  • When Stuart Adamson first got together with Bruce Watson and started writing songs in May and June of 1981, a room in the Townhill Community Centre in Dunfermline was used as a makeshift studio. There as just a duo and armed with guitars, a drum machine, keyboard and a Tascam 4 track portastudio, they wrote and recorded the first 9 songs that would set the foundation of the new collaboration that would come be known as Big Country.
Harvest Home, Heart and Soul, Angle Park, Wake, Lost Patrol, We Could Laugh, Echoes, The Crossing and Inwards were those first 9 songs written and recorded.
Officially, only Harvest Home, Angle Park and We Could Laugh have been released. (The Crossing 30th Anniversary Deluxe CD)
The full version of We Could Laugh: • Big Country - We Could... )
The Lost Patrol: • Big Country - The Lost...
This is an instrumental that would go on to become the song 'Echoes' from those recordings. It seems experimentation was very much the order of the day and Stuart and Bruce played around with guitars, keyboards and sounds as they started to forge a path forward, finding what would work for them and what could be left behind. Echoes would never go on to be released in any official format, although a later version with lyrics and vocals was also recorded and included on Rarities IV in 2003.

What a dynamic duo. So glad Bruce is doing new stuff these days (WKW) but I'm sure he misses working with Stuart though.

I really like Echoes. I had never heard it until Svein and Tom played an early live version in their podcast. This version is great. ❤️

Dark, mystic and beautiful. It’s interesting how this band developed from 1981 to 2000. every record has a different style but I love them all.
Great Video picture too, btw. 🙂

So good to hear this gives a real insight into what BC would emerge into.

Wow! I'm hearing sort of a proto-"All of Us". In fact you can play both songs at the same time and the tempo, beat & even some of the riffs line up 😲

Deffo all of us in there somewhere didn’t know they were using so much synth back then maybe introduced thru skids songs Stuart had written the music too ???

@@robertclayton6289 ikr?? In some interview, I forgot where, Stuart talks about early songwriting sessions where they had a cheap synth set up on an ironing board 🤣 Ultimately they dumped the synth and instead got creative with guitar sounds to fill that slot. (A brilliant move!) But I think you're right, these early demos are the missing link between the Skids and the very different BC sound we all love

@@ZeroChannelZero Thank so very much for replying to me Sir/Madam Totally agree with all what you say and especially the last few lines about the missing link not sure how much input Richard,William and Rusty had on the actual music writing of the songs on D I E and T A G but loads of synth used on those two Lp’s...not so much if any on S T D really interesting you finding those very early recordings I didn’t even know Stuart and Bruce were already building BC songs in 81’82. I guess so tho from BC hitting the scene around feb/mar 83 ??? Pls correct me if I’m wrong with the dates there. Harvest Home was the first single released....was it not ??? around the spring of 1983 ??? Love the stories of Bill Nelson’s input too with Peaceful Times....Animation backwards Love Peaceful Times you can almost hear Jamaican steel drums in there but it must be Stuart’s guitar such a clever idea from Bill Maybe not the first person to do/record like this but a dam fine idea for that song and time in musical history and the lyrics are so obscure....just class Richard penned some truly wonderful lyrics in many songs...as a band they just all gelled so well but could only have a very short shelf life before their paths would split and divide Mick Glossop was a fine choice too for T A G the band were as one with their producers at this time and the same would continue with Steve Lillywhite I feel just like the skids and BC these three producers would never get the acclaim, notoriety or legend status they deserved Love your story about the synth on the ironing board lol....those were the days eh😊. Stuart’s credited with most of if not all on the three skids Lp’s I refer too for synthesizers they were used a lot back then in new wave bands Midge Ure Ultravox for example and of coarse not forgetting Mr Gary Newman Lovely chatting with you 😊. Will keep my eyes out for more gems on your channel😉. Stay Safe x

Big country could have released The Crossing as a double album like London calling. Too many bsides etc left out that could be stand out lp tracks.
