Dune is releasing very soon and after watching the film early, I can say that I was floored. Here is my spoiler free review for Denis Villeneuve's film.
Thanks for sharing. I’m hoping it combines the visuals of 2049 with the depth of Arrival, that would be the perfect combination. I loved the philosophical depth of Arrival and the visuals of 2049, but ultimately was left unsatisfied by 2049. I hope this film bridges the gap. Looking forward to the next video 👍
I must not watch Dune on home cinema. Home cinema is the vibe killer. Home cinema is the little screen that brings total disappointment. I will face the IMAX. I will permit the subwoofer frequencies to pass over me, and through me. And when the credits have gone past, I will turn the inner hype towards Part 2. Where the fear of Dune being unfilmable has gone, there will be nothing. Only awe will remain.
Pretty spot-on review really, i like how in depth you go without spoiling anything. Especially about Paul and Jessica.👌🏽 I reckon were definitely getting a part two with the box office numbers.🤞🏽 Good work Cortex bro.💯👊🏽
@@CortexVideos WB/HBO have licensed the entire Dune IP. Denis is set to direct the pilot for the HBO prequel series Dune: The Sisterhood with Brian Herbert Exec Producing, and Kevin Anderson Co-Producing. HBO needs a bigger IP than ASOIAF, and Dune is it. We're definitely getting Part 2.
I would give it a 9.8. My best cinema experience was Tarzan as a child and Phil Collins with the music, so there is that, but everything about this movie is just so well done. The first movie ever I’ll see twice in the cinema ever, later tonight.
I got to the movie theatre and collected my ticket and it was Dune. Now here is the big surprise, the entire movie theatre was empty, it was just for me. No one else was there. “You can sit any where you like” said the usher. I sat down and said “ Please hand me the remote, or ask the operator to hit Play for me”, no noise no distractions. The movie was epic, never a dull moment let me start with Epic Cenima It’s truly like watching Lawrence of Arabia in space, it has that type of magic, I knew I was watching something special that people will talk about for years to come. It really felt like I was watching a novel come to life. The scenery: The movie really take you to a different world, and I don’t mean this from a plot point, but actual escapism. I couldn’t think of anything else while watching the movie accept the movie itself, it really pulled me in. Mind you that I have been to Jorden and experienced this desert first hand, and it is beautiful. The music: Yes it’s not a score that I will be listen to while driving, but it supported the story like special effects and sound design. The music was a character in the story. The new sounds is nothing new to Zimmers agend, but still very impressive. The Pipe scene was specially epic. The acting: Every one brought their A-game, simple as that. Hats off to all The plot: There isn’t one dull moment, the movies moves and breath at a perfect pace, there is no fillers or extended scene that are not needed. You will simply be shocked of how long you’ve been sitting in your seat without moving. The sets and customs: My God, it’s enough to say alien world yet still made by humans. It did not put me off or reminded me that we are in space like other Star-movies (which I love by the way). The customs specially were amazing Cinematography: Brilliant. I never thought I would admire a shot made with the backs of all the actors (when you see the movie you will know which one I am talking about) The ending: I really felt the ground fell underneath me, and I had to remind myself to breath again!
Good movie but could have been better. The doctor needed at least 5 min more screentime to develop his character. The Baron wasn't scary, smart nor sadistic, he was just a fat floating blob with zero character. Beast Rabban was the biggest disappointment for me. Maybe 3 very short scenes with 10 spoken words. Oh yeah, his brother Fayd isn't even in the movie🤷 But I still enjoyed every minute of the movie, I just wanted even more:-)
I disagree with you on the Baron not being scary or sadistic. I think it was well-established what kind of being he was and for a 12A, he was intimidating enough as an antagonist - especially the depiction of his movement. The big issue, and I do agree with you there, is that his intellect really didn't come across. What stands out from the novel is the level of thought and intelligence behind his grotesque form and sadistic nature. I really didn't get any of that from the film.
I really loved the feel and scope of the movie but I really disliked a few of the set/costume details that took you out of the moment of certain scenes. Having Bonsai plant in the background for breakfast. The Matador painting and bull head. The Japanese umbrella in the arrival to Aracus scene, Zendiya's flip flops, The car seat buckle when Paul and his mother were flying away...Maybe I am being to much detail oriented but with all those amazing scenes that transported you to another place it was a shame to bring you back like being hit with a rock in your face. But I still really loved the movie...
I've seen DUNE twice already, once in IMAX and once on a regular screen, and I cannot wait ot see it again. It is the most magnificent cinema experience I've had since The Fellowship of The Rings back in 2001. A complete technical and artistic wonder.
It is just crap man, the actor looks like a 12 year old girl, fuck off. no mentats, no CHOAM, no emperor, no irulan, no nothing. It is just a visual spectacle, it has nothing of the lore and mysticism of the books. NEXT!
@@khelbenarunsun7284 I read the book, and most of those things are not mentioned in detail until the second half of the book. You do know that the movie only encompasses the first half of the book, right?
@@khelbenarunsun7284 Well there are at least two mentats portrayed in this film for starters, and the emperor is referred to and affects the plot in key ways throughout. And no mysticism…? Either wait til you’ve seen it before commenting so aggressively, or if you’ve seen it, watch it again but keep your brain set to "on" this time.
Visually, the movie is stunning, but this isn't difficult to do in the era of photorealistic CGI. The biggest flaw is them omitting much of the details which makes the Dune universe so unique and colorful. Perhaps, this will be addressed in part 2 of the movie. Ironically, because it goes less about the different factions of Dune, it also makes it easier for the audience to watch as there is a lot less information to digest. The Lynch version of the movie delve more into the Dune universe but that movie is also harder to watch because there's so much to take in.
I have watched it every night since it came out, and love it more every time. I give it a perfect 10! I'm going to see it in IMAX over the weekend and I can't wait!! I was completely blown away by every single thing...the cast, the acting, the adaptation, the score, the attention to detail, the sets and wardrobes, the cinematography that made it the beautifully rich film, I hoped it would be!! It did not disappoint, at all and I honestly can't believe I've read a couple of negative reviews...when I found it lived up to the hype and then some! I liked how detailed the writing was that made it flow nicely and really easy to follow for those unfamiliar with the books...Or the original movie, which missed the mark for me, personally! It's by far the most amazing movie I've seen in a very long time and deserving of so many awards I can't think of an area in where it fails!! It stayed true to the books, for the most part and I didn't find myself missing the few things left out, at all. I agree with your review completely! It is a sci-fi masterpiece for the ages! So well done!!👏👏👏
Great analysis, I completely resonate with your passion and appreciation of the work. It's a beautiful film and was a truly immersive experience on the IMAX.
Oh 100%. In my opinion, the score is up there with his best work like inception, gladiator, interstellar and so on. It’s just so original and a breathing force in the movie
I found the score to be a little too loud and ever present. It was fine as part of establishment shots, but when it drowned out the dialogue I wish they'd toned it back a bit.
As a self avowed Dune-file, I was floored. Please buy box office tickets because that is what will drive the completion of Frank Herbert’s first Dune novel to be completed Villeneuve. Remarkable. I can’t wait to watch it in the theater.
Never read the books myself, but I was that one guy who loved the 80s version. But this one... it crushes any other sci-fi movie I've ever seen. This was damn near the perfect scifi film.
I love the movie, I am going to see it again this Sunday. The one thing I didn't like were a few of the ending scenes of the movie: in the book there are a few key scenes involving Dr. Kynes and the Fremen, which were much more epic in the book than what we see in the movie. A few story aspects around dr. Yueh are also lacking. But the way this movie starts is much, much better than the book, in my opinion. There are also some scenes added which weren't in the book which really help show the Dune universe instead of telling about it. I was really happy that my friends who didn't read the book understood all of the complex plot, and they all said it looked and sounded epic. Denis pulled off the impossible. I can't wait for part 2!
How did you find the second viewing? I saw it again today and I loved it even more. The narrative decisions make so much more sense and there were so many details I missed the first time around. In my first watch, I felt like I was too concerned with the omission/addition of certain scenes to really engage with the movie.
@@gobigod2274 "blatant chosen one story" Really dude? Did you forget about those weird visions that Paul was having? Massive hint there. I don't want to spoil anything further but yes, it's best to just wait for the second movie or read ahead in the books to find out what happens to him later on
@@DG-gx4sg im talking about this movie yes they could take Paul into a very interesting way but I haven't read the books so when I watched the first movie it was an obvious chosen one story not saying they cant change the way his character is going most beloved characters are limited to their first movie and through other movies they grow more and become amazing characters so hopefully that is what happens to Paul but based off the first movie its a blatant chosen one story
@@gobigod2274 It does feel like a chosen one story but only if you take it at surface level. There a lot of things already revealed in Part 1 of the movie that should've made you question if this is chosen one thing is really true or not so I'm surprised you still thought it was blatant. If you remember the scene near the beginning between Jessica and the Reverend Mother, it actually explains how Paul ended up as this figure, it didn't happen for no reason or out of pure magic or "destiny" like 99% of other chosen one stories. So it's not quite the same thing. And once again, those visions Paul was having should reveal to the audience what Paul really is. I think this a movie that definitely needs multiple viewings because the small details and overall point of the story is something a lot of people can easily miss.
Thanks for your review! I agree with you on all points. For me, "Dune" is a masterpiece, I really want to see a sequel. I've seen this movie twice in IMAX, and I'm going to watch it for the third time. My advice to those who are just going to watch DUNE: go to the movie with low expectations, and then you will like everything. Before going to the cinema, I listened to very bad criticism from two fans of Villeneuve and a fan of Dune. They didn't like it at all, absolutely… They said that the film was empty… everything was bad ... So I was very upset, I was in a bad mood… But as soon as the movie started everything changed for me!!! This was the world I imagined when I read the book. So don't expect anything and you will get everything.
I don't think it's a masterpiece, but me and my brother (I've read the book and am a Villenueve fan, he's neither) both really liked it! (Have made a review of it on my channel) Really looking forward to rewatching it if it improves the experience like that.
@@YggdrasilAudio Well, that's okay. "All markers are different in taste and color" :))) That is why I advise those who go to watch the film not to expect too much. We all love different things, so what is a masterpiece for one is total shit for another.
@@OlenaSapphira But I think the expectations I had kinda helped the experience same way as with you! Some of the early reviews were lukewarm for such a hyped movie, yet it really worked for me.
I've seen it twice, I would have watched it again, but I have to drive 80 km to see it in original version. I guess that says a lot. Dune is my favorite book ever (and I read A LOT), and this movie finally made it justice. It is beautiful, enthralling, awe-inspiring, jaw-dropping. I have no words. I'm obsessed with it. I do hope they adapt all the books.
I don't, it's a rushed poor adaptation, yes visually it's breathtaking and beautiful, but as an adaptation it's plain bad, not even average just bad, great characters virtually ignored, and the writing of Jessica is just laughably bad, a borderline neurotic on the edge of hysteria is not even close to the book, Rebecca Ferguson is a great actress and does the best she can with what she got but it's so, so bad I couldn't believe what I was seeing. Movie buffs will enjoy the visual spectacle, I know I did and it will stay with me, but fans who really know the books will be disappointed once the hype wears off.
I've seen the movie the 17th of September and it is still with me. That says a lot regarding the impact. It's the first movie I have ever seen where every single part of the production is in harmony with the story and because of that, in service of the acting. Every single part it of the highest level and at the same time never rises above the other parts. It makes it a unique and amazing experience. I get the comparison for 2001 a space odyssey but where that movie looses me is in the characters and story and that is something that is so wildly enjoyable in Dune. I give it a 10+
For me visually the Thopters were just mind blowing! I still can't believe how amazing they look! And do you remember that these thopters used to look like metal "boxes" in Lynch's version :D ? They were literally boxes out of metal or something.
I agree, but they were the only thing cool about he movie. There was very little technology, and many scenes in caves and in the desert. Then it just ended.
For me personally, the last time I felt this way was when I watched 2009 Avatar. Dune was simply amazing and I was surprised to find that I haven’t read this epic book before. Maybe it is because the last two years haven’t had any real “good” films and there has, in generally, been a decline of the “epic” films. The sound and music of dune was very unique and added to the epicness of this film.
I already watched Dune three times at the cinema here in Austria. One of the best movies I saw in years. Watch it on the biggest screen possible. It's not just a movie. The visuals, the music, the epicness combined is an crazy experience you will not forget in years.
@@diogeneslaertius3365 minority report is a masterpiece. Spielberg’s second best after Schindler’s List. No one talks about Minority Report anymore for some reason. I remember reading the review in the Daily News newspaper in 2002, stating it was Spielberg’s best film to date. And keep in mind, this was 9 years after Schindler came out, and 4 years after private Ryan. My personal top Spielberg ranking would go….Schindler>minorityReport>Jaws>privateRyan
No, it wasn't good, it missed al lot of the story, there was almost no background on dr. Huey. There was no story about the Emperor at all, where was the Guild and Navigator scene ? The Harkonnen didn't look much to be feared of and we got to see the Baron for only 5 minutes ? It looked very good but the storyline... It reminded me of the new Star Wars movies.
Yeah there is a lot missing and poorly shown in this movie and it was only covering half the book… the previous film version wasn’t that good but it is still much better than this one, even if it is a really weird film.
This was half a movie (not necessarily a problem) but what we were left with by the end was the end of a scene but not enough to constitute the end of an act let alone the end of a 2.5 hour epic. As carefully paced and considered as much of the character development and plot were, I still was left wanting more - especially from some of the characters that were killed off. I found this to be a less than satisfying experience overall and was utterly shocked at the lacklustre ending. This was half a movie without the pay-off 2.5 hours of careful development of narrative (and audience investment) deserved. I understand the episodic nature of the film but within each part (this being the first of at least 2 one would hope!) you need a substantive enough resolution before moving on - this didn't happen. I need to see it again and have booked an i-max viewing to see if this might help get a better sense of immersion (for all it's slick and skilful production it often lacked certain moments of transcendent pitch and outright insane strangeness that the David Lynch version was able to deliver, despite its flaws). A rather impressive and lengthy appetiser but no meal... ...Update/edit: Saw it again on i-Max. Have to say, it did seem to come together much better on a second viewing. I'm sure the larger screen helped, but also, I think I was more able to receive the film on it's own terms and not make comparisons with certain cross-over scenes (with the Lynch version) this time around. Smaller details and larger themes seemed to gel enough in order to lend more weight and significance to individual scenes this time - I was genuinely surprised at my reaction after seeing it twice. Part 2 is still (seriously) needed though, Denis.
@@homosapien4672 Actually it could be the best science fiction movie of the decade honestly it is up there with the likes of Arrival , Interstellar and Blade Runner 2049 other than that we have not had much that was that great this decade (Star wars 7-8-9 was bad) Rogue one was great but not on the level of Arrival or BR2049. it's holding a solid 8.4 on IMDB based on almost 80K reviews to put that in perspective other 8.4 films are Apocalypse Now , Alien , The Shining and the list goes on. Edit Technically all those films were last decade so with that being said it certainly IS the best science fiction of the 2020's so far.
Highly appreciative review and fairly so! Unfortunately, I've waited too long to watch the movie, thus missing the eagerly awaited IMAX experience. Nevertheless, the regular screening has blasted me away and I can testify it's not an absolute necessity to appreciate this monument of a film on the biggest possible screen. It does contain all ingredients to captivate the viewer, Dune connoisseur or not, transporting the willing to a desert far, far away and well beyond. Everything up to the slightest detail has been given form with the greatest realism. It's all actually there, right in front your eyes... and ears, not forgetting about Zimmer's unearthly input. The ornithopters, technically a tour-de-force to visualize, are jaw dropping. The movie's scope is unseen and gasping for Part Two.
I do hope Denis emphasizes Jessica's influence on Paul. Her urging Paul to use the Freman; they are the soldiers Duke Leto had wanted to use against the Emperor. These Fremen were regarded as just a means to an end, which makes Paul's future and the future of Dune so much more heartbreaking
Its release is still a week away here in the USA, and I cannot wait. I've been a heavy Dune nerd for decades and this movie looks like a dream come true.
I also was hoping to see a little bit of the different planets, like Caladan, Giedi prime and that Sardaukar homeworld. But, there was nothing worth mentioning:-\
Saw last night, loved it, an audio visual delight, no surprise coming from the team that brought the sensational Blade Runner 2049, all in for Part 2, appreciate this review
First movie I ever went to see twice in cinema. Chills and awe, 9/10. I've started book 2 in the meanwhile and I can't wait to see how denis translates the 2nd part to film, too. Though judging by the first, it's going to be fantastic.
If it's as rushed as the first it's going to be all style and no substance, don't get me wrong as a spectacle it's amazing, as an adaptation, which if you've started reading the book you'll realise, it's very poor.
@@gs8494 I've already finished the book. I don't know what people expect from 2.5 hour movies, but the movie had enough substance to convey the main points of the book. Yes, you can't film internal bene gesserit dialogue or spend 15 minutes on exposition of them. It's actually a bit slow paced at the start as is.
@@kjaesp Considering its length and how much of the book it covers it is poor, there's compromises to be made to get things on the big screen, I get that, but so far even the David Lynch movie in 84 did a better job and that took a lot of liberties with its adaptation and tried to tell the whole story. The worst for me is that some important characters were for the most part ignored, the mentats Thufir Hawat and Pieter De Vries, no back story on Dr Yueh and his betrayal, and the absolute worst for me was the writing of Jessicas part, Rebecca Ferguson is an outstanding actress and they gave her the worst writing imaginable, it's so far removed from the book it couldn't have been as bad if they writen that way deliberately, in the book shes stoic and composed to nth degree, which she would be, the concubine of a Duke of a great house and Bene Gesserit, but in the movie shes written like a borderline neurotic on the edge of hysteria, in the book shes worried about Pauls meeting with the Rverend mother but she still allows the meeting to take place and the only time that composure cracks is when she and Paul are in the desert escaping from the Harkonnens and she finally accepts Leto is dead, even then it's not for long and she composes herself and the mask drops. It's not that compromises were made, as I say I get that, but there's no way around the fact it's a poor and rushed movie. Visually fuck me, it is stunning, it's the best looking movie I've seen since Justin Kurzels 2016 MacBeth, which is like a cinematic work of art, it is so beautiful, Dune is the same expcept planet sized, how it looks and Skaarsgards Baron are the best things about the movie, everything else is lacking and it's a shame it really could've beeen the movie that people seem to think it is.
We don't get to see it in Australia until December. I'm desperately trying to avoid streaming it (a friend found a version on Plex) though the temptation is high I want my first experience in a cinema. No Imax in my city but I'll finds the biggest screen possible!
I agree with everything you said; 100%! DUNE was absolutely fantastic, in every way! THE LORD OF THE RINGS for this generation! I've already seen it twice on the IMAX screen and am planning to see it again! I agree completely that it is, by far, the BEST FILM FILM OF THE YEAR, so far...but, seriously, what's going to top this epic cinematic achievement in 2021!?!?
True but one thing I would say is that in the technical awards it’s going to be a big contender. I wouldn’t be surprised too if it’s this years mad max fury road at the Oscars. We’ll just have to see really
Gonna be my first time seeing a movie where I’ve previously read the book and know the gist of the plot, never been a huge reader and also fairly young so a lot of the books I’ve read already had movie adaptations but very excited to see how that affects my viewing experience
Agree 100%, it's effing brilliant. The time did not drag for me in the slightest, I seriously could have watched for another hour. I pray that WB and Villeneuve restore all the deleted scenes for a full extended cut someday because I want to see EVERYTHING. Even if it's six hours long, I'm in. Bring on Part 2!!
Dune 2021 failed to deliver that climatic aristorcratic atmosphere and tension as its predecessor. The depth of the prodagonist was a shallow reflection of the original.I was hoping for more ,all the hype that it would have lived up to the Dune we remember .
Best movie of the decade more like. Story, acting, cinematography, tech, design, choreography, symbology, music... And no ridiculous wokeness. This was the best movie I've seen since Return of the King.
It must be a really terrible year then, since the TV series was completely better than any movie could be. Dune 2021 had no reason to be remade for the fans. The director likes making inferior versions of things, like his new blade runner.
Fantastic review. I'm extremely glad that you got to see this film and experience it in such an immersive way. I've loved the Frank Herbert novel. When I first saw the David Lynch version of "Dune" when it came out in 1984, I didn't understand it but have since come to appreciate it. I've also seen the 2000 Sci-Fi Channel mini-series and really dove into the complexity of the story even more. Denis Villeneuve is one of my favorite directors who loves to tackle rich complex stories.
Very much agree with this review. Loved the movie. What I liked best was how textured it felt, with so many little details hinting at the wider universe or at aspects of the story outside the main narrative.
A great movie... but I missed the 'spacing guild navigator and the Emperor' scene from the original Dune movie...Also, Baron Harkonnen was too clean and not as impactful as Kenneth McMillan's portrayal in the original movie...However, I would score it 8/10
This movie was visually stunning, but I wish some of the dialogue was enunciated clearer. For example, twice when Jessica recites the fear litany, I could only make out 30% of what she was saying. Good thing I've read the whole Dune saga twice. Plus, for those who aren't familiar with the story, I have a feeling they are going to ask, "why don't they fight with guns instead of knives." This was not explained in the movie. Also the pacing is off. I give this movie a 3.5/5.
I agree with you regarding the dialogue and the mainstream audience questioning the use of swords and spears, rather than projectile weaponry. As you say, there were a few scenes where a combination of enunciation and poorly-balanced score (just too loud next to dialogue) meant I was really struggling. Again, having read the text I can fill the blanks but the general audience goer can't. The film does a good job recreating what I had imagined the mixture of blades, shields, projectile launchers/artillery and las weaponry (with its explosive consequences) to be like, but if I was a general viewer I would be confused why such a seemingly advanced technological world isn't using more traditional 'guns'. I did really like the way the shields were depicted though, but there was nothing in the film that made it obvious or clear why this was the standard issue weaponry across the board (Atreides, Harkonnen and Sardaukar all being primarily blade users).
To put it politely ... I was totally underwhelmed by the movie. Good movie ...yes, no doubt. Best movie of the year so far ...... not by a mile. Hollywood has decided to turn this into a franchise, with a part 2 in the works already. The original stands supreme.
I think all these reviewers got paid, i saw the movie and it was ok and a bit boring. The vision stuff is really repetitive and by the end of the movie you feel as if you just watched a 3 hour commercial for the sequel. LOL The last scene is literally a one on one fight with shit choreography.
Hard disagree and to answer your question, no I don't get paid. I review films as objectively as I see them. If you didn't know, movies are subjective at the end of the day and most people have a brain to understand that...
I'm a die-hard fan of all things Dune, and I'm afraid this movie did not do it for me at all. The muted, drab cinematic LUTs extracted all sense of richness from the universe. You're supposed to feel the pain of the Atreides as they uproot from a lush, wet world to live on a scorched barren rock, but Caladan looked like a bleak Scottish coastline, almost as inhospitable as Arrakis. Why does Baron H live in a black-walled, dimly-lit bunker? He's supposed to be a glutton with gaudy, extravagant and expensive tastes. There was scant explanation of who anyone was or what they were doing, yet the myriad cultures and customs detailed in the book were part of what made it so compellingly complete. Did the word 'mentat' get used once? Suk Doctor? Swordmaster of Ginaz? This didn't matter so much to me, since I know the stuff, but to anyone else it just left an adventure movie behind. Why the totally pointless gender change of Kynes? Why the total omission of the Lord and Lady Fenring story arc which adds so much to the initial Machiavellian inter-house intrigues and sets up the Bene Gesserit's meddling in every corner of the universe? Why was the Spacing Guild, apart from a brief cameo in silly helmets, barely evident? Why was Jessica such a grey-faced, sullen hag? She's supposed to be ethereal and enchanting. Why does all the armour (in a world with hidden shields anyway) look like stuff from Halo? To be honest, Lynch's 1984 version, despite its many horrible flaws, did a better job of conveying the rich, multi-coloured and multi-layered universe. Sorry, this was just a vehicle for the two A-list action heroes to shoot a few guns.
word for word some of my thoughts after watching the film last night. either Villeneuve didn't really get all of these subtleties of the book you mentioned, or he intentionally omitted them in order to cater to the wider audience. similar to blade runner 2049 which didn't really bring anything new to the table and dragged on for too long without much substance.
Saw it on IMAX then watched it again at home. So good. Also pushing thru the book for the 1st time. This movie is a breath of fresh air compared to what studios have been giving us.
I barely have ever given anything a 10. There are slight flaws that would really only seem like nitpicks for me but still, my highest rated film of all time is probably a 9.5 so a 9.25 is what I consider to be extremely high. But rating aside I loved it
It is breathtakingly beautiful. And book-close (maybe abit to much). I wanted more time with Oscar Isaac's Leto. Timothy, Rebecca, Oscar and especially Charlotte Rampling as Reverend Mother Mohiam is ultra casting. Paul and RM more would have been nice. Sad to say Josh and Jason doesnt quite cut it, and i love em both. This is House Atredies. Duncan (JM) pretty much saying "My boy" all the time (trailers) treating Paul like a boy, and then 20min later saying Duke. While Leto (OI) treets his son with respect and firm guidance. Gurney (JB) shouting about the Harks is not engaging, and then both of them dies...(actually all three. Well Duncan "0" does). More Paul and Bene Gesserit.
Am I the only one who thinks the tent scene slowed down the pacing of the film? Don’t get me wrong, I have seen Dune twice. It’s a beautiful film and the storytelling is amazing. But imo the pacing of the film after the mid-climax slowed down a bit to the point where I though the film could’ve been shorter.
Ayo you do know that star wars and blade runner got they ideas from dune the original books so yea everything you like bout all other fantasy space base movies or books is bc of dune
@@CortexVideos ahhh oh ok got you the way it did ended it was kinda blah like really couldn’t just finish the whole story really and not make a 2 part that’s just me
I loved this film. i didnt like some of the sound effects which were a bit dated and threw me out of the film but i loved everything else. whenever i hear the african/arabic woman crying out sound it always makes me think of cinema sins or the lion king. and whenever i hear the loud noise that the spaceships make (like a honk or something) it reminds me of godzilla. Dune is much better than that and i just wish those two sound effects werent used quite as much as they are.
Dune is releasing very soon and after watching the film early, I can say that I was floored. Here is my spoiler free review for Denis Villeneuve's film.
Glad it lived up to your expectations!
I agree with you. I'm watched four times by now.
Thanks for sharing the experience. I'll just bought the ticket for the imax premier... So anxious

And when the credits have gone past, I will turn the inner hype towards Part 2.
Where the fear of Dune being unfilmable has gone, there will be nothing. Only awe will remain.

Lol I'm gonna see it in IMAX and then Dolby Cinema one hour after that gets out.
Wow, very good
Haha! Yes, very good. Fighting the good fight! got my ticket for 21st Oct (UK release) already booked at local IMAX
Man, you nailed it! :))
Pretty spot-on review really, i like how in depth you go without spoiling anything. Especially about Paul and Jessica.👌🏽
I reckon were definitely getting a part two with the box office numbers.🤞🏽
Good work Cortex bro.💯👊🏽
Thanks bro. I really hope so. It’s all down to the US really
With your eye for detail, level of fandom & such high expectation…to be still so blown away…wow! The excruciating wait for us in Oz continues.
Thanks for adding to my already bubbling excitement for this film!! Great spoiler free review!!
So happy you enjoyed it :) as a longtime fan of Herbert's work, I am very excited to see it in IMAX later this month!
I've been waiting for this video. Love it
Seriously. The most encompassing critique I've ever experienced. A tour de force.
Will watch it in late October , hey Cortex , will you cover House of the dragon ?
I’m gonna watch it again multiple times on the first week. And I will probably cover house of the dragon as we get closer too it yes
The movie was epic, never a dull moment let me start with
Epic Cenima
It’s truly like watching Lawrence of Arabia in space, it has that type of magic, I knew I was watching something special that people will talk about for years to come. It really felt like I was watching a novel come to life.
The scenery:
The movie really take you to a different world, and I don’t mean this from a plot point, but actual escapism. I couldn’t think of anything else while watching the movie accept the movie itself, it really pulled me in. Mind you that I have been to Jorden and experienced this desert first hand, and it is beautiful.
The music:
Yes it’s not a score that I will be listen to while driving, but it supported the story like special effects and sound design. The music was a character in the story. The new sounds is nothing new to Zimmers agend, but still very impressive. The Pipe scene was specially epic.
The acting:
Every one brought their A-game, simple as that. Hats off to all
The plot:
There isn’t one dull moment, the movies moves and breath at a perfect pace, there is no fillers or extended scene that are not needed. You will simply be shocked of how long you’ve been sitting in your seat without moving.
The sets and customs:
My God, it’s enough to say alien world yet still made by humans. It did not put me off or reminded me that we are in space like other Star-movies (which I love by the way). The customs specially were amazing
Cinematography:
Brilliant. I never thought I would admire a shot made with the backs of all the actors (when you see the movie you will know which one I am talking about)
The ending:
I really felt the ground fell underneath me, and I had to remind myself to breath again!
Thanks for sharing, Awsome review you really know how to this, great insights.
Honestly, best sci-fi fantasy since lotr
The score from Hans Zimmer is just perfect!
Oh yeah, his brother Fayd isn't even in the movie🤷
But I still enjoyed every minute of the movie, I just wanted even more:-)
I disagree with you on the Baron not being scary or sadistic.
Can I ask, did you see the film in 3D or 2D? Couse i worry that IMAX is 3D.only
I really loved the feel and scope of the movie but I really disliked a few of the set/costume details that took you out of the moment of certain scenes.
Fair enough about some of that, but the bull head is literally straight from the book and repeatedly described exactly as it appears on-screen.
@Ten O I can try
I'm taking that day off gonna be watching this on repeat
Great analysis, I completely resonate with your passion and appreciation of the work. It's a beautiful film and was a truly immersive experience on the IMAX.
Much appreciated!
Nice nice nice! I can’t wait
Dune wouldn't have been as good without Hans Zimmer's score. That man elevated to script to legendary heights
Oh 100%. In my opinion, the score is up there with his best work like inception, gladiator, interstellar and so on. It’s just so original and a breathing force in the movie
100%
I loved his score as well! It's so original
Zimmer nails it. Glad he made this film his priority.
Already have my tickets for IMAX set. It's going to be a long 2 weeks!
I can't wait for part 2!
the only thing I didnt like was the blatant chosen one story and the ending scene but this movie is supposed to be a 2 part movie
I agree! It is a Masterpiece and it gets even better after multiple viewings.
It *is* empty.
I hope they do Brian's and Anderson's. Those were phenomenal too..better than Frank's sequels IMO
@@gs8494 I saw lots of holes myself and the treatment of the Shadout Mapes was disgraceful
@@dragonfox2.058 you like Brian and Anderson’s books. Opinion discarded.
@@9thebear supposedly ALL Frank Herbert's outlines doncha know?
I've seen the movie the 17th of September and it is still with me. That says a lot regarding the impact.
It's the first movie I have ever seen where every single part of the production is in harmony with the story and because of that, in service of the acting. Every single part it of the highest level and at the same time never rises above the other parts. It makes it a unique and amazing experience.
I get the comparison for 2001 a space odyssey but where that movie looses me is in the characters and story and that is something that is so wildly enjoyable in Dune. I give it a 10+
Completely agree. I think it's a masterpiece of filmaking.
Can't wait for this man! Blessing.

@@putinscat1208 That´s dune, it´s supposed to be little technology involved.
@@TheTazzietiger Boring, boring boring. Only the coptors were cool.
@@putinscat1208 too bad for you.
@@alben1703 Too bad what? It's no skin off my nose that Dune 2021 disappointed.
Really hope the movie is good! Glad to hear you enjoyed it!
I already watched Dune three times at the cinema here in Austria. One of the best movies I saw in years. Watch it on the biggest screen possible. It's not just a movie. The visuals, the music, the epicness combined is an crazy experience you will not forget in years.
Interstellar is my favorite scifi movie of all time. Followed closely by 2001 and Minority Report. So this looks right up my ally.
Minority Report doesn't belong that list.
IM SO EXCITED I CANT WAIT! Life is good!
Part 2 is still (seriously) needed though, Denis.
great review man
Cheers
Wonderful review, cannot wait for this
Hope you enjoy Jorge. Watch it in the biggest theatre you can!
Movie of the decade!
Nope
I mean I agree it is the best movie that came out in this year.
@@XavierLignieres inception and interstellar are still best for me
Highly appreciative review and fairly so!
Well, I get to see DUNE in a few days. I'm glad Denis is raising the bar for movie making in general. I might get to the theater more often!
It's a spectacular movie. An amazing experience to watch this in the cinemas. I was an awe the whole time.
Its release is still a week away here in the USA, and I cannot wait. I've been a heavy Dune nerd for decades and this movie looks like a dream come true.
I also was hoping to see a little bit of the different planets, like Caladan, Giedi prime and that Sardaukar homeworld. But, there was nothing worth mentioning:-\
ikr? there was just a stock picture before the shot the baron.

I wouldn't hold out hope for any awards. Sci-fi is almost always scoffed at.
True but one thing I would say is that in the technical awards it’s going to be a big contender. I wouldn’t be surprised too if it’s this years mad max fury road at the Oscars. We’ll just have to see really

Dune 2021 failed to deliver that climatic aristorcratic
atmosphere and tension as its predecessor.
This is the most intense sci-fi film I’ve seen. I just hate waiting for part two. I loved the 1984 film and this one is nothing like it.
Agree 100% with your review. It's the best Sci-Fi movie I've seen in decades. Out-does Star Wars franchise by miles.
It must be a really terrible year then, since the TV series was completely better than any movie could be. Dune 2021 had no reason to be remade for the fans. The director likes making inferior versions of things, like his new blade runner.
Dune Part 2, was green lit yesterday. To be released in October 2023. Theater only, no streaming options.
Would you recommend reading book first before seeing this or will film stand on KT’s own?
Definitely read the book first
Can’t wait for the sequel
It's so beautiful I didn't want the film to end to be honest.
Same here. Will be such a wait for Part 2.
Very much agree with this review. Loved the movie. What I liked best was how textured it felt, with so many little details hinting at the wider universe or at aspects of the story outside the main narrative.
It was trash compared to the 1985 original movie.
If part two will happen, this will be the new Lord of the Rings!
The best movie I've seen in years.
Beat my all time fav...Blade Runner(Scott)
Can't wait to see this film! Unfortunately it's being delayed until Dec 2nd here in Australia!
This movie is a Masterpiece. The Mona Lisa of Film.
To put it politely ... I was totally underwhelmed by the movie. Good movie ...yes, no doubt. Best movie of the year so far ...... not by a mile. Hollywood has decided to turn this into a franchise, with a part 2 in the works already. The original stands supreme.
I disagree but you are welcome to your opinion.

The vision stuff is really repetitive and by the end of the movie you feel as if you just watched a 3 hour commercial for the sequel. LOL
The last scene is literally a one on one fight with shit choreography.
Hard disagree and to answer your question, no I don't get paid. I review films as objectively as I see them. If you didn't know, movies are subjective at the end of the day and most people have a brain to understand that...
I agree with everything. Truly breathtaking
TY, it all sounds sooo good.
Thanks for your review, you've made some very valid points, especially on how well the movie ends.
I hope they make all the original books into movies. At the very least until God Emperor
Best movie I've seen in Years unreal
I have watched dune 5 times now (once in IMAX 4 on HBO) I’m going to try seeing it in IMAX again before it is out of theaters.
Saw it on IMAX then watched it again at home. So good. Also pushing thru the book for the 1st time. This movie is a breath of fresh air compared to what studios have been giving us.
Seems like one of those movies you'll want to watch 2-3 times..
i keep going back to it
Why not 10/10? What are the cons for you?
I barely have ever given anything a 10. There are slight flaws that would really only seem like nitpicks for me but still, my highest rated film of all time is probably a 9.5 so a 9.25 is what I consider to be extremely high. But rating aside I loved it
Best film in many many years.
Gurney (JB) shouting about the Harks
is not engaging, and then both of them dies...(actually all three. Well Duncan "0" does). More Paul and Bene Gesserit.
As a super fan ...yes loved it.
Go IMAX do it. Otherwise its like not seeing Avatar in 3d
I have seen the movie weeks ago in germany! 10/10
Yes I know. I’m speaking in regards to scale and the ending in general I think in this video.
I was with you until you referenced Interstellar. One of the worst movies of all time. So I am not sure if Dune is for me.
Very good film, definitely worth the wait. I think I need a second viewing to solidify my thoughts, but I was very impressed.
Oscars? I don't think WOKE HOLLYWOOD would understand this movie at all.
