The moment Paul steps out of the thopter into the sand and kneels down to sift his hand through the spice was my single favourite moment out of the whole movie. I truly felt like I was in Paul's shoes for a second, just experiencing this alien world for the first time. And Hans Zimmer's score in the backgound **chef's kiss**

I loved it. I was in awe of the shot where the sandworm causes that first massive wave of sand to fly through the air, and makes the sand ripple like water. It's one of the most amazing depictions of fluid dynamics I've ever seen on film. Aside from the audio and visual spectacle, Oscar Isaac and Sharon Duncan-Brewster's performances in that scene were amazing. Sharon's facial expressions were especially great at establishing Dr. Kynes' internal conflict, discovering in that moment that Leto is actually a good man and that she likes him, but knowing that he's being set up for failure at the emperor's command and she's powerless to stop it. The film isn't a perfect adaptation of the book, but that scene is pretty much as close to perfection as I could have asked for.

And I was disapointed by the lack of suspension of a traitor. The housekeeper warned Jessica in Lynch's Dune and she did start lookimg at everyone in the immediate household. My favorite scene by far is the stilltent. Paul's vision is so viscerally unsettling, and being able to experience his vision during his breakdown accompanied by the malevolent musical score made the scene so much more powerful, which is crucial as it's quite possibly the most important moment of foreshadowing in the film. I loved how that single shot of Paul and Chani gazing down over the sea of warriors made Paul look so cold and unemotional in contrast to the boy writhing from panic in the present. I love that I've seen this movie numerous times both in the theater and on TV, and the moment he screams "GET OFF ME" using the voice makes me jump every time regardless of the format. It's just...it's so good.

The harvester rescue sequence (in addition to the sequence prior where the helicopters set out to observe the harvester and Dr. Kynes gives them exposition) is without a doubt the best 10 minute of the film for me. I watched the film three times in the theater mainly for that 10 minute. The scale of the desert vs the helicopters, Kynes's exposition, the moment where they see the worm, the anticipation, the tension, the reveal of the worm for the first time for the audience and for Paul, the disorientation due to spice, the devouring of the harvester, Kynes's prayer... Just flawless cinema. I'm 35 yo and seen all the science fiction out there, and I don't remember being so awe-inspired for a long, LONG time. I watched all of Villeneuve's films except for Polytechnique, and I can comfortably say that this whole harvester rescue sequence is by far my favorite Villeneuve moment. The whole film but specifically this sequence reminded me why we are all in love with the art of cinema in the first place.

My favorite scene is one of the quieter ones. The first meeting with Stilgar is a masterpiece of subtlety. There's so much information packed into that short encounter. Every word and gesture defines the attitude and personality of each character. And the whole story is practically summarized in that brief conversation. To top it off is Javier Bardem's brilliant performance as Stilgar. As he stands before Leto, watch his eyes cut over to Paul. He's addressing the Duke, but his mind is on Paul the whole time.

This is my favorite scene in the film. It's just incredible, and it seems to get better with every viewing. As a musician and arranger I especially appreciate the sound and music in this film. One thing I think really sells the scene is when Gurney and Paul stay on the landing ramp while the 'thopter rises and circles the worm. They could get in, but they're transfixed. I also love how it looks like the scene is over when they get back, but then we get right back into it with his vision about the knife. Fantastic.
In the book and in '84, we hear Kynes think, "I like this duke." This isn't directly conveyed in this film, but it seems in this version she had that thought anyway, as evidenced by her willingness to ignore an Imperial order and report the events to the Lansraad.

I hate nitpicking and nitpickers, but two things didn't work for me on this scene. Stupid little things, but annoying if you want to consider this scene "perfect". First of all, the moon over Arrakis is supposed to be "wreaking havoc" on their comms, and yet all the comunications within the thopter, the harvester, the carry-all, and the spotters are cristal clear. No distortion, no noise, no static. Makes no sense. And second one, when the workers get on the thopters, they are all natives from Arrakis (kind of "middle eastern" looking, blue eyes...) and yet when they talk on the comms the voices have all perfect british accent... They should have had a strong accent like Jamis, the guy watering the palm trees or Stilgar. Again, small details, but felt strange in an otherwise so well thought and executed movie, considering Villeneuve is a perfectionist in other details (one example: when Paul is talking with Duncan about his vision of him dying, there are 19 dead Sardaukar lying on the ground, like in the book, etc).

My biggest critic of the movie (apart from some critical details that would have required a bit more explaining), is paradoxically the absolute perfection in every scene. It is a very dense, clockwork, almost claustrophobic movie. Not a single word is chitchat, not a single item is useless. Everything is a symbol or a plot device.
Villeneuve has completely evacuated the mundane, and has embraced what we can call "imperial movie making". I would have liked to see a little more of everyday life. Does anyone has a hobby? What do they eat? What are ordinary people doing on Caladan? Is there a grand bazaar in the settlement on Arrakis? Why do streets, towns, entire planets feel empty?

They already split the book into two parts and it's still a long movie. Anything superfluous to the story would have probably ruined the pacing. I do agree it would have been nice to allow some time to let the scenes breath and soak everything in, but that would only really work in a miniseries.
The set design, props and costumes already do an excellent job of establishing all the different cultures. I think there's enough world-building there for the audience to be able to fill in the rest of it with their imagination. And if a film leaves you wanting more, it's clearly done something right.

    two problems with the scene:
    - when they’re surveying the site, Leto says “is that a _worm?”_ rather than “is _that_ a worm?” as they were already talking about worms, the emphasis shouldn’t have been on “worm.”
    - when they land, Leto then says “put seven men each in my ships, now.” while not explicitly incorrect, it is an odd phrasing… why not say “put seven men in each of my ships, now”?

Blatantly incorrect. Emphasis on "Worm" conveys disbelief, shock at the idea of a worm showing up at that moment and the realization of what they're up against, in contrast with the tiny creatures we call worms in everyday life. Emphasis on "That" would betray a near certainty, questioning the obvious, and would make the question borderline rhetorical. You can be a certrain director would make the above decision in a heatbeat.

@@Fyre0 - if anything, the phrasing and emphasis in the movie expresses concern, rather than shock. in the conversation they were having, “that” (being the wormsign) was the novel concept, and not “worm.” something like _”THAT_ is a worm?” would also make more sense, expressing shock, but maybe sounding a little dumb.
the conversation in the thopter about worms and spice harvesting just seemed too brief. it may seem like petty nitpicks, but I just happen to notice strange dialogue in movies often. everything else about the movie was so meticulously curated, so little things like this stick out even more.

Why are you acting like an English teacher to a COMPLETED movie, which you're not involved with in any way?

I think it's also pretty forced tho , because essentially all this happens because Paul didn't wear his mask .

Gurney wasn't wearing a mask and the spice didn't affect him. It happened to Paul only because he's a product of the Bene Gesserit breeding program which enables him to see visions and the spice opened up those visions in him. I don't think you understood the movie
