    If you have room for one more color: Prussian blue is AMAZING with quin burnt orange. The greens and browns you can get with those two is fantastic, it's one of my favorite color combinations and makes a cool limited pallete.

      I love mixing Qor’s Indigo with Quin Burnt Orange for the same reasons. I find I don’t even use my Burnt Umber if I have those two, plus I use Quin Burnt Orange more than any of my browns anyway (for portraits)

    I really enjoy your videos. For colors tend you intend to mix a lot (like your two yellows), you can put them as two separate stripes in the same well. This was actually an idea from Mijello Mission where they suggest putting two or three stripes of colors in the same well for those common mixtures. This will save you some space too 😄

    I'm on a no buy moratorium for the last several months. I have way too much paint! I like a few DS paints and may get that phathlo turquoise and Pipestone red. The only reason I'd get the Minnesota Pipestone red is because I'm from Minnesota and spent several summer trips to Pipestone to go to the museum and hieroglyphics area, and field trips. Lived 50 miles away. It's just nostalgia. I still have a little Pipestone turtle I got as a souvenir 60 years ago.

    Stunning colors!! Quin Gold is so much fun to mix with other colors, especially granulating colors. A new favorite of mine is DS Aussie Red Gold - PY83, PR101, and PV19. It’s a gorgeous deep reddish yellow. Thank you for sharing! 🙌💕🙌

    Hi Sarah! Another Sara here from Canada! You should really truly try Jadeite Green. It is the most stunning natural green and it's a primatek. It has a large value range as well! I discovered it through the artist Thomas Schaller! He uses only Jadeite and Serpentine as his greens for his landscapes and urban scenes. So I bought it and its such a beautiful color! It's better than your old diopside choice deeper and much more of a larger value range!

    You might want to consider trying their lavender gouache. Same pigments and binder but higher pigment load than the watercolour version. I found I was using up the watercolour one too quickly so switched to gouache to use very diluted or smaller ammounts in mixing for watercolour paintings and thicker for gouache paintings- dual purpose

    Hullo Sarah, I have only watched a few of your videos. I have stopped using DS paints. Not only the Primatek scandal but I had 3 horrible customer service sessions with their company that I have decided they simply care more for profits than customers. I know people can have bad days and can take it out on others, but 3 different customer service representatives across a 6 month time frame? Nope they lost me as a customer and as an Artist that recommended their paints in the past! I also can encourage you to try American Journey watercolor paints or DaVinci of California they are a full paint company and so wonderful to work with on the phone or VIA e-mails! Thank you for sharing your lovely palette and color choices, I think I have similar colors and mixers in several of my palettes. Please take care, be safe and have a lovely day 😊

    Happy Holidays! Thank you for sharing your palette update with us. In case you weren't aware, the production of PO48 has been discontinued, so if you fall hard for Quinacridone Burnt Orange, Quinacridone Gold, and Undersea Green, keep an eye on stock. When PO49 was discontinued, Daniel Smith had enough to keep producing for near a decade. QoR and Roman Szmal (and maybe others) have started introducing new versions to replace PO48 mixes.

    • @warpedweft9004
      @warpedweft9004 Рік тому +1

      it is impossible to get any paint with PO48 now. The buy up by Daniel Smith happened a number of years back and they've got no stock left with PO48 and haven't had for some time. Unless you can find something in a garage sale that's very old stock, you're out of luck.

    • @briwidmerart
      @briwidmerart Рік тому

    If you love turquoise, you should try Daniel Smith's Ultramarine Turquoise. I ended up keeping it on a palette instead of the Phthalo Turquoise because it has some granulation and far less drying shift. The only downside is that it doesn't get as dark in mass tone, but I actually like that because it means it doesn't overwhelm mixes as easily. 😄 Your praise of Amethyst has made me want to give it another try! And somehow I wasn't aware DS added a Quin Magenta in addition to the Quin Lilac. I'll be interested to see how you end up comparing them after using both for awhile.

    • @everartokelli
      @everartokelli Рік тому +3

      Ultramarine Turquoise is very similar in hue to Amazonite (although different in granulation) and bonus--is a Series 1 price. It's also mixable using DS Ultramarine PB29 and Phthalo Green PG7.

      I’ve found the same for the last two years. Love being creative alongside videos like this, which make me want to get out and sketching and just getting my brushes to paint and paper. But ultimately I haven’t been finding joy in painting anything, really. So it’s all on hold for me for now. It will come back, that inkling. So I’ll just wait it out and build up my list of places and ideas and I’ll gather another color or two, maybe try a couple DS colors, as I’ve never tried them. Just got a couple paintbrushes and a tiny black paper pad to use w markers and chalks. Till then, I’m watching and dreaming through amazing artists like Miss Sarah.

    Thank so much for a great video and God Jul to you from a snowy Sweden.!
    As I was looking though my stash to see if I had something alike to Lavender ( DS is very very expensive here) I was happy to find a good quality colour in my drawer that I will try in my mixes. If anyone is looking for a less expensive Lavender thecompany White Nights/St Petersburg makes a lavender watercolour w the same pigments that is in the Daniel Smith’s hue. It is also called Lavender. I know this company is based in Russia so it might be tricky to import because of embargos but it has always been a popular brand and I am sure shops still have it in stock. If you do not want to buy a Russian brand the Ukranian Rosa Gallery brand has a similar hue ( they normally have similar hues to the St Petersburg) but as I do not have it in my stash I don’t know the pigments but I am sure that is easily found on google.

    Deep Scarlet is a long-time permanent color on my palette, it’s probably my favorite rich red. Quin Gold is another long-time palette mvp. I tend to use it a lot with Holbein’s Neutral Tint, they compliment each other so well. Cobalt Turquoise is a recent addition to my palette, it’s cooler, brighter, and lighter than Phthalo Turq, and is definitely another “a little goes a long way” color. I’ve also swapped out DS’s UnderSea Green (which I love,) for Sennelier’s Greenish Umber, which I use All The Time.

    I think I have the same (or very similar) palette with 18 wells. I've sorta accumulated a lot of paints, but at some point wanted to build a custom palette. At first I found it difficult to limit myself to 18 paints, but now I'm super happy with the selection, and I reach for it more often than my larger tin of watercolors. I love the size of the palette.
    I also recently bought a bunch of granulating watercolors from Daniel Smith. I tend to not like granulating watercolors, but this time I intentionally set out to buy some, so that I could paint textured walls and such more easily. Have you tried Geothite yet? I bought that one to paint sandy beaches. Need to keep Bronzite in mind for some darker rocks. The Phthalo Turquoise is so stunning! I can see why you love it. I have a turquoise problem, though, so I should probably resist buying another one... xD

    Bloodstone makes some incredible mixes. I also love the Amazonite and Amethyst. I just got iron oxide brown and am loving it, too. I tend to use the Hansa Yellow light rather than Lemon Yellow. And I keep phthalo turquoise & ultramarine blue, too. Those are such beautiful colours!
    Happy Holidays to you both.

    Another wonderful video. It is sad that PO 48 is no more. I stocked up on all the DS watercolors that have PO 48 in it like Undersea green, quin gold, quin gold deep, sap green.

      What I've learned from changing up my palette in 2023 is that any color is replaceable!

      Wasn't there a DS blog post where they said they have enough of the pigment to keep making paint for the next 20 years?

      I think they said about 10 years but I feel good having an extra tube of each color that I love.

    Lavender is a color I absolutely love using also. I even use it, sometimes with various blues, for skies.
    Thank you for such a comprehensive review of so many D.S. paints.
    Have you tried any of the D.S. watercolor
    sticks? They are easy to pack for plein air painting and for travel.😊

    Oohh you need to try American Journey’s Carr Yellow. It is so beautiful and more transparent than DS New Gamboge.

    I love how you tell us how you use certain colors! Such a great video. I think I'll pick up that amazonite, and add deep scarlet and lavender to my "just for fun" palette to play with them. Thank you for sharing this and may you and ours have a very Merry Christmas! 🎄🎁🎅

    I use Quin Lilac instead of Opera Rose because of opera's fugitive issue. The lilac makes a pretty good substitute.

    Hi🙂 Phthalo Turquoise reminds me of my favorite blue color, Antwerp Blue. This is the first time I've heard of Phthalo Turquoise and it's gorgeous!
    Have you ever tried any of the American Journey Watercolors? They have some colors that are specific to them and "Coastal Fog" is one of them, since you mentioned coastal fog!
    Thanks for sharing!

    I also took workshops with both Iain Stewart and Thomas Schaller. Schaller prefers the Holbein Lavender so I bought that and found I prefer that to the DS. I’ve recently tried to recreate a John Singer Sargent and find I am liking the modern equivalents to the colors he had. One being “BrownPink” which I found from Sennelier. It was better than the Holbein greenish yellow Stewart liked and the DS rich green gold. I’m also trying using Viridian instead of phthalo green and Prussian blue instead of phthalo blue. I love the primateks. There is nothing like them and the granulations are awesome. Piedmontite is awesome as there is such a color shift depending on the saturation. Love serpentine, green apatite, jadeite and amazonite. I also like the quin lilac. PO48 has been discontinued so stock up now and with anything you like that has it in the mix. Quin burnt orange and quin gold. DS says they have a 20 year supply but it won’t last forever. I stocked up on the PO49 quin gold before it was gone and it’s even better than the current mix.
