    I have my own story: i live in eastern europe and we call them "strigoi". In short i was on a long drive home from another county and stopped for a leak and a smoke on the road side. Took a short way back and there was only fields and forrested areas all around. Ive heard the most horrible sounds in the distance and at the forrest edge saw some glowing eyes moving around. I heard that if it sounds far its close around so I dropped everything and j turned the hell outta there. This happened a few days ago and since i still hope it was some deers during mating season

    I remember hearing these stories from when I was younger. The thing that always terrified me about Wendigos was that the "beast" that is always described isn't the Wendigo, thats the wendigo's host. The wendigo is a parasite (its a spirit that acts like a parasite rather) basically that entices people to turn to cannibalism, and IDK somehow thats more terrifying then wendigos acting on their own accord.

    I feel like there's a gross misunderstanding of what a wendigo is, why, and what they do. Being a cannibal is part of it, but there was no such thing as being a criminal cannibal, the entire story relies on looking at it from the cultural context. This was a time when the people moved during the seasons, and while the food was plentiful, there were times when a tribe would find themselves in a struggle during a winter.
    This would mean going days without food, which is a major factor in Indigenous peoples tending to be overweight, as our bodies are made for fasting, so they store calories to fat more efficiently, which is great when there's no food, but you get fat quick if there's always a lot of it (also lactose intolerance, inability to properly digest processed foods, sensitivity to sugar, especially refined). But during times of starvation, the fat could be entirely consumed on the body. In these cases, the eldest of the members of the tribe would walk off into the forests, sacrificing themselves to reduce the number of mouths to feed. If it went further than that, the people would eat whatever they could, but one thing no one ever did was cannibalize other people to survive. Regardless of your opinion on it, that was considered absolutely unacceptable, like unforgiveable.
    Anyone going to the lengths of cannibalization would, at that point, be emaciated, starving, and rail thin. Their hunger is what drives them to do it. So, as punishment, the person who ate human flesh would be condemned to forever be tortured by intense and ravenous hunger, that will never be satiated, no matter how much they eat. Their bodies will lose weight, even if they eat a whole cow, and it will just make them hungrier. Their hair falls out, they become impossibly skinny, but unable to die, driven mad by the hunger that never relents.
    This is what a wendigo is. It is a very specific creature, created by a very specific act, that was actually a possibility at the time. The story is horrifying because it's meant to push the people to find any means necessary to forage for food, and to die with dignity if that's not possible, because to eat a person would only give you a half-life of eternal torture. It was seen as too great a cost and too selfish an act. Bodies were family, they were part of your tribe, you had to honour them. We feast our dead, no one could ever participate in honouring the dead if they ate an ancestor. It's unthinkable.
    So, while I enjoy scary stories, I just find the mention of this creature always ruins it for me, because they're so silly. This mimic thing, the voice throwing, crying baby sounds thing, it's dumb, that would never happen. These things are single minded and obsessed with food and ending the hunger, they wouldn't play spooky games, they're not even human anymore.
    Also, the darkness that is manifested when a wendigo is created, that darkness isn't only in that being, that darkness exists through many other spiritual ideas. We say the shamans who decide to use the medicine for their own selfish ends and hurt people tap into that same darkness. That's where bearwalkers (like skinwalkers only First Nations, same people who have the wendigo) get their powers. It's not a huge part of our culture, because those people, the ones who misuse our medicine or cannibalize people, they were always ostracized, they weren't permitted to be around hurting people and bringing bad medicine into our circles. We don't even talk about this stuff.
    Like I'm reticent to even type this, but I do get annoyed when people just pilfer our cultures and then distort pieces of us into silly magical beings and mystical Indians. This entity served its purpose in our culture, and whether you believe it's a real thing or not, it's a part of our culture. And honestly, the true story is far more fucked up than any fictional story I've ever heard.

    • @ravenashling1279
      @ravenashling1279 3 роки тому +18

      Thanks for clearing this up for me. I always feel like I'm walking in a grey area when talking about these things because I don't want to misconstrue anything or participate in cultural appropriation.

    • @jademoon7938
      @jademoon7938 3 роки тому +15

      @@ravenashling1279 We don't have any issue with people learning about our cultures, we actually really appreciate it, and enjoy talking about it, after it was illegal for so long. We don't like talking about dark things because they can inadvertently call things to you. I'm not talking about horror fiction or anything like that.
      The things that I, and many others - though I don't speak for everyone - take issue with are really just two main things; people who don't even respect us as people appropriating our culture and people making shit up and attributing it to us.
      The former is a struggle for all people from oppressed and marginalized groups, it's bad enough when people are racist and cruel, but to then take things from us because they're pretty and totally divorce them from their true meaning and purpose, basically repurposing our culture and acting like it's theirs, is a slap in the face. This is what most people mean they say "cultural appropriation" because it's not always about the object, it's about how they treat the people who created that object.
      If people were willing to learn about cultures and appreciate what the things they like are, and see how the people feel about others using it, there wouldn't be a problem. That's "cultural appreciation".
      The latter issue (the making shit up) is a major problem for Indigenous people because nearly everything anyone thinks they know about us is made up bullshit. Magical Indians with our mystical ways that curse lands for millenniums and our burial grounds will cause spirits to rise and torment anyone who dares build on them. The "Indian costumes" racist people wear. Disney's Pocahontas (which only made the magical Indian thing worse). The fetishization of beautiful Indigenous women and good looking guys. Dancing around fires in loincloths. It's all fucking bullshit lol.
      There are hundreds of Indigenous tribes in Canada alone, every tribe has a unique culture and language with many dialects, art forms, regalia, foods, and it's all beautiful. Really, I'm not just saying that, it genuinely is. And it would be absolutely fantastic if people would stop being racist and actually learn about our cultures, and stop participating in the perpetuation of bullshit and lies.
      It's all online somewhere. My tribe's language, Ojibwe, has multiple translation dictionaries online. And no matter where you live in the US or Canada, there are gatherings every year, in every community. Pow wows in summer. Everyone is welcome to those. There's always amazing shopping areas with anything Indigenous you can think of, tons of food, it's fun. I think more people should go. Only rules are no alcohol or drugs and no pets. You should check one out sometime.

The 10th largest state by area, it is also the least populous and second most sparsely populated state in the country. I got that from Wikipedia.

    To the person questioning their sanity, you aren’t crazy. You aren’t alone. These “things” want to isolate you and to make you feel crazy or alone, and society at large would also question your sanity ajd say you are crazy or imagining things. You aren’t. There really are things in the woods beyond animals and plant life. Don’t forget to pray. If you don’t pray, start. The Bible talks about those killed by the “terrible things.” That was all the confirmation I needed. Best wishes. Most people don’t believe in stuff like this but that is only because they never learned about it in school.

    I'm part of the Native community, but Im not super in touch with my roots and don't know much about them. I love watching videos about Wendigos and Skinwalkers, and there have even been supposed skinwalker sighting and experiences just a couple towns away from me. The Navajo didn't have any reservations in Oklahoma, the state I live, but apparently there have been dog man sightings, Bigfoot sighting in the mountains, a large octopus in one of the lakes, etc. I've also been reading up on reddit, and there have been multiple skinwalker and wendigo sightings and experiences in Oklahoma. Although is does amaze me how many people in Oklahoma hate the Natives. One person even commented on how Oklahoma is a shit place because this is where the "Indians" were all sent to die
