Lotus 97T F1 ex Ayrton Senna: RAW Formula 1 Turbo Era Renault V6 Sound!

- Опубліковано 25 лип 2018
- This video is about a very special car both for Team Lotus, both for Ayrton Senna's career and for me too: the 1985 Lotus 97T.
It's so important to me because this was the very first F1 turbo car I've ever seen and recorded on my channel, back in 2014 at Imola Circuit during the Ayrton Senna Tribute event held for the 20th anniversary of the death of the Brazilian champion.
It's of course a special monster for Lotus F1 Team because with this car they were able to achieve a victory (three victories overall in 1985) marking the start of a brief return to the successful days of the 1960s and 1970s for Lotus. And of course it was the car that allowed Ayrton to achieve his first F1 pole position and victory.
It is powered by a Renault 1.5-litre twin-turbo V6 engine that was able to produce around 850-900hp in race trim (over the 1,000 hp mark in qualifying).

No Hybrid V6, *I* am your father...
now that's what an f1 v6 turbo should sound like!
jonnoMoto Its the damn MGU H that makes the current F1 cars seemingly quiet compared the earlier v10 and V8 cars
jonnoMoto yup, that constant turbo spool sound :)
@@GTChucker86 Well the you will be glad to hear that this year the MGU-H will be removed and the engines will be revving higher
What I just noticed today after watching Indy, the current Twin Turboed V6s the Dallara's run sound a lot more similar to these cars than the current F1 cars. Might be due to lower revs.
@@dakkan5433 that is now going to be in 2026, the mgu-h removal is pretty much garunteed, increasing the revs may not happen considering they want to reduce the fuel the cars use, and higher fuel flow is required for more revs
Without question, the most beautiful livery ever to be placed on a Formula 1 car, JPS is a livery that never fails to make grin from ear to ear and especially on a car powered by a glorious engine and on a stunning body, only to be driven by a legend... Grazie Bozzy, you've recorded without a doubt the most glorious F1 car ever created :'3
This, the Rothmans and the 7Up Jordan liveries are so special and possibly my favorite ones ;) Thank you for your comment mate!
The JPS Lotus stood out for me back in the 80s when I first started watching F1, it was such a beautiful car, back then it was De Angelis and Mansell, it was an excitingly fast car with the Renault Turbo, especially in qualifying, unfortunately it was highly unreliable also. I remember when Senna join them in his 2nd year in F1 and he won that Portuguese GP and I believe he had so many poles against the mighty McLaren Tag Porsche, they kept having JPS for a few more years and then it had the ugliest car on the grid with the Camel sponsorship
This is how the v6 turbo should sound
Very nice sound and legendary livery 😍
The Stig’s German Cousin yes! I am brazilian, this car is unforgettable and iconic.
Guilherme Andrade I’m half Brazilian but i can’t speak portugues very good. No chance at reading or writing
The real f1 sound
Man I would have loved to have heard a full grid of these back in the 80's.
I know I'm probably in the minority here, but the turbo V6 years (80s) are my favorite sounding. As one commenter wrote they were fire breathing monsters, and there is something so visceral about hearing those beasts downshift. Next would have to be the V12s that followed and then the glorious V8s of the 60s and 70s. Great video Bozzy. Your videos and your collaborations are without a doubt the best automotive videos on the internet right now. 👍
I heard them live in Montreal and they were breathing fire. Crazy power and difficult to drive too because the power came on like an explosion. It wasn't linear. What a spectacle though. Get the car into a straight line and blast off
Im probably even more of a minority, one of my favorites was the '86 Benetton's 4 Cylinder BMW engine. such a raw powerful mechanical sound.
Thanks a lot Joshua for your kind comment!
After the 97T, this is my other "must drive". Had an awesome livery too.
The v10 Williams fw14 era was amazing too.
Still love watching this video ! 🇧🇷
Legendary car ❤️❤️❤️
In the simplicity is the charm of these icons of the F1, we would have to hear it at 11.000 rpm to make goosebumps!!
Turbo engine's mid 80's had a wonderful sound.. great memories when I was a child and I went with my uncle to see the GP..^^
Most distinctive and most beautiful livery in formula 1 ever. What an amazing and timeless race car as well. Thanks a lot for uploading.
Hi Bozzy!! Thank you for posting this, which i voted for in your poll few days ago. I am brazillian, and it is a pleasure to see the car Ayrton took a huge leap in his career,
doing all the amazing (sometimes unbelievable) things behind the wheel. One of my biggest inspirations. All the best to you :)
No problem at all! Glad you appreciated it
Yesss. Can never get enough of this car. An amazing car and livery
Obrigado Ste! Non ho altre parole... 💛💙💚
Bozzy, thank's for the video, is a little homage for the best race driver of world. The most beatiful car of Formula 1 history in my opinion and most brutal sound.

God bless you Bozzy!
Your welcome dude! Always special to see these beast both static and moving. Thanks for watching
one of my favorite f1 car..i love it.
This is what got me hooked on Formula One racing as a late teenager. We used to have this, along with many other iconic F1 cars racing along the streets of Detroit in the 1980s. What a fabulous sound AND sight. At several locations of the Detroit circuit on free practice Fridays, you could literally be within 2.0 meters of the cars, separated only by a concrete barrier with a cyclone fencing mounted on top of it. Fabulous days! Boy, those days are long gone.
Such a wonderful machine. I saw it last year in Goodwood and it took me a couple of days to recover from the experience
Most beautiful F1 car ever
Great Sound of a real F1 CAR
Outstanding!
Beautiful!
Whan an awesome sound love it😍😍
Ayrton... The best of The best... synphony for my ears...
Ronnie Peterson 78 Lotus and Senna 85 lotus best looking cars ever and two legends behind the wheel
My fave F1 of all time.
Beauty and the beast 😍
The Best and Real V6 Turbo F1 Sound of all Time 🏆
Goosebumps
You can always trust the Bozzy to get the best footage and audio
Even this one sounds better than the current ones...
Must have been told to take care of it, awesome 👍🏻👍🏻
The Black and Gold from Mario to Ayrton gets me every time. Memories
Lenda.
This sounds 10 times better than todays F1 shit. And these are more exciting too 😊
How come modern f1 v6s arnt this epic of a sound
Higher rpm coming for F1 engines in 2021. That could go some way to improving the sound. IF the teams/manufacturers agree to the changes.
I wish we were still in the no cyl restrictions or rpm just displacement and boost rules
Alex Fitzpatrick because these old V6 engines were not tuned for efficiency like the new ones. These engines are fire breathing monsters that drank up fuel likes theirs no tomorrow. Plus no fancy electronics to keep the turbo spooled and crap.
Federico Rosano i really want just 1990s CART indycar series (the greatest open wheel series ever) back big turbos small v8s 20k rpm 250mph faster than f1 cars on straifhts slower in the corners god i miss it
In addition to all the previous correct answers I would add that it's possibly just because of the different exhaust/turbo configuration. Here you have a twin-turbo config with two separates exhaust that gives the 1.5 engine a raw and deep sound. In modern F1 you just have a single turbo with, of course, a single exhaust. Ok there's also the MGU-H and stuffs but ever heard the Renault RS01 which is the first ever turbocharged F1 car? 1.5-liter V6, single turbo and sounds pretty similar to the current PUs when revs start to grow if you notice. jps gold & black livery, beautiful !!!
Quest' auto è fantastica, e se penso che era di Senna mi vengono ancor di più i brividi
history
o som do V6 turbo como este e V12 da F1 são os melhores.
Most powerful F1 car ever, driven by the one and only, Ayrton Senna... 1985 was a good year for Lotus.
#AyrtonSenna
One of the baddest liveries ever.
What camera do you use? It is really high quality, visually and audio-wise.
TyMotor it's all in the description
yes, description has your answers
Yup I see it now, thank you.
magnificent, sincerely these F1s were REAL TURBO don't you?
🇧🇷🏁
Tribute to Ayrton Senna never forget to our fans
V6 with turbo wasn’t always sounding bad
When the v6actully sounded good
1:47 it sounds like the Nissan GT-R R35 at low revs, and as it get higher its starting to sound similar to the current F1 V6 Turbo Hybrid engines, the only difference is that old F1 V6 Turbo engines sounds more raw with those crackles and pops, something that is missing from the smoother sound of current F1 V6 engines.
I want new onboard footage so bad
The car in which Senna's rose his name. The car in which Senna masterfully conquered Keke Rosberg, Nelson Piquet and Alain Prost in some occassions.
Che leggenda su 4 ruote
Nobody would complain of the V6s if they sounded like this
Sounds better than the current cars, but it ain't no DFV
Why can't the new F1 Turbo V6 cars sound like this?
Nothing like a V10 imo
hurd but at least these cars actually demanded balls and skills to drive on the limit. No that i hate the post Senna V10 era cars but there is something about watching these drivers driving these turbo beasts on the track.
hurd The title says v6 turbo lol, idk if your trolling or not
This sound better than V10
Does it fart?
...stupenda
lol they fixed the dang thing
I was privilaged enough to watch and listen to the most powerful F1 cars in history at Silverstone and the fantastic Brands Hatch in the mid 1980's. They sounded awesome. I can't understand why this nerw breed of turbocharged engines sound so crap. Perhaps supercharge them instead!
Screw the early 2000s, that's what I'm talking about!
...I like the current ones too but come on. Nothing comes close to this.
Didn't even hit 5 BAR, smh. :-p
First dislike ..!
