  • We really needed a solid digital console with a small footprint for smaller corporate jobs, when our Yamaha CL5 would be overkill. You'd think M32r, or an X32 right? While we have carried those consoles before, Kay decided to stick with his favorite company. Today we unbox, set up, and give our opinions on the Yamaha TF1 digital console. #soundshopvlogs #unboxing #yamahaTF1 #audioengineer #yamahamotorcycles
    Today's a long one, at least by our standards, so here ya go....
    0:00 - Vintage intro/Ted Intro
    0:51 - Console Unboxing/Kay's explanation
    3:47 - Unboxing Dante Card
    5:14 - Yamaha VS Digico scenarios/Missing studio monitors
    7:51 - Grunie Yamaha jokes/Kay reacts
    9:23 - Setting up console/Troubleshooting Dante
    13:20 - A simple console/Kay's initial first take
    16:30 - Kay's second take/Why he chose this over M32R

    The older I get, the longer I’m in the industry, the more I sound like and relate to Kay.

    Ok, this is gonna be long but I'm gonna give my 2 cents and hopefully I can get my point through. As it most often happens I'm agreeing with Kay. The X/M32 world is compact, and as Grunie says it's a board that everyone knows how to use. At the same time it's worse sounding and customer support with Music Tribe or however they're called today - they change name and websites every sundown - is terrible. I have an X32 and an xr18 and I pray to God I NEVER have to reach out. Now for that money I feel like I would have probably gone the SQ route too. More channels, more flexibility on inputs, Dante and, in my opinion, a better all-round console. But as it often happens I am one of those engineers who owns his gear and who is always thinking as closely as possible as how big companies do.
    I too would have gone Yamaha. Without a doubt. TF1 would have been my choice for small things where I need talking heads, I don't know if I would have gone QL1 though. I feel like CL1 would be a better investment if someone needs to spend the extra cash. Knowing you guys already have RIO boxes there's already inventory to run a show, and the possibility now of getting a TIO box makes it quick and easy to use and deploy. It's idiot proof with their "one knob preset" thing that they do (the slider on top, the one that sets the eq or gate or compression according to the type of channel you give him) and it does the job. I've mixed on TF on multiple occasions, it's not my favourite, but it just works. Touchscreen, stay in channel view, click on what you need, easy interface. IT JUST WORKS. That is the only point to this discussion. I love A&H, I have an SQ5 myself. Is it worth it buying an SQ5 for more money, investing 2k more on stageboxes and case? Or is it easier to get a TF1 and use the RIOs you guys have already? You already have Yamaha, why change brand. Most of the companies that are still working well only have two or three types of consoles. I used to work for a company that still to this day only has X/M32 compacts for small things, a couple SQ5 for slightly bigger jobs and a couple of dLives for big jobs. And 70% of their jobs are corporate. They're still doing just fine now. They know their gear and even if yes, Digico is a must or Yamaha is what people know they just don't need to get out of their brands for a single client. You guys are doing the right move. CL5 for big shows and TF1 for simple stuff. You got the Digico, you got the Behringer. It works and you don't need to invest in a whole new ecosystem.
    As I stated at the beginning of my "rant", I agree with Kay 100%. I'd buy a 16channel TIO though for when someone wants the console and not your engineer. You never know.

    I like my TF1. Dante on it will control pre amps unlike the M32 on Dante. Stereo ins can be delayed by frame rate for video. Also can directly control DZR speakers and Shure ULX-D wireless. To my ears the TF sounds better than the M32. TF also has more busses. I have both M32 and TF.

    Absolutely the right brand for the use case. Yamaha rules when it comes to corporate. I'm an A&H guy so yeah SQ would have been an option for me but the guy signing the cheques will see Yamaha and be happy. Maybe a QL1 would have been better but for real basic corporate work I think you've picked the right price/performance point. Totally with you on the X/M32, reliability has to be top priority. I know they're top for bang per buck but if it feeks up on you just once at a high profile corporate the damage to your reputation is way more than the cash you saved going BearRinger. I also agree with Kay on the "sometimes simple is best", even Steve can work it ;-D (where's the ROFL emoji?)

    Quick question... would an m32 with a dante card been an option maybe?... one thing about the Yamaha desk, it will probably turn on every time, thats a Yamaha thing. I’m surprised it took K longer than once with the x/m32 snake “pop”... it was only once for me, and never again. Always copper with them now.

    • @dustinthiessen
      @dustinthiessen 3 роки тому

      M32 w/ Dante you wouldn't have preamp control of the RIO

    • @Heywoodj1969
      @Heywoodj1969 3 роки тому

      @@dustinthiessen would there be at least digital trim, or is it completely at “zero”. Ive never used dante. could connect to rio via a pc and dial in gains, since it would not be many channels?

    • @dustinthiessen
      @dustinthiessen 3 роки тому

      @@Heywoodj1969 yeah, you’d have a trim. I’m not totally sure what Yamaha have for remote software on the rio, but yeah you might be able to control the pre’s on a laptop. That’s not really a viable solution for me though, especially in a run ‘n gun kinda situation where you gotta work fast.

    • @Heywoodj1969
      @Heywoodj1969 3 роки тому +1

      @@dustinthiessen so, not saying i’d do a band that way at all. But setting up a couple talking head mics wouldn’t be too hard. Also what is the point of having a console that speaks dante, if mic pre control is “still a thing”. I thought the point of dante is it just spits out the signal and the onboard pres of the console do the work.

    • @dustinthiessen
      @dustinthiessen 3 роки тому

      @@Heywoodj1969 it’s not a problem if you’re using a Dante stage box with the same manufacturer’s console. However say you had a Rio box on stage, a CL on monitors, you could send Dante to any other manufacturer’s console with a Dante card at FOH or broadcast or something. Also good for PA drive, or just general distribution around a building. Most higher end RF systems have Dante outs as well. Then of course you can use it for multi track recording/virtual sound check. Lots of uses besides preamp control.

    I personally would go with a Allen and Heath sq honestly the tf series sounds better than the x32 but I would still go with the sq over the m32r and tf, grunie complains so much about Allen and Heath products because he isn’t to familiar with the consoles but trust me once you learn how to use it the sq 5 it will be a godly console for the price

    Timing the setup of a new piece of gear is a high level of stupidity. Every piece of gear has a different feel and work flow so it will take time to learn and get accustom to using. The boss correct using a yamaha board . That is why he is the BOSS and the others are staff. Who cares that pay the bills I mean the audience about 96khz. The Hell!!. Only incompetent people will get into all the technical stuff to cover for their lack of skills.
