    When I learned to do this on my own hair, I did the braid as far as I could then wrapped the hair around the dread. Then used hair gel to hold it in place then wrapped the rubber thread around the end of my hair. I like this braid type more then the other 3 stand braid. Thanks for sharing 😃

    • @doctoredlocks
      @doctoredlocks  8 років тому

      Heck yeah! I hope it helps. I think most people do it in a similar way to how you describe it - but if you have longer hair, sometimes the regular braid will be longer than the dreads! :) Hopefully this will help people with longer hair avoid that too.

    I wish I could do this on my own. Carpal tunnel keep me from doing anything anymore. I was trying to make braid extensions and my hands cramped so bad I had to stop. No clue why until recently when I had a nerve study done. 😭😭. It's hard for me to make synthetic dreads as well though it's a tab bit easier tham braids.
    I WISH I could find someone close by who could do this while the beauty shops are closed. Will keep looking...

      It takes a little bit of practice, but I’m proof that even the hair inept can do it. It helps that your parting doesn’t have to be perfectly neat (although it’s cool if it is). It just takes alligator clips and time :) My first installation took me almost 4hrs, but I can usually do an install in 1-2 or under now!

    • @doctoredlocks
      @doctoredlocks  7 років тому +1

      That really depends on the type, size & style of the dreads you want to put in. 70 DE is a pretty average amount for a full head. If you are buying our dreads, you can always order more and then send back any unopened packs. :)

    Question! I have been wearing wool dreads on and off for about 2 years now but I’ve noticed my hair thinning recently, I’m thinking from very early traction alopecia. Do you have any advice on how to keep wool dreads without causing stress on the scalp?

    • @doctoredlocks
      @doctoredlocks  3 роки тому +7

      Yes, braid with less tension at the scalp. Many people think that the tighter the install, the better - which simply isn't the case and can cause damage. If weight isn't the culprit, then you need to adjust your install tension.

    • @ladyJustis
      @ladyJustis 3 роки тому +3

      Always keep even portions of wool/your hair. Too much weight on the natural hair will cause hair loss

    My wife wanted this done and all my instruction came from this video. Something you didn’t address was the beginning hair on the nape, where there isn’t much hair. I included them into nearby sections since you did say something about like that. A few days in and the back of her neck became very red and bumpy where the hair is pulling, particularly on the sparse hair at the bottom of the back of her neck. I suppose I made them too tight but I thought that was needed to keep them in. So then a relative sent the picture to a stylist and she made a spectacle out of it and told everyone how terribly wrong I did it. I followed your instructions to a “t”. Why do you think this happened?

    • @doctoredlocks
      @doctoredlocks  6 років тому +20

      First, shame on your relative for being an ass. There is no reason to make you feel bad AT ALL. I can tell you exactly what happened.
      When you include hair at the nape, if you include the tiny finer hairs that are a bit further away from the section, just make sure that you keep the tension a bit looser on them. When we turn our head, it will pull these follicles more than average and it will irritate them. This happens with all braiding - and can happen anywhere on the head, but is most commonly seen at the nape and the front hairline. The only way to stop tension bumps from happening is to loosen your technique - it is possible to be too tight. Make sure that when you put in each dread that you can move each piece freely at the base in any direction without it being too tight to the scalp or pulling on any tiny strands. If you do get bumps, adjust any major offending dreads and then use benedryl or another anti-histamine to take the swelling in the bumps down. You can use some ibuprofen as well to for any headaches or neckaches.
      The other thing is that when the bumps are healing, don't scratch them. Any bacteria from our fingers will keep them from fully healing.
      The first time I ever had tension bumps I thought it was some kind of head lice - I had my hair braided out of the country, and it was literally the WORST feeling ever. So I completely get it.
      You are an awesome hubby for doing this. Hopefully this experience won't scare you off from trying it again or tweaking the ones that need to be adjusted. Sounds like you did a pretty great job for a first time through. :) When we update the video, I will make sure to include a disclaimer about tension bumps. If you aren't familiar with braids and bumps it can certainly be a rude learning curve! Thanks for the tip and I'm here if you need any help. :)

    Hello there, I don't know if you're still answering comments here but here's the question: I had dreads done this way and after a few days they all bended in waves in the sections where the hair was braided around it as it's shown in this video. Is it because it was unevenly braided? Is it possible, if done properly, for it to not go curl the dread, or dies it always curly? Thank you

    • @doctoredlocks
      @doctoredlocks  5 років тому +2

      It shouldn't make the dreads curly or wavy, they should remain exactly as they look in the beginning. What is possible is that they were loose and were slipping. This could cause them to bunch up and look wavy at the base. We do have a troubleshooting video that addresses this. Check out this video and see if this helps!

      k, is the spine of the blanket stitch braid on the inside of the curl? It looks like the spine of it is being held tightly, but the hair that's wrapped around is looser, which is causing that side to bow out ever so slightly. You might be able to put some steam to each braid and get them to straighten out a bit in the meantime - but next time when you do the this style of braid, wrap as tightly to the top of the last wrap as you can. Hopefully, this makes sense. :D

    I have a question. I want to add my dead horse's coarse mane hair to my own, permanently. How can I do that especially w/ coarse horse hair.

    • @doctoredlocks
      @doctoredlocks  3 роки тому +1

      First, condolences on your loss. Horse friends are the best.
      Second, the task at hand. Here's how I would tackle it.
      First, you'll want to dread up the mane into individual dread pieces. I would use a backcomb/crochet technique to create the dreads.
      Next, to address the coarseness, I would use a perm solution to relax and make the hair more pliable. You'll want to do a test dread - but my suspicion is that you will need to use an alkaline perm (they tend to be a bit more aggressive at lifting the cuticle, softening the strands and relaxing the hair). Make sure you neutralize it.
      Lastly, with it dried really well, I would do a sew-in technique to attach them (to make sure they hold even if the textures still don't want to play well together) and crochet over the top to blend.
      Hopefully this helps!! :)

    I wonder how this would look with the full head just like this. cuz obviously the pink doesn't exactly match but but it's a DE dread extension so only half of them would have the pink roots look, you know what I'm saying? so it might actually look fine without wrapping jumbo braid over the natural hair like you show in the complete color change video. i just don't know how I'd find a color of jumbo braid hair that would match whatever crazy color I would want to do.. that is, if I did an unnatural color such as purple or pink. (my hair is currently just my natural brown.) I dislike wool dreads. but to get a full set of kanekolon dreads is at least $100. so once I get a bit of extra money maybe I'll just get some brown dreads, maybe ombre from dark to light or something and just do like in this video. then later on when I have MORE extra money and time I'll try to go for an unnatural color

    • @doctoredlocks
      @doctoredlocks  7 років тому +4

      Right, the pink doesn't match - but its hard to show a technique if it matches too well. If you are going to make your own dreads, you might like the technique for harlequin dreads - where one side matches your natural color, and one side is a completely different color. You can get away with less blending work AND still have full bright obnoxious colors mixed in without braids over the top. :) You can find that one our channel or at our website doctoredlocks.com in the synth dread creation tutorials.

    • @doctoredlocks
      @doctoredlocks  7 років тому +3

      If you are doing dreads, then the length wouldn't matter - you could even go way shorter since your hair is braided up on the dreads themselves. :) It's really just a matter of the length you want your hair to be.
