I think things boiled over.....Chris like many of us is so fed up with this woke victim ideology that he sort of got carried away. I'm glad he said what he said even if he blundered and backed down with an apology
This was Chris Harrison’s WORST interview. He kept interrupting Rachel. He didn’t have his facts straight (saying the picture was 5 years ago) Saying that in 2018 this would’ve been okay. Making fun of the term woke. HE is obviously a big part of the problem of why the show has little to no diversity, and why they bring so many racist contestants on the show. He is enabling it.
Yes. And I was so disappointed that he felt entitled enough to interrupt her and say half the things he did. And when he said “Who am I? Who are you to tell her what she can and can’t do?”... I can’t even believe he said that as if their opinions are comparable in this situation.
Oh, he had his facts straight. His spin was deliberate: trying to make publicized and circulated photos = speculation. Pretending as if 2018 is the same as 1970s Texas (p.s. it was wrong then) or pre-Civil Rights movement (also wrong then, people of color just didn’t have a platform to be heard). Asking us to give grace and space for someone who has requested neither, but is in the meantime racking up IG followers by the week (check out @bachelordata instagram to see for yourself). In other words, he’s doing everything he can to protect Rachael’s presence just like he has for all of their problematic contestants in the past - unless they cross Chris personally. Despicable.
Holy sh*t Chris Harrison STOP minimizing BIPOC perspectives by calling us “unreasonable people” or “the woke police.” And stop cutting Rachel off!! This entire interview screams ABC protectionism of the final winner of the season.
Most people I have considered to be under the umbrella term "woke police" are super liberal white women. And this is coming from a super liberal white woman lol.
i’m so tired of seeing people justify why they used to be racist or unaware of their racially insensitive actions especially when they get upset at people holding them accountable like you should totally be allowed to decide you don’t like someone for being racist, people don’t owe that girl anything
I stopped the interview half-way through because I couldn’t believe I was listening to a media trained man say mansplain how to deal with racism to a black woman. No, just stop.

Johnny and Chris is absolutely right. It's not the point it wasn't that long ago. In 2018 we didn't have the woke where everyone is obsessed with racism and makes everything out to be racism. Ffs when will this ever stop. Obviously alot of people loved Chris because that show went to trash after he left.
Omg, is he serious with this interview. I was in a sorority from 2015-2019 and old south parties were a thing at my university. I never attended one because I knew what they stood for and as a Latina they bothered me. Every sorority women and fraternity men knew what those parties stood for, the history behind them, and the implication of attending one and they did not care. The fact that she was in college in 2018 and attended an old south party is not an excuse. His “erasing history” and “woke police” comments were disgusting. This whole segment SCREAMS trying to protect Matt’s first choice. It’s a shame that Chris Harrison didn’t take this opportunity to have a true open and honest dialogue about this topic. ABC took one step forward by highlighting the conversations in Tayshia’s season and a big step back with this interview
“I don’t know, you tell me Rachel” This show puts the weight of every single discussion about race on Rachel’s back! For ever she’s been the only black lead, and one of the most successful people from the franchise and they put sooo much on her. She doesn’t need to be asked to be at the center of all of these conversations. She isn’t the shows black spokesperson. It’s not fair to her. And luckily we have Matt now, but I highly highly doubt he will take any of that weight off her shoulders. These types of things always seem to get put on black womens shoulders.
I can guarantee you that Matt will not speak on things like this! Black women in history have always carried the burden of driving movements like these forward.
Tyler C was harder on Hannah Brown when she said the n word than Matt was so I have no faith in him to do anything other than stand by Rachel because he “knows her heart”
For real! Every single time black women are constantly put at the forefront of the race discussions, even before black men. The burden is ALWAYS on us, it's tiring and old, others need to pick up the mantel. I'm sick of the strong black woman trope.

To be honest with you I don't even think racism is a useful word, the bottom line of racism is HATE. I don't think hating someone of a different skin tone is any better or any worse than hating someone with the same skin color, hate is evil and should be left at that. That's why I think trying to call Rachael Kirkconnell a racist for attending a party is just dumb, how can one honestly come to the conclusion that Rachael hates black people because she wanted to dress up and have fun with her friends?
@@EAGLESROCK136 no actually, white people can’t experience racism. We can experience prejudice, or bias, but racism is much more potent because it involves a systemic relationship to power. Given that systemic power rests with white people and always has, white people cannot be victims of racism. There’s lots of literature out there about this that can help you understand. Also, there is a difference in hating someone of a different race (as opposed to someone of your own race), because often times people of color are hated SOLELY because of their race. Finally, I don’t think people are saying the girl hates Black people because of the dress she wore, I think they’re saying the message behind what she did is disrespectful to black people and the tragedies they went through, and that in today’s time, one should know better than to participate in an event like that.

Respectfully, he’s been working in the media for decades and he’s using the word “lens,” because he’s not speaking from his perspective. He’s speaking from a media behavioral analysis perspective. And he’s not wrong about 2018! Unfortunately, in 2018, the media would’ve brushed right over a picture of a contestant who attended a southern ignorant party. He doesn’t ever say that he agrees with the racist party. He says he doesn’t want to speak for the contestant who was at this stupid party. And Rachel Lindsay literally says that she agrees with him multiple times. He’s a middle aged man who needs to freshen up his vocab. But, again, it’s not that literal. He fails at the delivery, but he is speaking about current social behavior in the media.

Rachel Lindsay was wrong either way for asking Chris Harrison questions about Rachael Kirkconnell that he may not know the answer to. The fact that Chris is using this time to come after Rachel Lindsay in this moment tells me everything I need to know. Rachel Lindsay deserves so much better than the way this franchise has treated her.
Question: when was it ever okay to be racist? I mean what year was it ever ok!!!!?? He wanted to take up for her. However, he made it worse. Whatever her perception Right or wrong, its hurtful , they should've left it there and it's something she should never do again. He made it worse.
@PhunkyEssence umm yeah I did because I do watch the bachelor and I have always found him to be charming, reasonable and measured. His personality as a mediator between the women/men and the bachelor/bachelorette is actually an important through-line to me. Didn't realise he was one of these whites that low key think who the hell are we to ask these questions and push for accountability for past racist conduct. I am not calling for him to be cancelled - because I am not part of that culture but I think more needs to be done to be respectful of the hurt and pain that people in society have been experiencing because of racism. Only denouncing it in the most resolute and firm ways will send the right signals to our social system that this was and is no longer acceptable.
It’s especially disgusting to watch Chris Harrison talking to the 1st black lead - who also happens to be a woman - and puts Rachel Lindsey in a box by making Rachel chose between her job/career at Extra or coming off as the “angry black woman” by putting Chris Harrison in his damn place. This is micro aggression that POC have to endure when white ppl try to minimize the blatant racism. Rachel Lindsey seriously deserves a raise for her poise and professionalism - bachelor nation doesn’t deserve her.
THISSSS! She kept her composure despite being gas lighted and interrupted. She could have pulled up lawyer Rachel and eviscerated him but had to be mindful of her job at an entertainment show where i'm sure they don't encourage the discussion of serious issues.
I theorize Rachel Is the winner. This is damage control. If we already find a way to hate the winner now even before the season is over, she will have a terrible time during the post press junkets.
@@brianna677 I agree it’s absolutely ridiculous. They know where she is from is a very racist place. Obviously that didn’t mean she was racist at the time, but they could have done more background checks. I feel like they did do background checks and they knew about this, but they wanted it to cause drama during the season. But instead Rachael actually ended up winning.
What's funny is that Chris and the show doesn't even care about Rachel K. They have to protect her because Matt picks her and we have to have that fairytale ending to this season. If that wasn't the case they would of hung her butt out to dry long ago. Ugh. Why didn't they just choose Mike J. to be the bachelor! Too much drama. 🙄
He should’ve just said a Rachel is responsible for her own actions. My take on it is that it isn’t appropriate in the 70s or in 2018 to celebrate preCivil War society. What with them enslaving and murdering human beings and all.
Well he seems to have a lot of compassion and grace for one Rachel but not the same for the other Rachel He is more defensive of the one and accusatory of the other If anything he should have tried to see from both perspectives and not come across as taking sides thats my take at a minimum but there is way more wrong here
I dont think Chris said anything wrong. So sad he has been treated the way he has. People are taking this crap way to far. I want to understand but when you cant say shit without being called racist its pathetic. I think this was a descent conversation between both Rachel and Chris. Dont think either of them was out of line.
In the end when you have a conversation that is public or published you expect all kinds of reactions and opinions Everyone is different in the end He is a public persona and is aware of this, my take is some people just disagree with his comments and they voiced it hopefully in a non harmful way In the end everyone wants to feel they are being heard we just need to hear each other

Exactly! I was thinking the exact same thing about the timeline here. Is he mistakenly thinking that was 1818 or 2018, which yeah, was a hot minute ago. That was a f*cked up statement right there.
I’ve watched The Bachelor/Bachelorette franchise since the very first show. I always thought of Chris Harrison as a really classy, stand up guy. Maybe that was because for the many years this show has aired, MOST of the candidates have been White. Now that for an exceedingly short period of time, they’ve highly belatedly noticed there are people of other races in the world, and have had a millimeter of diversity in the past few seasons, maybe his true colors are starting to show through the facade. That’s one theory. It’s just a damn shame that we’re still dealing with racism in 2021. Newsflash: People that are not White aren’t going anywhere. Why should they? We ALL are here because the God who created every single one of us makes no mistakes. Regardless of what some people were raised to believe, no race is superior to another. Not a damn one! That was NEVER the case. Racism is a wasteful, unnecessary practice that shortens an already short time any of us has on this Earth. It’s counterproductive, it’s wrong, it can be dangerous, and as far as a country, some assume needs to be made great again (wink, wink), racism denies us all a reality of what our country and the world COULD be if we weren’t wasting precious life trying to deny folks the full extent of their inalienable rights, by virtue of God, not man, for stupid crap.
“Is it a good look in 2018 or is it a bad look in 2021” he’s acting as if racism was only discovered in 2020 and were only now calling out people for bad behavior. ALSO those old south formals were BANNED in 2018 so to say that 50k people went to them- so it makes it okay is SO MESSED UP. #firechrisharrison
Chris Harrison is part of the problem. Rachael K needs to apologize period. And he also told Rachel L “who are you to...”. Dude is completely tone deaf. Disgusting.
As a BIPOC I have ALWAYS been expected to give grace to other people’s ignorance. I’m considered rude, angry, dangerous when people of non color say offensive & derogatory things. However, I am hardly ever given grace when I get offended for such hurtful, ignorant things. Why is it always expected that we be gracious to people’s hate?

Rachel Lindsay handled this with incredible patience. I don’t know how she did that. He just kept interrupting and spewing crap and she is trying to get through to him in a respectful way. I could not have done this. She’s awesome.
A big problem I notice is when he mentions "When [we] look at this through a different lense..", he's talking about everyone, but really POC have always seen things through the same lense. Things that aren't OK now were NOT OK then, not for POC. That just goes over his head, and he's not alone.
the thing that angered me the most is the way he said he appreciates Rachel's friendship and how he can "have these conversations" and "back and forth" with her after talking over her, dismissing her, saying "who is Rachel Lindsay?" and condescending to her for 13 minutes
I heard about this interview and after listening to it, it is so much worse than what I imagined. Like has Chris ever met with the diversity advisor they hired for the show? How is he this ignorant to dismiss such a serious topic ?
THANK YOU. My point of view. Rachel is so classy and handles herself so well. She’s a BLACK WOMAN and is telling nothing but TRUTH. Chris is so up Rachel K ass, ridiculous!!
Rachel was frothing at the mouth to throw Rachael under the bus. She first tried getting Chris H. to make a statement against her, then moves on that The Bachelor the show should, then finally that Matt the bachelor must make a statement. She is obviously angling to have them denunciate and ruin her life. Really? Over going to a certain themed party? What about this list of celebrities who have been in black face since 2000: Tom Hanks, Jon Hamm, Kylie Jenner, Jimmy Fallon, Jimmy Kimmel, etc. This list is not exhaustive and I am not calling for them to be tarnished. Just that a person like Rachael does not have the Public Relations staff celebrities have to shield them from the "Woke Police" when the social norms have changed and their past actions are now considered irredeemable.
It’s been said in other comments but want to highlight that kappa alpha order banned chapters from using “old south” in 2016. So a quick search, even in 2018, would have shown that this party was wildly inappropriate and offensive.
I graduated in 2016 before all that stuff came out so it’s hard for me not to see it as a reason to get a cool dress but I do understand that the way it’s interpreted now is obviously not that. But 2018 means she should know

I can’t even believe he said that as if their opinions are comparable in this situation.
yep
Despicable.

This show puts the weight of every single discussion about race on Rachel’s back!

The interview was initially supposed to be about the episode that aired the day before. Just because Chris Harrison was the host doesn’t mean he knows every background to every contestant on the show. This all would’ve been easier if Rachel Lindsay interviewed Rachael Kirkconnell instead!

Ok the way Chris is defending Rachel she for sure got the final rose.
Thats 100% true
I really believe that that's why he is defending her...trying to save this season...I think she won.
I was thinking the same thing.
Yes definitely possibility, that's what it looks like.
Good she deserves it
oof I thought people were being too hard on Chris Harrison but this interview went south in the first 2 minutes
How?
Same
I agree, he doesn’t deserve the way he’s been treated.
It was just a lot of yikes after more yikes
"went south" lol
If we already find a way to hate the winner now even before the season is over, she will have a terrible time during the post press junkets.
the nerve of them to let an alleged racist on the season of the first Black bachelor and then DEFEND HER like this. so disgusting.
@@eringrace4828 Totally. If random fans of the show can find this stuff, the producers are MORE than capable of finding it as well.
Spoiler but she is the winner which makes this even crazier.
The irony that Matt chose her.
Matt is crazy and confused. Don't like him
Can someone please inform me as to what chris, said wrong. I'm so confused about this uproar.
He should’ve just said a Rachel is responsible for her own actions.
My take on it is that it isn’t appropriate in the 70s or in 2018 to celebrate preCivil War society. What with them enslaving and murdering human beings and all.
Well he seems to have a lot of compassion and grace for one Rachel but not the same for the other Rachel
He is more defensive of the one and accusatory of the other
If anything he should have tried to see from both perspectives and not come across as taking sides thats my take at a minimum but there is way more wrong here
I dont think Chris said anything wrong. So sad he has been treated the way he has. People are taking this crap way to far. I want to understand but when you cant say shit without being called racist its pathetic. I think this was a descent conversation between both Rachel and Chris. Dont think either of them was out of line.
In the end when you have a conversation that is public or published you expect all kinds of reactions and opinions
Everyone is different in the end
He is a public persona and is aware of this, my take is some people just disagree with his comments and they voiced it hopefully in a non harmful way
In the end everyone wants to feel they are being heard we just need to hear each other
@@kristifranks462 you have a lot of compassion towards him. He was also showing compassion for the lady contestant.

Also, he acts like 2018 was a generation ago. It was only 3 years ago. This interview shed a new light on him and I’m very shocked and disappointed.
There’s people saying that his fraternity chapter on his campus used to host these parties when he was in college in the 80s. That same chapter got media attention for doing something racist ironically in 2019! mediaocu.com/2019/09/18/kappa-sigma-members-use-racist-team-name/
Not even 3 years if it was a Spring Jubilee or a Summer time Magnolia blossom festival. I just do declare!
*Chris sure said "woke" a great many times.* And he said it in the way all racist people say it as if NOT being asleep and happy to ignore the real world is somehow bad.
You obviously don't know what "woke" actually mean.
When he started talking about - where's the narrative of her falling for a Black man - classic argument. Hey I have BIPOC friends, I'm dating a BIPOC person. Comparing the 1970's to 3 years ago is ridiculous. She should have known enough in 2018 to know this was wrong.

They (and especially him) keep saying "2018" like that was two decades ago. MFer that was only two years ago.

As a BIPOC I have ALWAYS been expected to give grace to other people’s ignorance. I’m considered rude, angry, dangerous when people of non color say offensive & derogatory things. However, I am hardly ever given grace when I get offended for such hurtful, ignorant things.
