This movie is also factual as you can look up the women on the internet. American history was written by whites and doesn’t show the importance of other races. For instance, Thomas Edison didn’t create electric light. Sir Humphrey Davy did. Thomas Edison just made it dimmer and took credit for it. You can’t trust every thing you read.

Bryan Ryan dude? Did you even watch the scene? She wasn’t allowed to use the bathroom, it was a only “white exclusively” bathroom.
I wouldn’t say smartest, they were all experts in their field, she didn’t know much about aeronautical Engineering, or electrical engineering or how the chemistry behind the rocket fuel worked but a lot of those guys did, her role there was a calculator mathematician meaning she could solve any problem evolving numbers, everyone in that room was a master at their specific field, to say she was the smartest one in that room implies that she was a “jack of all traits” which is not true everyone in that building was important, from the scientist to the engineers, getting a pilot to space was a team effort in which every single soul was absolutely important, the smartest minds America could find let to a man in space and eventually on the moon.
She was abnormally smart in Mathematics, most likely better then everyone in that building at math but I wouldn’t say she was the smartest one there
This was the last movie my friend and I went to see before she died. I remember thinking "what is she doing?" as she was running in the rain. My friend who was black knew exactly what was happening as it was happening. Both of us born in 1954. She was from Alabama and I am from Georgia. I remember colored toilets and water fountains but it didn't affect me like it did her. I learned a lot about the black culture from her because she talked frankly and didn't wear her feelings on her sleeves. She was an awesome person and every time I see clips from this movie I think of her.

When I saw in old movies the white/colored drinking fountains I thought that was a needless expense. But this was bad. And I am disappointed this clip doesn't have the followup scene of big boss taking sledgehammer to sign, as it should be. Brown vs. Board of Education was settled correctly; separate but equal is not a thing that exists in the real world.

It was well scripted. It would take a minute to parse and a few more to come up with the solution. It worked well. It should have been her supervisor fixing it.

It’s so realistic, she has emotions as she is human, but she also knows she’s in a work place where her superior is in front of her and can possibly fire her if she went to far.
This scene has always stood out as one of the most powerful of the movie. I felt her pain of being disrespected, being disregarded, and of just simply being treated as less than. Taraji did an amazing job.
I love the part where she looks at her colleagues while he questions her. Not only did she have to go through that journey to the bathroom everyday, she also gets reprimanded in front of her colleagues. All that and more combines to set her off.

Great scene. Segregation was some sick shit. Just to think that white people thought they were inherently superior to others makes me want to vomit. I have read some great books about African-Americans and the struggles they had to go through. I, highly, recommend Black Like Me, Malcolm X, and The Color of Water amongst others, and one my very favorites To Kill A Mockingbird.

I started the applause in the theater when this film finished. It was perfection. I don't think I've ever seen any film or TV show where Taraji P Henson's character wasn't my favorite. She kills every single role she has. And the cinematography in this scene alone is perfection. Not one facial expression was missed during the slow pans and cuts after her speech was finished.

Kenneth Williams unfortunately, it comes down to promoting yourself and sucking up to voters to get the nomination, which Taraji didn't do (and which I respect)...to me, Taraji was wayyyy better than Emma Stone that year, but that's the name of the game...they don't care about talent, just what's in it for them...but that's okay, we all know she would have won 🙂
This scene simultaneously makes me want to cheer in support of her, scream in frustration for what she and her community experienced, and applaud the actress all at once. The build-up in her voice - in intensity, and volume - from the moment when she starts explaining about the bathroom, up to the moment she bellows about the coffee - incredible. It's like she's held it all in for her whole time at NASA (or more likely her entire life) and she gives herself 30 seconds to finally let it all out. And then the shaking in her voice even once she dials it back down, like you can tell she's still barely holding it together. I have no idea how she didn't get nominated for this role.

I loved how they showed him having genuine surprise at this. It's really easy as a white man to not see sexism or racism as most people are pretty unobservant unless it's something that impacts their day to day life. And that doesn't mean you are sexist or racist, it just means you are too focused on your own life to look around and notice it happening. Once he finds out he immediately fixes it, so he's clearly not racist but he was just focused on his job and just overlooked the problem like it's so easy to do.
I mean he definitely notices her skin color, but he gives her a shot, he lets her do the math and he gives her a place in the meeting, and comes to rely on her. He dismantles Nasa's racist bathrooms he might not be perfect, but for his time he was definitely not racist like Jim Parson's character was.
I like this comment it's a good analysis. These days when black ppl try to point out the advantages white ppl have in America we have a good amount of ppl that still get offended, feel targeted, or think we're complaining rather then saying "wow I didn't notice that before, thanks for showing me your perspective. Which part never happened? It's based on a true story, obviously some things are different but this scene rings pretty true for the time, although I can't say I'm sure of its veracity.

So, even if Ms Johnson didn't experience this, you can be sure that some other woman or person of color in that era did -- whether it was at NASA or a manufacturing plant in Indiana. That's why films like this are made. Not just to convey the literal facts of what happened, but the truths behind them as well.

And ended up hating, discriminating and making slaves out of such human beings who are just like all of us, except that they are different (which everyone today is; everybody is different and unique in their own way and we all have the right to be who and how we are)
and difference I believe is the contributing factor to what caused such unequal treatment and segregation that’s been placed upon these poor souls since the dawn of time, and a lot of people from the past who have suffered from this have ended up being buried in it, and their descendants today might not suffer just as much, but should never have to suffer from it again for as long as the human age continues until it ends.
Our Humanity is very fragile and can easily be broken by even the slightest occurrence, which should never be the case, I hope for people of all shapes and sizes ever again.

Don't get it twisted, a lot of historical movies don't use every scene back then because they change things for ratings and to make it more interesting, however, just because every single thing isn't used the idea is to use true events.
Colored bathrooms may ring a bell, but based on Katherine's own testimony, she never used a colored bathroom at NASA, but instead used the same bathroom as the other employees from her first day. She was only challenged on it once about three years after she had been working there by a white women, but nothing ever came of it. Whether she 'got away with it' because no one cared, or because the real Katherine was (and is) so fair skinned that she passed as white to her colleagues, I don't think anyone knows.
Besides that, by the point in the timeline of the movie, there were no colored bathrooms at NASA. NASA had integrated its restrooms about 10 years before the events supposedly portrayed by the movie.

@@akhtar7574 Prior to 1964, it was against the law in most of the US for a person of color to use certain facilities. Restrooms, drinking fountains, chairs in restaurants etc. I personally never saw such stuff in real life but it was real. Google it.
