I love Denis. he is not only a master but a genuinely good, warm guy. He is proof that a director doesn’t need to be an asshole to make brilliant work
Several directors fit that bill. Denis is definitely one of the best directors out there.
How do you know he's not an asshole? Have you watched him direct a movie? It's easy to be nice during an interview lol
@@maxmonas7131 no complaints from cast or anyone else he has worked with. Calm demeanor. The only think that could count as offensive that he has said is that marvel movies are boring (not exact words but something along that line).
@@Sci-Fi_Freak_YT when have you ever heard actors complain about directors? they never complain about big directors because it can cost them jobs in the future. I'm not saying Denis is an asshole. He might actually be a nice guy. I just find it funny that people think they know a guy's personality based on how he acts in interviews.
@@maxmonas7131 you do have a point but you are wrong about actors though. They will always complain about the director or anyone else on set of something is off.
The way they did 'The Voice' is absolutely mindblowing. Small speakers simply cannot do it justice. It made me jump when I saw it in the theatre.
Also the sound of the ornithopters
ikr - damn, though, I wish I hadn't seen it here. I'll be avoiding all pre-release hype apart from this interview.

The first movie I saw in cinema since the pandemic started. A great start I must say
Especially so in IMAX!!
Watch in IMAX if possible. Stick to 2D
Also my first movie since Covid. Absolutely amazed.
Villeneuve is a cinematic master. I could listen to Stephen and him chatting for an hour.
The film should be released with JUST STEPHEN & DENIS talking about the 🎞 film by the hour

You mean apart from BR 2049.... right? I REALLY wanted Riddle to do it!
True
Cannot wait to see Dune.....
His Blade Runner sequel was brilliant....every bit as good as the original, imo. Totally felt like the same universe...but heightened with subtle tasteful modern sensibilities. Precisely what I wanted. I get the feeling his new take on Dune will be the same.

Villeneuve can do no wrong. I'm seeing Dune for the second time in a theater tomorrow and can only encourage everyone to watch it on the biggest theater screen you can find.
The biggest screen and the biggest subwoofers.
I agree! I've seen it twice already in the theater, and would like to see it a third time. The second time I noticed and understood so many more things... who knows how the third time will go :) but absoluteltely always on the big screen - please guys don't second this HBO madness.
@TheZzZzZzZzZzA
I will watch it in IMAX.
I had no idea what the movie was about and watched in on a long distance flight 😖 At some point I tried to stop because the screen size was ridiculous, but I couldn't, I had to watch it till the end.
Am now waiting for it to return to a proper cinema screen before the second part is released.

He's right up there with Nolan and such. 2049 was my favorite of His but DUNE is something special.
Woah...woah... that's a very personal opinion, there are other good directors too like nolan and all

Stephen played that so cool, when we all know he was absolutely freaking out on the inside
Oh yes, he was! 😄 I absolutely love Stephen's show, he's an amazing host and interviewer and it's just adorable when his own fanboying sometimes is seeping through his calm and professional appearance! :) I bet if he was interviewing Timothee, or Jason Momoa or Oscar Isaac he might have unleashed it a little bit 😄
he probably made denis feel comfortable just talking about dune and not asking basic questions and really just connecting with him through the story, great interview
He interviewed Denis almost exactly 1 year ago already. It was basically the same questions too, but at the time they thought it was going to be released in a couple months. This is more or less a reminder that the movie is coming out because it was delayed a year
Denis was the only one really freaking out. You can tell he doesn’t like being in front of an audience
Dune was released in some parts of the world already and I saw it at an IMAX theatre here in Norway a few weeks ago. Absolutely stunning movie and as faithful an adaptation of the book as you could probably get away with. Definitely among the best Sci-fi movies ever made.
@Captain Deckard Spock yes, but it was always intended to be more than one movie - as long as the box office receipts were good enough on the first part which it looks like they are.
@Captain Deckard Spock Seems a bit churlish Cap'n. I think we can be pretty sure, given the international sales, that Part Two will be made. So, if you're a fan of the books, don't waste your chance to see Part One on the big screen.
@Captain Deckard Spock lol, great reply mate, worthy of a proper Cap'n :-) Good luck on the lockdown.
Question: is it okey to just read the first Dune book? I heard the other ones were not so good and I wanted to know if the first one could be kind of a stand alone book with a beginning and end

A bit of trivia. I remember when Denis Villeneuve started his filmmaking career as a young contestant on the French CBC show "La Course Autour du Monde" (The race around the world). Young aspiring filmmakers had to submit a short film every week from a different location. Each contestant's film was then graded by judges on the weekly program. This was, of course, well before the advent of digital cameras, which made the process of shooting say, in a jungle, and then editing, etc... a lot more difficult. Cameras got broken, film got lost, etc... It was akin to guerilla filmmaking and tested more than just mastery of filmmaking tehniques. Denis Villeneuve won the 1990-1991 edition of "La Course Europe-Asie".
That's so cool I didn't know that👍Saw what I believe was his first feature, "Le 32 août sur terre" (1998), thru some invite, by, idk, La Société de la-something-something (can't remember)... he must've been in his early 20s back then! A really enjoyable film
The way they edited Paul's perspective to mirror his feeling momentarily confused when the reverend mother used the voice is great.
Yeah ! The darkened/tunnel vision and then the snapping back in to awareness. So well done. Damn, I'm so looking forward to this movie.
I live in Germany and saw the movie it’s absolutely amazing
I didn't read the book, but this movie was amazing. The visual experience was truly unique.

I literally cannot wait. I assume it was English with subtitles in Germany ? I might fly to Frankfurt for the weekend (I'm in the UK), lol. EDIT - I only make that assumption because of my respect that a lot of the German audience will be able to understand the original voice actors.

My expectations were high, and they were exceeded. You will not be disappointed.
I don't understand why the Internet is not blowing up over this film. To me it's the new Star Wars for sure.
It is SO MUCH BETTER than Star Wars!
@@margaret6839 word! Saw it today...... This is far better than star wars... It's not even close.
Star Wars walked so that Dune could run. There were even a lot of Star Wars-inspired visuals in the movie, I felt. But I wholeheartedly agree, this should be the next Sci-Fi franchise.
@@NateGH36O In a sense is a kind of recursive inspiration, in multiple degrees, since Dune (the book) was partly inspired by Lawrence of Arabia, and Star Wars took a lot of cues from Dune and Lawrence for the Tatooine parts, specially. And in both of Dune's cinema adaptations, some cues were taken from Star Wars and Lawrence.
Better than Star Wars in my opinion. I’m sure Oscar Isaac was happy to get away from that last Disney cinematic mess!
Give this man his damn Oscar already.
Seeing Dune in a movie theatre really was a once in a lifetime experience. I'm glad they moved the movie and not just released it on streaming, because it really deserves to be seen on the biggest screen possible. The amount of detail and the overall scale of the movie should be viewed on a cinema screen and the beautiful music by Hans Zimmer really hits your body with a right sound system (I guess that's how you can call it, non-native speaker here). So if, or more likely WHEN you find some free 2,5 hours, go watch Dune in the nearest theatre. You wont be disapoinent, it's a visual masterpiece, the most beautiful movie since Avatar ❤️
Thanks for your comment! I totally agree.
I can't imagine missing seeing Dune on the big screen. Villeneuve is such an artist and the cast is so absolutely enthralling that you have to give it its due.
born and raised in korea, i was not familiar with dune so i read the book just before going to the theaters. and I was just absolutely transported and stunned. not like anything i've seen before in terms of scale. Dune is to sci-fi what Lord of the Rings is to fantasy. Set the stage and inspired so many other works after. And this movie is a wonderful adaptation like Peter Jackson's.
Steven has an Encyclopedic knowledge of Dune, just as he does Lord of the Rings. He is one of the best-read interviewers on tv. He can spontaneously quote Shakespeare head to head with Sir Ian or the Bible with Ricky Gervais.

When Colbert compares something to lotr, you know he genuinely appreciates it!!
Prisoners is a fascinating film. He makes movies worth watching more than once because he knows how to tell an intricate story.
There are so many directors that I love and he's quickly become one of them. I love how he uses sounds and music not to set the mood but to amplify it. He doesn't overdo it either effectively using silence together with breathtaking visuals. He lets the visuals tell the story rather than over relying on long, verbose dialogue. Throwback to the older directors and their style.
I've seen some some criticism's floating around about this movie(as, frankly, any good movie should provoke). But one thing that is undeniable is that this movie was made with love. Love of the source material, love of character, love of cinema.
