  • Translation: Down there where shades more deep are glooming, What travelers that, alone, astray? Around him flame bright eyes, dark depths illuming, but on he journeys as by chance, on the way! The wolves in their wild joy are howling. As if for their pray they were prowling; The young girl foward runs, and doth their fury dare. A ring in her grasp she holds tightly, whence tinkles a bell, slightly sharply, lightly, a bell that tinkles lightly, that charmers wear.
Stands she dazed, flushed and glowing, more handsome than the rajahs, he! Yet with a blush, he'll learn his life he's owing to the pariah's fair progeny, but he, in a dream her enfolding, till to heaven she soars in his holding, to her he says, "your mead is won" it was Vishnu, great Brahma's son! And since the day in that dark wood, the traveler hears where Vishnu stood, the sound of a little bell ringing, the legend back to him bringing, a small bell ringing like those the charmers wear. EP

    Wonderful recording.
What I like about this piece (Mozart's Queen of the Night aria too) is that they're both very virtuosic pieces, but not at the expense of the beauty of the music.

If this was originally recorded in 1977, Elizabeth was only 25 or 26 at the time! Brilliant job! Thanks for posting these treasures! So good to hear her extraordinary artistry again.

her voice is just beyond glorious... you have to have these pure tones to sing like this... so many sopranos now a days have a nasty edge and ugly, squeaky high notes...

I found this recording on an open reel tape in our father's house. I believe the speaker is a radio commentator. In the context of the recording with a number of other singers it was the only way to identify the performer to radio listeners. A situation like this is part of the singer's journey through her career.

Yes, this is from a radio broadcast and that was the announcer. I was listening that day and, during the intermission, my ex and I got on the subway downtown to Jordan Hall to see the 2nd half in person.

I find it very weird that hundrets of thousands watched dessay or sumi jo singing this, but only few people watch this. I mean, HER rendition is by far the best I've ever heard. it tops dessay or any other in all aspects.

Formidable performance, in every nuance, so near to the score... much better than many so-called Opera primadonnas. Noticed how she spells "...à la nuit" hiting the highest keys !
There is just a fistful stars able to do that !
All others can only mumble "aaah" at this height. Sure that Delibes would have unreplying give her the part if he was still alive.

Much better than either Callas or Sutherland, to me. Callas' voice always sounded hooty to me. Sutherland sang this as if she were wading in molassas. This is much closer to the Lily Pons version. Anyway, superb!

    • @bathie2636
      @bathie2636 6 років тому +1

Larry Gott You know, for me: Lily Pons’s version, and E. Parcells’s version are not just superb, they are the greatest so far!.... *Definitely the best of all the best* she done it with just a piano 👏🏻🎹👏🏻*Amazing*

    • @Feisenbach
      @Feisenbach 4 роки тому +1

And Sutherland (of course!) sang it in a lower key. Transposition really was her specialty.

  • @Feisenbach
    @Feisenbach 13 років тому

@johndavidryan You are simply wrong. :-) This aria is written in E major. Sutherland sings it in E flat major, but no one has transposed it up to G major. I guess that would be quite a challenge!

I find it weird as well, but I think a lot of it is due to how much marketing you get and how much hype you're surrounded by. Also, as our opera houses get bigger and bigger and as our orchestras get bigger and bigger, voices like Dessay's are considered tiny. People tend to like bigger and less subtle voices now, I think. Histrionics seems to make it more than subtlety. Smaller and more subtle voices like Ms. Parcells's seem to be amateur at best if not donwright childish or sily.

As tough as they are however, they aren't the hardest coloratura arias out there!

    Ou va la jeune Indoue,
    Filles des Parias,
    Quand la lune se joue,
    Dans le grand mimosas?
    Dans le grand mimosas?
    Elle court sur la mousse
    Et ne se souvient pas
    Que partout on repousse
    L'enfant des Parias,
    L'enfant des Parias.
    Le long des lauriers roses,
    Revant de douce choses, Ah!
    Elle passe sans bruit
    Et riant a la nuit.
Labas dans la foret plus sombre,
    Quel est ce voyageur perdu?
    Autour de lui
    Des yeux brillent dans l'ombre,
Il marche encore au hasard, e perdu!
    Les fauves rugissent de joie,
Ils vont se jeter sur leur proie,
    Le jeune fille accourt
    Et brave leur fureurs:
Elle a dans sa main la baguette
    ou tinte la clochette,
ou tinte la clochette des charmeurs!
    L'etranger la regarde,
    Elle reste eblouie.
Il est plus beau que les Rajahs!
Il rougira, s'il sait qu'il doit
La vie a la fille des Parias.
Mais lui, l'endormant dans un reve,
Jusque dans le ciel il l'enleve,
En lui disant: 'ta place et la!'
    C'etait Vishnu, fils de Brahma!
Depuis ce jour au fond de bois,
    Le voyageur entend parfois
Le bruit leger de la baguette
    ou tinte la clochette,
Ou tinte la clochette des charmeurs!

This recording is so ruined by the context and tone of that blandishing comment. I advocate omission of the wholly extraneous judge's mediocre voice.
