I could watch Richie all day talking about music. So knowledgeable and he just loves what he's doing. Would be awesome to see him talking about production.
Growing up in Detroit I feel lucky to catch Richie early in his career and watch how far he’s come. One thing I can say is he has always been pushing the technology and he’s been thinking about how to play this way even when no would ever think about not using turntables!!!!!
I can't hank you enough for sharing this vid. I have been following him since his Plastikman days, and has inspired my mixing as well as my technical prowess. Again, thanks for sharing a wonderful talk with a great musician.
That's the most German sounding I've heard Richie talk, his time in Berlin is certainly starting to show ! Great talk, love his insight into live performance....
100% MUSICIAN to me!!! Following him for about 25 years now. Plastikman and everything. Looking at the DJ Mag top 100 list is such a JOKE. DJ's like Richie are the true DJ's. Fuck those commercial top 40 USB crap DJ's... To all youngsters out there... watch and learn!
saw him in latre 90s when edinburgh's The Pure club would do glasgow barrowlands ballroom, under his Plastickman name. derek may, jeff mills. what a night
Didn't know about Duet Display... I tried the same thing with "Splashtop Extended Wireless Display", which does work, but barely... Good to know! I don't like that you have to connect it via USB, though... The whole beauty of it would be a wireless connection... Especially since the USB port of the iPad (3) sucks so much, the cable just constantly gets disconnected...
all the syncing can be a drag though and time killer. i got my maschine studio synced up and controlled through ableton and it can get frustrating. when its working perfect though i can groove out!
I also try to use Traktor and Ableton together. On 11:50 he shows both programs, and is talking about how he doesn't sync the two programs together. On this screen i see he has both programs locked on 126bmp. Even when i do sync the two programs together it only changes the BPM on both programs. That still doesn't mean that the beat is synced, because i can temporarily slow down the Traktor track, In this case the speed of both tracks is still the same, but the beat is isn't on the same time. So how does this limit me?
my issue with this kind of setup is connecting all that exchange midi data, he has 4 controllers hooked up to his computer!! I have a good mac book pro but I don't think it would allow me this...any idea anyone?
Ming Sin Ho There are also some other brands which do similar but different things. For example there is the ButtKicker stuff which is intended for more permanent installations. But you can put one on your couch and have it shake the whole thing if you get the correct setup. Or the gamer model will just shake your office chair etc.
oll school... Paul Brener. And new future?? Piano, solista, Lutier#todo visto por el momento. Ableton / Traktor / Serator#seguir igual day to day#mentor#mentores#mentiras#cursos#money...Deception. Culture Club!
Stoward Hearn I doubt he has one , after all he charges an arm and a leg to gig and flys by private jet , I think he also has something to do with native instruments who also have shares in beat port , that was set up by john aquaviva his partner in plus 8 records
that side forehead vein shows the amount of wisdom that flows through his brain. I hope to have a nice forehead vein one day too.
I have a bit of that going on, and no you do not want it. Weird comment btw.

Rob Pwr Maybe one day soon ;-)
Those 30 minute drops, bringing back the lost bass! Nothing like it. No one does it better than Richie!

So much passion behind these words. I was lucky to see Richie Hawtin at Printworks!!
Keep coming back to this. So much knowledge in here.
Absolutely fascinating listening to him talk. So much knowledge and passion

Absolutely phenomenal and inspiring. Thank you Richie Hawtin and Point Blank Music School for putting this on.
Really really nice and inspiring and recognizable words and explanation. Thanks!
Estroe Roozendaal Glad you enjoyed it Estroe!
Estroe ha ha. Die ken ik. She is a great Dutch DJ
i like what he did at 15:04. He put his computer screen down so the people in the audience could see him talk. Top bloke.
I would like to see more of this on youtube. I always like to hear Mr. Hawtin talking about music. Great lecture.

Well said my friend!
The one and only pioneer in Electronic Music in the forefront nowadays.
brilliant guy, very spontaneous and talented. Saying it like it is! You can really tell he loves what he does.
He is outstanding. From my mind to yours is an absolut brillant album.
Great stuff... Thanks for posting!
Absolutely amazing! most deserving of the term masterclass.
He held back sooooooo much
I wish more DJ/producers would do a 'brain dump' like this, such useful and usable info here. Thanks PB and Mr. Hawtin.
Very nice video!
Great vid
I love Richie for me is very inspirational :)
Intresting and inspiring! Thank you Richie!

derek may, jeff mills. what a night
Love the idea of deliberately not syncing Ableton and Tracktor, so that beats can still lag and be pulled in and out of time. That's really fun!
I love that third record concept, shame I don´t get to hear it often
Still inspiring!
I'm sorry but that laptop cover is absolutely SICK. where can i get?
he can express things when i cant right.
Didn't know about Duet Display... I tried the same thing with "Splashtop Extended Wireless Display", which does work, but barely... Good to know!

@Point Blank Music School Do you remember what event processor uses?
midi solutions footswitch controller or pedal controller?
This was real!
This is brilliant you guys! Thanks a lot. .. Also he mentions "Chris" a few times. ... is he talking about Liebing?
Siddharth Mehra He is!
mega. :)
Did the "next one" (production talk) ever happen?
Loco dice uses a foot controlled expression pedal too.
my issue with this kind of setup is connecting all that exchange midi data, he has 4 controllers hooked up to his computer!! I have a good mac book pro but I don't think it would allow me this...any idea anyone?

I met u at the Soho House Berlin u little electron :D
Awesome vid! Inspiring as always Thanks Richie !
whats that plugin as well on the drum rack, says control and has a cube on it
Paul Neary i have the same question..... it looks that modifies de behaviour of the push controller
Paul Neary apparently locks the push controller on to the 808 kit loaded on a specific channel....
oticowgirl where is the plugin for this tho what company??
it looks like it was developed by minus, so maybe it is a custom work.
richie have a huge team working on things like this for him.
Paul Neary i have the same question.....
Richie is so pleasant!
Master Hawtin
'Happy Accidents' is what Carl Cox calls it.
Anyone know something more about that sub-pack? (What brand made this?)
Ming Sin Ho thesubpac.com/ I know the guys. they are from Toronto. Very cool product they make.
Ming Sin Ho SubPac is the brand! It's really fun but also really useful
Thanks! looks really fun :) So bizar that you can "hear" sub tones by feeling the vibrations! (..if that is how it works)
Ming Sin Ho There are also some other brands which do similar but different things. For example there is the ButtKicker stuff which is intended for more permanent installations. around 9:40; don't tell me he was referring to skrillex lol
I dont like computers...shhshsh
hes right....but at studio..they are very usefull....specially for midi
I order one for my Apple too from nuvango and i buy ENTER screen :)
+Electric Fish did you get the same as his?
por favor, ponganle subtitulos en español!
lo puede hacer cualquiera amigo, no hace falta que lo haga richi fiera..
how is he setup x1 to control push tempo to get that clap in time?
Paul Neary He's got some funky Ableton mapping going on. He's not sending midi clock from Traktor.
Paul Neary x1 midi mode sending midi to ableton bpm clock
+Paul Neary i guess richie mapped the x1 with abletons tempo nudge for fine tuning the tempo. its beside the tap tempo button in the left corner
Christopher Heiß It's not midi mode. It's a direct mapping. I asked him. Now he doesn't even use the x1.
About his foot-peddal. Loco Dice uses it.
Vintsent Bekaert loco dice is using an footpedal but not an midi foot pedal , locos pedal is modulating music ( efx) on the fly
+Christopher Heiß My mistake! Thx!
#musicfullness
my precioooooooosssss....
come on hobbits..
long ways to go yet..
smeagol will show the way..
Lost all respect for him after he shoved the speaker at the lady - taking a video of him.. Such a shame, especially as he's such a great musician.

Surely, he needs to compensate his mad DJ skillz with that haircut. What a humble guy lol
Are hawtin and Trump related?

Cocaine is a hell of a drug!
WHITE RABBIT i think it's called passion?
Coked!
There's only so much "Repetition" a human ear can listen to don't you think?
Richie get some sleep man
