- Welcome to my Top 20 Favorite Watercolors of 2024! I'm so excited to share these with you, so make yourself a drink and a snack, and don't forget to grab a notebook to make a note of anything you like. This is a very quiet and relaxing video; I'll chat here and there and talk about the colours, but I'm painting the swatches very carefully and slowly to make a beautiful swatch chart that I'm offering to my Patreon members as a free high-res download. I'm also hoping to make it into a print too (or even use it as part of a future postcard set!). I hope you'll find some new colours that you love and will possibly want to add to your own palette. All details can be found below.

So glad to see an artist use so many variations in brands of colors and also some handmade ones. Glad that you are different.
I would love if you could do a “budget assortment swap” for those of us who can’t buy the expensive ones
Me too! I can’t afford them 😢 beautiful colours tho.
This is a great idea!
I feel like there aren’t enough ‘budget’ watercolor brands that sell paints individually( especially ones that granulate and color separate). But Roman szmal, a gallo, and Van Gogh might be some more affordable options to check out!
Same! Seeing these swatched, I can see why these are pricey though ❤ something to save up for.
yes please! And thank you for your wonderful videos
24:20 yes to the watercolour palette tour 😂🎉🎉🎉
Noted! :)
@@NatashaNewtonArt I’m looking for some new colours to fill my updated palette
Welcome to my Top 20 Favourite Watercolours of 2024! Always love your pebble swatches. It was your Schmincke supergranulated pebble swatch video that got me into granulated paints. Besides the forest grey, I’m loving the intense colour of the harbour blue, and the really deep red ( kidney bean ), asphalt and asphodel are beautiful moody colours. Is it wrong of me to prefer painting swatches than pictures? I used to paint birds, but since having a gap of thirty years I’m trying to get back into painting again, using different themes, styles and watercolour’s.
Hello. Beautiful colors. Fun fact: Sombra tostada means Burnt Umber and I don’t think I’ve ever seen such a Beautiful version as the one swatched in this video.
I didn't know that! Thanks for sharing this fact. :)
I love this! I hope you do release it as a print. I greatly enjoyed watching all these colors develop.
The way you swatch and the way you made shades is incredible. I subscribe❤
Natasha, this was mesmerizing to watch. The colors are all stunning and I have too many favorites to mention. Thank you for sharing. Am new to your channel and so glad to have found you. 🧡
Love these colors, probably the 1st half had more of my favorites but the are all spectacular, I love them when you can enjoy their granulating.
I just ordered both of your sets from Deep deep light. I have been fascinated with your use of these earthy, moody paints since I first saw them on your channel a year ago. I finally decided I have to try them. I am so happy that they have your sets so I did not have to figure out which ones to get.
So great to have this gift of your 2024 watercolour favourites. I've got into a habit like you of changing my watercolour palettes a couple of times a year. Pebble swatching is definitly a wonderful way to showcase these collours because as you say you can see them mass tone and lighter within the fom of a pebble. am sure these colours a reflection of how you are painting now. There is something about handmade colours too, they often have unique qualities and I love too that they often have very unique names too. So glad that you are an ambassador for Deep Deep Light, I do really love their paints (thanks to you and Kriksis) I am so happy that I made the decision last year to only use handmade colours, you do pay a little more, but I think it is worth it and I noticed a step up in my own work, and they somehow gave me a new boldness/confidence in my working with them and they are also great for mixed media working as well. (matt) P.s some currnt favourite colours (and these are all deep deep light colours) are: Dragonfly Blue, Mother Earth Grey, Night Raspberry (such a cool name!),and Blueberry. P.p.s of the colours you showed us ,I love the Olive Green Deep and Harbour Blue
Thanks Matt, I'm so glad that you enjoyed the video! It's great to hear that working with handmade colours has had a positive impact on your work. I agree that there is something really special about them. Nice choices with the DDL colours - Night Raspberry is a stunner!
@@NatashaNewtonArt thank you Natasha, wouldn't it be lovely if naming colours was an actual job title, you could say you were a professional colour namer, would be such a fun way to earn a living! hope you and Dominic are both okay and having a great weekend (Matt)P.s I also loved the 'Butterfly' colour, really intriguing almost a colour shifting paint if that makes sense, may have to add this one to my collection.....
These are all so beautiful, Natasha!!! ❤ I just love them!!!
Thanks Roxanne! x
Beautiful pebbles painting 👍😍
Thank you so much!
2weeks later...I was watching again. I ordered the Holbein Gray of Gray. I do love more vivid & bright floral colors. But I'm a fan of the subtle & soft too...for sky work & clouds...so this is great for that. Thanks!
Love love love the way you swatched these beautiful colours😊thank you so much
Thank you so much!
Now that is *_a pallet._* Exquisite!
I always draw inspiration from others whom I admire, but these earthy colours almost line up with my own selections. Not that I am acquainted with these specific colour names. _Something new to add to my collection._
As a first time viewer, I found your enthusiasm a relaxing charm to wile away an hour… With a unique visual to finish up.
Bravo!
I really appreciate your kind comments, thank you!
I would love to see a pallet tour!!!! ❤️❤️❤️
I love your swatching videos 🤍 I would also really enjoy a watercolor palette tour.
Edit: I think Wagon Green might be my favorite. It’s a beautiful green! I would also absolutely purchase a print.
I'm so pleased that you like them! Thank you.
Green is my favorite color, especially those natural, yellowy greens, browny greens, like the ones you swatched. So I would not have minded if all 20 were greens!
These swatches are beautiful - like asteroids floating in space! I think A Gallo’s Olive Green Deep really stands out for me and I could imagine life on there 🤩
These colors are so beautiful. Thank for sharing.
I'm so glad you like them, thank you!
I love the pebble swatching so much - especially because we are color palette kindred spirits 🥰.
The colors look beautiful the way you swatch them. My favs, olive green burnt sienna light and the last one! But really I like them all. Thank you for sharing your ideas.
I would love to buy a post cars of this chart if you make one.
Always love your videos, Natasha. You introduced me to Deep Deep Light watercolors, and I now have a collection of about 50! What I love about them is that when I come back to a painting after it has dried, I’m always pleasantly surprised at how beautiful the colors are after they’ve dried! That’s not always the case with other paints. See you over on Patreon!
This is so true! I've really noticed that about their colours in particular. 50 is an impressive collection, Jill! I'm so glad you love them.
Always love to see your pebble swatching...some favourites from here that I have already: Olive Green Deep, Asphalt, Harbour Blue, Grey of Grey and Urban Grey. I now feel the need to add Captain's Grey and the Payne's Grey Original.
And 4 colours I have been using a lot recently, 3/4 I feel very un-Natasha: Daler Rowney Raw Sienna (as a yellow), and Sennelier Opera Rose, Emerald Green & Phthalo Turquoise.
Thanks Jo! You definitely need the Captain's Grey - when you add more water to it than I did here, it looks different again. I love it!
Love your pebbles ❤
I am going to do this when I get home! So beautiful!
Have fun!
I love colour swatching, thank you for this very appealing form! The same as you I adore nice granulating colours - I’m just more into the brightful ones. My favourite two colours at the moment are Ultramarine Turquoise by A. Gallo and Rosehip by Deep Deep Light. Out of the colours you‘ve swatched I like Harbour Blue and Olive Green by A. Gallo best; I already own them. The colour I‘m most interested to get is Butterfly by Deep Deep Light, it looks special! But Asphalt also is fascinating! 🎨❤️
I have Asphalt, and it IS fascinating! So is their Captain’s Grey!
Love these videos of yours. They've helped introduce me to so many fabulous beautiful watercolors! Thanks!
Lovely swatching, as always. My current color obsession is QoR Cobalt Green. I also love DS Green Apatite, and WN Cobalt Turquoise Light.
The QoR Cobalt Green is lovely!
Thanks to you introducing me to Deep Deep Light, I recently got some of their paints and Rose Ashes is a definite favorite. Such a unique color that is so enchanting!
I'm so glad you like them!
Hello Natasha! I really enjoy your videos and I am always inspired by them. My favourite colour at the moment is actually one I made myself. 😊 It is a dusky somewhat lighter slightly granulating rosy violet - a bit like potter’s pink but cooler. It is made from a slate found at the Côte d‘ Azur, which seems very fitting, cause to me it looks quite elegant. It is enormously satisfying to be able to make your own colours and to discover new pigments. Maybe you should try this too. It is really not that hard.I even make my own binder. Greetings from Germany! Andrea
That sounds really lovely!
There is nothing more relaxing and indescribably dreamy smile producing as a Natasha Newton Pebble Swatching Video!
👩🏻🎨👑🫖🎨🖌️💖
Ah, thank you so much!
Such an amazing video, thank you. I watched it last night & swatched pebbles today. I either get the paint too thick or too thin but only 2 out of 10 looked ok. More practice needed.
I love all the colours you used & many of them surprised me.
One of my favourites is the Forest Grey. I love how it dried looking like a planet's surface. I bought the Schmincke Forest set after your video swatching them. So glad I did. I also love the Sienna & Butterfly. 👍
I love love love this kind of videos! I bought some colored pencils base on your recommendation and i use them ever since, lovely selection! Now it's time for new watercolors and on top of that I love how you are explaining colors, super relaxing!
Thank you so much for such a lovely comment. I'm glad that you found some coloured pencils that you really enjoy using, and I hope that this video is just as useful!
Loving these colors. Thanks for introducing me to so many lovely greens and greys. Really enjoyed this video.
So glad that you enjoyed it!
This was the video that I needed to watch today. The olive green deep is my favourite. It’s amazing.
Thanks Amanda!
🤩🤩🤩 love love love, Natasha! All the greens!
Aren't they gorgeous!
I really enjoy your videos. I have them playing in the background whilst in my workshop. Thank you for sharing!
That's so nice to know, thank you!
The A. Gallo Olive Green Deep-Wow! Love your pebble swatching videos and granulating watercolors! Thank you for sharing your current favorites🙏🙏🙏
Thank you so much!
.. all manner of deliciousness going on here Natasha!
Each one a beaut but Olive green deep & Sombra tostada (burnt umber 😉) do it for me the most!
The creaky door interlude reminded me of something I meant to ask aaaaages ago .. are you still catching those wonderful orbs?
Love & Hugs to you my darling xx
We certainly are! We've had quite a few again recently and some actually set off the security cameras (we're almost certain that they're not bugs or dust - they behave differently and look different too). Hope you and your little pup are keeping well! xxx
I think you should try to get your hands on the new Gansai Tambi granulating watercolours and make some crazy bright pebble swatches! XD
Wagon Green and Butterfly are beautiful! I don't need any more greens... or do I?
That burnt sienna light just glows ❤
I think it single handedly allowed the other colors to reflect and shine even more. Love it so much ❤
Always love your videos and would be happy to see how you go about setting up a palette ❤
It's a special colour, isn't it! The palette video is on the filming list. :)
This palette is so beautiful. These are the colours that speak to me. I love a good Payne's Grey or Davy's grey. But now I use Procreate more than watercolours and any sense of colour preference has gone out the window. Suddenly I'm just throwing all kinds of colour at my pictures. I need to go back to my earthy muted roots.
That harbour blue swatch looks exactly like an emu egg!
Ooh, nice!
Thanks for sharing. Beautiful inspiring colours.
Excellent Natasha. Forest Grey, Harbour Blue, Isaro - Payne's Grey, and Asphalt are my favourites. I have a few watercolours made from mineral pigments (crushed up minerals) that I need to try this with. (Subscribed too 😁)
Thank you, I'm so glad that you enjoyed the video!
I won't lie...I may have squealed a little when I saw you were doing a swatching video. I love every colour there and there are more than a few in my Jackson's wish list :). I don't know if I can chose a fave colour of mine but I can say without reservation that DDL is my favourite maker. And a big yes to a palette tour.
Ha ha! I'm so glad you enjoy them. A palette tour is definitely on my filming list!
A colour named after me!
Thank you Natasha, I enjoyed doodling alongside your swatching today and found it very calming and restful. I think my favourite of those twenty is the A. Gallo "Harbour Blue". I'm very drawn to water, so that one just leads my senses into their happy place! A print of that finished swatch would be so beautiful❤
I'm so glad that you enjoyed it, thank you!
I recently discovered Essee watercolors and omg I love them. I've heard of Deep Deep Light and they seem to be really nice too. Right now my top brands are Qor, Daniel Smith, M Graham, and now Essee.
I must say one of my favorite shades of watercolor has to be Holbein in Mars Yellow. Kriksis mentioned it and I immediately fell in love and I hunted it down untill I found it. I’m in the U.S and I must say I had to go thru hoops and loops to find a store that carried it. But it is oh so worth it. Oh and I’m also madly in love with Sennelier Warm Grey. ❤
That's a beautiful colour!
Just beautiful! 😍❤
Thmubs up and comment to help. AH great way to swatch... like it a lot...
Thank you! I appreciate that. :)
The burnt sienna would be perfect for painting an amber stone
Loved this video ❤ I have been interested in Deep Deep Light paints. I love all the choices you used here.
Thank you!
Love your color selections. I have several of these - Lakeland Slate and Isaro's Paynes Grey are two of my favorites as well. Hope to order some colors from Deep Deep Light soon to try out
Thanks Liz! If you do decide to treat yourself, don't forget that you can get 10% off your order with my code. :)
I would love for you to discuss how you build your palettes. Love this swatching session. Thank you
Thanks so much for this Natasha!! I love so many of those, but I'm really loving the Harbour Blue
Pebble swatching! Yay!
It's back, baby! 😂
@@NatashaNewtonArt 😂
진짜 색깔 너무 멋져요~
I'm at the end of the video and wow, all of them look gorgeous next to each other! I could totally imagine if you would make a palette with these all colours in one place. :) Thank you for calming video! I will watch it again for sure. I see a lot of my favourites as well, muted tones are the best!
Thanks so much, Kriksis!
My favourites are Harbour Blue and the Olive Deep Green. I am surprised that they are the same brand. I'll definitely add A. Gallo to my wishlist. (My daughter likes the same colours)❤
A. Gallo has some amazing colours!
I have worked on artwork, large scale where I have to keep colors consistant so I had to mix cups of color. And can't stop incase the colors evaporate.
So while the pans are covenant tubes work best for myself
Absolutely love all of these!!! I’m in the process of putting an artists quality palette together and would love a video on actually putting a limited palette together- which essential colours to choose etc., for travel painting. My favourite colours are Daniel Smith’s Lunar Blue, Moonglow, and Quinacridone Burnt Orange.
Love the Olive Green Deep.
I love your pebbles , Burnt Sienna light and Isaro Paynes Grey are very pretty. My favorite colours that are enjoying at the moment Royal Brown from Rosa Gallery , and Green Gold from Winsor and Newton.
I have to say, I moved to UK a little bit over a year ago, and before that I could not fully apreciate the magic of pebbles. There is so much variety in here, and some of them are just the cutest thing i've seen, like for example the coral pebble i found last weekend. Now add to it my fav thing ever, which is watercolour, and you made me romanticise a bunch of rocks, which i have never seen coming in my life before 😂 Also Whatever the Weather palette looks sooooo tempting.
Ha ha, I love that!
I want them all! But that harbour blue is gorgeous!
Such a great idea for swatching
Would love to see a watercolour palette tour and what you use them for.
I will definitely film this.
@@NatashaNewtonArt that would be awesome :)
the moment you hear Natasha Newton say there is not going to be greens only, you think: yeah we need to see all the grey colors too!😂❤
Ha ha! Can't deny it.
Love the forest grey and harbor blue.
Loved the colors and conversation in this video.
Thanks Barbara! So glad you enjoyed it.
Such beautiful colours! Have you ever tried Jackmans watercolours? they are amazing quality and they do quite a few granulating colours now, my current favourite being 'sage' which I think you would love, I use it for mountains and tree trunks ❤
I haven't but one of my Patreon members swatched some recently and they looked lovely!
That's great! I love your videos! They inspire me!
That's so great to hear, thank you!
Really lovely, soothing video❤
So glad you enjoyed it!
Loved the video!! ❤ would loveeee a watercolour palette tour! 🥰
Love your swatching. Can you track down the 24 new Holbein granulating watercolours and do them pebble swatch style? Also thank you for working on a nice cotton paper, makes a huge difference.
I've seen them and was intrigued but I think some of the colours might be a bit too bright for my liking? I agree with you about the cotton paper! :)
@@NatashaNewtonArt I just found a youtuber with swatches and at 6.30 there are some beautiful Natasha moody colours . I am not sure if Holbein will sell them a single tubes but here is the link...ua-cam.com/video/quxtmeFqmXM/v-deo.html
Great video! I would love to see swatches of all your palettes.
Gorgeous colors! I can’t say what my favorite paints are: too many😂
I would love a palette tour❤
I definitely need to film one!
Beautiful swatches Natasha, I will definitely be buying the Daniel Smith Burnt Sienna Light. Love to buy a print of these swatches should you make it available in whatever format you decide.
Thanks Margaret!
Top three or five colours? Hmmm, PY129, PG50 cobalt teal, PO48, PR206 and PO71 transparent pyrrole orange.
These are all stunning colours. So difficult to choose a favourite (-: Marion ❤
Hi Natasha, I have several colours that I love but two of my favourites are Tundra Violet by Schmincke Horadam and Undersea Green by Daniel Smith!
That A Gallo Olive Green Deep is just something else!
It's an incredible colour, isn't it!
@@NatashaNewtonArt It really is. I couldn’t understand why people liked it so much, but now I think I do.
Beautiful colors! absolutely *love* this palette! Your swatching technique is an ideal way to represent them, but are you able to do this on 300gsm paper? It looks like maybe it would overwork the paper? Is that why you go with the 640#?
You can totally do this on 300gsm paper. :)
Lovely selections should really not be watching this beacause they are all so pretty and I have so much already, swatching some new Roman Szmal colors, but these fullpans I got are so difficult to get out of the packaging. Currently playing around with my collections, I buy a bit much but I'll go on with using it. At the moment playing around with the Daniel Smith Bloodstone Genuine and Quinarcridone burnt scarlet which are very nice.
They're both lovely Daniel Smith colours. :)
If the Roman Szmal are sticking to the packaging (because they have honey) - put them in the freezer for like 4 minutes before removing the packaging x
@@SketchesnScrubs Thanks for this tip, but this was not the problem that made it so hard. The watercolor sleeve was stuck to the alumium/paper foil due to glue issues and I did not want to rip it totally to pieces.
Hello. Lovely colors. I have to ask the tin pallet that you are using where is it from?
The large one with the swatches in the lid is from Deep Deep Light (link to their shop in the description underneath the video) and the other one is from Jackson's. :)
Everywhere I have looked online is out of stock of the Betty Hayways No.7 watercolour brush... what is the closest equivalent in your experience? I'm in the U.S. Thanks!!!!!
Also, I have fallen in love with your channel!
I guess the closest equivalent that I own might be the Jackson's Quill (I think that's what it's called), but I also love the Pro Arte Prolene round brushes and the Princeton Aqua Elite round in sizes 4 and 6.
@@NatashaNewtonArt thank you so much!
By accident I stumbled upon Etsy shops selling hand made watercolor pans, have you ever tried any of those it have you tried making your own?
I've tried a few - Red Clover Meadow and Beyond Indigo are particularly good! I don't have enough time to make my own paints, but I can imagine it would be fun. :)
LOL you should have named this video "19 Pebbles and a Kidney Bean!"😁😁
Ha ha, I totally should!
you won't believe how i found this video!
Tell me!
@@NatashaNewtonArt i searched "702399 syhklmm" for no reason and your video was the first to come up
Where did you get your Deep Deep Light palette?
색상이 너무너무 환상적이에요. 그 팔레트를 사고싶어요! 저한테 파세요!
Ha ha, that's funny! Thank you. :)
What are the chances of you creating these pallets for us to buy 💔🙏🏻😔 pleeeeeeeeease all of the pallets you’ve shown ❤
While I love your choices, this brand of watercolor paint is far too expensive and/or geographically unavailable for a great many of us. I support any artist who grows their skills as you have done. I still love your work. I simply cannot afford the paints you are currently using.
I'm so pleased you love my work! There are many different brands of paint in my Top 20. As it's my personal Top 20 favourite paints, I had to choose the ones I love the most. I'm sorry if you think they're too expensive, but hopefully there's something in this video to inspire you.
Too much talking beyond what was necessary.
Bye then! (Was that short enough for you?)
