I absolutely love toned grey paper!! White looks super white black looks super black. When doing value studies it is great. Loved toned tan also like for gouache. Just makes the colors pop.

I agree, I've used toned tan with gouache a few times before and I love how it looks! I'm really excited to try the grey! 😊

As soon as you said pencil crayons I suspected that you were a fellow Canadian. If you are looking for the Strathmore watercolour journals they’re usually in stock at Aboveground Art supplies in Toronto. You can checkout their website if your not in the Toronto area. I confess that once I learned about Jackson’s in 2020. I now order 95% of my supplies to them. The remainder is from Aboveground art supplies. I love the Escoda Versatil line for my regular and travel brushes. For the past two years, Jackson’s has had a big watercolour sale in April and that has been when I picked up my travel brushes. Check out the black and red Escoda sets for a nice variety. I am really hoping Jackson’s has the sale again this year. I l enjoyed watching this haul with a nice variety of items.

Thanks for the tip! I believe I'm subscribed to the Aboveground Art email list, but I haven't been to check out the store yet. I'm a few hours outside Toronto, so I do mostly order supplies online if I'm not able to get them at my local store. Jackson's is so great though, the selection is so nice! I'll keep an eye out for the sale, I would love to try out the Versatil brushes, they sound nice! I'll look into the black and red sets also, I don't think I've come across them before. I'm glad you enjoyed the video, it's always fun to see what other artists are buying! ☺️

You can get the Fluid 100 paper from Deserres. I bought them in different size blocks and different paper weights. I should have looked into that S&B Nova Trio when Jackson’s had their paper same. I put it on my wish list for the next time. Gorgeous haul! Keep creating! 💙💜💛

Ooo, thanks so much for the tip! 💕 I've been ordering from Jackson's a lot but I definitely need to check out Deserres supplies. I'm so excited to dig into the Nova toned book, I'm saving that as an art treat for myself for when I return. 😊

Ha! Sarah should get a commission… during Black Friday sales, I ordered the portable painter micro and the regular size based on Sarah having them in her favourites list. I also ordered a couple of Stillman & Birn sketchbooks to try and the small shire set after watching them on her channel. Those were all 2022 purchases though. I was lead astray by FAR too many UA-cam artists last year and have been on the low-buy/no-buy train in 2023 😂. I think I bought some neocolour IIs after seeing you use them lol. I’m also in Canada and we have had the pencil-crayon / coloured pencil debate on many occasions in my office. Seems that it depends on the part of Canada you’re from whether you call them one or the other.
Hope you have a great trip and all your travel supplies work well for you!

Thank you so much FaithAnn - I'm really looking forward to the break. 😎 I agree with your point about Sarah, haha her recommendations are the best! Now that I've bought the Shire Blue I'm wishing I had've got the full set, I didn't realize at the time it was one of five. Have you tried the Portable Painter palettes yet? Do you like them? I try to be minimal with my supplies and only buy things I know I'll use but it's so hard sometimes when you see something new! ☺️ It's so funny about the pencil crayon term, I didn't realize no one called them that until I had a comment on a video once. hehe. 🙈

@@LeanneLandArt I have not filled my portable painter palettes yet! It’s such a big commitment to choose colours and be stuck with them, since I don’t have a ton of replacement pans 😂. By the time they reached me after Black Friday, it was December, so I’ve been hanging onto them for a couple of months now and I’m thinking at this point I’ll wait until we have plans to travel somewhere in the spring/summer. By then I might know what colours I want. I also bought the new pan sizes so I can bring a few more colours along with me, rather than being limited to 6.
Good for you for trying the “minimal supply” approach. I’m trying to be more intentional with future supply purchases as well. Last year watercolour was a new medium for me, so I was stocking up on ALL the things… but now I’m well stocked and I really know my “favourites”. After my no/low buy year is done, I don’t want to go wild with frivolous purchases and just replenish favourites.

After using the palette for a bit I’m really regretting that I didn’t add Paynes Grey. 🙈 I think that’s one thing I’d change about the colours I picked. I really do love how light it is though and I’ve found the mixing space has been more than enough for what I need. Overall it’s been really nice to travel with! 😊

@@LeanneLandArt Is it wrong that I want to go on a trip for the sole purpose of getting a travel painting setup ready? 😂
I rely on payne’s grey a lot too. It’s so hard to narrow down “must have” colours. I know I can mix (and do), but convenience colours are just fun/easy to use.

Love the video, love the sketches and you're absolutely 100% correct. It's more important to sketch, even if it doesn't work out great than it is to have a great result that's 90% happy accident.
The only thing I get behind is.... drum roll.... the Lamy fountain pen. They are for kindergarteners; Hence, the forced grip. I don't know why north Americans, which includes Canada, are so crazy about lamy, but I'm going to take a leap and make the assumption it has a great deal to do with UA-cam and the whole monkey see monkey do mere exposure effect. They are horrible fountain pens and extremely over priced in North America. They are only pennies.

    • @LeanneLandArt
      @LeanneLandArt  Рік тому

Thank you for the kind feedback! Do you have a fountain pen you prefer that you find works well? I’ve been using the Faber-Castell fine liners while on vacation and I’ve really enjoyed them! I’m always up for trying new art supplies! 😊🖋️

@@LeanneLandArt I use rapidographs as liners because they aren't disposable and I get to change ink colors and nib size.
Believe it or not, my favorite fountain pen right now, all my top 5 favorites, are jinhao. They've replaced even Mont Blanc in my book. I'll probably never spend more than $5.00 on a fountain pen again. My favorites before I found jinhao were Pelikan, Mont Blanc and omas. I always went vintage when possible, but now I'll never buy a modern fountain pen again other than jinhao. They've even surpluses Pelikan in my book. But you won't hear that from a UA-camr. I won't say it on my UA-cam channel either, but it's true. Right now I'm in love with the 8802, the 500 and a piston filler which mimics the $90.00 twsbi diamond 580 that I paid $1.95 for. I've had it for 5 years now and it's remained in my top 5 all this time. My twsbi cracked after 6 months. Honestly, you do you and what you enjoy. It's all about what brings you joy. If you like lamy, jam on madam.
People who do not collect and or use fountain pens can't tell the difference and those whom do won't buy your expensive pens because they already have them. So you do what brings you joy. Not that you needed my permission but you know what I mean lol

    • @LeanneLandArt

Ahh, that’s interesting. I had a set of rapidographs that I used in college. Unfortunately younger student me didn’t take very good care of them and they gummed up. We had to put India ink in them for class which was terrible because I was bad about cleaning them. 🙈 I’ll definitely check out the Jinhao pens though, they sound interesting! I haven’t used too many different fountain pens for sketching, I did have a Pilot pen but I always found I got ink all over my hand. Thanks for the info! 😎
