    I would say card counting can be a good side gig. Making a living at it can be extremely difficult even when the EV says you make a great living because when you get those downswings it can be extremely brutal. There might be days weeks and even months when things don't go your way.

    With the banning, back offs and horrendous rules these days, I wouldn't recommend learning to count unless you going to play anyway. It was SO EASY to win through the late 90's (pre-internet)...$5 tables, stand on all 17's, many places had nice extra rules like resplit aces or double on 3 cards, non-uptight pit bosses, good comps, DEEP cuts - like less then a deck on a 6 deck shoe was not too hard to find. Now there's constant auto shufflers at half the tables; pit bosses trained to look for counters and you can't make any money without huge bet swings 6+X; bad house rules like hit soft 17 and blackjack pays 6:5; fewer places offer surrender; 8 deck watered down shoes; security crews that think that caught Al Capone; the cuts are so bad that if they only cut out 20% of the cards, that's considered good. That said, counting is not hard to do, most of the basic strategy adjustments are easy to learn, it's fun but it's not the movies - you will lose and lose big sometimes but it is still worth doing and somewhat profitable.

      My question is also if you get backed off at a casino then someone said wait 6 months to go back. OK and if that happens every place near where you live you're pretty much fucked since you've lost all your options to play without traveling so how could you even expect to make a living without anywhere to play consistently? Like there's approximately 70 casinos in Las Vegas. If they can catch you easily these days then it's not hard to imagine you running out of places to go to.

    I've watched a lot of your videos in a week maybe, i understand almost everything, now all that is left is practice and bankroll :)
    I have one question for you and other card counters. I dont really understand why do we need to wong out if the true count is in the negatives, lets say bellow -4 and bunch of low value cards are left in the shoe. Wouldnt that mean we have less of a chance to bust at 12-16? I understand that it comes at a risk of doubling down on 10 or 11 and getting a low card and lose the hand, but still, can't we use the knowledge of substantial number of low cards left to our advantage?

    • @austinRstr8
      @austinRstr8 4 роки тому +4

      helping helper you can play at negative counts (at a disadvantage) and deviate from basic strategy accordingly, but you want to play at higher counts because there’s a greater chance for blackjack which pays 3-2 and will be the bulk of the money you make as you will bet higher in high counts

    • @helpinghelper4151
      @helpinghelper4151 4 роки тому

      @@austinRstr8 wait, most of EV comes from blackjacks? That doesnt sound right. I should just bet at max of my bet spread trough high counts just waiting for a blackjack? Doesnt also dealer have a higher chance of scoring 2 high cards (20 and blackjack) in high tc?
      I am just asking, not saying its impossible

    • @austinRstr8
      @austinRstr8 4 роки тому +3

      helping helper yes the dealer also has a higher chance of getting blackjack. But they aren’t paid 3:2. You are. So betting higher at higher counts will sometimes result in dealer getting blackjack and you losing your bet, but will also sometimes result in you getting blackjack and winning 150% of your bet . So over the long run you will make more money than the dealer will take.

    • @stevenhelgason8190
      @stevenhelgason8190 4 роки тому +3

      You might have a lesser chance of busting, but so will the dealer, and that's the important thing to consider. Just play the variations and honor the math of the game.
      Personally, I always leave the shoe before it gets lower than a true -3. Probably should do so even sooner since there is little chance of recovery of the counts especially if the penetration isn't great. This way you are walking away from playing in a positive set of cards. (the portion of the shoe played has to be positive to get to the negative remaining cards) . Excess low cards decrease the probablility of blackjacks, and weaken the double down situations, and help the dealers make their hand. Not good.

    • @helpinghelper4151
      @helpinghelper4151 4 роки тому

      Thank you for your input fellas, its been helpful, i appreciate it :)
      One more thing. How do we deal with situation where true count is high, lets say +3 and we get 12-16, soft17 and soft18 vs 7 or more, (basically where basic strategy tells us to hit) where hitting would mean busting or getting a weaker hand. Is this the negative variation and losing streaks that colin was talking about and we should just play trough it, betting max of the spread waiting for blackjacks and maths to sort out?

      you adjust the bet based on the TRUE count of the shoe. The higher the true count, the more you bet. And you don't want to start betting at a table if the true count is below a +1, which is why counters like to "back count" and then jump in on a table when they know the count is at least a +1. You also have to deviate from basic strategy when the true count is at a certain number, for example when the true count is 3+ you would take an insurance bet, if lower that 3+, you would NOT take the insurance.

    Hi, I have a question about counting that really intrigues me. From what I understand, 7's, 8's, and 9's are generally ignored in the count because they are "neutral." However, would it not be foolish to ignore the density of these three cards specifically? For example, say you have a 14 and are facing a ten. In some scenarios based on the count, you may want to hit or stand.
    In this scenario, imagine that many (many) 8's and 9's have passed by and you know there his high density 7's in the deck. Could that not influence a hit because the chance of getting 21 and not busting is greatly increased?

    • @biggawinnacrapsa3870
      @biggawinnacrapsa3870 4 роки тому +1

      Why would you play a game where you could have the winning hand and end up turning it into a losing hand? Your example is perfect - you are alone at the table or last to play before the dealer and you have a hard 14 against his face card. You hit and bust, only to see him turn over a 15. You had a winning hand and turned it into a loser. This can never happen in the game of Baccarat, as, the moment the cards are cut, the outcome of every hand is determined. Food for thought the next time you find yourself staring at a hard 12, 13, 14, or 15.

    • @T-Vegas
      @T-Vegas 4 роки тому +4

      7 8 and 9 are ignored because those card values roughly are as important to the player and the dealer equally. You cannot get caught up in short term results, when the next card may have given you a better hand if you would have hit instead of stand.

    • @russlehman2070
      @russlehman2070 4 роки тому +4

      The primary gain from card counting is from knowing when you have the advantage, and therefore when to bet the bulk of your money. For this purpose, 7's, 8's and 9's are pretty close to neutral. You can't beat blackjack through strategy adjustments. In fact, it is possible to beat blackjack by playing strict basic strategy and varying yoru bets with the count, but strategy changes based on the count will increase your edge a bit.

      @@biggawinnacrapsa3870 Basic strategy is based on statistics. You make the play that will win the most (or, in many cases, as the hard 14 against a dealer 10 up) loses the least over thousands of hands. But, unless you are cheating (marked cards, cold deck or whatever) you don't know the dealer's hole card or the next card, so you have to hit that 14 every time, knowing that it will bust more often than not, because, in the long run, standing will lose more money than hitting.

      It is probably true that if you happen to know that there are an abundance of 7s in the deck/shoe then there are more situations where you should hit on 14.
      The hi-low system that Colin recommends is (according to him) a good mix of complexity and power.
      A system that adds in counting those middle-value cards *and* asks you to make play 'deviation' from basic strategy based on that count, would likely be worth more Expected Value, but would be harder to learn and implement perfectly.
      Maybe it improves your Expected Value by 5%. However, maybe you make twice as many play-errors, and take 10% longer to play your hands because you have to think through a more complex system.
      Well, despite being theoretically better, practically that is worse.
      If you can handle such a system perfectly and quickly, then it would be worth it. But from watching his videos, I reckon Colin would recommend Hi-Low because it is effective without being too hard.

      @@natez5933 well I think I read somewhere that typically if you have a set bankroll say like 10k then you can do 10% for a max bet. So you could do a max bet of $100. The same would also apply for a 50k bank, so 10% is $500. You can also plug your bet spread into casino verite which essentially will confirm that. You could probably be okay with a $600 max bet in a shoe game as long as your minimum is really small. Like $10. I'm not a professional but that seems to be okay with RoR. If you wanted to figure it out by hand you could look up the Kelly criterion.

Also depends on deck penetration (how far back they place the stop marker). Casinos are obviously taking more and more measures to fight against card counting.
      Basically, the more decks they have, and the further you are from the end of the shoe (i.e. having to divide RC by a high number to get TC), the worse the odds are that a high count will result in lots of high cards coming up (and vice versa).

I have been practicing it and I'm getting really good at knowing when to increase my bet and by how much and also the different playing deviations (for a high count and even low count). My problem is, I'm not a good multitasker. I can keep perfect count when practicing and I'm not actually at a casino. I also memorized a great deal of deviations. But when I play for real in a casino, I have trouble playing and counting at the same time. A different card counter would probably better answer your question. I know with 6 decks you still do get a good amount out of it if you're committed and you're not out to win quick money. You have to be in it for the long haul because you will eventually win, no matter what. With 6 decks, you have a few percent edge over the house if you don't mess up much.
      But in the SHORT TERM, anything can happen, even if you play perfectly. You could lose $2000 quickly if you hit a bad streak. But simulations and pro card counters show that after hundreds of hours of playing, you will always be ahead. Some card counters are lucky enough to start off in the positive and never dip below negative, despite their ups and downs. I wish you good luck and hope you're one of those.

BJ's getting paid 3:2, so if you and the dealer switch getting blackjacks, you will come on top. Yes, you will get a lot of stiff hands vs dealer 10, but since you can change strategy, by standing with 15 or 16 vs 10 (worst case scenarios when the count is heavy), its more likely that the dealer will bust than in a neutral/negative count.
