  • In Episode 19, we'll remove the valve cover (aka cam cover or rocker cover) to replace the leaking gasket. We'll also replace the upper timing chain guide, vacuum pump blank and clean out the PCV vent pipes while we've got the cover off the engine.

    Use zip ties for the gaskets! Super easy

    Finished! Took just about all day to dismantle, refurbish the top cover and restore everything.
    Without any oil leakage to my great surprise😂
    Please note:
    The torque momentum is 15 Nm on the T40 Torx screws and there is a specific order to tighten them. It is easily found on the internet and comes from Saab WIS. Their technical handbook.
    Without this very easy step by step video I would not have done this to our car. But I would say this is one of the best I have seen. A sort of “Mechanics for dummies”
    Just plan ahead.
    Thanks Mate!

      I might do a video on installing and using the WIS as it is a valuable resource!

      A Yank friend to told me that the 9-5:s mostly leaks from;
      • The PCV box o-ring
      • Oil pressure switch
      • Front Crank Seal
      • Oil pump o-ring
      • Valve cover gasket (check!)
      What all of this is and where they are located is a bit of a mystery to me. Vids on these topics by any chance? 😉

      @@christernorfall9229 Yeah certainly could do. I need to check them on the project 9-5 anyway. Not sure how much I can show though if it doesn't need replacing. Most of it is fairly straight forward but the Front Crank and Oil Pump O-Ring can be troublesome. But I could certainly do a "common oil leak locations" video.

      Yes please, if it is not too much trouble.
      With the Covid pandemic hanging over us I am learning new things, such as doing things I never thought I would do before. This one of them.
      Next step, taking up brain surgery…☺️

    I used Honda Bond Gasket sealer on the blank and to hold the gasket in place while fitting. Clean surfaces with scotchbrite pads and wipe clean with cloth. With cover upside down add one small pea sized dollop of honda bond to the gasket groove at each corner/bend and long straight sections between bolt holes. Lay the gasket in the groove squishing the honda bond. Wipe excess. Wait just over a minute for sealer to semi cure enough to hold gasket in place while upside down. Then just place down and align bolt holes.

    Great work. I will tackle mine in a few days. I did not know about the 2 vent pipes, so i will make sure i check those also.
    The only info i could add, which may help others, is to use 'loops' of dental floss through each screw hole in order to hold the gasket in place when you flip it over. And when the gasket is seated correctly, just snip each loop of floss and slowly pull it out prior to screwing the bolt in. IT does take time, but it will help.

      That's a very good tip. If I ever need to do one again, I`ll make I try it! Thanks

      @@saabfeverfrank Thank you, this is only if people dont have grease or sealer as an alternative. (And sometimes people use too much sealer and over time bits of the dried sealer break off and get into the oil and block the oil channels).

      Yes, having done a few myself, this (a dental floss loop tied in every valve cover screw hole) is the most failproof method I have encountered to hold the two gaskets in place while flipping it.

    Thanks a lot. Will try and change mine today on our MY 07, Saab 9-5 2,3 t Vector, Biopower.
    My substitute gasket is a “Elring” no. 892.930 from Germany. Bought at my local spare parts dealer.
    I’ll get back with feedback afterwards.

    • @saabfeverfrank
      @saabfeverfrank  3 роки тому

      That would be great, I`ll always welcome feedback from the community.

    • @christernorfall9229
      @christernorfall9229 2 роки тому +1

      Yes I did. I am not an mechanics wizard at all. But I used the Elring spare part and have not experienced any oil leaks since then.
      I am still a bit proud to have managed this. (Laugh all you want, it is all on me…😂)
      But make sure you have all the parts and tools before you start. Once you start the “surgery” there is no turning back.

    I used ball bearing grease inside the groove to hold the gasket in place while the cover was upside down. To good effect.

      Thanks, that's a handy tip especially since most people probably won't have Loctite 518 lying around. I imagine that anything sticky enough will suffice.

    Oh no! Not the Pro Parts Sweden. Nothing but dreadful results when I've used their parts. I hate when I'm ordering a part, and they are my only option.

      Yeah I have to admit that my experience with them hasn't been too good either however, I`ve gone back through my paper work and discovered that it was actually a Febi gasket.
