmateurBBQ thank you. Good work on those videos. Learned alot.
Thanks for watching! I appreciate the feedback!
Thx for the review! Does the Char-griller 980 snuff out the charcoal too? I tried shutting everything down, but in the morning it smoldered through everything
Thanks for Watching Brian, yes it does!
Results of the cook-off.?? Chargrill or master built.?? Who won.
Thanks for Watching Ray! ua-cam.com/video/IABy66bSp_E/v-deo.html
Thanks Tom! What’s the lowest setting this grill will run at?
They will run at 150 degrees, works perfectly for smoking salmon.
Thanks for watching, 150 ish
How Low can you Smoke? Will it Cold Smoke?? Like 150?
Thanks for Watching Terry! 160 is the low temp
LOOKING FORWARD TO THE SHOOTOUT
Thanks for Watching! Me too!
Curious to know if you've done a comparison of this to the Oklahoma Joe version.
Thanks for Watching! Wasn't aware that Oklahoma Joe"s had a Gravity Charcoal Grill
Awesome Review..... which Thermometer do you recommend without having to make modifications. Thanks.
Thanks for Watching! Galafire model GT80-7RB from Amazon
thank you so much!!!
Are you able to add to the hopper once its been cooking?
Thanks for watching Ethan! You can, but you need to be careful and follow the manufacturer recommendations for that process
Did you ever perfect your grill pro manifold shield? I ask only because the mods that are available seem a little expensive to me. Great videos by the way.
Thanks for watching Scott! Sorry, it’s just not big enough
Uh oh, Tom. The 560 is going to get jealous! 😅 Great review and looks like some cool videos up coming! 👍
Thanks for watching! Cool indeed!
Oh man, was planning on dropping some coin on a Recteq to replace my treager. These grills look great, I heard about these from a guy I was working with. How does cost of fueling these compare to pellet style?
Thanks for watching Jeffrey! These aren’t as efficient as a pellet grill
Thanks Tom! Might have to get the rotisserie for my 1050. Nice video 👍🏻
Thanks for Watching Mike!
How does it compare to the new Char-Griller gravity fed 980?
Thanks for Watching Tim! There will be a comparison video!
@@TomHorsmanAmateurBBQ Thanks! I know Masterbuilt had several complaints. Just curious how the new and improved compares to Char-Griller.
Thanks Tim! You will find out
Great review as usual. For that money, this is for serious grillers with big families and crowds.. You are going to have to expand that garage if things keep going like they are. You have a very understanding Mrs. Horsman.
Thanks for Watching Fred! Yes I do!
Can you buy a griddle for this
Thanks for Watching! Yes
Great review Tom! I’m wondering what color you’re going to paint the 1050? I’ll bet red! That is definitely a beast. Looking forward to the next videos. Cheers!
Thanks for Watching Jay! I haven’t decided yet….
Thanks for Watching Kevin! Rust oleum high temp paint works well as does high temp engine paint….ua-cam.com/video/K8h1lwEOpXo/v-deo.html more mods….ua-cam.com/video/OCJ7G7mD528/v-deo.html
Hey Tom. Love the overview of this. Looking forward to the showdown between this and the char griller. Any idea when you will get that posted?
Thanks for watching David! Shooting for next weekend!
Tom, great videos. Love your palace of grills!
With the masterbuilt heating element directly below the food, what’s your thoughts on fat side up versus fat side down with a brisket on that grill?
Thanks for watching! Fat side down
Hey Tom...great video. Thanks!
Thanks for Watching Chad! I really don’t know that answer
We are 15 months into this pandemic and you can't go into stores yet .......I would be thinking about a change of scenery
The storage tip out in the back is for the cord...
Thanks for Watching! Appreciate the feedback!
Tom do you still buy the grills or are they gifted to you...i have 11 myself..and use them all
Thanks for watching Billy! Majority of the grills I buy! A few are gifted
Great video! You may have just saved me $2k! I have been thinking about buying a stick burner offset smoker but this looks a lot more practical.
Thanks for Watching Joshua! Enjoy!
You're a beast Tom. Looking forward to seeing this in action
Thanks Mike! Just keeping busy!
Tom, I see where Middleby now owns Kamado Joe, Master built, and Char-Griller. 3 good brands.
Thanks for Watching Tom! Yup that happened about 9 months ago
Did you buy this or did they send it to you?
Thanks for watching! They sent it
Hey Tom, would you prefer a gravity series over say a pellet smoker? Important question cause I trust you
Thanks for Watching Keith!
@@TomHorsmanAmateurBBQ understand. Ty
One thing about TOM is he actually reads instruction manuals and studies the Grills. Coincidentally, he doesn't have the same problems with his grills that other do. So what does TOM do that he doesn't burn out his MB 1040 Chimney and melt his flap on the Char griller 980?
Thanks for watching Gerald! I appreciate the kind words and the feedback
Tel tru makes the best temp gages. They are not cheap but USA made and can be calibrated
Thanks again for watching Tom! I agree but I can’t afford that many of them
Storing the extra grates is something I have a challenge with all the time. You need a video just for that!
Thanks for Watching Chris! I need to do it a couple more times….
Hey Tom I bought 4 of the magnetic hooks from Walmart and store mine on the back of the unit when not in use.
Thanks for Watching William! Good tip!
Do you has wood chunks doe smoking? Trying to understand how this is a true smoker
Thanks for Watching! It does use Wood Chunks along with charcoal, I’ve also used just wood
Can’t wait for the Gravity Fed Smackdown!!!
Thanks for Watching Jeff! Me too!
Thanks for Watching! Appreciate the feedback
Get grillgrates!! They saved my life…run at high heat with no flare ups
Thanks for Watching !
@@onemangang3831where did you get the grill grates for this grill from?
www.grillgrates.com
Great review. Do you have to use all the charcoal each cook? If you just turn if off and put the baffles back in, will the fire go out and preserve whatever briquets are left?
Thanks for Watching Brad! Yes, you are correct
DoeS the now built 560s have the same upgrades as the 2021 1050 does
Thanks for Watching! Good question,,, I m assuming that it does, but I don’t know
@@TomHorsmanAmateurBBQ any way you can find out easier than I may be able too
I do t have any contacts at MB, obviously they aren’t overly thrilled with me.. I would suggest emailing there customer service, maybe they can answer that
