    In this video, I'll swatch all of my current collection of Wallace Seymour watercolors while answering questions submitted by my subscribers. I'll share the most valuable piece of art advice I've been given, whether or not I'm self-taught, where my colour palette inspiration comes from, and more.
    This is a super calm and chilled video, so make yourself a drink and a snack, or get your sketchbook/current project and put this on in the background while you work. I'd love to hear the best art advice you've ever been given in the comments section below. I hope that you enjoy the video. Natasha x

    The best advice I've ever received as an artist is not to compare your work with that of others. If you lined up 100 artists and put them in front of a scene, you'll get 100 works of art that may be similar on the surface, but is unique to the artist themselves. If you don't put that out to your audience, you're depriving the world of your individual vision. We all have those inner critics, but it feels good to lock them in a soundproof booth with ideas such as this.

    Wow! Love these watercolors! The colors are gorgeous! I was mainly taught to work in oils over 50 years ago. Abt 30 years ago I transitioned to acrylics….now, I love gouache, colored pencils and watercolor. Who knows…one day I may go back to oils…it doesn’t matter what you use, just do your art and enjoy!❤

    Oil paints can be cleaned off brushes with linseed oil. We were banned from using turps at uni and so that’s what I did. Scraping off most of the excess left on the brush with the palette knife on to the palette first, then finally cleaning with oil and a rag. Hope this might help you. Love the Vintage swatches!

    Lovely video from every perspective. The paints are absolutely gorgeous, even better than I expected, maybe one day I will treat myself to a few of these. How rich they are! I am a lover of deep darks, so these are like an incitement to buy! Your q&a’s were so interesting, gosh I can remember just how much £500’s could get you back then! I loved painting in oils, and everything else feels a little unnatural to me, but space, chemicals and practicality prevented me, along with a white cat that was constantly moulting! She is not with me now and I have a really nice accumulation of water based oils that will get over some problems. I have been working in acrylics and watercolour like you, but unlike you I am not very courageous! So your just keep going advice is spot on for me. Thanks so much for that. I so relate to your feelings about paints, one of the things I like about your posts is that you do ‘artist talk’!

    The best piece of advice I ever received was that everyone can do art, and that just because you're not "naturally gifted" at drawing doesn't mean you can't enjoy art and learn how to get better at the techniques you find difficult or off-putting.
    Equally, if you don't want to use those techniques, you don't have to - think of all of the stunning collages, sculptures and abstract paintings out there in the world that don't involve precise work with a pen or pencil!
    I wish I'd known this as a child and teenager with what, in hindsight, was some quite frankly rubbish art teaching at school. Perhaps I would have found this wonderful creative outlet that I enjoy so much earlier in my life.

      @NatashaNewtonArt  Рік тому

      They're fun to work on and I love the ready-made size for swatches, but to be honest I do prefer to work on regular watercolour paper for swatches. I feel that the paints perform a little better on less heavily textured paper and dry a little more evenly (these looked a little blotchy in places!). You could just use a cold-pressed cotton watercolour paper - that should show granulation nicely.

    Dear Natasha,
    Here are a few tips for you to challenge yourself.
    There is a difference between putting paint onto a palette with water there in a well, compared to using wet paint directly on the swatch. So, this will affect how the granulation forms as soon as it hits the paper. If you use it dried on a palette or pan, you will find that you use much less too!
    Another pro tip is to put small amounts of water into your palette first, without dipping and wiping your brush, it is quicker, and it stops the bead forming near the ferrule, again to be wiped off on a towel on the edge of the table, at a slight angle to get rid of the bead.
    You will also use less paint if you start with the weakest mix on your swatch, to the mass tone last.
    Wipe your brush on paper serviettes, as this reduces pigment in waste water.
    Then use the paper as collage in new works with either a rice paste glue like yamato paste or paper Mod Podge matt medium as the glue, and coating over it.
    Use three glasses of warm water. One for cools, one for warms, (half the colour wheel in each jar) and the third is clean. I use pretty jugs from the op shop, to hear the "tink" as part of the experience.
    If you want to cut paper which has a deckled edge, wipe some warm water along the seam. Fold the piece over and out a few times, then tear to the right side, not up.
    I empty my cobalts and cadmiums on my plants, apparently not a bad thing after researching yesterday. I enjoy seeing the nicer coloured water go down the sink! One can also get rid of the water part, and decant back into full pans with each painting session, they become interesting random mixes.
    Dry brushes while flat, or slight 10 degree angle pointed downwards. Try the Elk on Etsy as a brush holder!
    Magnetite can be moved with lots of water and a magnet!
    If it is a light colour like yellow, always mix the dark in small amounts into the lightest, to not waste the light colour paint.
    Adding the water at the bottom, will only move part of the granulation, as you stroke it upwards. Try doing it with one swatch, particularly with the Potter's pink.
    Khadi paper with it's definite uniform, deep roughness, will give you a different result to another paper.
    Why not Try Fabriano Artistico in a pad, in traditional white, or the full sheets of Fabriano Artistico pack 3 + 1 for free. You can make them into a cheaper sketch book, and use the Coptic binding to stitch yourself, to lay flat. I challenge you to also cut your paper with or across the grain of the paper, will also effect the granulation and flow movement.
    Try the Etchr sketchbook in landscape linen A4, 3 pack is more affordable, and I use one for each topic, one is for swatching, one I use for illustration, the third...possibly a gift. It is good for enhancing your swatches. Far more satisfying, and will look totally different to the khadi!
    For that reason, I don't like the Canson XL, as the pattern of the grain, of the press has a look like mandarin skin. Each little dip, perfectly patterned reminds me of their pastel paper.
    How about this? You can use a glue stick on any metal or plastic palette, then wipe it with a wet tissue, to reduce the staining and beading!
    As for oil paint you can clean up with any light cooking oil. You can also use odourless solvent or medium, citrus turps, or gum turps. The look of oil paint, can not be created with acrylic, as it looks rounded, even with a medium added. Oil has sharper, higher edges if the brush is twisted in the hand, or applied with a palette knife.
    I think your work would look great as a woodcut or lino cut, and it isn't hard to do with a small intaglio press, or a barron. An intaglio press is good for all kinds of printing, including relief. You could look up, a reduction print. Print a colour. Cut. Print another colour Cut...etc...
    Oil paint for printing is a clean up on glass, and looks wonderful as it becomes a satin sheen in the light. This also gets you into papers like mulberry, the Japanese papers....another rabbit hole. My teacher at art school described the black as a panther jumping over the top of you" (the sheen changes up and down rolling, and the paint hissed as the roller went over the glass.)
    It is never to late to go to art school, or a vacation, or as you say take us for a walk with a gymble for your new course. Find your tribe, keep learning.
    The last thing I will say is I use an app, Camscanner on my iphone. It is terrific for taking photos of artwork, as we can control the edges, the shape distortion, add a watermark, or a handmade mark on paper to add like a stamp. You can take your photo of your work at night in the dark! The editing is amazing, and has OCR. It has lightening modes, and magic settings. Great for passports or important documents. I use it all the time, in progress to push my work further. Yesterday it showed me the stages I should have stopped at, overworked it completely, ah but I have my progress photos in Camscanner!
    Thanks for your lovely video, Natasha, and beautiful colour swatching. I think I liked that creamy shell pink colour at the end. I hope these words inspire you. Feel free to take a photo of this, so you can access this in the future, if you get stuck for a fast video idea or want to do something a wee bit different...
    In kindred spirit,

      I used to do that with my collage art. Half of my income was from direct licensing for various purposes (usually non-exclusively, and sometimes exclusively), and for magazine articles/covers. The other half was print shop sales and originals.

    • @NatashaNewtonArt
      @NatashaNewtonArt  Рік тому +1

      It basically means that a company/business will use your artwork for something and you're either paid a one-off fee for the use of the artwork, or royalty fees, which vary depending upon how much of the product they sell. Examples of licensing are book cover art, prints, greetings cards, phone cases etc. Hope that helps! x

      I'm not sure why that is, as they're a legit art store in Scotland! I've taken the link out of the description, but I've bought watercolours from them several times and everything has been fine. :) Glad you found a US seller though!

    I think the only place I could get this is via Choosing Keeping. Not sure where else anyone from United States could have access to these.

      I think at the moment they're largely UK based - they're quite difficult to get hold of even here!

    Do you keep your Wallace Seymour watercolors in the tubes or do you dry them in pans to include in your palette? Not sure how they re-wet in pans?

    • @NatashaNewtonArt
      @NatashaNewtonArt  8 місяців тому +1

      At the moment I use mine from the tubes, but a friend has hers in a palette and she said that they've been ok! Some re-wet faster than others, but you can mix in a bit of gum arabic when you pour them into the pan to help with re-wetting, or just spray them with water and allow a few minutes to reactivate.

    a really nice and relaxing swatch + Q&A =)
    the colors look wonderful. burnt sienne and thuilite cought my eye specifically.
    if you have already played around mixing them, how does thuilite perform in mixes? it looks like it could be a nice color for mixing

      @NatashaNewtonArt  Рік тому +1

      I've never used it in mixes! It's a very weak colour (although beautiful), so I'm not sure how well it would mix. I should try it perhaps!

    Can you share the name of the gallery that you will be exhibiting in with Melanie Chadwick and Kriksis please? I live in Cornwall and would love to come and see three of my favourite artists’ work for real.

      Coast Colour Canvas Gallery at Roskilly's Farm, St Keverne from 6th or 7th October for a week, I think. I need to check and will announce it nearer the time! :)

      @@NatashaNewtonArt thank you, will look forward to meeting you then if possible. Some Australian relations will be staying but they want to visit the grave of our mutual ancestors who are buried on and around the Lizard. It will depend on what other plans they have. Best wishes for a great show - would you like me to share information on my FaceBook list of friends - many of whom live in Cornwall and are artists?
